Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ New Characters as Baby Names in US History

star wars names

Called “eternally popular” by Forbes, the “Star Wars” franchise is among the most beloved, recognizable, successful and enduring movie series in the history of film. The now seven-movie series (five more are planned) boasts the third-highest franchise box office gross revenue on record, but that doesn’t begin to account for the brand’s success.

From phone cases to action figures, bed sheets, stationery and lunch boxes, Star Wars is arguably the most universally merchandised film series of all time. Although today’s children are just as fascinated as their parents and grandparents with the saga, those that were kids for the original films are now somewhere close to 50 years old. According to the New York Times, Star Wars has managed to connect middle-aged fans to their childhoods like no other film series in history.

With legions of loyal fans — from toddlers to the elderly — obsessing over the tiniest fragments of Star Wars minutia, the films have actually had a measurable impact on our country’s culture, including how people name their children. MooseRoots used Social Security Administration data to find out the popularity of names used in the Star Wars franchise among new parents.

Here are how the top characters in this latest Installment, Episode VII, The Force Awakens stack up historically,

Poe #24

Poe Dameron is an ace pilot who takes on the Empire from the cockpit of an X-Wing Fighter. Although he is a popular character, the same can not be said for his name. The last time more than four boys were born with the name Poe was when five joined the Force in 2012.

Maz #23 Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o will portray space pirate Maz Kanata in “The Force Awakens.” Only five baby boys were born with the name Maz in 2013, the last year more than four were recorded. The name may remain so unusual, in part, because her character was called “Rose” on set to prevent film spoilers. Although the character is a woman, fewer than five girls have been born with the name Maz in any given year.

Kylo #19

Aggressive and strong with the Force, Kylo Ren is known for his unique lightsaber and quick temper. “The Force Awakens” was announced in 2012, by 2014 eight boys were born with the name Kylo.

Rey #7 Although the tough survivor from the deserts of Jakku is female in “The Force Awakens,” the name Rey is steadily rising in popularity among boys in the United States. Over 240 were born in 2014, up from just 46 in 1980.

Finn #3

Finn is a warrior with a conscience struggling to escape his past. Although the traditional Nordic name briefly fell out of favor around 1990, it has seen an extraordinary rise in popularity in recent years. Over 770 boys named Finn were born in 2014, making it the the 234th most popular boys name in the country.

Calm down KimYe Haters, the baby name ‘Saint’ Isn’t New

saint over time

Here is something for all the people hatin’ on Kim Kardashian –West and Kanye West’s son’s name, Saint. It isn’t unheard of or new even.

According to U.S. Social Security Administration statistics, in 2014, there were 32 baby boys born with the name “Saint”. Now that is out of 2 million babies born last year, making it rank 3, 413, but still.

And of all the states, Texas is way ahead of the curve because most of the children born last year named Saint were born in that state. Go Texas!

And there are and have been a few celebrities in history named Saint over time, as well.

We will be interested to see if there is an uptick in the name after this year! After all, Kim and Ye are trendsetters, whether you like them or not.

San Bernardino Shooter was a Pharmacist and A New Mom of a 6-Month Old Baby

San Bernardino shooters Tashfeen Malik and Syed Rizwan Farook – photo http://scallywagandvagabond.com/

It’s baffling to learn now that a 27-year old pharmacist and new mom to a 6-month old baby joined her husband on a shooting rampage at his office Holiday luncheon yesterday, Wednesday, December 2, killing 14 and critically injuring 17, CNN reports.

Police identified Tashfeen Malik as one of the shooters in yesterday’s deadly rampage shooting at a county office social event for the San Bernarndino County Health Department at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California.

According to relatives, Malik and her husband Syed Rizwan Farook,  a Chicago-born 5-year County employee, left their comfortable suburban home in Redlands, California, during the day, then dropped their baby girl off at her grandparents’ home early Wednesday morning, telling the grands they had a doctor’s appointment.

