Your Baby’s First Year: Month by Month

Are you wondering what changes and developments your newborn baby will undergo during their very first year of life? Here’s a complete guide to everything you should expect at each month.

1 Month

In the first month of a baby’s life, you might notice that they have some changes to their skin. Their skin might go quite red or look fairly spotty. But don’t’ worry about these as they are to be expected; they should go away on their own if you leave them. Once your baby is two weeks old, they might go through some excessive crying fits. Normally, these are nothing to worry about, and your baby will grow out of this phase. However, if it is very difficult to soothe your newborn, it could be a sign of colic. If this is the case, take your baby to your doctor for a checkup.

2 Months

You might notice your baby’s very first smile once they reach the two-month mark. It’s at this age that infants start to recognize faces as well, so expect a lot of cooing and smiling when she sees you and other relatives! Some babies might even start to bear weight on their legs when they are held upright, though this is something that you shouldn’t try and rush.

3 Months

Once they hit three-months old, babies will be able to stay awake for longer periods. But that doesn’t mean that they can go without their afternoon nap! Now is also the time to prevent cradle cap as it often appears for the first time around three or four months. If you have been breastfeeding your newborn until now, you should try and introduce some formula milk to their diet now as this will give you a chance to take some time off to relax.

4 Months

Parents who have been struggling with the lack of sleep can start to see a light at the end of the tunnel at four months as this is when most babies start to sleep through the whole night. You should start to introduce some tummy time to your child now as they will be strong enough to push up onto their arms when placed on their front. As they aren’t fully mobile yet, they won’t be able to move out of this position, but giving them a chance to use their arms this way can help to strengthen their muscles.

5 Months

Now that he or she is five-months old, your baby will understand object permanence. This is the understanding that objects still exist even when we can’t see them. So, now is a great time to start playing peek-a-boo with them and challenging them to try and find objects, such as their favorite teddy bear. They will find this endlessly entertaining!Unfortunately, it’s not just fun and games at the five-month mark as this is when some health conditions, including food allergies and eczema, can start to raise their heads. You should also keep an eye out for some of the early signs of teething as they might begin around about now.

6 Months

Your baby is now half a year old! And they will now start to develop their very own personality. Plus, six-month olds are usually filled with confidence, and they will try to wave and smile at everyone who they see, even random passersby in the street! Your little one will start to get a bit more mobile right now and will want to find out about items by putting them in its mouth. So, it’s important that you keep a good eye on them so that they don’t eat anything that they shouldn’t!

7 Months

Once your child reaches seven-months old, they will need to be in a very tight routine. Babies love routines as it gives them some control and they always know what to expect next. You will find that if you ever break from your usual routine, you young child could get very cranky and annoyed. Now is also the time to start baby-proofing your house, especially in the kitchen area. Seven-month olds will be trying to explore as much as possible, so it’s important that there is nothing lying around the house that could hurt them. You might also notice that your baby starts to get a lot hungrier throughout the day. This is perfectly natural and not something that you should be worried about. It’s a good idea to introduce some mid-morning and afternoon snacks to help support their diet.

8 Months

Remember the good old days when you could place your baby down on the floor and they just stayed there? Well, those days are, unfortunately, long gone! Your baby will now be able to roll, crawl, and scoot along the floor, usually a lot quicker than you might expect! However, you shouldn’t worry if your baby can’t crawl yet. As long as they have reached other important milestones, then there shouldn’t be anything to worry about when it comes to their development. They might just be lazy! You should also notice that the baby’s language skills start to improve, even though he or she won’t be able to say any real words yet. But there will be plenty of baby words and they will soon be saying their first ‘mama’ and ‘dada’!

9 Months

Even though your baby won’t be able to speak just yet, at eight-months old you will start to notice some speech patterns. They might stick to the same baby words and noises while you talk to them. It’s about this time when babies start to experiment with facial expressions, and you might notice that your infant tries to mimic you. Trust me, this can be hilarious! One of the worst things about nine-months old, though, is that they might start to turn into very fussy eaters.

10 Months

We’re in double digits now! Did you notice that your baby became a bit pickier with their food at nine months? Well, don’t expect this to get any easier. In fact, most children become a lot more stubborn with their food once they hit ten months. You might also see an increase in their appetite as well, but this isn’t something that you should be worried about. Your baby will have probably learnt to point by now, so you should expect to be asked to get them certain items a lot more often through gestures. Some ten-month olds develop a sense of adventure and start to try to climb. Make sure you always watch them as they normally try to climb up before they have mastered the art of climbing back down!

