A Drug Store Pharmacist Denied a Miscarrying Woman’s Prescription On His Moral Grounds

If anyone has ever undergone a miscarriage, you know how devastating the entire ordeal can be.  It is an emotional time especially when time comes to expelling the non-viable baby from your uterus.

Fortunately for technology, women no longer have to succumb to the very invasive treatment of having an in office surgical procedure done. Nowadays, there is US Food and Drug Administration-approved medicine called Misoprostol that will do it for you.

That is the option that 35-year-old Nicole Arteaga took when her doctor offered it but when she went to her local Walgreens drug store in Peoria, Arizona last Wednesday to fill the prescription at  nine weeks pregnant, the pharmacist refused.

He cited his own moral objections, as Arteaga described in a now-viral detailed Facebook post

Arizona is one of six states that allow pharmacies or pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions on religious or moral grounds, according to the National Women’s Law Center.

“If you have gone thru a miscarriage you know the pain and emotional roller it can be,” Arteaga wrote in her post, which has been shared more than 36,000 times. “I left Walgreens in tears, ashamed and feeling humiliated by a man who knows nothing of my struggles but feels it is his right to deny medication prescribed to me by my doctor.”

She was later able to get the drug when she received notification that her  prescription was ready for pickup at another location across town.

Walgreens eventually said in a statement that Walgreens pharmacists are allowed to “step away from filling a prescription for which they have a moral objection” per the State’s law.

According to the statement, and in this situation, the pharmacist was “required to refer the prescription to another pharmacist or manager on duty to meet the patient’s needs in a timely manner.”

The Arizona State Board of Pharmacy announced Monday that it plans to investigate what happened in Arteaga’s case.

The AP reports that the board wants to look into whether the Walgreens pharmacist actually followed the Arizona law:

“Arizona is one of multiple states with a ‘conscience clause’ law that allows health care providers to refrain from assisting in abortion, abortion medication or emergency contraception. The law says medical professionals like pharmacists must state their objection in writing.”

Kam Gandhi, the executive director of the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy, told the AP that the state’s “conscience clause” law needs to be clarified.

10 Ways to Keep Baby Cool When You Have No AC

Staying cool during the summer isn’t just a desire for babies, it’s a necessity. Babies who become overheated can suffer terrible consequences, ranging from heat exhaustion to heatstroke. While babies can’t exactly tell you when they are hot, there are signs that can indicate your baby is overheating. Some signs that indicate overheating include your baby being extremely thirsty, tired, and having skin that is cool and moist.

Overheating is one of the leading causes of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) according to the National Sleep Foundation. When babies are too warm they sleep deeper, which can lead to trouble. For this reason, it’s important not to overdress your baby for sleep. When she is sleeping in her crib and there is no air conditioning in her room, putting her in a onesie or a pair of light pajamas is best. You’ll also want to have a fan running in her room to circulate the air, but make sure that the fan isn’t blowing directly on her. To cool the air that the fan is blowing you can put a pan of ice water in front of it.

A good rule of thumb is to dress your baby like you are comfortably dressed, plus one layer. If you are comfortable wearing shorts and a T-shirt then put her in that as well, plus a onesie underneath. If you’re burning up and have a pair of shorts on, leaving your baby just in her diaper may be appropriate. Try to avoid synthetic fabrics when dressing her as they tend to trap the heat and moisture in instead of allowing her skin to breathe.

If you are going to be going outside with your baby then dress her in lightweight cotton long pants, long sleeves, and a floppy hat. Keep her in the shade and preferably somewhere she can feel a breeze. It’s better to keep her skin covered than to use sunscreen on a very young infant. If you must use sunscreen, apply it conservatively and only to the areas of skin that are exposed. You’ll also want to avoid being outside between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m because the sun’s rays are the most damaging during these times.

On hot days holding your baby can cause her to become too hot. Your body is warm against hers and she can overheat from being held close to you. If you must use a baby carrier, make sure it’s a lightweight nylon or mesh one and not something heavy like denim. You want to use breathable fabrics wherever possible.

It’s also essential to keep babies hydrated when it’s hot outside. Babies sweat too, and in warmer weather you need to make sure that you are giving her plenty of fluids. Infants over six months of age can be given water to help keep them hydrated.

Water play can be a good option for those babies that are able to sit up on their own. Never leave your baby unattended during water play or a bath. Babies love to splash in the water. Taking her to a covered baby pool will also help to keep her cool. If these things are not an option, putting a cool wash cloth on your baby from time to time throughout the day will help keep her cool.

If it just seems too hot both in your home and outside and you fear that your baby is too warm it’s a good idea to go hang out in a public place with air conditioning. The library or the mall can offer convenient, cool choices.

If you feel like your baby is becoming sick from the heat, contact her healthcare provider. Heat exhaustion and heatstroke are serious conditions that warrant medical attention.

The Message Tracee Ellis Ross Has For Womb Invaders

Tracee Ellis Ross is reclaiming her fertility privacy and would appreciate if people could ‘get out of her womb’. In a recent Vanity Fair  article, the actress said that the pregnancy of her character, Bow, on the hit ABC series Black-ish triggered a lot of people to inquire about her own baby-making plans.

“Last year, I was [fictionally] pregnant all season,” Tracee told the magazine. “That brought on a lot of comments and questions and pontifications from people with no invitation…I literally have said to people, for real, no joke, ‘Why don’t you just get out of my womb? Like, get out of my uterus? What are you doing in there? And why are you asking those questions? And what makes you think you can ask that?’”

Per Essence, Ross called the unsolicited inquisitiveness by complete strangers an extension of patriarchy, which dictates women live their lives according to a certain set of rules that typically includes marriage and motherhood.

