No ‘The Internet’ Isn’t Really Mad at Kim Kardashian-West for Dressing As Aaliyah

I just read that a few people on the internet are upset that Kim Kardashian-West dressed for Halloween as late 90s R&B pop singer Aaliyah in her “Try Again” music video. The two prevailing criticism are: Kim is culturally appropriating because Aaliyah was African American and others say she shouldn’t impersonate a dead person; and Kim shouldn’t impersonate a recently deceased pop icon.

I ball BS on both!

First, Halloween is all about dressing up and wearing costumes. I think by now, most people know not to wear a culture as a costume or risk offending members from said culture. In my book, this prohibition applies to anyone dressing from anyone from the following cultural heritage while not having said heritage him/herself: Native Americans, Aboriginal and Indigenous people from other parts of the world other than America, Mexicans, Africans, and Asians.

It is obvious that anyone and everyone from any race all over the world are free to dress as anyone form European ancestry with expectation of offending many people.  Ergo Scottish bagpipers, German Beer Maids, Irish Farmers, French Maids or French Mimes are okay.

It seems hypocritical, yes, but I think the reason it isn’t the same is because people and leaders from these regions of the world, Europe and Australia,  have managed to travel far and wide proclaiming dominion over others and spreading their culture, beauty ideals, religions and traditions globally via Imperialism and Colonialism. And they’ve done so so thoroughly that the effects are long lasting and engrained that they sort of already belong to all of us.

It may not make sense but that’s just the way it is.

My daughter, who is black like me, dressed as Joan of Arc, a white French woman, for Halloween and I doubt anyone will be accusing her of cultural appropriation.

Now back to Kim.  The Keeping Up with The Kardahsians star and KKW Beauty purveyor  did not paint her skin or wear make up to appear darker which a lot of foolish people who actually were guilty of cultural appropriation have done in the past not realizing or perhaps aloof to the historical significance of White people painting their skin of someone from another race.

Kim wore her own skin and we have long applauded those who have dressed as people from other races through clothing while skipping the skin-darkening or yellowing, in terms of Asian-themed costumes.

Second, re: that criticism hat she was impersonating someone who has passed away. Um…every year, there are thousands of people who go as dead folks like Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Marilyn Monroe (which she did dress as while her sister Kourtney Kardashian dressed as a very dead Sonny Bono), Prince, Michael Jackson.

Someone else said well the dead person is more recently dead. Last time I checked, Prince and Michael Jackson died after Aaliyah.

Finally, I think it’s not really a big deal among most people on the internet— just a few opinionated people whose tweets got picked up by national news organizations and couched into an article.

This is SJW (social justice warriorism) at its best.  Faux outrage like this one dilutes instances of true cultural appropriation.

Also, I think a few tweets by some angry folks which are the minority of online opinions doesn’t equal “the Internet”. I  have seen so many articles declaring why the Internet is mad at Kim. Puhlease.

It really is not that deep but it does may a great headline and clickable piece so, I dig it. (ha!)

Viral: Target-Themed Birthday Parties

While 3-year old Pennsylvania pre-schooler Charlie Kern‘s Target-themed home birthday party went viral last week, it turns out she isn’t the first but it is a cute rare trendy theme.

Charlie’s mom, Emily,  said she balked at first when her daughter asked for a Target-themed birthday party.

“After a while, I started to think, ‘It’s different — let’s do Target,’ and at that point, it was official,” Emily Kern told TODAY show.

Emily decorated the front of their home like a Target store front. She made the cake and decorated the table with Target themed cupcakes and decorations and served PizzaHut Pizza and popcorn, the food sold at Target’s cafe.

For take away goody bags, there were actual Target bags Emily picked up from a local store and  guests got to fill their bags with items from a makeshift Dollar Spot in the backyard.

Kern filled each bin with things like toys, candy and bubbles, and was given authentic Target bags and stickers by her local store.

A couple of years ago, a 12-year old special needs boy named Fletcher had a Target party.

Also, in NYC, the mom of then  7-year old Parker Cook of Syracuse, New York was able to convince her local Target to host a party in the cafe.

The kids played scavenger hunt thru the store, decorated their own makeshift Target employee bags and got a dedicated cashier to checkout their goodies.

“Parker has loved Target since before he could talk, so naturally a Target party was necessary,” Parker’s mom Kara told Syracuse.com.

I even spotted a blogger use a Target-themed invitation.

New Study Blames Older Celeb Moms For Fueling Misconceptions About Fertility Later in Life

We’ve discussed this before, how celebrity women over 40 who have babies but do not disclose their fertility journey contribute to a common misconception among older average women. A lot who want to start a family but have been putting it off because of their career, not yet ready or not in a committed monogamous relationship or marriage see these older celebs popping out kids and assume it will be easy for them too.

