Keep These 3 Things Secret When You’re Expecting

Bellyitch Rewind

secret

Becoming pregnant can be a momentous occasion that new first time parents-to-be want to share with the entire world. However, there are many parents who have experienced miscarriage and pregnancy loss and have heard horror stories about people’s reactions to various aspects of a woman’s pregnancy when shared with well-meaning friends, family and colleagues.

As a result, some moms- and dads-to-be are cautious about sharing pregnancy and baby related news. When a woman is pregnant, she is particularly vulnerable and sensitive and frankly may not care or need to hear the various opinionated comments that will be hurled at her from all angles. One way to avoid comment, criticism and critique over a choice is to not tell anyone certain information.

1. That you are pregnant: Once the baby’s heartbeat can be seen AND heard, usually by the third month of a pregnancy, the likelihood that will be a viable pregnancy and that fetus growing to term increases exponentially. That is why most parents wait until after the third month to announce to friends. Many parents who do not know this rule make the mistake of announcing too soon and in the unfortunate case they miscarry are then left with the burden of having to tell dozens of people over and over again when they ask that they lost the baby. Therefore, the best rule is to not tell anyone, even the grandparents about the early pregnancy stages if you can help it. Yesterday, I was over a friend’s house and her mom inadvertently kept going on and on about her daughter being sick, not being able to eat shrimp or keep food down. Clearly, she was trying to let us know her daughter is pregnant and I’m certain this woman’s daughter does NOT want us to be among the first to know she and her husband are pregnant. France’s president Nicolas Sarkozy’s dad was the first to confirm accidentally that his daughter-in-law was pregnant before the couple wanted all to know.

2. The name of the baby: Often times, people have strong reactions favorable or unfavorable when you tell them the name you’ve selected for your soon-to-be-born child. Some people will try to talk you out of it or go on and on questioning why you chose that name. It can be annoying. To avoid this, simply don’t share the name. No one is entitled to know your name, not even close family members. Simply say we’re keeping the name private for now. Some will continue to prod. Most people, however, will get it and back off.

3. The gender: Well this may only apply if you are a celebrity and wanting to keep the gender a surprise for your spouse, other family or the public. Think Kelly Rowland to Beyonce’s baby gender news this weekend. Some parents who have two or more children of one gender may be better off just telling people it will be a surprise instead of revealing they’re going to be having yet another child of that same gender. Saves them all the pity looks and questions if they’re going to keep trying. At that point, they’re probably busy preparing for the arrival of the baby being gestated at the time.

I was late to joining Vine when I opened up my account in 2014, and even though I know the platform is popular for children between the ages of 8 and 17, I enjoy Vines tremendously. So…I was very happy to get the alert from the app telling me that I finally had 50 followers! Woohoo!

In celebration, I’m sharing my fave 20 vines including a compilation from a bunch of ones from that famous vine family, the Eb Bees.

Enjoy! (And follow me on Vine!)

Study: Eating Fish While Pregnant is Good for Baby’s Brain, Reduces Autism Spectrum

food-dinner-lemon-rice-large

When mothers eat three sizeable servings of fish each week during pregnancy it may benefit children’s brains for years to come, according to a large study in Spain.

Researchers followed nearly 2,000 mother-child pairs from the first trimester of pregnancy through the child’s fifth birthday and found improved brain function in the kids whose mothers ate the most fish while pregnant, compared to children of mothers who ate the least.

Even when women averaged 600 grams, or 21 ounces, of fish weekly during pregnancy, there was no sign that mercury or other pollutants associated with fish were having a negative effect that offset the apparent benefits.

“Seafood is known to be an important source of essential nutrients for brain development, but at the same time accumulates mercury from the environment, which is known to be neurotoxic,” lead author Jordi Julvez, of the Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology in Barcelona, said in an email….

….The researchers also saw a consistent reduction in autism-spectrum traits with increased maternal fish consumption.

We Want you to Have This Exquisite $100 Baby Blanket by Pappe Luxury Children’s Clothier (WIN)

pappe-kid-assesories

I am a firm believer in the benefits of spending an extra penny to purchase quality and well constructed clothing for children that are durable and will stand the test of time….and the wash.