11 Months

Your newborn baby isn’t so much of a newborn now. In fact, it’s almost their very first birthday! Your baby should now be able to grasp onto items and hold themselves up with a little help. If your child hasn’t already taken their first steps, they should do so this month. So, it’s a good idea to always keep the video camera on hand to catch this precious moment on film! Babies also start to recognize pictures and images, so they become more interested in picture books. It’s also a good idea to make sure that your baby is active every day so that they don’t pile on any excess pounds.

Don’t forget that these milestones are just averages, and there usually isn’t anything to worry about if your child is late reaching them. If you are super worried, though, take them to the doctor.

US Govt Slows Pregnant Undocumented Teen’s Abortion Request

The US  federal government has stopped a 17-year old undocumented Central American girl being held in Texas from getting an abortion.

While being held in an immigration holding shelter  the girl, known as Jane Doe to protect her privacy, sought to abort her 15-week pregnancy.

But  the Department of Health and Human Services officials who oversee the custody of unaccompanied minors have tried everything they can to stop this teenager from getting one.

Lawyers at the American Civil Liberties Union took up her case arguing that she was forced to undergo an ultrasound for no medical purpose and then required to undergo counseling to dissuade her from terminating her pregnancy.

The teen’s mom was called over her objections and officials disclosed the pregnancy.

The ACLU won an order Wednesday from a U.S. District Court judge instructing the department to let her have the abortion, but the federal government filed and won for an emergency stay. After a Friday morning hearing the government won an order requisite  the girl to undergo counseling for additional weeks.

After the time lapses, she will beyond 20 weeks and there is a ban in Texas on abortions after then.

Celebrity Era Baby Shower Theme Trend: ‘Southern Charm’s Cameron Eubanks 60s Baby Shower

Fellow cast members of Bravo TV reality show Southern Charm threw co-star Cameran Eubanks a 1960s-themed baby shower earlier this month. It is reminiscent to me of Serena Williams 1950s baby shower. Trend alert, maybe?

Everyone came dressed like the socialites famed photographer Slim Aarons used to snap on the height of his career.

Eubanks shared a photo of the crew along with a very graphic baby shower cake ordered by Whitney Sudler-Smith who planned the event with Patricia Altschul.

“I wanted a Slim Aarons elegant return to the 60’s for @camwimberly1 baby shower…. I had nothing to do with ordering this cake ….NOTHING!!” Altschul wrote on Instagram along with a pic of the group including Shep Rose decked out in the period clothing at the event some compliments of resort wear designer Lilly Pulitzer.

Halloween Trick or Treat Tips To Follow This Year

If you will be taking your little ones out Trick-or-Treating this afternoon and evening, we here at Bellyitch urge you to take safety precautions ahead of time. Here are some last-minute things to keep in mind compliments of the Pediatric Care network:

Halloween Safety Tips for Children:

  • Pin your child’s name, address and phone number to the inside of his or her costume in case you get separated.
  • Make sure older children are trick or treating in groups and that your child has a cell phone to call you if they get separated.
  • Only approach houses with porch lights on.
  • Never let them enter a house while trick or treating
  • Only eat candy from sealed packages–no homemade treats.

Halloween Safety Tips for Teens:

  • Make sure you know where the party is, who will be there and how you can reach them. Call the host parents to verify that adults will be supervising.
  • Talk to them about personal safety. Don’t accept food or drinks from anyone they don’t trust and to never leave their drink unattended.
  • Girls should never leave a party alone, always have someone escort them to their car.
  • Never get into a car with someone who has been drinking.
  • Above all, make it clear they can always call you–no matter what the situation–and that you will come to get them.

be safe!!

Serena Williams to Defend Australian Open Title As Baby Girl Cheers Her On

Serena Williams has announced that she plans to defend her Australian Open championship title in 2018.

In the meantime, she and fiancé Alexis Ohanian have been showing off photos of their 7-week old adorable daughter, Alexis Ohanian Jr. on Instagram.

“Say what,” the proud parents captioned an adorable chubby cheeked photo on Jr’s page.

The new dad also Instagrammed an image toting their tot.

“Mon petit chou,” he wrote.

Williams also recently surveyed her fans on IG stories asking them to share what they got as push presents.

Williams confirmed during a recent press event that she will play the Jan. 15-28 competition to defend her title at the Australian Open.

It should be expected.

During the TED 2017 Conference in Vancouver, Williams earlier this year, she told Gayle King, “I definitely plan on coming back. I’m not done yet. If [my sister Venus Williams is] still playing, I know I can play. This is just a new part of my life. My baby’s going to be in the stands and hopefully cheering for me.”

yay!! Can’t wait! Mamas do it too!