“Part of what patriarchy has created for women is this siloed-off experience, with one answer for what a good life looks like,” she said.

This isn’t the first time Ross addressed the issue of living life on her own terms. During her speech at Glamour‘s 2017 Women of the Year Summit, Ross said that while she’s built a life she’s proud of, people often tell her that she can still be a mom so her life will be meaningful.

“I have built an incredible life. I have become a woman that I am proud to be. And then someone tells me about their friend who adopted a child at 52 and how ‘it’s never too late for your life to have meaning,’ and my worth gets diminished as I am reminded that I have ‘failed’ on the marriage and carriage counts,” Ross said.

Trend: How to Rock A Fanny Pack Fashionably and Effortlessly

The Fanny pack was seen on the runways this Fashion week season.

The functional bags that keep your hands free are a throwback to the 90s but back then, they were usually vinyl and brightly colored. Called a “Fanny pack” because it is worn at the waist, right above the Fanny, the reinvented fashionable ones have more variety.

They are worn across the body, at the waist or on the hip like a holster.

Also called a “bum bag”, the bags famously made an appearance in the 2000s as seen worn by Sarah Jessica Parker’s character Carrie Bradshaw on her hit HBO show Sex and the City.

Last night, I tried out the style while attending a soca music concert and out and about in DC.

I couldn’t help but notice how freeing it was to not have to hold Anything.

At 54, Brigitte Nielsen Welcomes Her 5th Child

Brigitte Nielsen welcomed her first daughter, and fifth child, at the age of 54 on Friday. People was the first to report the news.

The actress and husband Mattia Dessi welcomed daughter Frida on Friday in Los Angeles.

Nielsen first announced her pregnancy in May in an Instagram post, captioning a photo of herself cradling her baby bump with “family getting larger.”

The Danish-Italian actress and former model married Dessi in 2006. She mentioned during a 2011 interview with The Guardian the possibility of having children with Dessi.

“I would love to because of all the things I have learned. It would be like starting all over again. But am I too old? I’m young at heart and I would be different this time around,” Nielsen explained at the time. “Mattia and I have discussed it, but I don’t know how likely it is. And to interfere with things just because I feel as if I could give more to a child then I did when I was 20 — is that too selfish? I don’t know.”

In addition to her newborn daughter, Nielsen is already the mother of Julian, 34; Killian, 28; Douglas, 25; and Raoul, 23, from previous marriages.

Burger King Russia Offers Liftime Whoppers For Getting Inpregnated By A World Cup Player

Burger King has apologized for offering a lifetime supply of Whoppers to Russian women who get pregnant by World Cup players.

Critics assailed the offer, announced on Russian social media, as sexist and demeaning.

The announcement was removed Tuesday from Burger King’s social media accounts but was still circulating among Russian social network users. It promised a reward of free burgers to women who get “the best football genes” and “ensure the success of the Russian team for generations to come.”

In a statement Wednesday to The Associated Press, Burger King said, “We are sorry about the clearly offensive promotion that the team in Russia launched online.” It said the offer “does not reflect our brand or our values and we are taking steps to ensure this type of activity does not happen again.”

Ads in Russia often play on sexist stereotypes, notably ads around sporting events like the World Cup. Women’s rights activists have been increasingly speaking out against them.

7 Tips For First Time Dads

Bellyitch rewind

You celebrated your first Father’s Day time new dads!

Congrats for making it to the daddy club. You may be exhausted, overwhelmed and still anxious. There will be a ups and downs but mainly ups.

If you’re nervous, don’t worry too much. There is only so many ways you can mess up raising a baby.  To help you feel a little better, here are some great tips for new dads from Julia Wang, head of digital content at TheBump.com.

Tips for new dads:

  1. You’ll sometimes think you made a huge mistake — It’s normal every now and then to secretly wonder why you ever had a kid in the first place. Forgive yourself these occasional moments of self-doubt and, from time to time, let yourself mourn your pre-parenthood life. These moments will be short-lived.
  2. Buy a rechargeable, cordless hand vacuum — Much of your time will be spent getting things off the floor. At first, it will be all manner of bodily fluids, but soon enough, you’re going to be dealing with everything from Cheerios to banana slices. Later, the list will grow to include things like glitter, dirt, forgotten bacon and pretty much anything that can be shredded by small hands. And the clunky upright is too annoying to drag out four times a day.
  3. It’s perfectly acceptable to make an entire dinner in the microwave. That’s it.
  4. Act like a grown-up — One of the most heartbreaking sights is that of a parent and their young child in a shouting match trying to see who can out-tantrum the other. Children are an endless source of joy, but only when they’re not being an endless source of frustration. Breathe deeply and never let yourself escalate to the level of irrational fury that your little one occasionally inhabits. A two-year-old has the right to act like a child; you do not.
  5. Hand-me-downs are more than okay — Not only are secondhand baby things easier on the wallet and the environment, it’s a lot less agonizing when you find yourself on the fourth outfit of a craptastic kind of day (which, trust me, you will).
  6. Make time for the other relationships in your life — Not only is it important for your child to know there’s more to the world than you catering to their every need, but you’re also teaching them a very important lesson about what it means to have a full, loving life. Seeing you in the role of good friend or devoted spouse is a way for your kids to learn what it means to actually be a good friend or devoted spouse.
  7. You’re not the “backup parent.” You’re a father — You’re a full, equal partner in turning a small, fragile sack of fluid and bones into a loving, decent, healthy citizen of the Universe. Never let the fact that other people aren’t sure what to do with a man between conception and Little League fool you into thinking that you’re anything less than critical to every step of the process. Be informed, aggressively involved and as in love as you’re capable of letting yourself be.

Break a leg, new dads and congrats again!
