SPOOKY! 7 Faces, Objects and Things Other than Their Baby People Have Seen in their Ultrasounds

PAY-Little-King-Arthur (1)

Only you think your baby’s ultrasound is cute but you show them to people anyway who pretend to see what you see and to care about your grainy black and white blob on a flimsy piece of paper. But once in a while you see something spooky or spectacular!

Recently, a couple in the UK decided to name the baby they were expecting King Arthur because they were sure it was a boy. The joke was on Laura Newman and her partner Dan when the ultrasound tech handed them a printout of their ultrasound and spotted an image of King Author!!

Eeeek!!! Spooky

…and now a close up look:

PAY-Little-King-Arthur

And they weren’t the only ones, here are a few interesting images people have seen in their baby’s ultrasound that made the news like…this cherubic angel watching over baby…

Ultra-Sound-demon
And on the flip, how about this super scary figure that looks like a Demon!? Though, the mom thought it looked like a Mermaid or Merman…okay, nice spin, mom!

This ultrasound had a figure that looked like the mom’s late father kissing his grandchild he will never meet live in person. So sweet.

The Lessons from Tisha Campbell-Martin Reveal on How A Sexual Abuse Past Disrupts Breastfeeding Plans

tisha martin campbell

There are many women who have psychological impediments to breastfeeding due to anxiety from past sexual abuse or rape. Dr. Ken‘s  Tisha Campell- Martin is among that group.

The comedic actress, best known for her role on the television shows Martin and My Wife and Kidsopened up for the first time in 2014 on the talk show The Daily Helpline that she was raped at the age of 3.

“It would affect me with breastfeeding my children.” the Househusbands of LA star recently shared with Madame Noir.  She continued:

I didn’t want to with the first one because I felt like I was going to hurt him. You know, that kind of thing. It’s surprising how things kind of pop up out of nowhere. I didn’t know why I felt uncomfortable doing that. I didn’t want to do it, and I felt like it was a lot of pressure for me to do it. Finally, the pediatrician was like, “Can you just stop trying? Because the baby can see your angst.” So I took the pressure off of myself, and it was easier to do it with my second child because I knew what it was then.

There is discomfort to having exposed the breast, stomach and other sensitive areas of the body that was once unwillingly exploited by an abuser. More women, their partners and spouses, doctors and health professionals are becoming aware of this additional impediment to breastfeeding.

It is well known that black women breastfeed their babies at a lower rate than White and Hispanic women, with much of the reasoning pointed to lack of family and hospital support, insufficient education and challenging work situations.

Past sexual abuse is another overlooked reason.

Blogger Leila at My Baby and Blog pointed out an article a little while ago published in Babble which noted that abuse could also impact co-sleeping, as well as breastfeeding. In the piece, Tonia, a mom of two small children, had expressed that she had a tough time breastfeeding because she was abused by an older relative as a teen.

“I breastfed my daughter, but the sensation of nursing and having to give my body over so completely and constantly was extremely unpleasant for me,” she said adding how an attempt to breastfeed her second child led to a breakdown. “Just the thought of doing it all over again, and this time with a 19-month-old [to take care of as well], made me so anxious that I broke down crying one night and decided I would be going straight to formula.”

Not all past abuse victims have breastfeeding challenges, but it is important to not judge women who choose to not breastfeed given the wide variety of reasons out there including the effect of past abuse.

So in the Mommy wars, lay off on those who chose to bottle feed. You never know…

Reality Check: 5 Things They Lied to You about Motherhood

rhoa-phaedra

Few experiences in life are as rewarding and as exciting as becoming a new mom for the first time. It’s also an incredibly mysterious time, as every bit of advice, both solicited and unsolicited, seems to contradict the next. Much of parenting is based upon your own personal style and philosophies, but there are also a few widespread parenting myths that are so accepted amongst new and old moms alike that they’re rarely questioned. Before you start worrying about your performance as a parent or concerning yourself with things that simply aren’t happening, it’s best to apprise yourself of old wives’ tales that have little merit.

1. Your “Motherly Instincts” Will Kick Right In – Many an expectant mother has been reassured by the people around her that the bewilderment she feels will somehow magically disappear the moment a newborn is placed in her arms. The truth of the matter is that you will probably leave the hospital only marginally more comfortable than you were before you went in, and that you will almost certainly never feel like you have all the answers. Very few moms are “instinctively” able to decipher every whimper or cry their babies make, so don’t beat yourself up if these promises don’t come true. Just like most things in life, true expertise comes with experience, not as a result of sudden knowledge imparted by postpartum hormonal changes.

2. You’ll Just Know How to Breastfeed – Yes, breastfeeding is the most natural and healthy way to feed your new baby. That being said, it’s also one of those things that people swear will come effortlessly to a new mother despite the fact that it’s simply not true. There’s a reason why lactation consultants, dedicated support groups and blogs exist solely to cater to breastfeeding assistance: it’s not always so easy! Your baby may have trouble latching, you may need coaching on proper positioning and it may still not work out in your favor. You haven’t failed if your plans to breastfeed don’t come to fruition, and it’s not a sign that your maternal instincts are somehow lacking.

