She Picked Her Baby’s Sex in IVF then Felt Punished When Born with A Birth Defect

I love the Real Housewives series on Bravo TV though I am not always up to speed on the seasons and the newer members. I was catching up with the latest season of the Beverly Hills housewives series of the franchise when I got introduced to Teddi Jo Mellencamp Arroyave. (Yes, her dad is John Cougar Mellencamp. *swoon*)

The gorgeous blonde seems down-to-earth and has a 5-year olf daughter, Slate and 3-year old son,  Cruz, and a hunky security company owner husband Edwin Arroyave. During a couple dinner date hosted by Dorit Kemsley and her husband Paul “P.K.: Kemsley  in an early episode, Teddi and Edwin share about the guilt they endured over their son’s health following their decision to select his gender.

After getting pregnant easily the first time, they struggled the second time and turned to IVF for help. During the process, they had 12 embryos fertilized and all but one was female. Edwin wanted a boy, perhaps given they already had a daughter at the time, so they rejected the overwhelming majority of available fertilized embryos to implant the only male egg.

Their son was born with two healthy instead of three aortic chambers and as a result, may have lifelong challenges though he is quite healthy now and the prognosis seems good that he will live a good life. It started out pretty horrific.

“We had a really scary delivery with Cruz,” Teddi relayed during  the episode, explaining that Cruz wasn’t breathing when he was born. “They put him on me and one of the nurses was like, ‘He’s not okay, Code Blue.’ And I was just sitting there, and he wasn’t breathing.”

As docs rushed in to attend to their baby, Edwin immediately connected the trauma to his decision to pick the baby’s sex.

“I just remember my sisters were in the room and they’re crying. [Teddi’s] crying. I was like, ‘Holy crap,’ ” he said. “I was just praying like, ‘Lord, give me one more chance. I’ll never do this again.’ ”

He was referring to the selecting of the baby’s sex during in vitro fertilization.

“I made sure it was a boy,” he told the Kemsleys. “I kept saying, ‘I want the boy, I want the boy.’ ”

The couple sincerely expressed regret and felt they were being punished for picking their child’s gender (or sex) when they could have just been grateful for whatever God gave them. I am presuming this. Not putting words in their mouth.

“I’m his mother. My job is to protect him, and that little bit of me who felt like I was selecting something — I choose for him to be a boy, God didn’t choose for me — it’ll always make me feel a little guilty,” Teddi said.

“IVF is one of the hardest things you can go through as a woman,” she added. “One of your biggest jobs is to make babies and when you can’t, you feel sad cause you’re not able to make your baby. And you also feel sad cause you feel like you’re failing.”

You guys know I have an institutional memory and so the disclosure and exchange reminded me a bit of Toni Braxton who revealed in her book that she felt that God punished her for a previous abortion she decided to have in the middle of her then-sizzling hot career. Her son Diezel has Autism. She since went on to explain that her un-evolved notions at the time have changed, after a lot of backlash.

It is not uncommon as I, personally, know women who had fertility struggles and said they felt they too were being punished for an abortion they elected to have when younger. It is a touchy subject.

The ethics of selecting a child’s gender came into play publicly among another celebrity lately. Chrissy Teigen revealed that she felt her first child should be a girl because she wanted her husband, John Legend, to have a daughter. She also got blasted for expressing her decision.

In any event, I have no opinion on the matter other than I am happy that people are being open about these very sensitive issues beause someone out there can relate and perhaps can benefit from hearing and seeing these topics actively and candidly being aired.

Bravo! (Pun intended)

If you didn’t enroll you or your children to participate in one of the  many service activities organized around the nation, there is still time for you and the children to do something kind on their own for their neighbors or fellow man.

Here are a 6 other  suggestions besides watching a speech and reflecting on its meaning:

  1. Take garbage bags down to the town creek or some other littered area near your home and clean it up.
  2. Make sandwiches and pack fruit and a snack into about a few dozen brown bags and pass them to homeless people in the closest town or city to you.
  3. Gather old toys and bag them up to donate to Goodwill or a local family shelter.
  4. Call a local home for the elderly and ask if you can come by and play cards and/or board games with the residents.
  5. Make Homemade colorful Get Well Greetings cards to send to a local children’s hospital/
  6. Make Festive Thank You Cards to send to the local USO to ship off to military serving abroad.

