Yes even You Preginistas Can Rock the Off-the-shoulder Trend

off-the-shoulder
You wouldn’t think that the off-the-shoulder trend that’s hot this Spring would be pregnant lady appropriate but it definitely is!

Think about the cut in most tops with that fashion flare. They’re typically made of light material. Perfect because you get over heated a lot and you’re not about that sweating like a pig life.

And off-the-shoulder tops are typically A-line and have an empire waist Cut meaning no pressure on your achy boobs that are preparing for breast feeding.

The only concern may be the naked shoulder thing if that’s a concern. Otherwise, don’t be shy about being trendy too and picking up an off-the-shoulder too or dress soon!

My New Obsession: WRAPS (10 Min Recipe Inside)

wraps_spicy-tuna

These days, I am totally in love with wraps! They’re super easy to make and you can combine fresh ingredients, meats, lettuce and other veggies, add some sort of sauce or savory sauce and you’re in business.

I also love the fact that wraps can be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. I make a scrambled egg wrap for the kids. It’s a nice alternative to cereal and oatmeal. It’s wholesome and more filling; brain food for the day until lunch.

For lunch, my fave is a tuna wrap service with chips and for dinner, you can have a wrap with savory soup. A tortilla wrap or smaller soft taco wrap can be used and they are usually lower in calories compared to traditional bread.

The tuna tortilla wrap (seen above)  is easiest to make! This creamy tuna salad flecked with bell pepper and shredded cheddar cheese is wrapped inside tortillas with lettuce recipe takes just 10 minutes and can feed a family of 4.

wrap

Ingredients:

1 can (12 ox)can Chicken of the Sea® Solid White Albacore Tuna in Water

1/2 cup chopped celery

1/4 cup of mayonaise

1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese

4 flour tortillas (12 inch)

8 large lettuce leaves

Directions:

Mix tuna, celery, mayo, red pepper and cheese.

Spread tortillas evenly with the tuna mixture.

Top each with 2 lettuce leaves; roll up.

Voila! Super Easy. You can dice up the rolls into smaller pieces for small kids. Enjoy!

Crayola To Retire A Color from The 24-Box For First Time

crayons-1933053_1280

This Friday, the Crayola crayon company will retire another one of the crayons. It will announce which one this Friday in Times Square at 8:15 a.m. on National Crayon Day.

While it has retired colors before, starting in 1990 ( maize, lemon yellow, blue gray, raw umber, green blue, orange red, orange yellow and violet blue), but this is the first time it will retire a color from its classic 24-count box, the company said.

This color will join the “Crayola Hall of Fame” with the other colors that were given the boot!

But once the color is retired, the Forks Township,Pennsylvania-based company will not produce any more crayons in that shade. Only boxes that already contain that specific color will remain.

Current colors in the 24 box are: red, yellow, blue, brown, orange, green, violet, black, carnation pink, yellow orange, blue green, red violet, red orange, yellow green, blue violet, white, violet red, dandelion, cerulean, apricot, scarlet, green yellow, indigo and gray.

The last time Crayola got rid of colors was in 2003, when blizzard blue, magic mint, teal blue and mulberry disappeared from the collection.

Burnt sienna avoided getting cut after more than 60,000 fans voted in the campaign to “save the shade.”

Good. We love burnt sienna. So sad that maize went. That was a fave of mine a child.

Crayola will be livestreaming the Friday announcement on Facebook. To join in, head to the Facebook event.

The best guess is cerulean because who can pronounce that word anyway? (ha!)

A Road Map To Help Your Kid Grow To Become A Creative Thinker

girl3picnoi

A few years ago, a Vice Principal at the Catholic School my children used to attend shared his experience teaching at a summer youth program in an inner city school compared to one in a pretty affluent suburb in the same state.

On the first day, during a short break, the counselors instructed the children that they’d have an hour to rotate on different play stations but something interesting happened then.

In the city program, without prompting, after being told to play, the kids there scattered, grabbed balls and sidewalk chalk, formed teams on their own for playing tag and snatched up limited supply of jump ropes and hoola hoops before the last could be swooped up.

But on the other side of town, with the perfectly manicured lawns, white picket fences and two car garages, where organized recreational league sports, ballet and karate lessons and carpools instead of bus rides  are norm,  no one moved.

The children stood around waiting.

The concept of just scampering off to figure out something to do was not the norm.  After a few minutes of stillness, it occurred to the staff that the kids were waiting for more instructions.  It’s what they’re used to. The counselors divided up the children into groups and assigned them play stations and groups.

