Tragic Week For Celebrity Moms: Naya Rivera, Kelly Preston, Lisa Marie Presley’s Son Ben

It has been a tragic week with deaths of celebrity women covered in the past or their relatives.

Yesterday, it was revealed that authorities recovered the body of Glee alum Naya Rivera who had apparently gotten swept in an undercurrent while swimming with her son Josey at Lake Pichu in California last week.  The 4-year old was found sleeping on the boat that his mom rented for their daytime excursion. When discovered, he told police that he and his mom went swimming but she didn’t come up.  Aftera a few days search, search and rescue crew knew where to look for Rivera after sharing that she 33-year old former child star had shared a photo of Josey posing in front of a particular cove in the lake.

Rivera was an experienced boater. The death may be ruled accidental drowning, despite earlier speculation that she might had committed suicide.

The day before this news, actress Kelly Preston was confirmed by her husband actor John Travolta. She succumbed to her two year battle with breast cancer. Preston was mom to three, incuding her son Jett who preceded her in death when he passed away at age 16, back in 2009. She later gave birth to son Benjamin at age 47, who now survives his mom along with his older sister Ella.

Benjamin Keough, the grandson of Elvis Presley died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on July 12, TMZ reported. His mother, Lisa Marie Presley‘s, rep Roger Widynowski said the singer is “completely heartbroken, inconsolable and beyond devastated.”

“She adored that boy. He was the love of her life,” the statement continued.

It recently occurred to me that since 54-year old actress Brigitte Nielsen gave birth to her 5th child last year, I haven’t updated my growing list of celebrity women who gave birth over the age of 40.

Model Brigitte Nelson, At Age 54 is Expecting A Baby

Model and TV personality Brigitte Nielsen just bested Janet Jackson who had a baby at age 50 when she announced she is expecting another child at age 54. The former Playboy bunny who is married to married to her 39-year-old husband Mattia Dessi revealed her baby news on her Instagram this week.

“Family getting larger,” she captioned one post cradling her baby bump and wrote in another “happy time positive vibes.”

The Surreal Life alum is already mom to four adult children 34-year old Julian, 28-year old Killian, 25-year old Douglas, 25 and 23-year old Raoul, 23, from previous marriages including one to actor Sylvester Stallone.

This will be Dessi’s first child.

What a time to be an older mom.

Currently, 48-year old actress Rachel Weisz is expecting with hubby Daniel Craig.  Another very advanced age celeb moms include actresses Geena Davis welcomed her twins Kian and Kaiss at 48,  Halle Berry delivered her son Maceo at age 47  and Kelly Preston had son Benjamin at 48. Sophie B. Hawkins also had a second child at age 50.

‘Forty May be the New 30, But Our Ovaries Have Not Gotten the Same Makeover’

Celebrity women like Janet Jackson, Uma Thurman, Nia Long, Kelly Preston  and Laura Linney may have a lot of women into thinking they too can have their first child in their later years.

Celebrities are braving the odds, though people should be cautioned that it is very rare, many older celebrities use expensive medical intervention to deliver their own babies and it’s not as easy as some may think.

According to the Southern California Center for Reproductive Medicine, a woman in her 20s has a 20-25% chance of conceiving naturally per menstrual cycle. In her early 30s, the chance of pregnancy is 15% per cycle. After 35, the odds of pregnancy without medical intervention are at 10%. After 40, that number falls to 5%, and women over 45 have a 1% chance of conception.

“We see celebrities having kids seemingly without any problems and we have no idea what they went through,” Tanya Selvaratham relays in her new book “The Big Lie: Motherhood, Feminism and the Reality of the Biological Clock”. “We see the end result, but not the struggle.”

Forty may be the new 30, but our ovaries have not gotten the same makeover, columnist Wendy Sachs notes in an opinion piece about the advent of older celeb moms. Even with all the advances in reproductive technology, our eggs have a finite shelf life and the odds of having a child over 40 years old are shockingly slim.
A lot of women who delay starting a family unwittingly fall into the new statistic which states that the number of childless women in the United States today is growing.
About 18% of women in the United States don’t have children by the end of their childbearing years, according to a Pew study conducted in 2008,. In 2008, there were 1.9 million childless women between 40 and 44, compared with 580,000 in 1976.

