Senator Tammy Duckworth Will Be First US Senator To Give Birth in Office

Senator Tammy Duckworth, first female amputee elected to Congress and the first Asian American to represent her state of Illinois is about to have another first: the first sitting Senator to welcome a baby.

The 49-year old Thailand-born retired US Army Lieutenant released the news in a recent statement which read, “Bryan and I are thrilled that our family is getting a little bit bigger, and Abigail is ecstatic to welcome her baby sister home this spring.”

Duckworth  lost both of her legs in the Iraq War when her helicopter was shot down. The accident also made her first female amputee of that War.

It’s an extraordinary piece of news given her history with infertility. She conceived her first child, daughter, Abigail, with her husband  Bryan Bowlsbey via IVF and suffered a miscarriage while on the campaign trail on the road to the Senate.

She opened up about her fertility problems admitting, “I’ve had multiple IVF cycles and a miscarriage trying to conceive again. She went on to speak of her commitment to her country and as a mother, “As tough as it’s been to juggle motherhood and the demands of being in the House and now the Senate, it’s made me more committed to doing this job.”

Congrats!!

Despite Record Flu Deaths Among Kids, Parents Are Still Skipping Family Flu Shot

At least 30 children across the country  have died of the flu during a particularly dangerous season which has left a spike of cases among  older people and children being hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Though the flu season typically peaks in February, the outbreak is already one of the worst on record, as the flu has touched every U.S. state, with 32 states reporting severe flu activity.

We get the shot because I have had family members who didn’t get inoculated from common illnesses actually die after contracting them.

So my family doesn’t  mess around and accept any risks even when one of contract the flu anyway.

A Facebook friend of mine recently polled her wide and expansive followers and friends querying whether they or their children get the flu shot.

I was amazed that the overwhelming majority, close to 90 percent, of her respondents said no to both.

No no judgment here but still I was amazed by the number of families who, for varying reasons I’m sure, decide against it.

The American Journal of Infection Control study, designed to shed light on why influenza vaccines are not more widely used, enrolled 131 of 140 eligible patients (9 months to 18 years of age) who were tested for influenza in a single, small suburban pediatric practice during the 2012-13 influenza season. Parents completed a written questionnaire asking about previous history of influenza, vaccination at other facilities, reasons for not vaccinating, and intention to vaccinate next year.

In this study, influenza vaccines were accepted less frequently than the hepatitis A vaccine, despite the fact that hepatitis A is a relatively low risk disease compared to influenza. The study also looked at the effect of birth dates on vaccination, noting that parents of children whose birthdays fell outside of the favorable vaccination season (August 1 — December 15) may forget to come back to the doctor to get their children immunized. The author says that larger studies may find this to be of greater significance.

“The first and most common reason could encompass a belief that risk for contracting influenza is low in their family as well as that the vaccine offers little protection,” explains study author Scott Field, MD, of the University of Alabama Schrool of Medicine. “A reason rarely discussed in the medical literature relating to why many parents do not think influenza vaccines are needed is the infrequency with which many individuals and families experience influenza first hand.” Most influenza positive patients (59 percent) and controls (89 percent) in the study had no prior influenza history, and those with previous influenza had significantly more risk of being positive.”

Interesting, no!?

8 Habits Most Wealthy Practice and Pass to Their Children

There is a saying that money is the root of all evil and in our culture, there is an emphasis of valuing quality of life over the accumulation of wealth.

It is understandable and lofty to be a good person but the fact of the matter is that money can help alleviate some stresses related to increasing one’s quality of life and I don’t think we should begrudge those who strive to become rich during their lifetime.

If you are not wealthy and you might want to become so, you certainly can and should consider adopting some of the habits of the most wealthy people.

Also, you might want to fall out of the bad habits exhibited by those who are not setting up their future generations for a more comfortable existence.

Thomas Corley did an exhaustive study from 2004 to 2007 , trying to uncover the underlying differences between the wealthy and the poor, then he spent another 16 months analyzing and summarizing all the data he acquired from his extensive interviews.

The people in the wealthy group had an annual gross income greater than $160,000 and $3.2 million in net assets. The individuals in the poor group had an annual gross income of less than $35,000 and $5,000 in liquid assets.

He uncovered eight core habits of the rich and wealthy which blueprint for accumulating wealth and success.

I love the fact that the list includes habits for children. Here is list as summarized by blog millionaire Brandon Gaille:

#1 Listen to Audiobooks or Podcasts During Your Commute

Thomas Corley’s study found that 63% of the wealthy did this and only 5% of the poor did this.