Good luck and Happy MLK Day of Service!

Do you have a hand that is rough and dry? If yes, it time that you take care of your hands and make them beautiful and smooth. Going to the spa for a manicure is quite expensive. So here is a solution for you. This is an amazing manicure, which you can do easily at home and thus save money. We are talking about paraffin wax manicure and this is how it is done.

  • Heat paraffin wax in a large bowl for 10 seconds in the microwave. Make sure that the wax gets liquefied completely.
  • Let the wax cool down. As it gets cooled, apply a thick and rich cream or lotion on your hands and massage well, so that your hands are well moisturized.
  • Now check whether the wax has cooled and then dip your hands in this wax. Lift your hands from the wax and then wait for 5 seconds and then dip your hand again. Repeat this till your hands het completely covered with wax and 5 to 7 layers of the wax is made on your hand. Now you can wait as long as you wish. You may use this time to sit back and relax, watching TV or a movie, or listening to your favorite songs.
  • You should make sure that you leave wax on your hand for at least 30 minutes. This will provide you excellent results. After the stipulated time, go to the trash bin and takeoff the paraffin from your hand. After removing the wax, massage your hand again with cream or lotion. Now cover your hand with a glove. QUIZ: Are you An Extrovert, Introvert or Ambivert?

girls with masks

I am an Ambivert. I am part extrovert and part introvert. I can be loud, outgoing and can strike up a conversation with almost anyone. I also do not like networking situations when you have to introduce yourself to people you don’t know and engage with them. I prefer alone time and time to gather my thoughts, plot my day and life and figure things and people out. But I also thrive well in boisterous and loud social activity.

It’s a good balance in my opinion. And then there are those who are strict extroverts! Are you one? Take this quiz below and find out. I did and it revealed what I already know: that I am an Ambivert!

Good luck!

Pregnancy Complications You Need To Keep On your Radar

Don’t worry because the majority of pregnancies go along without a hitch. Aside from the morning sickness and constant peeing, it’s a smooth transition. Still, it’s always a good idea to be on the alert when you and your baby’s health are in question. One way to stay on top of things is to watch out for the complications which can occur. After all, not every birth is plain sailing. The following are by no means guaranteed to happen, yet it is helpful to know the signs.

Here is a quick guide to the complications to watch out for during pregnancy.

Premature Labor

On average, pregnancies should last up to 37 weeks. However, some women give birth way before the nine-month mark. It’s called an early pregnancy, and it occurs to around 12% of babies in the States. So, it isn’t an issue to worry about because it is by no means uncommon. Still, a premature labor needs addressing as soon as possible to make sure the baby is safe. The best way to tell is to time your contractions. Regular ones which occur before 37 weeks are a sign you are going to give birth.

Heart Problems

Of course, pregnancy puts a strain on a woman’s body which can affect the heart. Quite simply, one of the most vital organs in the body has to be able to pump enough blood around the body for both the mother and child. Unfortunately, some women have hearts which aren’t up to the task. Aside from high blood pressure, it can also lead to heart failure. Women who suffer from palpitations or excessive fatigue should contact their doctor ASAP. Even if you don’t exhibit the symptoms, you can ask for a simple test to be on the safe side.

Diabetes

Another cause of the pressure on the body is gestational diabetes. Because the body has to share food and water, it can often go without sufficient nutrition. When this happens, blood sugar can plummet or skyrocket depending on the circumstances. Thankfully, there are tests on hand to ensure the experts don’t miss a diagnosis. A birth injury lawyer would insist on a glucose screening between 24 and 28 weeks, and so should you. If the result is positive, it’s essential to keep your blood sugar in check by maintaining your diet and not missing a meal.

Breech Birth

Last but not least, there is a breech baby. Usually, this is when a child spins around in the womb and comes out feet first. The reason this is an issue is the umbilical cord. Sometimes, the cord can wrap around the neck and lead to complications. There is no way for a mother to tell if the baby is breech without a consultation. Babies move and kick that much that it’s impossible to tell what movement is what. If the doctor spots it before the birth, they should be able to turn the baby back to a normal position.

