10 Clues Your Child’s Daycare Center is Overcrowded

overcrowded daycare

Many people, by now, have seen that horrible online video that has gone viral of a 9 or 10 year old kid physically abusing and violently shaking small babies in a crowded home daycare. The caregiver in charge of the room is seen on surveillance on the telephone and essentially ignoring the small infants and toddlers in her care while one of the centers older kids does some pretty horrible things to these small kids. I could hardly watch the entire video when I saw it. It is one more thing to frighten new parents who have to return to work and have to find child care options for their kids. Grrr.

It’s why this NannyJobs posting, it shared with us featuring 10 clues the daycare you are contemplating placing your child in may be overcrowded is quite timely and resourceful:

  1. Constant illnesses – One of the first signs to watch for is constant illnesses. Spreading germs in a daycare is pretty much inevitable, but overcrowding only makes it worse. If your child is continually sick, this could be a problem with the daycare facility being stretched to its limits.
  2. Behavioral problems – Another common problem with overcrowded daycares is lack of supervision. This can lead to behavioral problems if left unchecked. Children can become argumentative, defiant and unruly if left unsupervised for long periods of time.
  3. Injuries – Children who experience overcrowding in local daycares are prone to more injuries. These can often be minor things like scratches and bruises or more major concerns such as cuts or burns. Lack of supervision can lead to kids fighting amongst themselves or getting into things they shouldn’t be allowed to.
  4. Stalled development – Without adequate emphasis on learning and activities, children from overcrowded day care centers can have stalled development. They need constant interaction and stimulation to develop new skills and progress normally, which can be hard to do when teachers are constantly trying to manage too many children.
  5. Children not being clean – If your child is often grubby when you pick him up from the daycare, this could be another sign of overcrowding. It’s difficult to keep active kids clean all the time, but if this is a common occurrence, it could be a cause for concern.
  6. High turnover rate – Local daycare facilities with a high child turnover rate could also be a sign of overcrowding. Some parents may be forced to place their children in a less desirable facility until there’s an opening elsewhere. These daycares may also take on too many kids because of the volatile client base.
  7. Owner is stressed – Another sign of daycare overcrowding is when the owner is in a perpetual state of distress. Trying to care for too many children day after day and keep up the illusion that nothing is amiss must be very stressful, and will eventually wear on even the most composed of people.
  8. Unsanitary conditions – A common thing parents and daycare inspectors look for in daycare facilities is unsanitary conditions. This is not always a good indicator because overcrowded facilities can be kept spotlessly clean while others are not. However it is something to watch for.
  9. Difficulty keeping staff – Overcrowded local daycares often have trouble keeping staff. If you notice constant staff changes at a facility that could be another warning sign. Caring for too many children and trying to hide it from others is not a job anyone wants to do for very long.
  10. Headcount – Of course the most obvious sign of overcrowding is to get an accurate headcount of children being cared for and the number of staff. You then need to check with your state standards to find out what the acceptable limits are. Your own personal standards must also be considered when making a determination

Good luck, sleuthing, parents!

Here are 10 Easy Valentine’s Day Crafts For Your Child

valentine's day crafts for kids

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and soon you’ll be scrambling to find activities for your little ones to do while celebrating the day together! Here are a few ideas to get you going.
  1. Make heart shaped pancakes – Make heart shaped pancakes for breakfast! Put pancake batter into a squeeze bottle and draw heart pancakes on the griddle! You can also cut sandwiches, deli meats, and fruits into heart shapes using cookie cutters. Creating heart shaped cupcakes or muffins is simple, just drop a marble or rolled up piece of tinfoil between the baking liner and muffin tin before baking to create an indent in the finished product, it will look just like a heart!
  2. Create a conversation heart wreath – Cut the middle out of a paper plate to create a ring. Have your children help you cut out hearts and write short messages on them such as “I love you” or “You rock” and glue the hearts onto the ring to create a conversation heart wreath. Be creative with your phrases and make them special to your family.
  3. Make your own valentines – Younger children will usually have a party in their classroom to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their classmates, so take some time to help your child create their own cards. They don’t have to be fancy, all you need is some construction paper, glitter glue, stickers, doilies, and adhesive to jump start the creativity in your child. Encourage your child to be creative and let them create whatever they want to, the cards don’t all have to be the same as long as there is one for every child in their class.
  4. Valentine’s Day scramble – Post a piece of paper on the wall that has the words “Valentine’s Day” on it and see how many words you can create from those letters, adjusting to the age of the children around you. How many words can you find? You could also add the traditional candy heart phrases and see what additional words you can make using those letters.
  5. Hold a Valentine’s Day dance party – Invite your neighbors over for a fun, family friendly dance party! Decorate the room with streamers and balloons, choose a few fun songs together, and get ready to dance!
  6. Themed worksheets – A quick search online will turn up dozens of Valentine’s Day themed worksheets, from math sheets to crosswords, so you can easily find something to meet your child’s needs.
  7. Love themed books – Hit up the library for books with a Valentine’s Day or love theme; most libraries will have seasonally appropriate books on a separate shelf, which makes finding them easy. Check a few out and read them together!
  8. Create coupon books for family members – Talk about what love is and what it means and then discuss various coupons you could create to show family members that you care about them. Offer to walk the dog for free, give a back rub, have one on one time, play a game together or offer to sweep the floor. The receiver can then choose when to redeem the coupons. Coupon books are a great way for kids to be able to give back to the family without a monetary contribution.
  9. Go pink and red! – Create a pink and red theme! Pink lemonade, strawberry milk, cupcakes with pink frosting, watermelon, beets, strawberries, and apples are all great pink and red foods to offer for snack time.
  10. Make a paper heart chain – Use your cutting and gluing skills to create a chain of hearts to hang up in your house! You can either create a chain by cutting hearts out like you would with paper dolls or cut out hearts together and tape or staple them together to create a chain of unique hearts. Hang them where everyone can enjoy them.