I found that unplanned social experiment fascinating, but sad at the same time because my kids would be in the camp with the little robots waiting for instructions.

Lately, from the reports that come out and just general observation of Zen Y and Z, it appears that we may be losing the war between intellectualism and ‘keep it simple’ because, well, it’s just easier to be told what to do and to follow instructions than to come up with something to do on your own.

Independent thinking isn’t necessarily rewarded in a ‘teach to test’ environment where there is little time for traveling off the curriculum and exploring the fields and getting lost in the weeds.

A lot of us adults aren’t too unsimilar to Generation Zers.  We are content following social trends, our favorite singer or entertainer on social media, and we chime in to comments on popular topics and generally, agree with conventional thought.  We want to be liked, and being agreeable is an easy way to accomplish that goal.

teen

In high school, it’s easier to go along with the clique and hang on the words of the leader of the pack.

I imagine that it has always been the case for each generation. Succumbing to social pressure to fit in is innate to humans at any stage of life, even.

In schools, children are taught to read, perform mathematic equations, memorize history material in a school book and to cobble paragraphs together based on Wikipedia or online facts and turn in reports.

There is insufficient devotion in the curriculum to teach critical and analytical thinking.  There are electives for that, I guess. So it goes, children who are naturally talented with words and who have a sincere and deep interest in literature, the arts or physical sciences, will likely do okay.

But everyone else will just settle. I wish we didn’t have to settle.

In my home, I have three children: two who are creative, thoughtful, introflective and responsive to others. They can quickly analyze new situations and promptly adjust. They are great with words, creatively write or draw every day.

My other kid is not as motivated  and a bit scattered, and doesn’t really focus as much  and would prefer to not have to do extra thinking or intellectual activity, outside of reading sci fi series, on his days off.

I know I shouldn’t compare my kids but I want this other kid to be better at dissection a problem or challenge presented to him and come up with a creative solution or to plan that challenges conventional thought, wisdom or trends

Critical and independent thinking skills are crucial, not just for term papers in college but for life, in general.

I think it is essential to be able, for example, to judge a political candidate by comparing  his or her campaign rhetoric from their voting pattern, to be able to read between the lines and understand subtext, covert actions and words and figure out if someone is being disingenuous. There are usual social and word clues that give it away if you’re attentive. But there is so much non-real human face to face interactoins these days, that the skill of interpersonal communication is really lost on many among today’s youth.

It’s not too late. I’m convinced!

My kid and all of the children soon will be in charge, running companies and the government and we cannot afford to shrug it off as just something that’s changed.

I wanted to come up with three concrete things that parents can do to encourage and nurture critical thinking in their children and I came up with one and asked my two creative ones to give me an idea on how to cultivate free thought and broader perspective in children.

kids-tim-gouw

Idea 1: Encourage Role Play, and often.  My suggestion. Pretend play stretches a child’s imagination. She is forced to come up with new scenarios, invent characters and dialogue. All of these activities encourage creative thought  which in turns helps a child learn how to anticipate and come up with alternatives. Building blocks for logic and reasoning later on in life.

Tools: My daughter plays with My Little Pony ponies and in fact, there is an enourmous cottage industry of role-playing on YouTube and my daughter watches hours of it if you let her. But pretend play has helped her expand her vocabulary and her horizons.

I don’t want to be gender divisive, but little boys do, in fact, enjoy playing with toy soldiers and imagining battles for their pieces, plastic dinosaurs and stuffed animals. They too should be encouraged to engage in this type of play.

Online Tools: There are a couple of mobile apps out there that involve role play. My daughter likes the Sofia the First: Story Theater app, Toontastic and Telestory apps are excellent. For older teens,  Second Life apps are also cool for creative playing.

Teens: You teen may be too old for playing make believe, but you can encourage him to audition for the school or town play. If her school has an Odyssey of the Mind club, encourage her to join.

All of these activities are excellent brain developing ones.

Idea 2:  “Take something. Take another thing. And make something new.” My daughter’ s suggestion.  To implement this suggestion for the physical world, you can give a child random objects and ask them to either build something  that already exists out of it or make a new invention. An empty toilet paper roll, yarn and a stick can be used to make a fishing poll or a pulley, for example. It’s about challenging them to think creatively.

Online Tools: Here is where video games like Minecraft actually come in handy. That game is about a virtual world. Players acquire tools along the way to help them build virtual worlds.  Similar building and invention games are great.