Hopefully, none of these will occur, but it’s still a good idea to watch out for the signs.

New Podcast: Can Science Decode Bad Teen Decisions?

A new Podcast by Audible digs into the mind of teens through interesting, sometimes haunting stories, of adolescents that fell deep in some serious pathology: one joins Isis; another commits suicide; one is a verified video game junkie; there is a criminal hacker and yet another jailed for threatening to shoot up his school.

Their journeys are relayed through the breathy narrative of veteran journalist, NPR correspondent Dina Temple-Raston and it instantly reminds me of the popular “Serial” podcasts. In “What Were You Thinking?, Temple-Raston travels to the teens’ hometown, their prison cells, their neighborhoods, interviewing their family, friends and professionals to bring you the tales of how each wound up in the predicament that had befallen upon them. The narratives are captivating and draw you in.

Each episode includes a hefty segment that examines the science behind the reasons teens would get into these precarious positions in the first place. The purpose, I believe, is to determine if neuroscience, research and data can identify correlations and origins of certain behaviors and reactions. If so, then we parents, society, educators and medical professionals may be in a better position to identify warning signs and ideally be able to help teens avoid them or cut them off at the beginning or root.

Hopefully, these lessons will be empowering so future teens will choose more wisely. I felt like I really could relate and get into the motivation of all American football playing Somali-American who, through a school project, gets sucked into the interwebs and becomes radicalized! Just like that!

The last episode is a 360 return to the origins of the Podcast which started with Temple-Raston exploring her own mindfulness with a colleague of her past. Her experience and what she learned from her discussions with that person evolved into this intriguing podcast series.

Podcasts are the next big thing because they offer entertainment, education, news and information in a very good digestible format. On any given day, I have a podcast on in the background as I work or drive around doing errands or shuttling my children to school and activities.

The success of the hit show “Serial” turned a lot of new fans onto podcasts. These days, it seems everyone and their mom are launching a podcast.

I recently shared a list of top family -friendly podcast to subscribe to and download and I was recently put on to a brand new one that Audible just launched today: “What Were You Thinking?.

Listen to the first wonderfully produced episode, “Band of Brothers” HERE!

Here is a break down of what you’ll hear in the series:

BAND OF BROTHERS Abdullahi Yusuf went from winning Minnesotan high-school football player to ISIS recruit in less than a year. He opens up publicly for the first time on how his search for identity ended up in radicalization. Plus, leading scientists explore why Abdullahi’s brain may have been hard-wired to make these decisions.

BEING WORTHY Ryan Green explains how the thrill of hacking and being considered “elite” prompted him to hijack 77,000 computers at once. And a look into how the adolescent brain’s hunger for the “feel good” chemical, dopamine, drives young people to push boundaries and take risks.

AFTER RILEY Seemingly happy high-schooler Riley Winters, killed herself at age 15. It was one of many suicides in Colorado Springs that year, a sharp increase that showed no signs of slowing. In this episode, we travel to Riley’s hometown to talk to friends and family, and find that suicide is more complicated than depression.

VIRTUALLY ADDICTED Hear the private thoughts of Felix Graham, a British teen struggling to redefine himself after quitting the internet games he spent countless hours playing. Plus, we travel to South Korea where the government is providing programs and feedback to young people who are over dependent on smartphones and internet gaming. And finally, we hear from neuroscientists about how neuroplasticity may make adolescents susceptible to addiction, but also more likely to be able to rewire.

YOU’RE NOT ALONE Dillon Cossey felt isolated and alone… until he turned to the internet to connect with other victims of bullying which led to him poring over sites about school shootings. Not long after, he was arrested. In this episode, we see how chronic bullying can change the adolescent brain and, along with other significant factors, can lead to violence. Also, we hear from Sue Klebold, mother of one of the Columbine High School shooters.

IT ISN’T SPIRITUALITY, IT’S NEUROSCIENCE We visit programs that help adolescents make better choices, including a Moroccan morchidat center that helps counter Islamist radicalization and a NYC high-school teacher focused on “mindful fitness.” Finally, we go deeper into the science of the adolescent brain and the role white matter plays in its evolution