Nothing out of the ordinary.  Nothing tipped off the grandparents that anything sinister was being planned. It appeared to be any other ordinary sleepy day in suburbia.

Then the  young couple dressed in black masks and tactical gear, armed themselves with assault-style rifles and traveled with fake pipe bombs in their  black SUV to the office party where Farook has previously left after having an argument with co-workers there, FOX News reports.

The parents then opened fire, wreaking havoc while carrying out their deadly crime, BBC News notes. They then traveled to nearby relatives home before leading police in a high speed chase that ended with the two dead.

A third passenger in that vehicle ran. He is believed to be Farook’s brother.

Even if the events appear to have been precipitated by a fight at the holiday party, with all that gear, ammunition and bombs officials found in the couple’s vehicle and home, it looks more like this was a planned attack.

Farook traveled to Saudia Arabia recently, his co-workers confirm.  Many thought he was going to perform hajj, a pilgrimage that devout Muslims are required to do in their lifetime.  The Los Angeles Times reports that he may have gone to pick up  his wife that he met in an online dating site and then traveled to Saudi Arabia to bring her back to America after getting married.

Someone found his dating profile on a site for people with disabilities and second marriage that his parents created for him, and another one on MuslimDating.com.

Coworkers described Farook as “quiet and polite” with “no obvious grudges with anyone in the office.”   Griselda Reisinger, who worked with Farook before leaving the department in May, told the LA Times, “he never struck me as a fanatic, he never struck me as suspicious.”

Reisinger said she heard that the office recently threw a baby shower for Farook and that he had taken paternity leave.

He was well-liked, others said.  ABC News  reported about another co-worker who described Farook as “reserved, rarely starting a conversation on his own”  and  “appeared committed to his family, and never displayed any unusual behavior or discussed any radical political views.”

Co-workers told the Los Angeles Times Farook was a devout Muslim but didn’t talk about religion at work.

The Internet sleuths were busy, working overtime scraping Linked In profile pages and Faceook pages coming up with these images:

Farook’s LinkedIn and Facebook profiles have since been scrubbed from the Internet.

I hesitate including them here since they haven’t been verified but the photos left me haunted at how a seemingly loving and nurturing couple of new parents would abandon their baby to carry out such a murderous crime.

Baffling!

And now that poor baby will grow to learn about the horrible deeds her parents did and may be given grief for it by others or at least have to live with the awareness of their actions which left her parent-less at the same time.

That’s heavy and unfortunate and sad.

5 Things I had on My Pre-Baby Bucket List (And $75 Pre-Natal Product GIVEAWAY)

pre baby bucket list bellyitchblog.com happyfamily.com

After getting married  a couple years after law school, my husband and I decided to start a family, but before then, I already knew that there were things on my pre-baby bucket list I had to enjoy before taking on the challenges of parenthood. We didn’t call it a “bucket list” back then, but the concept was the same.

I was one of the first among my friends to marry and would be among the first to have kids, still I had a few other law school buddies who had children so I knew of all that was involved in child rearing.

Being the eldest of 4 children in my family, I had spent a substantial amount of my pre teens to college years babysitting, looking after my siblings or helping relatives and family friends care for cousins and other children in their family. So, I had an inkling of what was involved with child-rearing. I was well in the know that I had to get my free-spirit on before joining mommyhood.

Here is a list of things I did before jumping into the parenting pool.

traveling

1. Traveled on a moment’s notice – Back then and still today, last dirt cheap minute fares to far off places, spas and other locales came easy. Once you signed up for last minute deals emails, you could get an alert in your inbox on Thursdays, for example, purchase your ticket by Friday and be in the air after work. After children, the opportunities for such impromptu adventures are near impossible.

2. Spend Freely – Owing to number #1, most of the money you earned belong to you so you could splurge on a last minute trip, buy that expensive handbag, go out to eat twice a week because there was no other person’s college fund you needed to be saving for or some baby’s 1st birthday party you needed to use up all your rainy day fund to plan and throw.