A new piece in the Sun laments on how celebs that have children later in life to get pregnant are fueling misconceptions about the chances of becoming pregnant later in life.

The piece points out recent work by researchers at New York University  who found that more than half of celebrity pregnancies and births mentioned in the likes of Cosmopolitan, People Magazine and US Weekly were over the age of 35.

The findings were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) congress in Texas.

ASRM president Dr Richard Paulson said: “A reluctance to show challenges is misinformation and can affect decisions.”

While Mariah Carey, Nicole Kidman and others have been quite open, some like Janet Jackson and Halle Berry who had pregnancies in their very late 40s have not.

A February Time.com article addressed how older women should be more open about their fertility.

“The likelihood of a healthy live birth without fertility treatments at age 50 is less than one in a million,” Eve Feinberg writes. “There are limits, however, to what technology can accomplish. IVF cannot completely overcome age related infertility. To date, the oldest woman to be successful with IVF using her own current eggs is 46 years old. Women who conceive with IVF beyond age 46 are either using their own eggs that were frozen at a younger age or, more likely, donor eggs.

Donor eggs are a game changer: the success is tied to the age of the age of the woman donating the egg, not the age of the woman who receives the egg. The average woman donating eggs is under 30 and national success rates are upwards of 50 percent per attempt.”

The research blames the media that reports on pregnancies of older celeb moms for not balancing their coverage with information about fertility.

Present company excluded, of course, right? (smile)

We have a running tally of over 40 celebs who gave birth over 40, but this blog frequently posts articles, news pieces and opinion features warning about the dangers of relying on celebrities to guide your family planning decisions and choices and about the challenges of getting pregnant starting in the 30s.

My 5-Minute MakeUp Application Tips for Moms On The Go

make up in a rush

Whether you’re expecting, a new mom or a veteran mom, there are many times when you may find yourself without time to put on make up, but need to look fresh. First impressions are important and so you want to put your best face forward all the time. I have friends who feel naked without make up and take over an hour to apply makeup before any outing.

Many of us hurried moms, however, don’t necessarily have all that time. I love professional make up for special outings but it isn’t always financially feasible and most times, I have 15 to 20 minutes to get myself together before heading out.

Here is my secret to a natural look in about 5 minutes tops.

jj ghatt bellyitchblog.com

First, apply a gloss in a light pink, nude or other natural soft tone. If you’re heading to an evening event, you can go with a darker hue like plum or crimson.

Next, add liquid eye liner to the bottom of your upper lid and a light stroke for the under lid, but not too much because you don’t want to look too vampy. You want just enough to bring out your eyes. Liquid is better in a pinch because you don’t have to fret if your eye pencil isn’t sharpened.

I recently figured out that light blush can make anyone look cheery and fresh-faced. To figure out where to apply blush, make a big smile big and brush  the apple of your cheeks. Just a touch.

Put on a couple layers of mascara for upper and lower lashes. Add a shimmery gold eye shadow to your lids.  Then finish off with a light dusting of bronzer to set the look. If you have portable make up set spray, you can fix the look with a few pumps so it can last longer without needing a touch up.

And you’re good!  If you don’t have these make up products, I’ve curated a collection below or use them as an inspiration or for reference when you head to your make up counter or drug store.

Good luck moms — xoxo JJ, Bellyitch editor-in-chief

Reported Preggers Khloe Kardashian Sticks With Black Color Palette

Even though Khloe Kardashian has not announced her reported pregnancy with her and her NBA boyfriend Tristan Thompson’s first child together, she is still being “Bumpwatched” quite heavily!

Reports say the Good American apparel company co-founder and reality Tv star is 5-months pregnant with a baby boy.

There has been no confirmation of such news but we do see Kardashian sticking to all black which is very concealing and wearing comfy baggy clothing which could lead a sleuth to suspect she is hiding a Bump.

Kardashian visited the Good American’s pop-up store last week.

The Keeping Up With The Kardashian star wore a baggy sweatshirt dress from her collection on Thursday and a light top, blue jeans and a full-length tan wool jacket on the Friday.

She stopped in to promote the line’s collaboration with Macy’s on Good Morning America also last week and outfitted herself all black then too!

Then again, all the girl wears is black anyway, preggers or not ! Ha!

She is a host of her own TV fitness game show Revenge Body with Khloe Kardashian on E!

I can totally tell that she is not interested in the media circus that followed her sister Kim Kardashian-West during her two pregnancies hence the super down low moves. Ditto with half sister Kylie Jenner, I think!

Here Are the Secrets to Raising a A Polite Child

You are at a restaurant seated with your child and you witness the most polite and well behaved child on the planet at the next table.  He sits still, waits until his mom is finished talking and asks for what he wants by saying “may I please have ….”  You wonder how this child, who looks about the same age as yours, is not fidgeting in his chair, screaming and demanding he gets his mac and cheese NOW.  What has that parent done right and why do you feel like you have done it all wrong?