Good luck and have fun!

Ivanka and Chelsea: Two Pregnant Women are Stumping for their Parent to become the Next US President

trump hillary

Two pregnant women are stumping for their respective parent to become the next President of the United States.

Ivanka Trump, who is expecting her third child this year with husband Jared Kushner, is seen on a relatively recent campaign ad for her dad Donald J. Trump, who is vying for the Republican nomination.

On the Democratic side, former First Daughter, Chelsea Clinton with second baby in tow in her tummy, has been a surrogate on talk shows and campaign events for her mom Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Chelsea and her husband, Melvin Mezvinsky are parents to 1-year daughter Charlotte. Ivanka and Jared are parents to 4-year old Arabella and 2-year old Joseph.

No one better say pregnant women can’t do it all. These two are incubating a human while being a formidable campaign fundraising force.

Bravo ladies! Look at them at work:

The 7 Reason Mothers Don’t Take Alone Time (INFOGRAPHIC)

no alone time

It would be unheard of for an employed person to work 365 days of a year without taking a vacation. Motherhood involves 24 hour work at times, yet many moms do not take alone time.  There are many reasons mothers don’t get much needed alone time. Sometimes it’s the circumstances and sometimes we get in our own way. Here are 7 reasons (and an infrographic) why personal time escapes many mothers.

  1. Mothers have to do everything – Some moms believe that nothing, absolutely nothing, will get done without them. They need to oversee every detail of family life and make sure things are running smoothly. As long as they have that outlook and it works for everyone concerned, chances are nothing is going to change.
  2. Perfectionism – The perfect mother doesn’t need alone time, or so she thinks. Trying to live up to the unattainable image of the supermom is a sure way to crash and burn.
  3. Demanding kids – Sometimes little ones can be extremely demanding; Mom cannot even go to the bathroom alone. Children like this want to know where Mommy is every minute and she’d better not get out of their eyesight. The idea of alone time for such a mom is just a pipe dream.
  4. Absentee Fathers– If you have a husband that doesn’t support your alone time, it might be much harder to get. Some fathers are kind enough to take the kids while Mom goes off and does something she wants to do or maybe even stays home and takes a bubble bath. But for the mother who doesn’t have that kind of support at home, finding the time to be by herself can be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Mothers who don’t have a backup parent or other family support around them can find it especially difficult to find time for themselves. Trading babysitting favors with other single moms and making time in the early morning or late evenings when the kids are in bed may be options for these moms.
  5. Over scheduled – Similar to the busy mom this mom is always on the go, but she has some down time. The only problem is that her down time is spent with other people. She’s waiting for the kids to do this or that, she’s at dance rehearsals or foot ball practice. With a little help she could actually manage to get some alone time in there somewhere.
  6. Too busy – Some mothers are workaholics and doing too much all the time to take a break. Every minute is planned and used to the max. This mom gets tons of things accomplished, except perhaps some much needed self care.
  7. Guilt feelings – There are mothers who just feel so guilt ridden about taking private time for themselves, they can’t bring themselves to do it. It feels as if they are stealing time away from the family.

A Look At Chrissy Teigen’s 2nd Trimester Maternity Style

teigens' style

And now for the portion of our coverage when we dissect Chrissy Teigen’s second trimester looks.

Teigen announced  in October that she was expecting her first child with her husband John Legend and we have been loving her maternity style!

Teigen hilariously told InStyle Australia and she and Legend come from a family of bigger people and said they have to watch what they eat and exercise otherwise they’ll blow up.