As I’ve pointed out before, it ultimately ends up costing more to buy cheap clothing for children on the pretense that they grow so fast that there is no value in purchasing expensive items for them anyway.

pappe toddler

Though this is not the case for all low-cost brands, many of the hems in cheaper clothing start to unravel quickly after one wash or one rough and tumble play at preschool. They are often not double or triple-stitched and therefore become tattered fast. Further, the color in cheaper clothes do not always stay true even when you use color-stay detergents created to help the dyes in clothing last longer and not fade after a few washes. Less expensive or less quality clothing start to look old and start to pill.  They then get cycled down to the play clothes drawer shortly after spending a few weeks in the school or nice outings closet. Choosing practical clothes for kids does not have to be that difficult.

When you run your fingers across a top-notched garment,  you notice there is a rich texture and it also looks plush, sharp and elegant.  That can be said about a new Australian label called Pappe which was founded by Karena Simpson, a fashion-forward mom of two who wanted to blend traditional old world European stylings with modern aesthetics.

pappe design

Indeed, the luxurious world-class fabrics that make up the baby, toddler and children’s clothes in this line include Scottish cashmere, organic Turkish cottons and pure wool blends and tweeds.  Despite the exquisite nature of the fabrics, Simpson seemed to have known as a mother that practical clothing matters most!

So she kept it simple and incorporated unisex colors like greys, browns and navy with tartans and stripes.  That way, the clothing, which has a heftier price point, can become heirlooms.

But because they are designer label-level of quality, they will endure. And they can really be used as an heirloom and be passed down to other children or family members.

This is true of Pappe’s blankets which are made from luxurious cotton poplin yarn in a brushed finish with a jacquard weave. The Ottley Twill Blanket is multicolroed on one side for a whimsical touch and can blend in any nursery, serve as a coverlet to a pram or a go-to wrap for nursing baby on the glider.

And you can own your very own Pappe blanket which retails for $89 US ($129.95 AUD)!  Pappe is gifting one fortunate Bellyitch reader her or his very own gorgeous Ottley Twill Blanket with a Jaquard weave to have or gift! Nice!

The Swedish Royals are Having Their Own Baby Boom

the swedish royals

Prince Carl and his wife Princess Sofia are expecting their first child after marrying last June 2015. Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel are expecting their second child. They are parents to almost 3-year old Princess Estelle.

I have been slacking. I tried to do my best to showcase other nations’ royal births other than Duchess Kate and Prince William of Great Britain. I managed to cover most of Crown Princess Victoria of Swedens first pregnancy and a bit of her baby sister Princess Madeleine’s first pregnancy, but then I slacked off big time!

Now, look! There’s a double bumpwatch going on among the Swedish royals.

Victoria is pregnant with her second child right alongside her sister-in-law Princess Sofia, who is married to Victoria’s younger brother Prince Carl Philip.  Carl and Sofia married last June and didn’t waste much time to usher in another heir to the throne.

Baby sister Princess Madeleine and her husband New York businessman Christopher O’Neill have an almost 2-year old daughter Princess Leonora, born in February 2014, and a 7-month old son Prince Nicolas, born last June 2015.

Victoria is mom to 3-year old Princess Estelle, also born in February, in 2013.

Sofia is now 6 months along and Victoria also expects her baby to be delivered in March.  Victoria’s children will inherit the throne first because she is heir apparent, and one of only 4 female heir apparent in monarchs world wide.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia will be delighted at all the new grands coming this Spring.

Royals for everyone!

Social Media & Moms Force Scholastic to Pull ‘Happy Slave’ Books Released on MLK’s Birthday

happy slaves

Scholastic interrupted!

The instructional and educational materials company announced today that it will no longer release the books about happy slaves it released a week before Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s birthday.

An Atlanta teacher and blogger Kia  Morgan Smith, of Cincomom.comwas among those behind a successful campaign  to yank the books “A Birthday Cake for George Washington” and “Happy Birthday Mr. President“.

The problem?  Both books centered on a reportedly true tale about George Washington‘s head chef Hercules, who is portrayed in the books as a jovial and happy character despite the fact he is a slave.

