Princess Charlotte and Prince George Are Bilingual Thanks To Their Spanish Nanny

Princess Charlotte started her first day of nursery school last week and she charmed the pants off of audiences that peeped the adorable photos her mom Duchess Catherine took of her the morning of.

The photos were taken right before she made the 5 minute walk to Willcocks Nursery School from the Cambridge’s London home. William and Kate released a statement along with the photos.  Big brother Prince George started primary school at Thomas’s Battersea in September, a £20K-a-year family-run establishment situated in an old grammar school in Wandsworth.

Apparently, the young princess, like her brother, already speaks two languages, so she will be ahead of the other students who attend for the price of £3,000  per school term.

According to the Metro UK, Princess Charlotte has been practicing with her Palencia-born nanny, Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo. A source is reported to have told People magazine the young Princess has learned several Spanish phrases and is ‘very sweet and very confident — she’s always chatting away’. The source also described her as ‘so polite, but also fun and energetic,’ adding, ‘She has beautiful manners.’

Charlotte was styling as well in the first day of school photo in a double-breasted burgundy Razorbill style coat by Amaia Kids Mary Janed with hard sole in maroon by Spanish designers Doña Carmen,  and a soft cashmere scarf by Marie Chantel which offers a collection of luxury children’s merchandise. It was founded by Princess Marie-Chantal, wife of  Crown Prince Pavlos, the eldest son of King Constantine II of Greece.

Serena Williams’ Post-Delivery Trauma: Lessons for Future Moms

Oh My! Serena Williams candid and public recent reveal of her post-birthing experience in a recent Vogue magazine cover story shows why it is important to know your body, your medical history and be your own advocate.

In the feature article , the 23-time Grand Slam Tennis champ and first-time mom relayed her experience of having to coach the medical staff at the hospital she delivered her daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian, Jr. .

From Miami Herald reporting:

The next day, Williams, who has a history of blood clots, felt short of breath.

The tennis star, 36, informed docs that she thought she was having another pulmonary embolism, a blockage in an artery of the lung.

The doctor soon performed an ultrasound on her legs, which revealed nothing.

At her insistence, Serena was soon sent for a CT scan, which did reveal several blood clots in her lungs. As she had predicted, they put her on a heparin (anticoagulant) drip.

“I was like, listen to Dr. Williams!” the Palm Beach Gardens resident told the fashion mag.

That wasn’t enough.

Soon after the clot drama, her C-section wound popped open from coughing from the pulmonary embolism. In surgery, doctors found that a hematoma, a pooling of blood outside of a blood vessel, had flooded her abdomen (the blood thinner caused the hemorrhaging).

A filter was inserted into a major vein, in order to prevent more clots from traveling to her lungs.

She was home a week later and stayed in bed her “first six weeks of motherhood.”

The lesson here: stick to your guns and insist if you feel off or if something is not right. Don’t be afraid to speak up or to empower your spouse, partner or a close family member to demand answers and appropriate care when you think you need it. Good for Williams for sticking to her guns and knowing herself and her body.

Williams later in the Vogue piece relayed having the Baby Blues and fluctuating emotions. She looks stunning on the cover in a crimson Versace dress. Jennifer Meyer earrings. Eva Fehren bracelet.

Editor’s note: I am traumatized for her and am amazed she even made an attempt to return to championship tournament tennis so soon after welcoming baby. She is a true champion!

Birth Tourism is In the News Again, Not the Chinese but Russians This Time

A few years ago, we reported about how the United States federal agents raided over three dozen “maternity hotels” in Southern California that housed foreign women, mainly rich Chinese, who came to America solely to give birth to a US citizen baby.

In 2012, about 10,000 Chinese women gave birth in the US which more than doubles the 4,200 who gave birth in 2008, CNN reported citing Chinese state media.

And interestingly enough, in the current climate where Russia is at the center of several investigations and scandals, there are new reports out about how birth tourism is booming in Miami, Florida in two parts, Russian Riviera and Little Moscow.

