Study: Pregnancy Protein May Be Cure For Eczema

Atopic dermatitis, the most common form of eczema, could be treated with a protein known to protect the fetus against attack from the mother’s immune system during pregnancy, a new study suggests.

Researchers from Japan found that the protein, called human leukocyte antigen-G1 (HLA-G1), significantly improved skin lesions in mice with atopic dermatitis.

What is more, HLA-G1 was found to reduce immune system activity among rodents in response to dust mites, a common allergen for atopic dermatitis.

Study co-author Prof. Katsumi Maenaka, of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Hokkaido University in Japan, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the journal International Immunopharmacology.

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic form of eczema, which is an inflammatory skin condition characterized by rashes – particularly on the face, hands, feet, and behind the elbows and knees – and dry, itchy skin.

The symptoms of atopic dermatitis can be triggered by exposure to a number of irritants and allergens, including dust mites, pet dander, mold, pollen, cigarette smoke, and certain foods.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, atopic dermatitis is estimated to affect at least 28 million people in the United States. The condition is most common among infants and children; around 90 percent of people with atopic dermatitis develop it before the age of 5 years.

Why New Moms Attempt Suicide A Year After Giving Birth

Depression, Hormones and societal expectations are among the common reasons women attempt suicide within the first year of  giving birth.

This summation of facts are among many eye -awakening revelations in a report about mental health and pregnancy in a recent Washington Post expose.

Author Michael Alison Chandler notes “mental health disorders are the most common complications of pregnancy, but just 15 percent of the women affected by postpartum depression seek professional help.”

She relays a few relatable examples of women who experienced mental breakdowns before, during and after pregnancy.

If you didn’t know how prevalent it is, know that “at least one in seven women experience anxiety or depression during pregnancy or in the first year after birth, making mental-health disorders the most common complication of pregnancy.”

Also illuminating:

About 80 percent of women experience “baby blues” within the first few weeks of child birth, often defined by mood swings and irritability or sadness.

Maternal depression is longer lasting and has more-severe symptoms, which can include anxiety, sleeplessness, extreme worry about the baby, feelings of hopelessness, and recurrent “intrusive thoughts” about hurting themselves or the baby.

Women are more likely to attempt suicide during the first year after childbirth than during any other time in their lives, and they tend to choose more lethal means.

These mood disorders are triggered by fluctuating hormones, including estrogen and progesterone, that ramp up during pregnancy and then drop off sharply after birth. Another significant hormonal shift occurs when women stop breast-feeding.

Researchers are trying to understand what predisposes some women to be more sensitive to these hormonal fluctuations.

It’s clear that environmental stressors play a role. The prevalence of depression is far higher for women who are poor or in abusive relationships or for women whose babies are born premature or disabled.

The good news is that medical practitioners are doing a better job at “screening for depression” and even lawmakers are beginning to look for solutions for expanding treatment options.

For example, last November, Congress passed the Bringing Postpartum Depression Out of the Shadows Act as part of a large medical research funding bill to provide federal grants to states to create programs that screen and treat women for maternal depression. The bill had broad bipartisan support, but as usual with Congress, it is stalled on how to fund it.

According to the Post, the House also last week approved just $1 million of the $5 million originally allocated. The Senate has not voted on it yet.

Congresswoman Katherine Clark, D-Massachusetts introduced the bill because she said many women struggle silently through what is supposed to be “the happiest time of their lives.”

“Moms have a lot of guilt about how they feel, so they don’t seek treatment,” she told the Post. “We want to reduce the stigma and increase awareness that this is highly treatable.”

Viral #IHadAMiscarriage Instagram Account Aims to Destigmatize Miscarriage

vaughn-dabney-i-had-a-miscarriage

As women get older, close to 40 percent at age 40 will experience a miscarriage, a rate that is much lower for women age 20 to 30 (9-17%), states the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Although common, miscarriage is still a taboo subject that isn’t discussed much, leaving those who suffer it to feel isolated, alone and ashamed sometimes.

One mom has turned her miscarriage into a viral Instagram account with over 15,000 followers!

