A Maternity Fashion Buying Guide

So you have just found out you’re pregnant – congratulations!

Now comes all of the planning for the next few hectic months ahead of you. You don’t just have to prepare everything for your new babe to come, you have to find clothes that will fit you throughout this momentous period of transition in your life.

You may not know where to start, though, so here’s a beginner’s guide to maternity fashion and how to buy the right pieces for you.

Wear what you have until you can’t

It is virtually impossible to predict how your body will change when you’re pregnant, so it’s a good idea not to go crazy and shop the minute you find out you are expecting. As a way to save some money and some extra stress, only go shopping for maternity clothes until you cannot fit in your old clothes anymore. Chances are, some of the pieces you have can be easily modified to be a bit more forgiving while you grow.

Don’t look at the sizes

Only buy what pieces really fit you properly and make you feel good! Your body will grow and change at different rates, so your clothing needs to be comfortable throughout your entire pregnancy. Don’t get caught up in maternity sizes, as they aren’t as accurate a descriptor as they claim to be. Try a few different sizes of jeans, tops, and outer layers to get a good baseline on what feels comfortable and go from there.

Keep your fashion sense

Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you have to change your fashion self. Gone are the days where pregnant mothers had to wear oversized and draped outfits that were not flattering. Nowadays, there are plenty of clothing options for you to pick from no matter your style. Plus, you don’t want to buy items you don’t feel confident in because, let’s be honest, they’ll just sit in your closet eventually anyway.

Purchase for after the pregnancy

Your body may not be able to bounce back as soon as you’d hope for after giving birth. Fortunately, maternity clothes are able to work during this transitional period, and can give you extra room and comfort while you’re working to get your body back on track. Items like maternity dresses and jeans, for example, are wonderful pieces that you can use long after the birth of your child.

Be prepared to invest in underwear

You most likely will have to invest in more underwear than any other category of clothing in your wardrobe. Be prepared to change your underwear structure every few months or so. For example, for the first three months of your pregnancy you should choose stretchy, breathable fabric for your bras as your breasts will swell a lot during this period. From three to eight months, look for a nursing bra with a thicker band to accommodate for your expanding rib cage and, for your last month or so of pregnancy, buy your bra cup size larger than usual and a smaller band size. This will be useful as your ribcage returns back to normal after giving birth.

Stock up on shoes with natural material

Shoes made of natural material, such as leather, cotton, or woven linen, will be a wonderful addition to your maternity wardrobe. These shoes are more likely to expand with your swollen feet and ankles and ensure you’re comfortable at every stage of pregnancy. Remember, you’ll be keeping all of those heels in your closet and only investing in flat shoes.

With these tips in mind, you can take the guesswork out of maternity fashion. So get out there and go shopping. It’s time to pamper yourself, mom!

Preggers Amber Rose Promotes Flat Tummy’s Pregnancy Tea

Model and actress Amber Rose is getting some heat this week for placing an ad on her Instagram page promoting organic “pregnancy tea” by the same company that hires social media influencers and celebrities to promote its “flat tummy tea.”

“Food baby or real baby @flattummyco knows bloat’s a total B—H,” Rose, real name, Amber Levonchuck, captioned a photo of herself holding an open package of the product. “They’ve just launched an Organic Pregnancy Tea to help us moms with those bloated, nauseous, blah feeling days! It’s safe to take while pregnant and breastfeeding.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/By3mfoQn4gD/

Several of those commenting lambasted the personality for what they say is promotion of a product that some say contain controversial ingredients and stimulants that may not necessarily be safe for all women.

And we could imagine there is higher sensitivity for pregnant women who are carrying a child.

” Another shameless ad for “magic tea” perpetuating the need to have a flat tummy… Now aimed at pregnant women! Ily.” one commenter replied. “You’re supposed to be a feminist. You have enough money. Seriously just stop. “

One user retorted, ” That bloating is called a baby… “

Rose has not responded to the comments.