The books were both illustrated by  a famed African American artist Vanessa Brantly-Newton and edited by an African American woman Andrea Davis-Pinkney. (Both who have released wonderful books featuring African American children and families that we love)

American author Ramin Ganeshram, who is of Trinidad and Iranian heritage,  wrote both books.

The vibe of the stories, Morgan Smith said, was revisionist in that they portrayed slavery as an era that was “not that bad.”

Smith coordinated a Change.org petition on behalf of an organization she founded with her daughter, Brown Girls Magic asking for the company to pull the two titles.

“Slaves were not happy,” the petition reads. “Slavery is not a HAPPY event no matter which way you slice it! Slavery can’t and won’t be NORMALIZED!”

In the books, Hercules, the real chef owned as a slave by George Washington, faced the dilemma of making a cake for Washington’s birthday after discovering he was out of sugar. The story is told from the perspective of Hercules’ young daughter Delia.

But despite the happy spin the book places on the “loving exchange between a very determined father and his eager daughter,” Hercules was not indeed happy to be a slave. In fact, though not explained in the books, he ran away in February 1797 and left his 6-year old daughter behind who would never see her dad again, the petition notes. Not a “happy” tale at all.

The petition, which eventually grew to over 1800 signatures in two short days, garnered tons of attention and support in social media and was even the subject of a SheKnows.com article.

Morgan states she was moved to act after reading an article about the books in Clutch.com.  That piece highlighted one reviewer who encapsulated well the problem with the books:

One spread depicts dancing feet and the hems of fancy dresses and shoes of the white revelers at the very top of the page. Hercules, Delia, and the other slaves are seen in the kitchen below, smiling with glee as they work on the cake, evoking a strangely cheerful and exuberant scene reminiscent of a Disney film. Later, when Washington congratulates Hercules on a job well done, Hercules responds, “An honor and a privilege, sir.” Young readers without sufficient background knowledge about the larger context of American slavery may come away with a dangerously rosy impression of the relationship between slaves and slave owners, and those with a deeper understanding are likely to find this depiction offensive. (emphasis added)

One book received more than 100 one-star reviews on Amazon.com and the trade publication School Library Journal called it “highly problematic” and recommended against its purchase, a NY Daily News  report about the book reported.

Oy!

Well, it’s all over now. The petition, media and social media out-roar was a success. Today, Scholastic announced that it will not be further distributing  the books.  Fox and CBS news covered the reversal.

“Scholastic has a long history of explaining complex and controversial issues to children at all ages and grade levels,” the company’s statement read. “We do not believe this title meets the standards of appropriate presentation of information to younger children, despite the positive intentions and beliefs of the author, editor, and illustrator.”

However, before it was yanked, it became the #1 best seller children’s book despite the overwhelming number of 1 star reviews. We suspect purchased, significantly as well,  by people who are offended by the “political correctness” of people being offended by this book.   * Dizzy *

And that was that.

7 Last Minute Ways You and Your Kids Can Celebrate the #MLKDay of Service

MLK Day 1.18.2016 Corporation for National and Community Service

Today, Monday, January 18, 2016, is the MLK Day of Service.

A few Hollywood celebrities including our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Kerry Washington took the time today to recognize Martin Luther King, Jr and the service holiday today in his honor.

  1. As the award-winning actress suggest, take some time off today to get the kids the listen to at least one or a snippet of the Civil Rights hero’s famous speeches.

If you didn’t enroll you or your children to participate in one of the  many service activities organized around the nation, there is still time for you and the children to do something kind on their own for their neighbors or fellow man.

Here are a 6 other  suggestions besides watching a speech and reflecting on its meaning:

  1. Take garbage bags down to the town creek or some other littered area near your home and clean it up.
  2. Make sandwiches and pack fruit and a snack into about a few dozen brown bags and pass them to homeless people in the closest town or city to you.

  3. Gather old toys and bag them up to donate to Goodwill or a local family shelter.

  4. Call a local home for the elderly and ask if you can come by and play cards and/or board games with the residents.

  5. Make Homemade colorful Get Well Greetings cards to send to a local children’s hospital/

  6. Make Festive Thank You Cards to send to the local USO to ship off to military serving abroad.

Good luck and Happy MLK Day of Service!