4 Ways What You Eat Can Help You Get a Better Night’s Sleep

Black woman sleeping in bed

By Dr. Bill Miller

Who has not had a restless night’s sleep? Everyone does on occasion, but for many, it is an increasingly frequent experience. The typical explanation is the unparalleled distractions of our modern lifestyle. We email compulsively, text our friends at all hours, and binge watch TV. Consequently, our sleep suffers. Studies show that the average amount of sleep that Americans currently get has fallen by between one and two hours each night over the last 60 years. Furthermore, the quality of that sleep has deteriorated. Some research even suggests that our irregular sleep patterns have led to a ‘dream’ deficit that also takes its own individual toll over time.

The crux of the issue is that there are significant health problems associated with sleep disorders that go beyond feeling tired the next day. Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with higher incidences of heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and cancer. Many of us realize this and struggle to make adjustments. We experiment with changing our caffeine or alcohol intake or, in desperation, some turn to sleeping pills.

Most of us know from experience that there is some kind of link between our food intake and our sleep patterns. Sleep can be difficult if we are too full or extremely hungry. Yet, our busy lifestyle and the temptations of snack foods continuously get in the way. One thing is clear. A good evening meal with sensible portions improves the prospect of a restful night of sleep.

We have long known that there are two fundamental states of sleep and each is regulated by a different part of the brain. Both are necessary for completely recuperative sleep. We have a sleep cycle, called our ‘circadian rhythm,’ which is regulated by our brain and by metabolic cues governed by liver cells. All of these signals work together in a continuous feedback loop which is commonly called our ‘circadian clock’.  New information adds a significant to factor to that mix. Our gut microbiome has a surprisingly crucial influence on our circadian sleep-wake cycle and our sleep quality. Experiments confirm that when specific microbes in our gut are altered, our fundamental states of sleep are disrupted. This limits our ability to recover from stress and is necessary to protect against neurological diseases such as dementia. To assist in that recovery process, we now understand that our gut microbiome and our own cells form an active feedback loop and our sleep patterns are part of it.

This continuous feedback between our gut and brain significantly modulates our responses to stress. When that feedback is suboptimal, it begins a cycle that leads towards metabolic health disorders such as diabetes. Our sleep-wake cycle is part of this loop. Impaired sleep disrupts our metabolism and contributes to inflammatory states and metabolic diseases, which can, in turn, further disrupt our sleep. When our gut microbiome is off-balance our capacity to achieve restorative sleep is profoundly affected.

Here are four tips to start you on the path to a great night’s sleep:

  • Our microbes have internal clocks, just as we do. We are at our best when we find our optimal personal method of synchronizing and adjusting to each other. In effect, if you feed your microbes well, they will treat you right.
  • Stick to a firm eating schedule and limit fat content. Both of these factors can improve sleep quality. There is an added benefit. These measures help with weight management, which is also mediated by the gut microbiome.
  •  Keep calories the same, but make your meals smaller and more frequent. Studies show that this improves sleep quality and metabolic parameters such as blood glucose or serum lipid levels.
  • Try adding either prebiotics or probiotics to your diet. These offer your microbial partners the nutrients they need.

When you plan to get a good night’s sleep, you need to think of it as putting your microbes to bed. Feeding them properly is your best chance for normal recuperative sleep in the midst of our hectic modern lives.

‘The Cromarties’ Reality TV Show To Debut on USA

Ok! I must say The Cromarties new family reality TV show looks interesting and very relatable!

The show will premiere on the USA TV Network on November 9th as a “comedic half-hour docu-series that follows former NFL all-star Antonio Cromartie and his wife Terricka, as they take on the everyday challenges of raising a blended family of five (soon to be six) kids,” per the show description on its website.

“For the first time in 11 years since being drafted into the NFL, Antonio is a full-time stay-at-home dad,” it continues. “Terricka loves having Antonio home to help raise their kids, but his intense competitiveness and football-coach parenting style may prove to be too much for the whole house. Antonio and Terricka know that there isn’t a playbook for parenting, and we’ll join them as they make their own rules while navigating the field together.”

They welcomed their 6th child, daughter Jhett Paxton this past September tho the show includes their adventures when Terricka was still expecting.

“I think I’m going to stop here at six,” Terricka says while cradling her bump in a new promo video recently released. (Check it below).

I love that they have special terms for the family starting with the first four letters of their last name like “theCrosnest” to describe home base and “Cro-CD” to refer to Antonio’s mild OCD and obsession with cleaning.

He is a cook and the one to get up early with the kids according to the promo reel and I can appreciate that as I have a husband who is very hands on too.