3 Real Housewives of Potomac Share Miscarriage Loss Stories

“I really don’t think I fully dealt with my miscarriage until until I found out I was pregnant again,” an emotional Monique Samuels shares during a testimonial to last Sunday’s new episode of Bravo TV‘s Real Housewives of Potomac. “The fear and the loss just came back to me so I really had to just sit back and leave it in God’s hands”

These comments were made during her testimonial in between scenes of a party she threw last year before the birth of her third child last year, celebrating her Rainbow Baby.

A Rainbow baby is a sustainable pregnancy or live birth following the loss of a previous pregnancy or baby.

FYI: A “Unicorn baby” is one that is birthed after infertility.

About her decision to host a celebration, the wife to ex veteran NFL legend Chris Samuels: “I thought this was a good way to celebrate new life to not forget it but to learn from it and move on,” she added.

During the episode, Monique referred to her miscarried child as “her angel baby” and later released several doves in the air in honor of all the other Angel babies out there.

“I know a lot of us women share the same story and a some of us don’t choose to express and share with others but I encourage us to because there’s healing in sharing, ” she added before opening up the mic later for other women in the audience to share their stories.

During the event, her cast mate Ashley Darby, who is currently pregnant accepted the opportunity to speak about having a miscarriage at age 19 and a more recent one with her restaurateur and businessman husband, Michael Darby.

Michael broke down in tears and actually left his wife’s side at a guest table temporarily.

Another castmember of the show, Katie Rost, also is familiar with tragic pregnancy loss.

Rost, a Housewife from Season 1 and currently a “friend of the Housewives” Season 4, suffered a late term miscarriage around 4-5 months of pregnancy.

She was pregnant with her fourth child with her boyfriend, a man named Jacob earlier this year when she miscarried.

According to an Instagram social media post by Rost, Jacob infamously snapped a highly disturbing and graphic bathroom photo of Rost laying on the floor shortly after the loss happened.

She the photo on her Instagram page before taking it down, but not before the gossip press got their hands on it and made it a story.

While in a vulnerable state, snapping a pic is not kind but I do not want to judge her decision to then post such a private and sacred moment on social media but yeah, that’s a heavy situation.

Photo of Rost’s kids and another young girl from Rost’s GoFundMe page

Rost is currently involved in a bitter custody dispute with her ex husband James Orsini over visitation rights with her children, son, James Rocco Orsini and twin daughters Renee Rost Orsini and Kathryn Rost Orsini who she lost full custody to. She has previously accused James of being mentally, physically and financially abusive to her.

Editor’s Note:

I could relate to Samuels’ later comment on the show about living in fear after getting pregnant again.

After I lost my first ever pregnancy about 17 years ago, my husband and I were extremely anxious and scared our second would end the same, with another loss.

We even went as far as purchased a portable ultrasound so we could constantly monitor the baby’s heartbeat anytime we wanted without having to go to the doctor’s for an appointment.

Now baby Samuels, Chase Omari, is here and Baby Darby is on the way and with a gig as a Friend of, hopefully Rost is in a better place and getting more support.

Study: Pregnant Women Space Themselves from Others Farther Apart

man and woman in office standing far apart

Are pregnant women really more prone to forgetfulness and spacey behavior? Research looking into “pregnancy brain” have had mixed results.

But a new study from Anglia Ruskin University and Addenbrooke’s Hospital shows that pregnant women are much more alert and vigilant than their peers, even subconsciously seeking out more personal space – as much as 26 inches.

“Pregnancy involves massive and rapid changes to the body both externally, as the body suddenly changes shape, and internally, while the fetus is growing,” lead author Dr. Flavia Cardini of Anglia Ruskin said. “Our results suggest that when the body undergoes significantly large changes, at the stage when the abdomen is clearly expanded, the maternal brain also begins to make adjustments to the space immediately surrounding the body.”

The researchers used an audio-tactile test with more than 80 pregnant women in their second and third trimesters, along with 41 women who weren’t pregnant. In three sessions, they played threatening sounds and then used a small tapper attached to their abdomen to provide a “touch” sensation.