Janet Jackson is Not the Oldest Celebrity to Have Given Birth Recently

When Janet Jackson welcomed her son Essia this past Tuesday, January 3rd, she did not become the celebrity to have given birth at the oldest age. Jackson welcomed her newborn with husband Wissam Al Mana , an entire 4 months and 13 days before her 51st birthday which will be on May 16.

Singer Sophie B. Hawkins, best known for her hit “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover,” gave birth to her second child, daughter Esther Ballantine Hawkins, on July  7, 2015. She only had 3 months and 25 days to go before she turned 51 on November 1. In other words, Janet was 50 and 8 months old and Hawkins was 50 years and 9 months old when they each gave birth.

But who’s counting!?

Other celebrity women to give birth close to age 50 include Beverly D’Angelo who welcomed twins Anton and Olivia Pacino with Al Pacino at age 49. Actress Laura Linney was also 49 when she welcomed her son Bennett Armistead with Marc Schauer in January 2014.

After losing their 16-year-old son Jet in 2009, John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston tried for a third child. They were successful even though Preston would be 48 years old when they welcomed a baby boy, Benjamin, in November 2010.  Geena Davis was also 48 when she too gave birth to twins, sons Kian William and Kaiis Steven, in May 2004. She had her daughter Alizeh Keshvar at age 46.

Finally, Halle Berry said she was not expecting to get pregnant again when she got pregnant with her son Maceo with then-husband Olivier Martinez. She welcomed him in October 2013 when she was 47-years old.

2016 Primetime Emmy Awards: Our Fave Celeb Moms’ Red Carpet Moments

The stars came out in droves for the 68th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards held on Sunday, September 18 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Among the celebrites attending the 2016 Emmy Awards were several of our Bellyitch “Bumpwatch” alums and other celeb moms we’ve featured on the blog.

Several were nominated including Kerry Washington for an Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Movie or Series for her role as Anita Hill in HBO‘s Confirmation; Viola Davis, Claire Danes and Taraji P. Henson for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for their role as Annalise Keating in ABC‘s How to Get Away with Murder,  as Carrie Mathison in Showtime‘s Homeland and as “Cookie” in Fox‘s Empire, respectively.

Winners included Regina King who took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for her role as Terri Lacroix in the ABC drama American Crime.

During a red carpet interview, she reflected back 20 years to working in Jerry Macguire alongside Cuba Gooding Jr. right after giving birth to her son. The recalled how supportive everyone was on the set to her and allowed her time to breastfeed.

“Honestly I just had my son the month before we started shooting and just being able to be in an environment that embraced a new mom,” the Southland and 24 alum said. “And they took breaks when it was time for me to nurse and that’s what I remember. I remember being able to be an actress and still be a mom and that’s special.”

She now stars on the hit HBO show, The Leftovers, and has directed several episodes of Scandal, Being Mary Jane, The Catch and other television projects.

Janet Jackson will Join List of 40+ Celebrities who gave Birth after 40

At 49-years old, pop singer Janet Jackson is reportedly pregnant with her first child with husband Wissam Al Mana, Entertainment Tonight exclusively reports.

Last month, Jackson canceled her latest tour, citing doctor’s orders for her to take it easy while she plans a family. Then, given her advanced maternal age, most people speculated that she would likely be using a surrogate or adopting a child.

With modern advancement in medicine, what was once almost impossible is now very much possible for older women wishing to have children.

She will join our growing list of celebrity women who gave birth after their 40s and at 50, when she’ll welcome her child (or children, depending if she’s carrying twins). She turns 50 in 2 weeks.

Actress Lauren Linney previously held our record. She was 49 when she gave birth to her first child.

These 40 Celebrities had Babies After Age 40

When Actress Laura Linney gave birth to her first child last year, January 15, 2015,  she became the oldest celebrity woman to give birth “naturally” at age 49. She outseated actress Kelly Preston who gave birth to her son Benjamin when she was 48.  It was the first child for the The Truman Show  star and her husband since 2009, Marc Schauer. 
 