Jessica Zucker, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist based in Los Angeles who specializes in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health. Dr. Zucker is the creator of the #IHadAMiscarriage campaign, and a line of pregnancy loss cards.

Zucker created her account which began as a hashtag, #IHadAMiscarriage  to share her personal story with others.  Zucker was 16 weeks pregnant with her second child and had passed the first trimester time period when miscarriage is most common. In her first post where she used the hashtag, Zucker wrote,  “I had a second-trimester miscarriage. That is a fact of my life,” she wrote. “I have no shame. No self-blame. No guilt. I did nothing wrong. I did nothing to deserve this. My body works. I don’t feel it failed. I embrace my grief fully and allow it to wash over me. I grieve still.”

The empowering message was well received and encouraged others to share their story and they continue today in beautiful prose, handpaintings, and other motivational and endearing messages that Zucker publishes on her now viral Instagram account in posts like this one.

# IHadAMiscarriage I had a 2nd trimester miscarriage. This is a fact of my life. An experience that changed who I am. Pregnancy after pregnancy loss changed me all the more. I have no shame. No self-blame. No guilt. I did nothing wrong. I did nothing to deserve this. My body works. I don’t feel it failed. I embrace my grief fully and allow it to wash over me. I grieve still. I don’t believe rainbow babies “replace” our lost loves. When we lean into heartache, we evolve. When we work vigorously to stave it off, we drown. I don’t believe everything happens for a reason. I know I am not alone, nor are you. _ This campaign is here for anyone who has experienced any type of pregnancy or infant loss. We are here to share stories with the aim of softening stigma and ushering in connection. Let this space be a life line. An anchor. A community. _ What an elating honor it is to have my work and specifically this page featured on @selfmagazine today. And this one:

and this one

@channelfrida shares: After the first miscarriage I thought about getting a small halo tattoo that only I would see and understand the meaning of. Never did I imagine I would go through it 3 more times in less than 11 months. _ Now that we have an answer and a hopeful solution, I decided to spend this waiting period before surgery and before TTC again to design this tattoo with the help of an amazingly talented and gracious tattoo artist. One birth month flower for every due date we will mourn. Two hearts, mine and my husband’s, amidst the garden. _ Sitting for this tattoo was a strange and emotional experience. The physical pain was rough, but nothing compared to the past year, and I kept thinking this tribute was oddly fitting. _ I look forward to the moment I will be able to wrap these arms around our rainbow baby, and one day share the meaning of my mural of flowers with them. _ #IHadAMiscarriage #miscarriage #grief #recurrentmiscarriage #loss #rainbowbaby #pregnancyafterloss #motherhood

Rushing the Pain by @jazzandkate. Stories from around the world (Connecticut). Posted with permission. _ “Deciding not to have another baby was the only way I could garner some control over all that happened to me over the past year. Two baby boys that I’d never meet. Two baby brothers that my daughter would never have. There are worse things than having an only child, I told myself. It’s time to be grateful for what you have and move on. _ Six weeks after my second loss, I was steadfast to get all things baby out of my house. I packed boxes, organizing everything immaculately as I went. I considered selling but the process seemed too time consuming. I needed it it if my house as quickly as possible. Thousands of dollars of inventory, gone. It felt therapeutic in the moment but now that it’s gone, I sit here wondering, “what have I done?” _ #IHadAMiscarriage #miscarriage #pregnancyloss #motherhood #pregnancyafterloss #grief #loss #1in4 // Artwork by @Marco.demasi found via @jasoncampbellstudio.

2017 BET Awards Trends: 90s Comebacks, Africa, Platinum Blonde and Babies

collage-picmonkey-s-photo-editor-free-online-image-editing

The 2017 BET Awards went down at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. I confess that I only got a chance to catch the end as I was heading to the beach to celebrate my eldest kid’s birthday and didn’t settle in to our suite until the show was well into its fourth and final hour! But I must say, that I thorougly enjoyed the singing chops of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Tamar Braxton who did an excellent job performing her new song, “My Man” on stage.

