The last baby born

The last baby born in 2013 & first in 2014 are Twins! -Just like in 2011/12

Even though it is rare, it’s happened again: the last baby born in 2013 and the first in 2014 are twins!

Yaleni was born on 11:58 in 2013 and her brother Brandon was born 12:01 am on January 1, 2014, according to MedStar Washington Hospital Center, WJLA reports.

Amazing! And given that they will be dressing alike and associated with each other forever, at least they get to celebrate their birthdays on two different days and not have to share that!

And it happened before!

The last baby born in 2011 and the first born in 2012 were also twins!

Jenna and Leah Bear were the first and last born babies of 2012 and 2011.

Jenna Bear was born at 11:59 on New Year’s Eve and her sister Leah at midnight, via c-section.

“It is a great way to end the previous year and to start the New Year,” their mom Jocelyn Bear said back then. “I can’t imagine a better way.” Dad, Blake, said it was an unexpected surprise!

TAKE BETTER NEWBORN PHOTOGRAPHY WITH THESE 10 EXPERT TIPS

Photographing a newborn can be challeging for professionals, and even more daunting for parents or amateurs. It doesn’t have to be if you do some advance prep and get some advice from the experts.  Dreamstime Professional Photographer Barbara Helgason offers these 10 must-see tips:

1. Safety first. This should go without saying. Babies have a startle reflex and their strong little legs can do a froggy kick and propel them forward. Always, always, have mom sitting right next to baby within arm’s reach.

2.  Young babies are sleepy babies and sleepy babies make the best little models. Try to photograph them as young as possible, usually between 7 and 10 days old. As they get a little older they start becoming a bit more awake and alert. Also many newborns develop newborn acne around two weeks of age, so that is another reason to plan your sessions as early as possible.

3. Warm babies are sleepy babies, and do we love sleepy babies. Crank up the heat a couple of hours before a newborn session. It should be uncomfortably warm in the room so baby can rest well.

4. Hungry babies are not happy and they are definitely not sleepy. Babies should have a full tummy and to be prepared to feed, a lot if needed. Ideally we want baby to feel the way we do after a big turkey dinner.

5. All babies love white noise. You can also get womb sounds online. Those a bit more soothing. You can play them on your phone and tuck it under the blanket behind baby’s head. If you do use your phone, don’t forget to put it into the do not disturb mode. For a really fussy baby shushing in his or her ear will also work wonders.

6. Patience, patience patience. Newborn sessions should absolutely not be rushed. Getting those cute little poses takes time. Hold their little arms and legs gently in the position you want until you can sense they’ve settled into a deep sleep. Pay attention to detail. Take the time to open those little fists and uncurl each of their tiny fingers. Rub the frowns out of their little foreheads. Gently tug their cheeks and if you’re lucky they may even give you a little smile.

7. Invest in the right props. Bean bags, thick plush and textured blankets, knitted hats, head bands, and wraps and diaper covers are great investments. Also, a basket of washcloths in various shapes and sizes are great to slide in under the blanket, to help position baby. These can be tucked under to tilt baby’s face just so, to lift their bottoms a bit more, etc etc.

8. Don’t forget to zoom in and get close ups of their eyelashes,  little fingers and little toes. And if baby is crying, keep it real and capture those tears as well.

9. Don’t shoot up the babies nose. It’s the one angle that’s never ever attractive.

10. And last but definitely not least is lighting. Really, if you don’t have good lighting, none of they above tips will matter at all. Placing your beanbag next to large bright window. Look for soft shadows and learn to see the light. Photography is always about the light. You may have the most expensive camera and the best and fastest lenses, but if you don’t have the right lighting, you will not get a single good image.

We hope these tips help! Good Luck, Parents!

Usain Bolt Introduces the World to Newborn Daughter Olympia Lightning Bolt

Congrats to Jamaican Olympic legend Usain Bolt who became a father back in May but recently shared a photo this past Tuesday with the name of his daughter: Olympia Lightning Bolt.

Little Olympia was born to mom Kasi Bennett in May, according to a tweet sent that month by Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

Baby’s name is an ode to the Olympics which made Bolt famous and also his last name is a natural reason to give her that particular unconventional middle name. Oh the pressure to be fast is on for that little girl! lol

Bolt also used the day to wish his girlfriend a Happy Birthday.

“I want to wish my gf @kasi__b a happy birthday,” he captioned a tweet with professional newborn photos. “I get to spend ur special day with u. I want nothing but happiness for u & will continue to doing my best keeping a smile on ur face. We have started a new chapter together with our daughter Olympia Lightning Bolt”

‘Married To Medicine’s Quadd Welcomes Baby Girl via Adoption

Married with Medicine star Quad Webb is the latest Bravolebrity to welcome a child and the second in a few months to do so solo.

