#NYFW: Pregnant Models Stun On Red Carpets and Catwalks

New York Fashion Week did not pass without some expecting ladies making headlines. A very 5-months preggers model Lily Aldridge walked the runway to the Brandon Maxwell show at the Classic Car Club wearing a backless crimson  dress from his collection with her hair sleeked back in a parted pony.

Fenty x Puma, Marc Jacobs and Yeezy Season 2 model Slick Woods is expecting her first son with fellow model Adonis Bosso looked supreme fashionable chic while posing on red carpets to various shows she attended.

Model Slick Woods on the Red Carpet at various shows featuring her baby bump loud and proud.

This is a trend that takes off from this Summer’s breastfeeding model who nursed her 5-month old baby during Sports Illustrated Swimwear week in Miami, Florida.

Last year at NYFW, designer Eckhaus Latta made waves when he sent model and artist Maia Ruth Lee down the catwalk wearing a button-up dress that opened around her baby-carrying belly

“So proud to walk the Brandon Maxwell runway 5 months pregnant! I’ve walked few runways in my life and this is a moment that I’ll look back on forever with great emotion. Thank you Brandon for letting me shine and being such a true gentleman, Love you forever,” Aldridge wrote in the caption to her photo she shared on Instagram.

You can still get into the spirit by adding temporary color to your hair, painting your nails in festive Halloween colors or wearing some dramatic eye make up.

Eat This, Not That To Feed Your Brain Right

Guest post

The foods you have in your pantry and fridge may be helping or hindering your brain. Dr. Christopher Calapai DO, a New York City Osteopathic Physician board certified in family and anti-aging medicine explains that the foods we choose have a lot to do with how sharp, attentive, alert, focused and happy we feel after they are consumed. Certain foods may taste great have additives in them that literally cloud our brains and leave us sluggish and dull headed. The opposite is also true. We can eat certain foods and feel a charge of mental energy and focus. We spoke to Dr. Calapai and got a quick list of foods that boost and drain the brain. Which ones will you add and remove from your shopping list?

Brain Boosting Foods to Add to your diet:

Nuts and seeds

Nuts and seeds are great sources of vitamin E. Higher levels of vitamin E correspond with less cognitive decline as you get older. Add an ounce a day of walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, flax seed, and un-hydrogenated nut butters such as peanut butter, almond butter, and tahini. Raw or roasted doesn’t matter, although if you’re on a sodium-restricted diet, buy unsalted nuts. “Adding nuts to your diet can aid in decreasing levels of enzymes that lead to protein plaques from forming and dementia. Nuts can also reduce brain inflammation, keep blood pressure low, key for preventing stroke,” explains Dr. Calapai.

Blueberries

“I eat these daily and encourage patients to add blueberries to as many things as possible. They’re great on their own, added to a shake, to oatmeal, or even to a salad,” says Dr. Calapai. Blueberries are tasty and sweet and loaded with antioxidants. They’re packed with vitamin C, K and fiber and pack high levels of gallic acid, making them especially good at protecting our brains from degeneration and stress. “Studies show that eating blueberries can boost focus and memory for up to 5 hours,” adds Dr. Calapai

Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the best brain foods out there. Thanks to its high levels of vitamin K and choline which is a B vitamin know for aiding brain development keeps memory sharp and protects the brain from later decline with age. It’s also loaded with vitamin C. Just one cup provides you with 150 percent of your recommended daily intake. Its high-fiber levels makes you feel full quickly, too. “People hear broccoli and roll their eyes thinking it’s bland a boring. Think of broccoli as a canvas ready to be painted with spices and flavors, offers Dr. Calapai. Try stir frying with a bit of olive oil, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Add in a spoonful of orange or lemon juice and it gets this nice sweetness to it.

Fish

Salmon, mackerel, tuna, and other fish are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, including docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA seems to be very important for the normal functioning of neurons in the brain. Eating more fish often means eating less red meat and other forms of protein that are high in artery-clogging saturated fats. “People who are lacking in Omega 3’s can experience mood swings and feeling edgy or negative. Omega 3’s have been know to be mood boosters in addition to enhancing focus and memory,” says Dr. Calapai.