Tameka Tiny Cottles Harris, LaTocha and Tamika Scott and Kandi Burruss of 1990s girl group Xscape reuniting soon for a tour

Sadly, I missed a couple of our other bumpwatch alums, Kandi Buruss and Tameka “Tiny” Harris perform with their 1990s R&B girl group, Xscape

img_7715

The duo joined fellow members LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott in a medley of their hits on stage since breaking up as a group 18 years ago. It was the first of two explosive 90s R&B performances. The New Edition tribute and performances later blew me away!

Xscape will document their work as they prepare to perform at the 2017 Essence Festival. The docuseries, titled Xscape: Still Kickin’ It, premieres this fall on Bravo.

WATCH:

I noticed some fashion and hair trends beginning with the blunt platinum bob LaTocha Scott and Braxton wore. Singer-Actress Kat Graham who plays Jada Pinkett-Smith in the new movie All Eyez on Me, rapper and star of Love & Hip Hop: New York Cardi B and our other bumpwatch alum Blac Chyna  all did the blunt blonde bob.

And platinum blonde, in general,  had a big showing  on Tiny’s daughter Zonnique, who is also a recording-artist. She wore her hair in that shade as did Lateysha Grace, a German transplant who has been on three seasons of MTV show The Valleys.

Clockwise: Lateysha Grace, Zonnique, Cardi B and Blac Chyna in platinum blonde hair.

It was also cool to see so many parents bring their children to the show. DJ Khaled actually brought his son Asahad on stage with him during his performance. It reminded me of all the NBA babies at their dads’ games.

70180aa0-6f2d-4e4e-b0ec-b645c2dc0726

Jamie Foxx had his daughter Annalise help him present on stage and Future got his daughter Londyn a matching bedazzled mask to wear in honor of his popular new single “Mask Off” which he later performed that night with a cameo from Kenderick Lamar. Another big winner was Chance the Rapper whose mom accompanied him to the show.

Speaking of Winners. Beyonce was a BIG winner taking home the most awards for Best Female R&B Performer, Viewers’ Choice, Video of the Year for her song “Sorry” (which tied with Bruno Mars) and is off her album Lemonade, which one for Album of the Year.  The director for “Sorry” won the for Best Director.

img_7723

Her sister Solange  took home the Centric Award for her song “Cranes in the Sky” which also earned the star her first Grammy award earlier in the year.  Besides Solange, we spotted a few of our other Bumpwatch alums at the event including Keyshia Cole.

Speaking of Blac Chyna and Amber Rose. The two of them once famously attended back to back awards shows in 2015 hand in hand but last night came with other people, Chyna with other people.

I also want to shout out other aspects of Africa represented last night in the strapless Ankara  (West African) dresses worn by beauty blogger Jennie Jenkins and The Color Purple veteran actress  Margaret Avery and actress Nomzamo Mbatha‘s South African print trimmed dress and in South Sudanese model Duckie Thot, Sudanse vlogger Nikki Perkins and Afro German soap opera actress  Sandra Lambeck.

25+ Chapter Books to Pick From For Your Summer Reader

chapter-book

Summer’s out and one thing that is essential to stave off the Summer brain drain is to keep your little kids reading all Summer long. For rising 3rd to 7th graders, especially, it is important for them to have at least one chapter book they’re reading at all times. That way, during long car trips, times when they’re ‘bored’ or taking a computer or electronics break, they will have a book already on hand to go read.

Hopefully, they can get into the book and enjoy it enough that they look forward to reading it. It took our family a long time to get our son to get into reading chapter books (read how we did it here) but once we did, we realized the key was to get a book that he could relate to with characters close to his age.

My youngest kids attend a school that specializes in classical eduation; e.g, reading classics, studying early civilizations, memorizing prose etc. Here is a list of books that my rising 4th grader’s teacher sent her off with but I added a few extra ones to include diversity in culture and characters for a mix.

Hope you can discover a book for you school aged Summer Learner!

What Your Baby’s Birthstone Tell You About Her Future Personality

img_6812

Pregnancy is a very special time for expectant mothers and fathers. The miraculous growth of an entirely new human being continues to mesmerize and evoke feelings of previously unknown depths. Filled with incredible joy and immense anticipation, parents count the weeks leading up to the birth of their little baby.