#2 Live Within Your Means

  • No More than 25% on Housing – The house is typically the one area that families stretch way to far on. They tend to look at their total income and ask, “can we afford it?” The correct way to identify your housing budget is to look at your after tax yearly income, and then multiply that by .25. That number is your budget for your mortgage, home insurance, and property taxes.
  • No More than 15% on Food – Eating out at restaurants can easily get out of control. The best practice is to limit eating out at restaurants to once a week, and never order alcoholic beverages during a meal. Just a couple of drinks will double your bill.
  • No More than 5% on Auto Loans – The car is another area where people tend to overspend. The more expensive your car is, the higher the bills will be for maintaining your car from year to year. If you want a nicer car, then consider buying a low mileage used car that has been on the road for two years.
  • Contribute maximum percentage to retirement that the IRS allows –

#3 Maintain a To-Do List

81% of rich maintain a to-do list compared to 9% of poor doing the same.

#4 Take Care of Your Body

76% of the wealthy exercise aerobically 4 days a week, compared with 23% of poor doing the same.

#5 Limit Your Television Time to Less than 1 Hour Per Day

65% of the wealthy watch less than an hour of television each day. Only 22% of the poor practice the same habit. When it comes to reality television this statistic shows an even larger gap. 77% of the poor watch reality television, and only 4% of the rich indulge in this time consuming habit.

#6 Teach Good Success Habits to Your Children

Here are a few stats on how the wealthy and poor raise their children…

  • 74% of the rich teach good success habits to children, while only 1% of the poor did the same.
  • 70% of the wealthy make their children volunteer 10+hours a month, compared with only 3% of the poor.
  • 63% of the rich encourage children to read 2+ non-fiction books per month, and a mere 3% of the poor followed suit.
  • #7 Set Goals the Right Way

67% of wealthy people write down their goals. Only 17% of the poor do the same.

  • #8 Never, Never, Never Give Up

In Corley’s study, it was apparent that all of the people that were classified as wealthy never stopped pursuing their goals. The poor had the bad habit of always stopping short before they made it.

8 Core Habits of the Rich and Wealthy

SAG Awards Red Carpet, Winners

We are still in the era of #MeToo and #TimesUp when it comes to outing sexual harassment, assault and disparity in Hollywood and it too center stage again at the 24th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards at The Shrine Auditorium on January 21, 2018 in Los Angeles, California.

Our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Kristen Bell was the first host (of any gender) of the annual show.

Also, women made all the presentations of awards during the event.

Unlike during the Golden Globes, we saw a lot of color on the red carpet. Attendees showed their solidarity to the movements with lapel pins and speeches.

Along with Bell, other celeb moms featured on the blog attended including Kate Hudson, Halle Berry, Maya Rudolph, Giuliana Rancic, Nicole Kidman, Laura Linney, Reese Witherspoon and Allison Janney. The latter four were nominated for awards with Janney and Kidman walking away with the top honors for their respective categories.

So I See Chrissy Teigen is Following Our Pregnancy Advice

We consistently share a blog post about three things to never share with others about your baby in the oven until it is born, and I recently saw an interview with Chrissy Teigen sharing that she has adopted two of our core pieces of advice! (Well she didn’t give us credit for the advice, but that is besides the point! ha!)

During an interview with E! News during a media tour to discuss her Lip Sync Battle series the Twitter maven gave some insights on her other latest project: a brand new baby with husband John Legend.

Last go round, the model openly announced that she selected her baby’s gender because she felt her husband deserved a baby girl and she got lambasted for it in by the public in social media, mainly. This time, John asked her to keep it mum about the baby’s sex which they knew because they conceived it using in vitro fertilization.

“We had them on ice,” Chrissy joked. “So we know. We knew when we put it in, but John was like, ‘Make sure you don’t say it. Let’s have one thing for us,’ and of course I’m probably going to end up saying it, but I’m just going to do this favor to him for as long as I can.”

Good advice!

“Names are tough. What I learned was, never share your ideas,” she explained. “If you have a name idea, somebody is going to be like ‘No, I knew a person by that name in high school, and they were gross.’ That always happens.”

Yes, chile! This was also among our suggested no-no’s before baby is born!

The other is that you’re pregnant. Read why HERE!

Winter Activities To Keep Your Kids Sane While Confined to Indoors

The winter months can be challenging for kids. Their energy level doesn’t go down just because the roads are covered in snow or because the temperatures dip below freezing. Whatever the weather, kids still need the opportunity to get outside and take in some fresh air, release stored up energy and engage their minds and bodies through active play. Here are some ways to help your kids from going stir crazy during the winter months.

Bundle up and enjoy your favorite activities. Cold temperatures and snowy roads don’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy the great outdoors. Sure, it takes a lot more time and effort to get ready to go outside, but it’s worth it. Once you get putting on the snowsuit, boots, hats and gloves down to a routine, you’ll practically whiz right through it. And when you’re all bundled up and outdoors, kids can enjoy many of the same things they do in other seasons. You can go for a walk, play on the swings, run around the backyard or hit the slide. You can enjoy being together and being active, even when the thermometer dips.