In addition to the twins, they share a son, 3-year old son Jagger and daughter, 5-year old Jurzie. And Terricka has a daughter named Jordynn

Sounds like they have a wonderful blended family and partnership. Check your local listings for channel and time Info! And I think USA is a great fit bc it is home to one of my other fave family reality TV shows,  Chrissley Knows Best.

Let’s Talk About Why Your Hair Falls Out While Pregnant

Being a new mom can be one of the most emotionally rewarding — and challenging — experiences a woman faces. And while you may have anticipated your body to go through a whirlwind of changes, you may not have expected your hair to start falling out in clumps.

Also referred to as postpartum hair loss, telogen gravidarum, and telogen effluvium, excessive hair shedding after childbirth (which would occur anywhere between two and four months after giving birth) can affect between 40 and 50 percent of women, according to statistics from the American Pregnancy Association.

“When a woman is pregnant, she has a lot of extra hormones in the body, including estrogen,” says Christine Carlan Greves, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist in Orlando, Florida. “The estrogen helps protect us from losing our hair. Then when she has the baby, there’s a sudden change in the hormone levels, including a drop in the estrogen. And this shift can cause a response in the body that may affect the hair cycle.”

Inside Rapper Drake’s Baby Nursery (PHOTOS)

Although Toronto rapper Drake denied that a   fling with model and former porn star Sophie Brussaux resulted in a pregnancy, a paternity test later, and there are reports out that he has set up a neutral Hermes-themed infant nursery and playroom in the multi-million dollar mansion he has been building in his home town.

Over the weekend, October’s Very Own took his followers on an MTV Cribs like tour of the digs. What caught people’s eye were the stops along the way that featured a pretty swanky gender neutral playroom.

Meanwhile, Brussaux has been enjoying her pregnancy and getting showered by family and friends recently. Oh and it’s a baby boy!

The baby should be here by now because she posted on September 19 that it was three weeks to due date so….

Ok so about 3 weeks away from delivery date ???, my body has expanded beyond anything I could imagine, see the before and after ?… 35lbs extra and counting ??‍?. But I managed to dodge stretch marks thanks to a great homemade belly balm recipe given on a French aromatherapy website (@aromazone_officiel pour ceux qui connaissent), and it's way more efficient than any of these expensive creams you can buy that are full of water (which makes them cheaper to make). You need oily substances to prevent the skin from cracking. I wrote the recipe in English (3rd picture), but you'll have to convert the millimeters and grams into something you understand lol. Also drink a lot of water, and pray your genetics don't betray you…but my mom had crazy stretch marks and I don't have one yet ??. Rub at least twice a day from the beginning of the pregnancy but especially at the end. I hope it helps a few of you as much as it helped me ?

April The Giraffe is Cleared For Another Pregnancy Amidst PETA Opposition

April The Giraffe, who took the Internet by storm earlier this year with the live streaming of the delivery of her baby calf Tajiri, has been cleared for another pregnancy but the news isn’t welcome to everyone.

Last week, Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y. posted a photo of  Tajiri’s parents April and Oliver as part of the announcement of the news to its fans on Facebook.

That post has since garnered over 53,000 reactions on Facebook and has been shared more than 10,000 times, as of Monday morning. However, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA and a vocal critic of animal mistreatment, responded negatively to the news.

In a statement, Brittany Peett, PETA Foundation director of Captive Animal Law Enforcement, lambasted the park, accusing it of having “wrung every dollar and video hit that it could out of this giraffe’s pregnancy.” The statement also called on the park to “prioritize animal welfare over fleeting online fame and end its shameful giraffe-breeding program.”

Jordan Patch, the Park’s owner, responded to the accusation by touting the benefits of the live stream to elevating their educational platform and enhancing giraffe conservation.

“We didn’t ask for viewership, we didn’t promote the giraffe cam, and we certainly didn’t plan on a worldwide phenomenon. However, we received it,” Patch told USA Today. “We used the platform and audience to educate on giraffe conservation, dwindling populations and habitat destruction. We’ve been able to couple that message with the donation of tens of thousands of dollars to support the conservation efforts in Africa. We’ve made a difference, tangible change, with our efforts.”

Money raised through a naming contest for the park’s giraffe calf, born April 15, was donated in part to giraffe conservation, in addition to funding the park’s annual Ava’s Little Heroes fundraiser, which supports local families with a child fighting a health battle.

“At the end of the day, we all want what is best for animals,” Patch said. “While PETA fights the small battles, attacking efforts like ours, Animal Adventure and other facilities are taking on the war that is giraffe conservation.”