Avocado

This creamy treat is also a rich source of the antioxidant vitamin E. Research suggests that foods rich in vitamin E—including avocado, which is also high in the antioxidant powerhouse vitamin C—are associated with a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

Brain Drainers to Drop

Partially Hydrogenated Oils

There is zero reason to ever eat foods that list “partially hydrogenated oils” in their ingredients list. It’s code for trans fats, which, in addition to upping your risk for obesity and damaging your heart health, can cause serious brain drain. “Diets high in trans fats increase beta-amyloid, peptide ‘plaque’ deposits in brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease. One study published in Neurology found that people who consumed high levels of trans fats had lower cognitive abilities and smaller brains later in life,” says Dr. Calapai. Common culprits include fried foods, baked goods, and processed foods. So bake or grill chicken instead of frying it, go for sweet potatoes instead of French fries and avoid anything wrapped in plastic that sits on a shelf for months at a time.

Added sugars

The average American eats 79 pounds of added sweeteners per year which can cause constant insulin spikes and inflammation resulting in both vascular and neuronal damage. One study published in Brain, Behavior and Immunity found that large amounts of sugar cause the hippocampus, the brain’s memory control center, to become inflamed, meaning it can’t work at 100 percent. Meanwhile, one cross-cultural analysis found that high sugar intake is linked to depression. “Sugar is a big trap because when you eat something sweet there’s a high initially. It feels good at first taste but then once it starts to be processed in the body there’s a heaviness that follows, says Dr. Calapai. If cutting out all sugars at once is too difficult, then another good way is to start using organic sugar substitutes like Stevia and Monk Fruit. This will ease the process of alienating yourself from the unhealthy sugars.

Saturated fat

A diet high in saturated fat can decrease the brain’s ability to fight the formation of Alzheimer’s-linked brain plaque. An onslaught of saturated fat also hurts your brain in the short-term. Saturated fat impairs your brain’s ability to learn and form new memories within as little as 10 minutes after chowing down. Processed meats such as bacon, pepperoni, pork sausage, or chorizo are examples of very tasty foods that are high in saturated fat. “Look we all like to indulge from time to time and that is fine, but when saturated fats are staples in your diet, then that’s going to take a toll,” advises Dr. Calapai.

Wiz Khalifa Critiicized For Letting His Son Ride the School Bus

Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Amber Rose‘s ex -fiance Rapper Wiz Khalifa caught flak this week for the oddest thing: he let their 5-year old son Sebastian ride the school bus.

Fans commented on the photo posted on Instagram this week that he should have his child driven to school because Wiz is rich.

He clapped back on a video on his Instagram story:

“All y’all people asking why I would let my son ride the but because I’m rich,” he posted on Instagram. “And he said he wanted to ride the bus with his friends, so let kids do what they want to do, Chill.”

Queens Are Born in September {My Birthday Wish List}

More people are born in September than any other month. One of those people is ME!

Today is my birthday! I put together my wish list and am publishing it here for anyone who wants to gift me something for this big day! (wink)

I’ve seen this very fun dark grey message shirt on Instagram, “Queens are Born in September” and it’s perfect. I found it on Etsy! This “Queens are Born in September” tee is 100% preshrunk cotton and I love that it comes in a v-neck because that makes it even more feminine. ($20)

I, like a lot of people, am naturally attracted to the neckline so I have always wanted to have a signature necklace I could wear everyday. A birthstone necklace is in order.

If I could get the world, I’d love this 14K White Gold Diamond and Oval Sapphire Trio Accent pendant ($425) but I’d totally settle for this much cheaper  cute Birthstone Necklace by LA Mini Jewelry Ultimate Karma Eternity Necklace ($43.20)

To match, I am digging AroshaTaglia‘s sterling silver CORAL Blue Saphhire ring ($215).

For the earth girl in me, Luxezen’s Raw blue sapphire gemstone stud earrings  ($58.75) are gorgeous and a marvelous fit! These earrings are made of unique raw stone nuggets hand paired for size, cut and color and set in gold filled, rose gold filled, or sterling silver ear posts.

Because I am a big fan of message tees, I am crushing on Bougie Girl Shop‘s I Am A September Woman shirt which also reads, “I Am Stronger Than You Believe, Braver Than You Know, Smarter Than You Think”($20) which is a very timely and relevant message for me right now in my life.

I need a nice bag to schlep all my stuff in and only Burberry‘s Nova Check  Canvas Tote ($297) will do! It is spacious and a signature piece!

I’m older and blinder today and need to upgrade my eyeglasses with my new prescriptions. A pair of Gucci 51MM Optical Glasses ($119) will do just fine!

Because I plan to start recording a series of video snippets, I need make up because an on-call Make Up Artist is not in the budget right now. I’ll take MAC Complete make up kit ($55)to hold me over until the big bucks come flowing in.