Get back to basic outdoor fun. There’s no beating basic winter fun like sledding down a favorite hill, building a snowman complete with carrot nose and button eyes, having a snowball fight with siblings or neighborhood friends or ice skating on the local frozen pond. This is the stuff childhood memories are made of. Instead of watching from the sidelines, be an active part of the memory making. Jump on the sled for your own ride down the hill. It’s just as fun as an adult as it was as a child.

Create new winter games. There’s no end to the creative ways you can have fun outside during the winter months. Make colored icicles, paint in the snow with colored water, add fun shapes to the iced sensory table or set up a snowball target game. You can create a fun, engaging outdoor environment that your kids will enjoy and learn from. Get kids involved in developing new, fun things to do outside. Kids have amazing imaginations, and with a few simple household supplies they’ll create games and play spaces that will keep them occupied for long stretches of time.

Take advantage of local indoor play spaces. Many community centers offer indoor play spaces during the winter months. These spaces usually offer a free play area where kids can run, jump, twirl and bounce. Tumbling mats and cushioned climbing squares allow kids to release their pent up energy in a safe environment. Indoor spaces also offer riding toys like tricycles, scooters and kid sized cars. Some even provide kid sized props like stop signs, gas pumps and police stations; encouraging kids to create their own cities and towns. This type of imaginary play can keep your child busy for hours on end.

Head to the pool. It’s seems like an odd time to go swimming, but the winter months are the perfect time to enroll your child in lessons or reinforce his current swimming skills. It’s a perfect way to get some exercise into his weekly schedule and it’s lots of fun to boot. When summer rolls around, he won’t be spending his time learning to swim or getting reacquainted with the water. He’ll be ready to enjoy the local pool, lake or beach.

Find a local playgroup. If you have to be inside, it’s always more fun with friends. Connect with other parents or caregivers in your area through online sites or local parenting groups. Some groups have a multiple age make-up, which is a great fit if you have more than one child. Other groups focus on one age range, which is perfect if you have one child or are looking for a social outlet for a particular child. These weekly groups give your child a fun activity to look forward to and they provide you with social connections, resources and support.

Do some of the things you don’t have time for in the busy summer months. When the weather’s nice, chances are you’re too busy to take on some of the projects your kids would like to do. Wintertime is your chance to catch up. Spend an afternoon baking cookies for the local fire department. Pull out all the arts and crafts supplies and create new art pieces for your child’s bedroom wall. Long, dark afternoons can be the perfect excuse for tackling those put off projects.

Winter doesn’t have to be a dreary season. By planning some fun activities for you and your child, you can enjoy all the winter months have to offer.

These Internet Famous Twins Are Probably More Known Than Most Other Celeb Twins

The most famous celebrity twins may not be The Carters‘ (Rumi and Sir), Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s Max and Emme, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon’s Moroccan and Monroe, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s Knox and Vivienne’s, Julia Roberts’ Hazel and Finn or Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick’s Tabitha and Marion.

That’s because those sets of twins are kept private by their celebrity parents. They are rarely in the public eye and therefore, not likely recognizable to many, unlike each of their very famous parents!

That is not the case for this set of twins who are growing up in the public eye, in social media and  Youtube.

The 5-year old McClure Twins, Ava and Alexis McClure of East Orange, New Jersey girls have their own YouTube channel with close to 800,000 followers and over 60 Million views and an Instagram account with 1.3 Million followers.

The gorgeous pair’s parents are Nigeria-born Aminat (“Ami” for short) and Spanish-speaking Irish ancestry dad Justin (who also speaks Spanish fluently). Justin is a videographer and photographer and together with Ami, they  produce, edit and manage the twins’ Instagram, Youtube,  Facebook channel which boasts over 336,000 followers and their website.

Dad and Mom McClure also sell boutique dresses the girls have modeled in during New York Fashion Week and have appeared on Good Morning America and other national shows.

Their infant brother Jersey Tayo McClure is barely 2 months old and already has over 32,000 followers on his Instagram! Wow! What an Internet Famous family!

We previously blogged about a 6-year old who earned several million dollars last year reviewing toys. So with this type of success, it is no wonder that over 40 per cent of moms aged 18 to 34 in the United States created social media accounts for their baby before the child’s first birthday.

Another 7 percent made one before the kid’s second birthday. Majority however are battling with the thought in the first place.

Maybe it is a new media thing. Maybe a millennial thing. Whatever it is, it is quite fascinating!

Study: Expectant Mother are Addicted to Pregnancy Tests

Motherhood can be stressful – and for some mums, this stress kicks in as soon as the word positive appears on an at-home pregnancy test.

According to new research carried out by ChannelMum, women are getting hooked on pregnancy tests after receiving positive pregnancy results from at home kits.

While it is understandable to want to double check the results – after all, most kits come with two tests – women are actually taking an average of six different ones to ensure they really are expecting, according to ChannelMum