On average, personal space is the space within about an arm’s length, though that can vary by culture, age and environment.

And it can apparently also vary based on the stage of pregnancy.

The researchers from Anglia Ruskin and Addenbrooke’s found that during the third trimester, pregnant women subconsciously seek out more personal space. However, they showed little difference on space preference in the second trimester or after birth compared to women who were not pregnant.

MTV OGs at the MTV Movie & TV Awards Red Carpet

Audrina Patridge, Heidi Montag and Jennifer Farley at MTV Movie and TV Awards

Because the MTV Movie and TV Awards are so youth centered, there weren’t that many moms rocking the red carpet.

Of course though, the MTV OGs from The Hills and Laguna Beach Audrina Patridge and newest mom Heidi Montag were there, as was the cast from the network’s Jersey Shore: The Reunion which was up for the “Reality Royalty” award like Jennifer “JWoww” Farley and others.

My fave looks came from Jada Pinkett Smith‘s silver pant suit, Brie Larson‘s Buterfly top and pant ensemble by David Koma and Vanderpump Rules co stars Lala Kent and Stassi Schroeder in a white turtleneck and miniskirt by Magda Butrym who both looked stunning!

Shchroeder’s barely there make up looked great and the feathered boa accented her look perfectly!

Serena Williams was nominated for “Best Real Life Hero” for her work on her short HBO docu-series, Being Serena

JWoww wore a black minidress from Fashion Nova and black and white pumps. Patridge accented her black long split gown with jewels: a Liven Co snake ring, a Zoe Lev “X” ring, and silver clutch. Montag went with a vintage Gucci jumpsuit.

Secrets to Getting Free Audible Books This Summer {My Picks}

How I fake staying sharp and cultured by “reading” Classics and new best sellers with an Audible membership and get free titles in the process

As a work from home mom, sometimes my days include traveling to client events, chauffeuring kids to sporting events, waiting, waiting and doing more waiting.

I like to fill in these times by listening to podcasts and recently learned I could listen to Michelle Obama‘s record-shattering best selling book “Becoming” versus read the hardback book someone got me as a gift.

The best thing: it was free and part of two complimentary titles I received with a trial membership.

I could have canceled after the trial was over, but am hooked. I decided to keep it and have a long list of other audio books I plan to “read”.

It’s perfect for people like me who have every intention to read books but never get around to it.

A popular post on this blog is 11 Books on my Bookshelf that I have every intention of reading but never make time to.

A monthly Audible membership and books on tape solve this problem.

You get two free titles with your monthly subscription which amounts to less than the cost of one book so it pays for itself quickly each month and forces you to keep it up.

I love crossing them off my list. SIGN UP For a FREE MONTH and enjoy your TWO FREE TITLES!

This year’s Summer titles list includes:

Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens

“Narrator Cassandra Campbell serves up a bushel of Carolina accents in this debut novel by nature writer Delia Owens. Campbell’s accents give the mix of classes and regions in the story the same realistic detail Owens provides for the marsh…. Prepare to be enchanted and haunted.” (AudioFile)

Sing, Unburied Sing” by Jesmyn Ward

“While the magical element is new in Ward’s fiction, her allusiveness, anchored in her interest in the politics of race, has been pointing in this direction all along. It takes a touch of the spiritual to speak across chasms of age, class, and color. … The signal characteristic of Ward’s prose is its lyricism. ‘I’m a failed poet,’ she has said. The length and music of Ward’s sentences owe much to her love of catalogues, extended similes, imagistic fragments, and emphasis by way of repetition. … The effect, intensified by use of the present tense, can be hypnotic.” — The New Yorker

Becoming” by Michelle Obama

“Obama writes with a refreshing candor, as though her keen awareness of her celebrity is matched only by her eagerness to shed the exhausting veneer that helped enable her husband’s political rise. ‘My husband is making his own adjustments to life after the White House, catching his own breath,’ she writes at the end of the preface. ‘And here I am, in this new place, with a lot I want to say.’” — The Atlantic

“Getting Things Done: the art of stress-free productivity” by David Allen (I own the book version too)

David Allen reads an all-new edition of his popular self-help classic for managing work-life balance in the 21st century – now updated for the new challenges facing individuals and organizations in today’s rapidly changing world.