According to an article in The Daily Beast published last fall, numerous companies are offering bundle packages that include housing and medical services for the Russian parents-to-be to use while they are in America to have their babies and they are reportedly explicitly referencing Trump hotels to draw rich Russians who can afford it. The most expensive package costs $84,700 for “a Trump Tower II apartment with a gold-tiled bathtub and chauffeured Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes Benz.”

Traditionally, such activity is associated with Hispanic American women and men from Mexico and south of the border nations who cross the border without authorization, settle in America and have children who provide ample opportunity to remaining in the United States. Some anti-illegal immigration advocates have previously used the derogatory term “anchor babies” to apply to such children.

In the California raids example, companies used social media to advertise the scheme promising to house women in these hotels and some apartment complexes in Los Angeles, Orange and San Bernardino counties. The women paid between $15,000 and $50,000 for housing, transport food, but not necessarily medical care, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement said in a report.

Court papers indicate that bank statements for one maternity tourism company showed monthly gross receipts of $213,968.79 and annual income of $1,283,812.74.

This current scenario with Russians and Chinese are certainly outside of that previous aspersion, but to some would arguably equally apply. Arguably, one can empathize with parents who are simply looking for better opportunity for their children and families.

However, the argument can be made they should not be able to freely exploit the laws of the United States to jump ahead of legal immigrants waiting for visas or to get government aid especially when their families wouldn’t have paid taxes up until the children grow up and get a job to support such aid.

The Chinese families are wary of the pollution and food shortages in China and they believe a US Passport could be a ticket for the family out of China in the future. The children would get access to good education and other benefits and can later petition for their entire family to emigrate to America when the baby turns 21.

Presumably, the same can be said for the Russians. However, travelers to the US from impoverished countries, especially, are usually denied a visitor’s visa if they are visibly pregnant. The reasoning is that the mom-to-be will take advantage of resources in America for free and exploit the visa laws to guarantee US citizenship for their baby, something that is illegal.

However, the California hotels that targeted the Chinese are routinely raided for this illegal activity. Time will tell if the current administrationwill apply the same approach to raiding the ones targeting Russians now that it has become such a big news story.

Watch this Celebrity Yoga Instructor’s Creative Bump Progression Video

I’ve seen a lot of pregnancy progression videos but yoga instructor Heidi Kristoffer for Shape Magazine is quite creative. In it, she goes through a series and from one pose to the next, she is seen advancing, getting rounder and rounder.

Words above her head provide information about the size of her fetus and what stage she is in. The final image is of holding her baby.

“It’s really important to stay strong and flexible for delivery and also for postpartum,” Kristoffer shares. “The more you move while you’re pregnant, the easier your body goes back to its shape after pregnancy.”

Summer Camp Slots Are Filling UP Already: 10 Alternatives

Even though Summer Camp slots have already started filling up, there are plenty alternatives out there for parents to consider.

Can you believe it is already time to start scoping for and signing up your little ones for summer camps already? Yup! By the middle of February, most of the best and most popular camps are already filled and only taking children for the wait list.

Here is a website that attempts to curate all the camps nationwide for you to peruse: www.summercamps.com. Get on it, parents!

If you are thinking of alternatives, and or if you are on a tight budget and camp may be out of the question this year, there are plenty of alternatives for you to consider.

Here are 10 we posted previously, shared again for your convenience:

1.Volunteer Programs – Older children can learn a sense of civic responsibility and the importance of helping others by spending part of their summer participating in a local volunteer program. Animal lovers among the smaller set may be thrilled with the idea of helping at a local animal shelter, while others may enjoy working with a local charity or visiting a local retirement community.

2.Community Day Camps – Community centers in most cities offer summer day camp programs, allowing kids to enjoy all of the fun activities that are a part of a sleep-away camp without the stress of spending weeks away from the familiarity of home.

3.Religious Summer Programs – Many places of worship offer vacation workshops and other similar programs with a theme of religious instruction during summertime, which may be an ideal choice for devout families. Kids can spend the summer among peers who share their spirituality, learning about their family’s belief system through arts and crafts, story time, and other kid-friendly activities.

4.Arts Workshops – Many art museums offer programs specifically tailored to budding art aficionados; local universities may also host summer programs for children staffed by students with education or arts majors. University programs may include visual art, musical instruction, or theater programs, depending upon your area.