Attachment Parenting: The Best Celeb Trend Has Got to Be Slings

celeb slings

I love slings as baby carriers so it was great to see new mom Coco Austin toting her newborn Chanel Nicole in one in a recent Instagram share.  She’s been spending a lot of time traveling back and forth from her home in California to Chicago where her husband IceT‘s show Law and Order: SVU  tapes.

“Leaving Chicago….This how we roll,” the TV host and reality TV star captioned the photo.

Bravo! Celebrities are influential and trend-setters. I’m so happy to see that over the past decade or so, many have embraced attachment parenting through baby-wearing slings.

Slings, in my opinion, are better for cradling the natural curve and spine of a new baby compared to those baby carriers which separate baby’s legs and pelvis and have them suspended from a very odd and uncomfortable position.

Because babies cannot talk so many have been forced to endure life strapped in the most uncool spots on their mama’s or papa’s chest. Some new parents do not even bother to pay attention to the warning on the labels of those carriers recommended they be used for babies who can hold their heads up on their own.

I’ve seen so many babies with their heads dangling on the side due to undeveloped neck muscles. When I see it in the malls or at the park, I have to hold myself back from giving them some unsolicited advice.

If I were rich, I’d gift all new moms (and dads) I see with their baby hold up in such contraptions a brand new sling. But I am not so I will just settle for hoping those who watch and emulate celebrities will take cues from Coco and the like and use a sling when they have a new baby.

The 4 Exercises to Do to Lose Weight Post-Pregnancy

exercise

Like most celebrities who get paid to be fit and trim, many moms are eager to get back into pre-pregnant shape and down to their pre-pregnancy size sometime too soon. It is not advisable to start with aerobics or other heavy exercises immediately. You must wait at least six weeks before starting to exert after pregnancy by vaginal way and eight weeks after pregnancy by Cesarean.

Here are the four best ways to get back into your pre-preggers shape:

1. Walking: This is probably the easiest way to carry out your weight loss early pregnancy plan. It is safe and easy; grab your partner and go for a stroll in the neighborhood. A nice walk in the open will surely make you feel better and uplift your mood. Keep in mind not to overexert yourself.

2. Running: If you are an habitual runner then there’s nothing to worry. Getting pregnant doesn’t mean the you will have to stop running . Just keep in mind not to overdo it; never run to the point of exhaustion. Regular burns extra calories and can help you in your weight loss early pregnancy plan.

3. Yoga: If you want to stay fit and lose weight during and after pregnancy then doing pre-natal yoga is the best thing for you. Yoga has many benefits, it is a great stress buster, helps in easing back and joint pains ( very common in pregnant women), and also helps in childbirth and post delivery stages. Overall regular Yoga can help you to go through your pregnancy with minimal worry.

I like Pilates which did a great job for me.

4. Swimming: Swimming is a very good way to exercise and can help in weight loss early pregnancy. It can significantly lower your weight as swimming exercises the whole body. Join any water aerobics class or pre-natal swimming to stay fit and healthy during your pregnancy.

Safety considerations for exercise during pregnancy

To ensure that our exercise program provides us with all of the wonderful benefits outlined above, we also need to do whatever we can to ensure our safety and that of our baby, so below is a list of safety considerations to be aware of; and remember to always speak to your Doctor or Obstetrician if you are unsure.

  1. Avoid becoming overheated.
  2. Avoid high intensity exercise.
  3. Avoid frequent and prolonged exercise after week 28 of your pregnancy.
  4. Limit the amount of exercise that you do lying on your back.
  5. This is of particular concern from your second trimester on.
  6. Avoid the use of hand weights over0.5kgin weight during aerobic classes.
  7. Perform Pelvic Floor (Kegel) Exercises.
  8. Wear a good supportive bra.
  9. Avoid rapid changes in direction and be very cautious if you are doing Step exercise classes.
  10. Stretch gently.
  11. Have a light snack approximately 2 hours before exercise and carry a small carton of fruit juice to your workout.
  12. If at any time during your exercise session you feel very hot, faint, dizzy, short of breath, experience vaginal bleeding, have palpitations, blurred vision, or severe or continuous headaches – STOP EXERCISING IMMEDIATELY.
  13. It is also important to stop if you experience lower abdominal pain, tightness or cramping, back pain or pubic pain. If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your obstetrician as soon as possible.