“Though Thomas’s story is heartbreakingly topical, its greatest strength is in its authentic depiction of a teenage girl, her loving family, and her attempts to reconcile what she knows to be true about their lives with the way those lives are depicted — and completely undervalued — by society at large.” — Publishers Weekly

Emma” by Jane Austen (a classic)

” What a delightful way to enjoy a Jane Austen story! This dramatized version alternates between dialogue and Emma Thompson’s narration over music. I thought the narrators were all excellent, and the sound effects and music really pulled me into the world of Emma. If you are an Austen fan, be aware that this is not a word for word reading. Rather, it is a new way to enjoy a familiar story. ” – Reader Reviewer

“Heavy: An American Memoir” by Kiese Laymon

Heavy is a dark book, and the trauma that Laymon orbits is almost like a black hole; its shape is circular. Even when he finally tries to have an honest conversation with his mother (at a casino, of all places) about the things he’s experienced, the harms that befell him, it’s still impossible for either one to understand the other without blame.” — The Nation

Instant Millionaire MakeUp Mogul Raynell ‘SupaCent’ Steward’s journey thru Pregnancy, Severe Memory Loss

image of Raynell "Wuzzam Supa Cent" Steward

Pregnancy and childbirth can trigger weight gain, temporary depression and a myriad of other physical and mental health issues and for the creator of make up brand dedicated to amateur make up users, The Crayon Case, SupaCent, the symptom of giving birth recently, sadly, has been severe memory loss.

Raynell “Wuzzam Supa” Steward aka @SupaCent on Instagram, a social media -star- turned makeup mogul, famously made over one million in minutes with her popular cosmetics line, last Black Friday 2018.

She repeated her success this year during Valentine’s Day.

Then, she got pregnant and was very transparent and open about the entire process down, chronicling her very difficult pregnancy with her millions of fans and followers on social media and giving them a blow-by-blow from water breaking to birth of her second child, daughter Leà Mae Leagea, and after.

However, recently, according to her loved ones and family, Supa has been experiencing severe memory loss and is having a difficult time post-partum.

After giving birth in March, she hared some now-deleted photos of herself in the hospital and requested prayers from fans.

In her Instagram Story, Steward said she had her boyfriend take her to familiar places to help jog her apparently failing memory, and added that one of her doctors recommended that she see a neurologist.

Mild forgetfulness and so-called “pregnancy brain” is a known and scientifically acknowledge phenomenon that happens among expecting women. However, loss, which is on the lines of dementia-like levels is very unheard of.

Nonetheless, a research study conducted 2009 from Dr. Diane Farrar of the Maternal and Child Research team at the Bradford Institute for Health Research in London discovered the brain can remain foggy three months after birth too.

It was hypothesized that she had a liver dysfunction that triggered the memory loss but as of today, it is still unclear.

Her last Instagram photos shows her entire head wrapped in a bandage, perhaps an indication that she has undergone some sore of surgery to to th brain or head.

In any event, about a week ago, her publicists released a statement asking for privacy.

She’s slated to get married to the father of his child in the coming months.

Here is to wishing she recovers, and regains what she has lost and can be stronger for her baby girl.

TRENDING: How to Rock a Summer Hair Scarf

Summer hair scarf collage

Ready! Set! Summer!

Uncomplicate your Summer style by using one trendy trick to add fun and flare to your regular look: A scarf (or a twilly as it’s sometime called)

Weave a scarf in your braid, wear it as a wrap around a pixie or short cropped hair or tie it around a pony tail. The possibilities are numerous.

Go with a solid color to match an outfit with a print or pair a scarf with a bold print to liven up a plain dress or simple ensemble to make it summery.

Here’s a roundup of some fun Summer styles we peeped on PopSugar last Summer and a few of our faves.