Webb introduced the world to her new daughter, Ariana, and recently shared a tender first photo on her Instagram page this week.

Just last week, rapper Iggy Azalea decided to use the Black Lives Matter movement to introduce the world to her new son she had delivered weeks prior with beau and fellow rapper Playboi Carti.

Similarly, Webb did too, using the motto of the movement to share a first photo of a  baby born months ago in April.

“Life is precious, it should be protected and valued #blacklivesmatter,” Quad captioned a photo of her daughter grasping her thumb.

She had previously announced the April birth and plans to retrieve the baby named from her birth home safely during the COVID era.

“It is exciting news, and there are so many moving pieces. My mom and I are extremely happy to welcome baby Ari to her new village,” Quad told Bravo TV‘s media subsidiary The Daily Dish in a statement. “She was born on April 8th, and since then we have been working to get her home to begin what will surely be a joyous, successful and opportunity filled life.”

She also talked about the rapid changes she’s had in her life since finalizing her divorce from Dr. Gregory Lunceford whom she was married to during most of her stint on the Bravo TV franchise show.

“There’s so much happening so fast! I’ve been in the process of looking for a new home, and now it has a completely different meaning,” she shared. “I’m eager and anxious, as my family means so much to me. We thank you in advance for all of your prayers and well wishes.”

Another Bro TVav star Golnesa “GiGi” Gharachedaghi delivered her first child solo as did executive producer and host Andy Cohen who welcomed a son via surrogatre last year.

Congrats!

How to get your newborn to sleep through the night

Every baby is different, so it’s only natural for some to have a more difficult time with nighttime sleep than others. Some babies take to it very well and at a very young age are able to sleep through the night with only the occasional wakeup. Others, however, require a lot of patience and guidance in order to get to point where they can sleep all night. But in every case, there are things parents can do to make things easier for the baby as well as for themselves.

If your baby has trouble sleeping through the night and you are ready to move to the next stage, here are a few tips that may help.

  1. Have a routine: To ease your little one into sleep, establish a nighttime routine that you follow without exception. This might include a bath, reading time, and the last feeding of the day. Do whatever works best for your family. Just make it consistent, and make sure it differs from other routines you have through the day.
  2. Discourage nighttime feeding: Very early on, it is perfectly natural for an infant to require several feedings during the night, and this can continue for many months if it is not too much trouble for the parents. But if are ready for better nighttime sleep and your child is old enough, you can begin phasing out these feedings. Keep track of how much your baby eats and how much she requires, and make sure she gets enough during the daytime hours while gradually lessening the nighttime feedings.
  3. Position the baby well: To minimize the risk of SIDS, most medical authorities recommend placing the baby on her back at bedtime for the first nine months of life (some recommend longer), and this advice is worth heeding. But when the baby gets old enough to move around at will, there is little you can do to control her position. The good news is that she will naturally find the position in which she is most comfortable and in which she will sleep best. So when your baby is old enough, give her the freedom to find her preferred positions.
  4. Try different outfits: If your baby seems to wake up a lot, this could be a sign of discomfort resulting from his sleep outfit. Try different things, and make sure you experiment with each item enough nights to draw a conclusion about whether your baby likes it or not.
  5. Control room conditions: Also try different conditions in the room where your baby sleeps. Perhaps he does well with a little bit of noise, in which case you can use a fan or a radio to make some gentle white noise. Also make sure you try different temperatures. Childcare experts generally recommend dressing babies a little more warmly than you would dress yourself, but this is not a blanket rule, and some babies tend to get hot in normal room-temperature conditions.
  6. Learn baby’s back-to-sleep habits: Watch your baby for several nights to see how she typically reacts when waking up in the middle of the night. If she wakes, fusses for a moment, and then goes back to sleep, make sure you allow her to do this instead of interrupting her natural process. On the other hand, if you can learn to recognize when she is unlikely to get herself back to sleep, you can get to her early and minimize the amount of time she is awake.

Good luck, new parents! We hope you get some rest…and baby too!

Bills Withers and the Crying Baby Hack that Starts In Utero

R&B crooner Bill Withers passed away over the past week from heart failure at age 81.

Not is his passing a loss for the music industry, it is for the world and all those who enjoyed his work.  Withers played the soundtrack of my life too with his hits songs like “Aint No Sunshine“and “Just the Two Of Us” duet with Grover Washington, Jr. but his music was also an integral part of my baby rearing when I had a young family.