3. Sleep in– Before kids, Sundays meant sleeping in. Saturdays wouldn’t yet involve games, practices, rehearsals, recitals, trips to the zoo, museums, and festivals. While all of those things are fun and I really enjoy cheering my children on and watching them perform or enjoy themselves at a craft fair, sleeping in and reading the Sunday paper in bed all day was a luxury too I enjoyed pre-having a family of my own.

4. Not have to clean regularly – After children, you no longer have the privilege of cleaning your home on Saturday and not have it messed up again until mid week or well into the following week before needing a new cleaning. Having a family of three or more means having more people to clean up after and less uncluttered spaces because families can be messy.

5. Take adult classes – I didn’t grow up in a family where we could afford classes, so before having kids, I enrolled myself in a host of fun classes: ballet, tennis, adult gymnastics, pottery, painting, cooking, whatever was available, I did. And again, having disposable income for myself, I could afford to!

Having enjoyed that life, I wouldn’t trade in the one I have now for anything in the world.  I am glad my husband and I had a chance to grow a little nest egg so we could buy a home for our future kids to grow up in. Today, there are more  resources, inventions, services and products available to parents that I wish I had available to me.

For example, I recently learned about Happy Mama which is the first organic baby food to expand into the prenatal category, offering Mom and Baby an easy nutrition solution throughout the First 1,000 Days, by starting as far back as the womb. How novel!

happy mama

You know like before, most of the products available aimed to give newborns, infants and babies a healthy start at birth.

But, the NEW Happy Mama® Prenatal collection is changing the trajectory of children’s health through nutrition by getting to baby before birth and making sure mom is in optimal health from the beginning of her pregnancy journey. We were gifted a generous package of the products to sample out and really enjoyed them!

The Happy Mama Prenatal collection includes a host of nourishing and healthy products including; Fruit + Veggie Blends, Probiotic Supplements and Gummies.

Another great thing about the collection is that it offers extra vitamins and nutrients that moms-to-be need like DHA, Choline, Calcium and Fiber, which they may not get from their diet or prenatal multi-vitamin alone.

When you can’t keep foods down because you’re suffering from nausea or morning sickness, these vitamins will come in pretty handy!

The Probiotic Supplement is flavor-free and easily dissolves in water – plus it’s a taste-less addition to soft foods. The supplement helps support Baby’s developing immune system. As you may know, probiotic supplements are also great for keeping one regular and are great for digestion and easing heartburn and other digestive woes that increase during pregnancy.

We’ve gone past the days of the ginormous yucky tasting pre-natal vitamins. Thank God!

Companies have gotten more inventive and are taking mom’s taste buds into account. Happy Mama’s Prenatal Gummies, for example, provide extra essential nutrition for Mama-to-be, such as Omega-3s, DHA, Choline and Vitamin D, with each bottle containing yummy gummies in three flavors: lemon, berry and orange. They are deelish! We tried them. Yummy!

Better than candy because the prenatal gummy is a supplement to your daily prenatal/multi-vitamin and it’s needed because the top prenatal vitamins on the market do not provide you with the recommended value of DHA, Choline or Vitamin D.

The Happy Mama Prenatal collection is available at Target as part of the Made to Matter—Handpicked by Target™ product collection in the women’s health aisle, but before you buy some, you can win the line from Happy Mama here! Open to US only from Now until November 13. Many ways to enter. Daily Entry options available!

Inside Coco Austin’s Baby Baby Shower thrown by David Tutera

Mystery solved!

Celebrity designer David Tutera taped another episode for his WE TV show David Tutera CELEBrations Thursday night at New York City’s Cedar Lake Events which was a pre-birthday party for Coco Austin and IceT‘s soon-to-be born baby girl Chanell Nicole. This will be the couple’s first child. Austin is 8 months along but hardly looks it.