Apart from shopping for baby items and getting the nursery ready, many of us visualize our baby before the birth because we are full of impatience and curiosity. While you wonder whether you are going to have a boy or a girl, you also frequently ask yourself what kind of a personality your little one is going to have. Is he going to be funny, smart, artistic, or intellectual? Is she going to be a doctor, a ballet dancer, or a rocket scientist?

One way of doing so is by looking at astrological star signs; another is to look at the wisdom provided through birthstones. According to many, birthstones predict a child’s personality traits.

Gemstones have featured throughout history, and birthstones are no different. Experts trace the origins of birthstones back to the Bible, or, more precisely, back to Moses. He is believed to have chosen twelve precious gemstones to decorate a special breastplate for Aaron, the high priest. The twelve stones are said to have represented the twelve tribes of Israel.

Later, these twelve gems became associated with the signs of the zodiac and, eventually, each gemstone was dedicated to one of the twelve calendar months. When looking for a list of birthstones, you may find different variations; however, the list we feature here is the one most jewelry makers use today.

The Power of Gemstones

Throughout history, gemstones have been used not just for their value and beauty but, also, because of their inherent energy. While not everyone will believe in the healing force of gemstones, people throughout human history have attributed special powers to gemstones. Individual gems have been associated with distinct qualities, and today’s crystal therapists use each precious gem for specific purposes.

Unique Qualities and Characteristics of Birthstones

Because each birthstone is associated with unique properties and intended for specific uses, we can, therefore, make certain guesses about the personality of the people born in each month. Consequently, if your child is going to be a January child, you can look up the properties of garnet and get an impression of the type of personality your child is likely to have. You may also wish to purchase the right birthstone for you child, as a source of comfort, as well as joy and strength.

What Birthstones Can Tell You About the Personality of Your Child

Taking a look at each of the qualities associated with your baby’s likely birthstone is utterly fascinating. While it will just give you a glimpse of what type of little person she/he is going to be, even a snapshot can delight and excite.

Let’s take a look at each birthstone, month by month.

start with mine and check out the rest here

September – Sapphire

Even though most people think of sapphire as a stunningly blue gem, sapphire comes in many colors. The most famous sapphire ring is perhaps the engagement ring Prince Charles gave to Diana in 1981 as an engagement ring. Prince William gave the same ring to Kate, now the Duchess of Kent, in 2011.

Throughout history, sapphire was associated with the divine. The Greeks, Buddhists, and Hindus also used sapphire for its spiritual qualities, believing that this precious gem provided a direct link to higher powers.

Personality Traits: People born in September are believed to be intelligent and calm and slow to lose their cool, but also reluctant to share their feelings.

Crystal therapists use sapphire to strengthen veins, calm cells, and enhance spiritual gifts.

Bump Speculation: Meghan Markle at Pippa Middleton’s Wedding Reception

89c946ff-d93a-4830-97f8-b6d4aa22dee8

The sister to our most popular bumpwatched alum Catherine Duchess of Cambridge (nee Kate Middleton) got married on Saturday, May 20 at St. Mark’s church in England:

Pippa Middleton married her fiancé of two years, hedge fund manager James Matthews, at a lavish ceremony where her niece and nephew Prince George and Princess Charlotte were in the wedding party, along with sister Kate and princes Harry and William.

The bride wore a jaw-dropping white lace gown courtesy of British designer Giles Deacon.

She also married into royalty as Matthews is the heir to a Scottish title. His father, David Matthews, is otherwise known as the Laird of Glen Affric, meaning that eventually, Pippa will be known as Lady of Glen Affric.

The ceremony was also notable for rumors that Pippa only permitted significant others who were fiance or married to a family member to attend- a so-called “no ring, no bring” policy.

William’s bro is famously seriously dating American actress Meghan Marke. While the Suits star didn’t make the ceremony, the Daily Mail reports that she did attend other wedding weekend events including a Bucklebury,  Bershire event and  air exhibition at the Middleton’s estate.

Markel attended while Pippa’s brother-in-law Spencer Matthews‘ girlfriend Vogue Williams did not. So…hmmmm

Also, we don’t think it is there, but a few folks thought they saw a slight bump on her recently, sparking Bumpwatch and marriage speculation widely.

Time will tell.