He helped me test out a hack for soothing an inconsolable baby that starts when that baby is still in its mommy’s tummy.

When I was pregnant with my first child back in 2001, I read a book about the importance of introducing classical music to your baby in utero.

So, I decided to play the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” from The Nutcracker Ballet suite for my then soon-to-be first born child when I was pregnant with him while I traveled along my day, running errands, traveling back and forth to work.

When he was born and there would be moments when he would get inconsolable, all I had to do was put on the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and he would immediately stop crying and settle down.

I used that hack for my middle kid and again for my youngest child. For each of the subsequent pregnancies, I picked a different sound. I didn’t think it had to be classical music so for my last child, I picked the Bill Withers song “Lovely Day“. It worked on her too.

We lost a legend but the music lives on in our memories, hearts, feelings of nostalgia and playlists. If you can, please check out this excellent write up Rolling Stone magazine did on him back on 2015 and you’ll get to appreciate his very dynamic life.: “Bill Withers: The Soul Man Who Walked Away

Lyrics:

When I wake up in the morning, love

And the sunlight hurts my eyes

And something without warning, love

Bears heavy on my mind

Then I look at you

And the world’s alright with me

Just one look at you

And I know it’s gonna be

A lovely day

A lovely day

When the day that lies ahead of me

Seems impossible to face

When someone else instead of me

Always seems to know the way

Then I look at you

And the world’s alright with me

Just one look at you

And I know it’s gonna be

A lovely day

A lovely day

When the day that lies ahead of me

Seems impossible to face

When someone else instead of me

Always seems to know the way

Then I look at you

And the world’s alright with me

Just one look at you

And I know it’s gonna be

A lovely day

A lovely day

Study: Quit Smoking in First Pregnancy Trimester Still Damages Baby

Photo by Irina Iriser from Pexels

In “you don’t say?” news, a recently published study found that mothers who quit smoking in their first trimester after getting pregnant risk having a low birth baby or one with a small brain.

The research findings of the University of Eastern Finland was published in the BMJ Open late last month.

The effect of tobacco which contains thousands of chemicals which can permeate the placenta can be seen during pregnancy and after teh baby is born.

The study looked at 1.4 million mother-child pairs in Finland, analysing the effect of maternal smoking on newborns’ body size and body proportions when the mother had smoked only during the 1st trimester as opposed to continued smoking.

Other well-known toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke include carbon monoxide, which can interfere with the unborn child’s oxygen supply.

“Smoking during pregnancy is relatively common. In this study, 84.5% were non-smokers and 3.5% quit smoking during the 1st trimester, but 12% continued to smoke after the 1st trimester,” said Researcher Isabell Rumrich.

The study showed that maternal smoking is associated with a stronger reduction in body length and head circumference than in birth weight, leading to changed body proportions, a press statement stated.

The effects on body proportions of having quit smoking during the 1st trimester or having continued smoking after the 1st trimester were similar, stressing the importance of early pregnancy as a sensitive exposure window.

“The most important finding of our study is that although quitting smoking in the 1st trimester reduces the risk of low birth weight, brain size and body length in relation to body weight seem not to catch up.This stresses the importance of quitting smoking already before pregnancy, since even smoking only during early pregnancy can have devastating effects on the long term health of the unborn child,” Rumrich notes.

Like Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton Too Suffered Isolation after Having A Royal Baby

On the heels of Meghan Markle expressing how lonely she was after having a baby in a documentary released last October as a Royal, Duchess Catherine recently opened up about having similar postpartum struggles as well.

The former Kate Middleton spoke with workers who are parents at center in Cardiff, Wales on Wednesday while promoting a  groundbreaking survey on the early childhood and she shared about how isolated she was with a new baby while her husband Prince William was away stationed with the Royal Air Force.

“It’s nice to be back in Wales,” Kate said. “I was chatting to some of the mums. It was the first year and I’d just had George — William was still working with search and rescue — and we came up here and I had a tiny, tiny baby in the middle of Anglesey.”

She added: “It was so isolated, so cut off. I didn’t have any family around, and he was doing night shifts. So…if only I had had a center like this.”

Recall last October, Duchess Meghan spoke about her struggle with being a new mom and newlywed to Prince Harry for ITV journalist Tom Bradby documentary, “Harry & Meghan: An African Journey“, Meghan Markle shared her :

“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging. And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot,” she said at the time. “So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s um…yeah. I guess, also thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.”

After Bradby asked if she  was struggling and not okay, the Duchess responded, “Yes.”

So…there you go.