The black and white cake in a signature Chanel quilted print featured in the official WE TV photos was super cute.

I love the red, black and white-themed decor. The event looked elegant and can be viewed more during this season of Tutera’s show!

Celebrity blogger B.Scott has loads of pics from the event on his blog which you can check out HERE!

It was not an official baby shower because her mom and sister threw her that a week prior in Arizona. Love the Chanel shower cake and her dress is super cute in the photo Coco posted on her Facebook account.

Ultimate Princess: After 117 years, finally A Baby Girl Born in this Irish Family

irish fam

It was 1898 when the last baby girl was born in the May family of Ireland and after 117 years of waiting, the fam finally got its first female child.

Saoirse Grace May was born last Thursday to Laurence and Leanne May.

Only male babies were born to the May family from Ballinrobe, Mayo, for more than a century.

But that all changed when Saoirse Grace May arrived last week to proud parents Laurence and Leanne May.

“It’s terrific because we’ve gone so long without a girl in the family,” proud dad Laurence said. “There’s great excitement, everyone was delighted. We had great celebrations. We didn’t know it was going to be a girl, it was a surprise.”

He said he checked the family history records and was shocked to learn it had been so long since a girl was born.

“I checked the census records from 1901 and the last girl to be born in the family was 1898 when my grand aunt Anne was born”, reported the Daily Mirror.

Anne would have been Saoirse’s great-grand aunt.

“I’m an only child and my father is an only child so I don’t have any nieces or nephews.”

Little Saoirse was born at University Hospital Galway and Laurence said he hoped it heralded a new age for the May family and joked: “It could be all girls from here on in — you never know”

REPORT: These are the BEST and WORST States to Have a Baby in America

best and worst

September is a great month. It is also one of the most popular months for babies to be born in America.
As can be imagined, having a baby is the most expensive in America. My last c-section bill was $11,000 before insurance coverage! Therefore, I am not surprised.

Leading personal finance Website WalletHub did an in-depth analysis and came up with 2015’s Best and Worst States to Have a Baby.

To help expectant parents gauge their baby-planning costs, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 21 key metrics.

The site’s data metrics considered included: delivery costs, average annual infant-care costs, the per-capita number of midwives and OB-GYNs, and the per-capita number of child care centers.

Key Stats

  • The average annual infant-care costs in the District of Columbia are four times more expensive than in Mississippi.
  • The infant-death rate in Mississippi is twice as high as in Iowa.
  • Vermont has nine times more child care centers per capita than West Virginia.
  • The rate of low birth-weight in Mississippi is twice as high as in Alaska.
  • The District of Columbia has 13 times more OB-GYNs per capita than Alabama.
  • California has the best parental leave policies, whereas 17 states — such as Arizona, Michigan or South Carolina — tied for the worst.

One year after having a Baby, Brit Jessica Ennis-Hill wins Heptathalon Gold at Beijing

One year ago, Jessica Ennis-Hill was giving birth to her son Reggie and today she is the gold Heptathalon champion at the Beijing World Track and Field Championships.

It was only last January 2014 that Ennis-Hill announced to the world that she would not compete  in the Commonwealth Games due to her pregnancy.  Back then, news reports focused on whether the then-newly married track and field star’s pregnancy would make her better or not.

Ennis was not phased and remained focused, telling The Independent, “I am 100 per cent set on returning to full time athletics once our baby is born and go for a second gold medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016,” she said.

One commenter doubted it:

“Is it possible to come back from Olympic gold as a heptathlete and go on to Rio?” English 2010 Commonwealth heptathlon champion Louise Hazel told the BBC. ” It throws a huge question over the continuation of a career as a heptathlete and that’s just being realistic.”

The heptathlon includes seven events: 100 meter, 200 meters, 800 meters, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin throw.

On July 17, 2014, Ennis-Hill welcomed her son, Reggie, with husband Andy Hill and today, August 23, 2015, she’s a gold medalist heptathalete.