Well, you wouldn’t be able to tell by the way she remained pretty svelte and still able to get away with some edgy fashion for her second trimester of her pregnancy.  She stuck with A-line dresses but didn’t shy away from mixing and matching pieces too.

  1. I love the color of this Malene Birgir vertical striped silk dress. Hey, when you’ve got the legs, right?! Teigen went with Givenchy Clark Shark Lock Suede Sandals in a neutral color to match her camel colored coat. Fab!
  2. I did a Splurge/Steal post on this very cute outfit Teigen wore shortly after announcing her pregancy. There was tremendous buzz over the outfit because it was sheer as well.

  3. I like the plaid A-Line  shirt dress Teigen while out and about. It’s freeing yet still stylish.  This Peak-lapel wool-blend coat by Mugler worn overtop is fierce and as it should be when paired with a sharp black Hermes Birkin bag. And I want those Chloe platform boots but am bummed they’re sold out at Neiman’s. Shucks! Teigen capped off the look with a pair of aviator shades by Victoria Beckham.

  4. Teigen loves her friend Beckham who outfitted her in this cute white mini dress. It is simple and chic and the bun makes it even cuter. And I was surprised to find out thse gold Kurt Geiger KG Hero Platforms are reasonably priced at just $64. Nice!

5. This Lace Trimmed Pencil Skirt dress by Self Portrait actually sold out, I believe after it was part of a trending topic on Social Media. Teigen wore look at an event also during the same week after she announced her pregnancy. It too was much buzzed about!

That was an A+ maternity look for the Second Trimester! Let’s see what Teigen and her stylist team bring us for this last trimester she is heading into. (if not already in)

Inside JoJo Simmons’ Brookyn Baby Shower (PHOTOS)

jojo simmons shower

JoJo Simmons always came across as the non-committal unsettled brother on Run’s House, the long running MTV reality TV show he starred in with his dad, Rev. Run of the 80s rap group Run DMC.

But it looks like JoJo is all grown up and will soon be a dad. He and his girlfriend Tanice Amira had a baby shower on Sunday, January 17  at the Milk River Restaurant and Lounge in Brooklyn, NY, to celebrate the impending arrival of the new addition to the family. His sister Angela Simmons was there as was his R&B crooning brother Diggy and the baby Russell (who isn’t the baby anymore)

It looks like the theme was royal and gold was a central color of the theme. There was a cake shaped like a little throne.  The couple are expecting a daughter and they have already given her a name, Mia.

Very pretty. Take a look of the rest of the pics by event photographer Tristate photos, Bloom Cakes and Malista Batista photo as shared on IG.

7 Last Minute Ways You and Your Kids Can Celebrate the #MLKDay of Service

MLK Day 1.18.2016 Corporation for National and Community Service

Today, Monday, January 18, 2016, is the MLK Day of Service.

A few Hollywood celebrities including our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Kerry Washington took the time today to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr and the service holiday today in his honor.

  1. As the award-winning actress suggest, take some time off today to get the kids the listen to at least one or a snippet of the Civil Rights hero’s famous speeches.

If you didn’t enroll you or your children to participate in one of the  many service activities organized around the nation, there is still time for you and the children to do something kind on their own for their neighbors or fellow man.

Here are a 6 other  suggestions besides watching a speech and reflecting on its meaning:

  1. Take garbage bags down to the town creek or some other littered area near your home and clean it up.
  2. Make sandwiches and pack fruit and a snack into about a few dozen brown bags and pass them to homeless people in the closest town or city to you.

  3. Gather old toys and bag them up to donate to Goodwill or a local family shelter.

  4. Call a local home for the elderly and ask if you can come by and play cards and/or board games with the residents.

  5. Make Homemade colorful Get Well Greetings cards to send to a local children’s hospital/

  6. Make Festive Thank You Cards to send to the local USO to ship off to military serving abroad.

Good luck and Happy MLK Day of Service!

The 7 Tips You Need to Read Before Going Back to School After Having a Baby

You don’t have to let the fact that you had a baby before or in the middle of college deter you from returning or starting. Despite all the obstacles and challenges associated with returning to school after a baby, if you put in a plan, you certainly can do it and findAnanny.com wants you to use these beneficial suggestions to get it done.

1. Build a Support System – The most important thing for a student mom to have in place is a strong and reliable support system. Not only will you need help with childcare and managing the needs of your new baby while keeping up with your studies, you’ll also need a shoulder or two you can cry on when things get difficult. Finishing school as a parent will be a challenge, and having a few people in your corner can make all the difference.