5.Sports Clinics – Pint-sized athletes are sure to love spending the summer honing their skills, which makes a local sports clinic the ideal choice. These programs keep kids physically active, which is a huge plus for parents who are concerned about the sedentary lifestyle that many children adopt when school ends. Rather than spending hours in front of the television or the computer, kids who participate in a sports clinic can enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and exercise while becoming stronger and more skilled athletes.

6.Academic Programs – During summer vacation many school systems still offer programs for academically gifted children. Some programs even focus on peer-tutoring, allowing more advanced students to offer assistance to classmates who struggle in some areas, which can build a sense of social consciousness. Alternatively, many programs feature an emphasis on building and expanding gifted kids’ already-impressive knowledge base.

7.Scouting – While the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America do have summer camps for their troop members scattered across the country, plenty of troops stay home during summer vacation to participate in locally-based scouting activities. School vacations provide active scouts with the opportunity to earn merit badges and other achievements, which can be difficult to do during the hectic school year.

8.Family Day Trips – Families can spend their summer vacation taking a series of fun and exciting day trips. Visiting the zoo, the park, or a children’s center during the dog days of summer are surefire cures for the boredom and inertia that often sets in around mid-July.

9.Visiting Extended Family – Today’s families tend to be more spread out than in previous generations, so kids might not get to spend as much time with members of their extended family as they would like. While spending a few weeks at summer camp might be daunting for some kids, visiting a favorite family member during summer vacation might not be as stressful.

10.Family Camping Trips – Skipping a sleep-away summer camp doesn’t mean that kids have to forgo the camping experience altogether; outdoorsy families can plan a camping trip that keeps everyone together and costs far less than sleep-away camp fees.

Get These Stylish Trainers for Your Newly Walking Toddler

When your infant goes from a crawler to a toddler, the immediate next milestone is walking!!!

Awww! They grow so fast. Did you know that allowing them to walk bare feet is the best tor their training.

Of course, it is not always practical and at some point, baby will need to leave the house. Doh!

When he does, you will want to make sure he is wearing a shoe that is comfortable, made of quality materials and if possible, is built to enhance or encourage development.

I recently received a complimentary pair one such shoe line, of Mooshu Trainers walking shoes that are specifically designed to support and encourage the proper heel to toe gait of new walkers. (Caveat: All opinions are mine and are independent of the fact they were provided at no cost)

Each product in this parents-owned shoe company is stylish and comes with a squeaker installed.

The audible squeak sets a reminder to baby to encourage proper form.

My god daughter and niece tried out and she became a champion in her Piper Fringe Boots in no time flat.

She wore them to a basketball game and after a while, her mom reported baby’s dad was a little annoyed with the squeaking but not too much to give up on them. Also, knowing that they are aiding with her walking made the sacrifice worth it to him.

They cost a reasonable $38 each which works as a price point in my opinion considering the dual functionally of the shoe.

The girls shoes in the line also come with a removable bow that can be worn.

These well-designed shoes also have very flexible soles and are made with supple and soft materials that bend with each step.

They are comfy, cute, super adorbs and are quite gentle on growing feet!

They got a grade A with our blog reviewer and her family. Baby girl looked quite stylish in them and we can attest to the fact that she indeed started to walk even better than before after wearing the trainers regularly!

Great shoes!! Thumbs up!

Judge Orders Kelis and Nas to Avoid Making Their Son Famous in Social Media

·

Chef, Cookbook author and singer Kelis and her ex-fiance rapper Nas  have reached a custody and visitation arrangement over their 8 year old son, Knight.

According to TMZ, a judge stepped in to preside over Nas’ complaint that the “Milkshake” singer made it difficult for him to see his child. Kelis has since welcomed a second son, Shepherd, with a partner she has never disclosed publicly.

TMZ reports:

According to court docs, the exes hammered out specific dates where Nas will have custody of Knight for weekends. Dad gets four full weekends over January, February and March. Nas’ weekend visits will begin immediately after school on Fridays … thru Sunday night, or Monday night, if it’s a 3-day weekend.