Finally, my last laptop died. I know Apple Mac Books are best but I’m still a Microsoft girl so Inspiron 14 3000 laptop will be a great replacement($229)

Colin Kaepernick Nick ‘Just Do It’ Campaign: Celebs, Customers Pick Sides

Are you boycotting Nike for selecting former quarterback Colin Kaepernick as its spokesperson for the 30th anniversary of its “Just Do It” campaign?

If so, I’d like to suggest instead of throwing away your Nike products or burning them as some of his detractors and Donald  J Trump supporters have done online, that you consider donating them to homeless Military vets! Here are organizations you can donate to:

Kaepernick, a former San Francisco 49er has not played in the NFL since 2016, the year he began to take a knee during the National Anthem as a silent protest against police brutality. Dozens of other players followed his lead, which led to heavy criticism of the NFL and many angry fans boycotting the sport entirely. Due to this controversy, Nike, which signed Kaepernick in 2011, held off in using him for ad campaigns. However, Nike kept him on their roster even after Kaepernick became a free agent in 2017.

Several celebs including our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums Chelsea Peretti and his fellow brand spokesperson Serena Williams shared their support online.

On Friday night, Kaepernick and his former 49ers teammate Eric Reid, a Pro Bowl safety who joined in the protests and also now out of the league, were each given huge ovations when they were introduced and shown on the big screen during a match between Serena and Venus Williams at the U.S. Open.

If you are team Kaep and plan to purchase Nikes in support of this campaign and to counter the 3 percentage point dip in stock price the company has suffered because of this announcement, I curated a few pieces from my partners at Shopstyle for you to pick from:

Financial Tips Every Stay-At-Home Spouse Needs to Follow

Money Tips for Stay-At-Home Spouses

Most stay-at-home spouses work more hours than the average 9-to-5 employee. Most stay-at-home mothers and fathers work at least 94 hours each week, more than double the average 40-hour workweek.

Consider that the average stay-at-home spouse’s duties include cooking, cleaning, laundry, behavior management for kids, and teaching, just to name a few. In theory, one should earn more than $100,000 a year with those skill sets.

However, stay-at-home spouses don’t get a paycheck. As a result, they feel financially powerless. They also feel down because they don’t have money to spend on themselves. Going out with friends or buying a new dress would feel like taking something out of the family budget.

Some people think that they need to justify their personal expenses. Others feel guilty about buying things for their own consumption. Here are financial tips for stay-at-home spouses.

How to Get a Credit Card

The best way to keep personal spending separate from business expenses is through a credit card. However, spouses who don’t have an income can’t get their own card because of the CARD Act US legislation. The homemaker can only get a credit card via one’s partner, as a joint cardholder or an authorized user.

When you open a joint credit card account with your spouse, both of you are responsible for the account. If you and your partner are working on your finances as a team, this is a good idea. You need to open a new joint account together to get the card, since you can’t convert an existing account into a joint one.

Keep in mind that you share responsibility in paying the balance on a joint credit card. You should use it responsibly to improve your credit. However, missing payments could hurt you and your partner. Therefore, is important to monitor the balance and payments so that you don’t make any mistakes.

Another option is to be an authorized user on your partner’s credit card. You can do this through online banking or by contacting the company’s customer service hotline. An authorized user also gets a card bearing that person’s name.

Only the principal cardholder is responsible for paying his or her bill in this case. That means late payments would affect only the credit score of the actual cardholder and not the authorized user’s credit. If the authorized user has a higher credit score, the partner would get a boost in his or her credit score.

If you manage your finances well with your spouse, sharing credit is a no-brainer. You can improve your credit score together through proper communication and trust.

Protecting 401(k) Retirement Fund

Stay-at-home spouses rely on their working partners for retirement funds. The 401(k) fund is one of the largest assets couples own. According to federal law, a married worker needs to get the signature of the spouse if he or she wants to change the beneficiary of the fund. However, the person can cash out the retirement fund if jobs are changed. The person would be able to put the funds into another retirement account with the same or a different beneficiary.

In the past, stay-at-home parents couldn’t contribute to IRAs. It wasn’t until1996 that the US tax law allowed non-working parents to contribute to investment accounts. The working spouse can open a spousal IRA as a pre-tax Roth account or a tax-deferred option.

IRAs don’t have the same requirements as 401(k) funds. Spouses don’t have the rights to IRA except for the states that have community property laws. The law has no requirement for the spouse to be named as the beneficiary.