2. Create a Routine That Works For Your Family – There is no hard-and-fast rule about how you have to structure your household routine, especially when your little one is still an infant. Find a schedule that works for you and build around it. If online classes are more conducive to learning and completing assignments than a traditional classroom setting, that’s the best solution for you. On the other hand, getting out of the house and interacting with your classmates may help you manage the demands of parenthood more easily. Whatever works for you is the best solution, regardless of how well it would work for someone else

3. Set Realistic Goals -You may have planned to take on a full course load before your pregnancy, but that may not be realistic after the birth of a child. Rather than setting goals that aren’t feasible and being disappointed when they prove to be a bit more than you’re ready to handle, take your time and make a plan that you can actually adhere to. Celebrate each milestone along the way and stay focused on each smaller goal as they approach

4. Work Out a Reasonable Timeline- Finishing school on the standard time table may be out of the cards for you as a new mom, and that’s okay. The goal is to finish, so take the time to figure out when you can realistically complete your studies. You may have to shoulder a lighter burden in terms of classes and finish later than some of your peers, but you’ll still leave with a diploma, which is better than trying to take on too much only to end up burned out and frustrated enough to quit school altogether. You may also have ideas of returning to school days after the birth of your child, however, that may not be possible. Finding the right time to return to school after you recover from delivery and have bonded with your new baby may be a bit more complicated than simply returning as soon as you’re discharged from the hospital.

5. Find a Caregiver You Trust – Your child will have to be cared for while you’re at school since you won’t be able to take her to class with you. To make the transition into school after becoming a new parent, you’ll need to make sure that you’ve found a childcare provider you absolutely trust and have no qualms about leaving her with. If you’re distracted and worried about your child’s safety while you’re in class, your academic performance probably won’t reflect your actual abilities.

6. Prepare for a Bit of Separation Anxiety -Regardless of how excited you are to get back into school after your maternity leave ends, you will feel at least a little bit of separation anxiety until you adjust to the idea of no longer spending the entirety of each day with the fascinating little person you’ve created. If you’re prepared for the stress of leaving your child in someone else’s care and understand that it’s just temporary, it can lessen the sting and help to make that pain a bit more manageable.

7. Don’t Be Scared to Adjust Your Schedule – As a new mom and a student, your schedule may have to be adjusted a few times until you find the one that works for you. Making adjustments is not the same as admitting defeat, so don’t be afraid to finagle things until you find the methods that work best for you and your new family.

The Lessons from Tisha Campbell-Martin Reveal on How A Sexual Abuse Past Disrupts Breastfeeding Plans

tisha martin campbell

There are many women who have psychological impediments to breastfeeding due to anxiety from past sexual abuse or rape. Dr. Ken‘s  Tisha Campell- Martin is among that group.

The comedic actress, best known for her role on the television shows Martin and My Wife and Kidsopened up for the first time in 2014 on the talk show The Daily Helpline that she was raped at the age of 3.

“It would affect me with breastfeeding my children.” the Househusbands of LA star recently shared with Madame Noir.  She continued:

I didn’t want to with the first one because I felt like I was going to hurt him. You know, that kind of thing. It’s surprising how things kind of pop up out of nowhere. I didn’t know why I felt uncomfortable doing that. I didn’t want to do it, and I felt like it was a lot of pressure for me to do it. Finally, the pediatrician was like, “Can you just stop trying? Because the baby can see your angst.” So I took the pressure off of myself, and it was easier to do it with my second child because I knew what it was then.

There is discomfort to having exposed the breast, stomach and other sensitive areas of the body that was once unwillingly exploited by an abuser. More women, their partners and spouses, doctors and health professionals are becoming aware of this additional impediment to breastfeeding.

It is well known that black women breastfeed their babies at a lower rate than White and Hispanic women, with much of the reasoning pointed to lack of family and hospital support, insufficient education and challenging work situations.

Past sexual abuse is another overlooked reason.

Blogger Leila at My Baby and Blog pointed out an article a little while ago published in Babble which noted that abuse could also impact co-sleeping, as well as breastfeeding. In the piece, Tonia, a mom of two small children, had expressed that she had a tough time breastfeeding because she was abused by an older relative as a teen.

“I breastfed my daughter, but the sensation of nursing and having to give my body over so completely and constantly was extremely unpleasant for me,” she said adding how an attempt to breastfeed her second child led to a breakdown. “Just the thought of doing it all over again, and this time with a 19-month-old [to take care of as well], made me so anxious that I broke down crying one night and decided I would be going straight to formula.”

Not all past abuse victims have breastfeeding challenges, but it is important to not judge women who choose to not breastfeed given the wide variety of reasons out there including the effect of past abuse.

So in the Mommy wars, lay off on those who chose to bottle feed. You never know…