Another interesting part of the judge’s order: Try to limit exposing their son and ”popularizing” him in social media!

Ok.

We get it tho. There have been quite a few social media custody battles play themselves out in social media, most notably Ciara and Future over their son Future Zahir and Eva Marcille and Kevin McCall over their daughter, Marley Rae.

Ciara’s husband NFL quarterback Russell Wilson faced backlash last year for wishing his wife a Happy Mother’s Day on behalf of him and “our kids”.  Future fans saw it as a slap in the face to his step son’s dad.

McCall reportedly disowned Marley when Marcille posted an Instagram photo of Marley with her fiancé attorney Michael Sterling.

Nas rarely, if ever, posts photos of his son in social media and Kelis does so sparingly and never shows either of her children’s faces when she does. In fact, it looks like around the same time of the judge’s orders, she posted the above photo of herself with Knight on Instagram recently, with his cap over his face.

“Just exploring the world with my little ones by my side,” she captioned the colorful photo on a yacht or boat.

The timing to the proximity of the order is uncanny.

Speaking of which, Kelis has a mad dope Instagram feed! You should follow her if you are a fan of travel, color, music and culture!

We See You Target, Flossing With New Weekend Trends Under $40

I am always on the look out for new fashion trends. I was in my local Target store the other day when I noticed one of its new signature collection that is being featured is A New Day. It is a women’s brand that is meant to be mixed and matched, and Goodfellow & Co., a menswear brand that provides modern takes on clothing and accessories, are currently, according to InStyle magazine’s summation of the brand’s aesthetic.

I love it! And the bonus is that all the pieces — well the ones I like anyway– are under $40! Woot!

It has on trend new weekend pieces like this Embroidered Military Jacket which sells for $34.99 at my Target store. Similar pieces can be found online for less.

Statement Sleeves are big this season and they include shirts with big billowy cuffs. Not part of the New Day line but I was digging on this top from ribbed choker neck pullover with flounce sleeve from JohnPaulRichard for Target that is on sale for $14.95.

Yellow is one of my go-to colors. This mustard colored pleated skirt by A New Day is super cute. I love this one sold by ChicWish for $37.43 as well.

The pleated midi skirt in a bright yellow caught my eye. It’s going for $24.99.

I was also digging its over sized Herringbone Boyfriend blazer which added a touch of sophistication when worn atop the pleated skirt. It sells for $34.99.

So much style and sophistication! I love it! Make your way down to your local Target store today to check out the pieces or click any of the links on this page to order online if there isn’t one near you.

4 Women Who Came Back From Pregnancy to Take Tennis Grand Slam Titles

The naysayers who think pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood signal the end of a fantastic phenomenal sportswomen’s career are wrong. Very wrong.

In fact, a lot of women report the challenge of momhood drives them to try even harder and to best their game, as Tennis.com‘s Ed McGrogan correctly analyzed about Serena Williams‘ likelihood of making a comeback.

“Whether Serena would consider continuing to play as a “challenge,” or something she simply wants to do as a mother, it’s far easier for me to picture her playing again, rather than the alternative,” McGrogan writes.

She would not be the first as several women have done similar — gone from giving birth to go on to beat the field and rise back to the top and earn a Grand Slam title.

The legendary Margaret Court , the pre-Open era woman who has won the most majors, 24, won three majors after giving birth to her son in 1972.

Williams, who has the most since 1968 when professional players were allowed to compete with amateurs, the s0-called Open Era, is chasing Court’s record. With one more Grand Slam Title, she will tie it and with two more she will surpass it. If Williams follows Court’s lead, she will break the record, albeit now is a time when the field of competition is even tougher than ever before.

Kim Clijsters won three of her 4 Grand Slams after the birth of her child.

Lindsay Davenport won 3 of her 55 Career titles after giving birth to her son.

An Olympic Gold medalist and seven times Grand slam winner, in 1914, Dorothea Lambert Chambers became the first mother to win a Grand Slam crown.

There are at least two other major female players to make mommy comebacks and silence all the critics and naysayers!

Too soon, ma, too soon!