Saving for Retirement

As a stay-at-home spouse, you might not have a paycheck, but you can still save up for your retirement by setting up an IRA in your name. The purpose of an IRA is to help people start retirement funds.

Homemakers can contribute a maximum of $5,500 a year and the contributions they make can be deducted from the gross income of the couple, if the contribution is to a Traditional IRA. However, they come with restrictions. It is important for stay-at-home moms or dads to have retirement funds in their own names.

To prepare for retirement with a single income, couples need to talk about their retirement lifestyle. They should also discuss their savings goals. It is important that both parties agree with the goal in order to improve the chances of reaching it.

Optimize Social Security

Homemakers who haven’t earned a salary for a long time would suffer when they retire because their Social Security payout will be based on their lower earnings. When it comes to divorce, couples need to be married at least ten years to get 50 percent of their former spouse’s benefits.

Filing Income Tax Returns

Homemakers who earn little or no income don’t need to file separate income tax returns. They can choose to file a joint return with their working partners, which is less costly than filing taxes separately. Filing separately causes the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to treat each person as having an individual source of income. That means that both will be taxed at higher rates, and the total will usually be greater than filing a joint return.

It is important to make sure that taxes are filed correctly, so that both partners are responsible for the figures sent to the IRS. If one person includes false information, both people may be considered cheating.

Create a Budget for the Household

It is important to create the budget for the household as a whole, with both parties having the same access to the money. It is also important to create equal savings funds so that the stay-at-home spouse doesn’t feel like a second-class citizen because of not contributing income to the family.

There really is no formula on how much to allocate for each partner, but make sure that it is fair for all. Both parties should consider anticipated needs, such as food, clothes, and other necessities. The amount allocated to each partner should be theirs to control with no questions asked.

The money allocated for the stay-at-home spouse is not called an allowance. It should be known as a personal budget or expense account. The term “allowance” would make the person feel he or she isn’t in an adult relationship, and it connotes that someone else has control over that person.

The working spouse should also discuss applying for loans with the partner. Although the former would be responsible for paying the unsecured loan, it could greatly affect the budget of the household.

Earn through Savings

The stay-at-home parent can find several ways to save, which includes using coupons. Even a little money can start a savings fund. It is hard work to reduce the overhead costs of the family. Achieving it is a great achievement. and it is only fair that some part of the savings goes into a savings account.

The stay-at-home parent is responsible for childcare and household management. Taking care of the monthly budget is vital to ensure that a single income goes a long way. Both parties should consider all the expenses and how the retirement of the working spouse would affect their lifestyle.

The 10 Items To Stock in Your Fall Maternity Wardrobe (+PLUS SIZE)

This fall, as you shop for your wardrobe for essentials to last you through the season whilst carrying a baby while pregnant or as a new mom, keep in mind some of these basic pieces.
If you start your capsule collection in your wardrobe with these key wardrobe items, you will be well on your way to establishing a foundation of basics and can go from there.

1. Black Dress – The classic black dress comes in maternity styles and is a perfect thing to wear for a variety of outings, date nights, corporate parties, concerts and more!

2. Wrap dress – A wrap dress is THE best option, especially in black, for any event. It works well in casual, after 5 or more formal occasions. Use accessories and shoes to make it appropriate.

3. Fitted Suit –  Even if you cannot find a suit tailored to your belly, a blazer that fits on the shoulders but is tapered at the waist and a matching pair of maternity slacks will do. It’s not easy to wear a traditional suit with extra belly, but it can be done.

4. White Collared Button Down Shirt  – Every woman must own a white button down collar shirt in her wardrobe. A crisp shirt is great for the office or weekend.

5. Silk Scarf – A colorful silk scarf will add the spark of flavor and style to a monochromatic or otherwise vanilla outfit.

6. Khaki pants – Khaki pants can complement a variety of tops and are casual but can still be pulled of at more formal events or venues if paired with some pears or a twin set.

7. A Tote – A staple for any woman whether she is preggers or not is a handbag tote that can fit all of her essentials and then some. These can double as a diaper bag too if necessary and are more stylish than typical diaper bags.

8. Bulky Sweater – A bulky sweater is your friend when the temperature drops and even if you are going into venues with the air conditioning still blasting. Get them in dark colors that can complement whatever you are wearing.

9. Diamond Studs – Classic studs can be dressed up or down and if you are toting around an infant, she won’t yank them out your ear as she would a pair of hoops.