Teens: For a teenager, take him or her to a comedy Improv show and later at home have Improv with the family.  Play charades. These are all part of creating something out of nothing or something that is given to you unexpectedly that may not fit. Making it fit is the brain teaser.

jorge-barahona

“Start Little and Progress” –My almost 12-year old son’s suggestion. Think of that cliché about Rome not being built in a day. You’ll have to start with developing basic skills before expecting much otherwise, you’ll fail out the gate.  For example, you may ask your child to write a story, but first he has to come up with characters, then have them decide on a backdrop, then add scenes and scenarios. Make him write a first chapter of a story one day. Then have him pick back up and develop the story from there. And so on, until the process of coming up with a story becomes natural.

Online Tools:  Games that have levels and progress help a child develop a mastery of the tasks. Similarly, education games like IXL Math or other learning apps gradually increase the difficulty as they go along.

Teens: A teen can be tasked with reading a novel, then a series in a novel and then another.  Split up an assignment into tiny sections and then make the amount of work for each section gradually increased. That’s an exercise that is also good for those with ADD and other attention and focus deficiency issues. They shouldn’t be given too much stimulus to comprehend at once.

Hopefully, these tips my children and I came up with will help your journey to help that not-so-creative little thinker in your house. Good luck, parents!

These Are My Chic Work-At-Home Fave Looks

chic-casual

As a work-at-home mom, I live in casual clothing. My school drop off gear usually include yoga or sweatpants, a tee shirt, a baseball cap and slip on sneakers. For casual lunch dates with other mom friends, a coffee shop meet up with a consultant client, or running errands, I try to dress it up a little bit more but not by much. I share some of my favorite looks on my Instagram account @WAHMStyle. (Follow Me There!)

My go-tos during the winter are chunky sweaters over denim jeans, or a silk turtleneck with a blazer. In the Fall, I live in lined leggings under collared shirts. Summer is for sundresses and maxi dresses; and Spring, I’m all about cute and frilly blouses with cropped pants.

I was going through our Pinterest outfits board and spotted a few looks I think represent the look of a casual work at home mom.

070f52d8ac0938e96a593a5bb3700221

I love a Converse high top sneakers. A pair in mint green is ideal for summer and for breathing life and energy into a casual outfit. Distressed jeans are great because you don’t have to bother to press them out which is essential for a hurried mom blogger. A comfy casual screen tee tops off this casual look. Because I work for myself, I am free to experiment with color! So turquoise or Tiffany blue nails are among my favorites.  GET THE LOOK!

In the Spring, cropped boyfriend jeans are perfect because they’re loose and not too snug for when the temperature is warmer but still provide ample coverage for cooler Spring days.  Ballet flats are a comfy option for quick trips because you can leave them by the door and slip them on easily as you head out. I love yellow because it lifts the mood and is overall a good color match for me. I like this Aztec print black and white shirt because of the interesting pattern detail. Chunky jewelry are signature for my style and this bright yellow necklace is to die for! GET THE LOOK!

For casual meetings or casual happy hours, a nice dark colored dress under a blazer or denim jacket work. Wedges or Espadrilles give me height so I can see eye to eye to who I am networking with and a brown slouch bag is a nice in between of super casual and upscale chic. Gold jewelry, wooden cuffs and unique earring are also conversation pieces. GET THE LOOK!

Finally, I love a Maxi Dress because it is among the most flattering styles of dresses. They usually come in cute and funky patterns and can be worn with sandals, flip flops, wedges or low heels; and under a denim  jacket or cardigan. They can be dressed up or down. Fabu! GET THE LOOK!

Researchers Studying High US Maternal Death Rate Seek Survey Participants

crib-empty

Surprisingly, the United States has become the most dangerous industrialized nation in which to give birth, recent data supports.

Scary, huh?

In fact, American women are more than twice as likely to die of pregnancy-related causes as British women, three times as likely as Canadians and six times as likely as Norwegians and Poles, according to 2015 data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington.

While other wealthy nations reduced maternal deaths in recent years, the U.S. maternal mortality rate jumped more than 25 percent from 2000 to 2014, researchers reported last August.

For every expectant or new mom who dies in or shortly after child birth, there are as much as 100 moms who came close to dying and were left with crippling long-term physical, emotional and economic effects. Yikes!

Think hemorrhages, strokes, aneurysms, clots, sepsis infections, cardiac arrest, organ failure and other life-threatening complications of pregnancy and childbirth.

Truth.

The Centers for Disease Control report that these problems have been on the rise, and now exceed 65,000 a year.