Give yourself a break.  If you love your child, want what is best for him, work hard to see that he is well cared for and strive to spend time with him, you are a fantastic parent.  Just breathe and realize that there will be ups and downs, but that the end result is what you are working for, not this moment in time when your child is going nuts.  This will pass and you will survive it.

Try not to compare your child’s behaviors to others children. That other child is most likely not always as calm and polite as he appears now.  It is very possible that just 10 minutes earlier he was screaming just as loud as yours.  Children develop the ability to control behaviors at their own pace.  One child might have no problem sitting still in his chair, but be unable to wait his turn, while another child might be fully willing to share and take turns without issue, but seems to be unable to sit still.  Comparing your child with other children is never a good idea.

Don’t let your frustration with bad manners come from other people’s judgment. You might find yourself frustrated with your child most often when he does not use the words “please” and “thank you” in public.  This frustration usually stems from your sense that other people are watching and judging you.   Perhaps you then utter the phrase “what do you say” or “you know better than that” in order to show others around you that you ARE teaching manners to your child.  You are probably less concerned about courtesy in your own home when no one is around.  It is when you get in the spotlight of the public eye that those concerns over P’s and Q’s surface.  So, work to ignore those seemly prying eyes and realize that your child is doing the best he can at that moment.  Don’t feel like a bad parent because your child is having a rough time.  Love him and move on.

Model good manners for him.  The number one way that a child learns manners is though the example others set for him.  Children are little mirrors.  When you find your child exhibiting a behavior that frustrates you, more frequently than not it is a behavior you have exhibited first.  This is not always the case, because children can pick things up from other adults or children in their lives or even from TV, but it is commonly the case.  So take a good look at the way you talk to your child.  Do you ALWAYS use polite manners when talking with him?  Do you ALWAYS say please, thank you and your welcome and use polite tones when asking for things?  Or do you only say it every now and then in public?  If you use these phrases only spastically, your child is getting mixed signals about their use.  He will see your inconsistency and use as a sign that these words only need to be used when he REALLY wants something.

DON’T demand that he use the words “Please” and “Thank you.”  Demanding the use of these words does not help your child understand what they mean, why he should use them or even help him want to use them more.  It only creates a power struggle between you and your child.  As stated before, the tactic to demand their use by questioning “what do you say” is most frequently used in public to demonstrate to others you are teaching good manners.  Even when the requirement of their use is performed in private moments, it is with the hopes that the child will use them in public.  The truth is that it is not necessary for your child to say these particular words every time he asks for something.  The more important value is to make requests in a manner that is respectful.   Focusing on the tone of voice is usually more significant.  To help remind a child of polite words and manners, parents can talk to the child of generosity when someone gives him something.  “That was so thoughtful of Grandma to give you that bear.”  This will help the child really understand what it means to be thankful for something.  When the child wants something and asks with a less than polite way, telling him “I like to be asked with kind words” will help him understand how to ask with courtesy.

Praise him when he does use polite manners.  As with any habit you are trying to help your child build, catching the positive moments is the most effective teaching tool.  Find the moments when he does what you are hoping he would and then praise him for those actions.  “I really liked the way you asked your dad for that blanket.”  Even simply saying “you are very welcome” when he says thank you can help reinforce the concept.

There is not a right or wrong way to teach a child to be polite.  It is a lifelong process that will have its ups and downs.  Being polite often has more to do with the child’s mood than anything else, and will become more consistent with time.

Our Faves from the Tequila Casamigos Halloween Party

Amal Clooney hosted a party by husband George Clooney’s tequila company along with their business partner celeb couple Cindy Crawford and Randy Gerber who throws the annual Tequila Casamigos Halloween Party.

Each year, the event is attended by an A-list of celebrities.

The 1970s/Studio 54-themed event featured several other of our fave celeb mamas we’ve “bumpwatched” in the past including: Kim Kardashian-West with one of her BFFs Jonathan Cheban dresses as Sonny and Cher.

Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio was there showing off her unbelievable 6-pack abs! Wowz. Molly Sims and Rachel Zoe attended wearing Mettalic gold 70s-inspired outfits.

The event was held at  the Old Tower Records spot in Los Angeles, California.

“[We] serve a lot of Casamigos and everyone just kind of lets loose and has a great time,” Gerber  told Entertainment Tonight‘s Lauren Zima of how he pulls in the biggest crowd in Hollywood, year after year. “It’s really the one time everyone gets to let loose and play dress up, and pretty much everyone is friends. It’s all part of the House of Friends…. Everyone looks forward to that one night of the year.”