Linney was among a long list of celebrities who managed to stay under the radar for the majority of their pregnancy including: Tamar Braxton,  Adele, Nicole Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson and Beyonce who all announced at the 5th month mark that they were “with child.”  She was more successful than Lost  actress Evangeline Lily, who  never told anyone she was pregnant and was eventually busted by paparazzi at 8 months pregnant while she was living in Hawaii. Linney also bested Jennifer Hudson who looked to be about 8 months pregnant when a wayward photographer caught her and her boyfriend out and about, trying to be inconspicuous.
And at 49, Linney also joins the over 40 baby club which includes:

Earth Day: Eco-Friendly Celebrity moms who do good for earth

Earth Day is a month away! 
For this edition of Eco-Friday, we are going to highlight some of our fave Bellyitch Bumpwatch moms who have shown they have a commitment to the earth and helping others overcome natural disasters.
Jessica Alba co-founded an eco-friendly baby company, the Honest Company, which makes earth friendly products.


Drew Barrymore, actress, author and entrepreneur is known to be a flower child and recently she launched an eco-friendly and affordable make up line called  Flower Beauty.
Beyonce Knowles has worked with Second Harvest food bank network and with her husband Jay-Z founded United Nation’s Water for Life, an organization devoted to giving people worldwide access to clean drinking H2O. 
Gisele Bundchen, international Brazilian model, has been involved in plenty of earth conscious programs and events over the years. She and husband Tom Brady live in a 22,000 square foot eco-friendly green mansion with solar panel roofs and a rainwater recovery systems. 
Hilary Duff is involved with USA Harvest a non-profit that collects surplus from area restaurants for homeless, missions and soup kitchens and has donated millions of dollars in  meals to the homeless. 
Hayden Panettiere, Nashville actress, volunteers to register youth to vote and works with programs to help wild sea creatures including dolphins and other endangered wildlife. 
Kelly Preston , with her husband John Travolta, Preston is famously known for donating their private jet to fly in loads of supplies and medicine to the Baton Rouge and New Orleans area during Hurricane Katrina.  
Alicia Silverstone is a vegan who has worked often with PETA and helped promote its campaigns. Silverston also lives in a very cool eco-friendly house.

It warmed my heart so see that traditional names are coming back into style and are becoming more popular among parents. Babysitting.net chronicled the top 10 girl and boy names making a comeback.
Girls’ Names
  1. Anna – “Anna” is one of the girls’ names that never seems to go completely out of style. Originating from the Greek or Latin version of the Hebrew name “Hannah,” Anna means “grace” and came in at number thirty-eight on the list of most popular girls’ names in 2011.
  2. Charlotte – The French feminine diminutive of “Charles,” Charlotte’s meaning, “free man,” has masculine connotations. Still, Charlotte was the twenty-seventh most popular name in 2011 and is the name of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze, Jr.’s daughter.
  3. Ella – At number twelve on the list of most popular girls’ names for 2011 is “Ella,” which is of Germanic origination and means “all, completely; fairy maiden.” Mark Wahlberg, Ben Stiller, Eric Clapton and John Travolta all have daughters with this old-fashioned moniker.
  4. Eva – The Latin form of the Hebrew name “Eve,” meaning “life,” Eva is eighty-third on the list of most popular girls’ names for 2011. Derivations Ava and Eve are also very popular.
  5. Grace – A virtue name meaning exactly what it says, “Grace” is number sixteen on the list of most popular girls’ names for 2011 with notable choices by celebrity parents Lance Armstrong and Christy Turlington.
  6. Julia – Derived from Latin and meaning “youthful,” Julia was the fifty-seventh most popular name for baby girls in 2011.
  7. Lucy – The English feminine variation of “Lucius,” Lucy was the seventy-second most popular name for girls born in 2011. While it may be most memorably connected to a certain flame-haired comedienne, “Lucy” was also chosen by country crooner Zac Brown for his daughter.
  8. Rose – Latin for “rose, a flower,” Rose is an old-fashioned name that has enjoyed something of a revival.