There are also frightening disparities also at play. African-American mothers are 3 to 4 times more likely to die or nearly die than whites.

What gives? ProPublica and NPR and Special Correspondent Renee Montagne have launched an investigative study to try to understand why so many American women die and nearly die because of pregnancy and childbirth—and how the health care system can be improved to protect more mothers from harm.

They’ve heard from 2,500 women since launching their study this past February but they are in search of more voices.

If you or someone you know passed away or  nearly did during pregnancy, childbirth, or within a year after delivery, they want to hear from you. Do your part to help researchers get to the bottom of this crisis. Pretty please!

Go to this link and fill? Please tell us your story.

You can also reach the study group by email at maternal@propublica.org or maternalhealth@npr.org. Thanks much!

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Star Audra McDonald Talks Balancing Motherhood and Stardom

audra-mcdonald-audramcdonald-%e2%80%a2-instagram-photos-and-videos

It’s been said that the most calmest new moms are older moms and second time moms. Audra McDonald, who at 46 welcomed her surprise second child, daughter Sally James,  is both.

The Tony-Award winning star told PEOPLE magazine in a recent interview, “I’m calmer this time around, 16 year later…Or maybe it’s that I’m just tired because I’m older, but I don’t sweat the small stuff as much.”

Last October, the Beauty and the Beast star welcomed her second daughter with Broadway actor hubby Will Swenson, with help from her first child 16-year old daughter Zoe.

But it didn’t slow down the acclaimed actress who has also won Grammy‘s and an Emmy-Award in recent years for her music and performances. She posted a photo recently of her glam squad hooking her up while holding Sally.

Her older daughter has also been a big help.

“Zoe is such a fantastic big sister to Sally James,” McDonald says. “That’s just who she wants to hang out with. Every time Zoe walks into the room, Sally lights up. And that’s so important to me.”

She even got to see her baby sister being birthed.

“While I was giving birth to Sally James, Zoe wasn’t planning on being in the hospital room, but she got too curious so she came in,” McDonald told the magazine. “I was so worried about her being overwhelmed that literally, as I was pushing out Sally, I was looking over at Zoe saying, ‘Are you okay? Is there anything you need from me, are you okay?’ ”

“And Zoe kept saying, ‘Mom, would you just concentrate on having the baby!’ But I was literally trying to give birth and parent at the same time.”

Not Your Grandma’s Nappy, Review: These Cloth Diapers are Revolutionary

miosolo-lifestyle-all-2015-prints

Cloth diapers have come a long way from the ones your great grandmother might remember.

Case in point: the award winning designed Bambino Mio.

Unlike traditional cloth diapers, the brand sells super absorbent cloth diapers with Velcro fastening to enable a snug fit. And another benefit is that they are better for the environment. Bambino Mio skips on the chemical gels found in disposable diapers and of course because they are reusable, they are more cost efficient than traditional diapers.

Next up for review! These awesome cloth diapers by @bambinomio ! We loved them! Look for the review on the blog today.

A post shared by Bellyitch_Blog – archived (@bellyitch) on

We were sent a pair to review and we loved the design. Our initial concern was about the holes for the legs. We thought they would be bit too big for a small baby or almost premie which is true, so a smaller newborn would need to pick up in size, then they can use the diaper just fine.

We also feared the diapers would leave an indentation or mark on baby’s legs if put on too tightly, but that was not the case for our tests. They fit fine without any sign the baby was uncomfortable and it dint leave any lines or indentations from being too tight.

miosolo-lifestyle-all-2015-prints-stack-2

The nappies, as they are called in the UK where the company that makes them originates, come in an assortment of fun colors. The quality appear top notched and pretty durable.

There are two different sizes: the misolo for small babies which is a one piece and the miosoft made of two pieces. At about $20US each, that’s a steal considering how much one box of disposable diapers cost and they only last for about a month. Bambino Mio also sells three packs and an entire kit.

They also sell accessories like detergent, waterproof mattress covers, diapers pails, potties, and other essentials. Get it on the store website or at our partners at Amazon.com

Amanda Seyfried and Thomas Sadoski Welcome First Child, a Daughter

Congrats to actress Amanda Seyfried and her brand spanking new husband Thomas Sadoski on the birth of their first child together.

A rep for the couple told PEOPLE magazine that they had a baby girl, but no news yet had been released about her name. The birth comes a week after Sadoski told The Late Late Show that they got hitched in a secret ceremony this month on March 12.

They announced that they were expecting last November 2016. He currently stars in CBS’s  Life in Pieces and she is best known for her role in Mean Girls.