Guess Hazel was wrong.

Besides, there is a history of other women coming back from motherhood and continuing in their greatness, as The Independent summarized:

Paula Radcliffe won the New York marathon in November 2007, just 10 months after her first child, Isla, was born.

US marathon runner Kara Goucher set a new personal best – beating her old time by more than a minute – at the 2011 Boston marathon, a year after giving birth.

The British long-distance runner Jo Pavey recorded the second-fastest time for an over 35-year-old and the second fastest time for a British athlete in the 10,000m at the 2012 Olympics – watched by her three-year-old son Jacob.

The US beach volleyball gold medallist Kerri Walsh Jennings, already a mother of two, was five weeks pregnant when competing at London 2012…

while hockey player Keli Smith Puzo

….and modern pentathlete Mickey Kelly were just two of many mothers to compete in what were dubbed the “Women’s Games”

Even for these games, Ennis-Hill said she did not want to leave behind her one-year-old son Reggie and husband Andy if she did not have a realistic chance of a medal. Apparently, she did so well at the Anniversary Games last month showing Ennis-Hill figured she had a shot at a medal after all.

Never underestimate a strong-willed mom…and her supportive team.

“It’s hard with a newborn at the beginning and you’re just into everything and then getting back into training and thinking about everyone that’s helped me, my family, Toni and the team around me,” she said. “They’ve been patient and believed I can get back to this point.”

Three cheers also for parents who support the dreams of their superstar athletic children.

Ennis-Hill’s parents, including her dad who was a sprinter in his native Jamaica before emigrating to the UK and a mom who shot javelin as a kid, were not interested in pursuing their own personal early interests in sport but encouraged Ennis-Hill who had a talent and passion to compete since age 10. They sacrificed weekends and loads of money on hotel stays and flights for meets, and almost got derailed after a career-ending injury at age 21, the Telegraph’s report states.

But Ennis-Hill’s determination (and good looks) got her corporate endorsement deals that helped her keep going until she started slaying at various meets again! Awesome sauce!

Today, Ennis-Hill endorses several products, is a Jaguar brand ambassador and the face of UK track and field.

Celebrity Couples whose Union Didn’t Survive Their Baby’s First Birthdays

bellyitcblog.com spli up

US Weekly reports that Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green have split after 11 years together.

It is the latest in a slate of high-profile celeb break ups this summer including Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Sienna Miller and Tom Sturridge, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick, Charlize Theron and Sean Penn, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton.

Break ups are sad and we’ve notice that in the 7 years that Bellyitch Blog has been in existence, a substantial amount of celebrity women who we have had on our “bumpwatch” list have broken up with their respective significant others.

Some broke up before the baby was even born: Christina Milian, Kelis, Heidi Klum and January Jones, and many more split with their respective hubby/baby daddies before they even gave birth.

Last year, CiaraEva Marcille (nee Pigford),  and Amber Rose split with their partners before each of  their baby’s turned 6 months old. The separations have been messy, still.  A few years ago, Selma Blair and her ex Jason Bleick split up 14 months after welcoming their first child together.

Others we’ve covered who have called it quits include: The Jamie Foxx show actress Garcelle Beauvais, TV host Padma Lakshmi from Top Chef, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Freeman from My Wife and Kids, Lauryn Hill, Kimora Lee Simmons (Djimon Hounsou days), Hilary Duff, Fantasia, Halle Berry, Jill Scott, Kate Hudson, Jamie Lyn Spears, Lauren London, Monyetta Shaw (NeYo’s ex), Golden Brooks from “Girlfriends”.

At this point, it’s probably safer to start chronicling those who are still together because they are the new exception, not the rule in Hollywood, it seems. But hey, so long as everyone is happier and better off apart and the off-springs are co-parented well with little to minimum drama, right?

No judgment from us, okay. We’re  just pointing out the trends and facts. Just the facts, ma’am, just the facts! (*smirk*)