3. Your Baby Will be the Most Beautiful Thing You’ve Ever Seen – When you look at your baby for the first time, you may be completely besotted. That doesn’t mean, however, that she’ll necessarily be beautiful. Birth is difficult business, and it often shows when a baby’s brand new. She may be discolored, she may have a misshapen head from a rough delivery and she may even have acne.

4. You’ll Have Your Old Body Back in No Time – Creating a person takes a toll on your body, and it will show after the birth. Everything from breastfeeding to a scheduled cesarean section is said to be the solution to losing baby weight and getting back into shape quickly, but the truth is that every human body is different. Your best friend might snap back from pregnancy in no time, and you may still be struggling to get back to your old body when your little one starts elementary school. In all likelihood, you’ll never look exactly the way you did before you became pregnant, and it’s not necessarily a reflection on your level of discipline or the amount of effort you’ve put in to losing weight.

5. It’s Just the “Baby Blues” – Postpartum depression is a very real and potentially debilitating condition, and even though it’s openly discussed by celebrity moms and parenting experts, many new moms still believe that what they’re feeling is a simple case of the “baby blues.” Knowing the difference between hormonally-charged mood shifts and bona fide postpartum depression isn’t always easy, which is why it’s important to discuss any concerns you’re feeling with a medical professional

Friend: David Bowie wanted to Live on for his ‘miracle’ Daughter, Alexandria

bowie iman

Although Rock legend David Bowie lost his 18 month battle with liver cancer this past Sunday, January 10, a close friend said he fought hard to live for his now 15-year old daughter Alexandria Zahra Bowie with his wife of 18 years, Supermodel Iman.

“I could see the tears behind his eyes, because he was not a man to show off his emotions. He was really in deep fear,” the family told Daily Mail. “I felt he was not in a death struggle but a struggle for life – he wanted to live on. He has a daughter of 15 and he really wanted to go on, but it was physically not possible. He was ill, but he wanted to live – for his wife and daughter, and for music. That became obvious to me time and time again during our collaboration.”

In an interview with Iman shared that Alexandria brought them closer together. She was considered Iman and Bowie’s miracle baby. Iman had tried IVF to get pregnant, but it was unsuccessful. The couple were considering adoption when they found out Iman was expecting a child.

“We’ve always been very close, but if it’s possible we’ve been drawn even closer,” she said. “There’s a joy or a contentment that’s almost palpable to both of us,” she added. “Overnight, our lives have been enriched beyond belief.”

Bowie’s last project, Blackstar, is Bowie’s 25th studio album and it was just released on his 69th birthday last Friday. It is filled with prolific lyrics in many of the songs including the first single “Lazarus” which starts with the lyrics “Look at me. I’m in heaven.”

Alexandria is Iman and Bowie’s only child together. He also had a 44-year old son, film maker Duncan Bowie, from a previous marriage to model Angela Bowie.

“He made Blackstar for us — his parting gift,” Bowie’s longtime friend and producer Tony Visconti said Monday of the album which features over 2 dozen musicians who remained hush about the project. “I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it.”

This video for Lazarus is indeed haunting but beautiful.

9 Things to Do to Avoid Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Bellyitch Rewind

hair loss graphic

Hair loss is a normal occurrence for a woman after a pregnancy. Telogen effluvium is the medical term for post-pregnancy hair loss, which happens to nearly 50 percent of women after they give birth. A temporary condition, this hair loss should not cause a woman to become bald or experience visibly thin spots. Use these tips to reduce or prevent hair loss after pregnancy.

Steps

  1. Avoid hairstyles that pull or stretch your hair. Braids, cornrows, weaves or tight rollers can pull hair and cause stress and trauma to your scalp. Hair that is excessively pulled is more likely to fall out naturally, without the extra issue of telogen effluvium affecting your hair growth cycle.
  2. Maintain a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are not only naturally health, but they also contain flavonoids and antioxidants that protect hair follicles. Additionally, these foods encourage increased hair growth, which can offset any hair lost after pregnancy.
  3. Add vitamins and nutrients to your diet. Vitamin B complex, vitamins E and C, zinc and biotin help increase hair strength and health. Take extra supplements or eat foods rich in these nutrients and vitamins to help retain pre-pregnancy locks.
  4. Select a shampoo with quality ingredients. Shampoos that contain biotin or silica improve hair health and stimulate follicle growth. Use this shampoo regularly and rinse with cold water.
  5. Comb your wet hair with a wide-toothed comb. A wide-toothed comb reduces the amount of pulling and stress you apply to your hair as you attempt to remove tangles after washing it. Excessive pulling of your hair can increase the chances of it falling out.
  6. Reduce the use of heated styling tools. Heated styling tools like curling irons, hot rollers, flat irons and blow dryers dry hair out and may increase hair loss. Allow your hair to air dry and style it naturally. If you must use heated styling tools, use the coolest settings possible or give your hair a cool shot of air afterward with your hair dryer.
  7. Trim split ends. Split ends cause your hair to be less healthy. Unhealthy hair is shed in larger amounts than healthy hair.
  1. Avoid stress. Having a new baby to take care of can create more stress in your life, but try to avoid additional stressful situations or feelings. Stress can cause your hair to fall out or decrease in thickness. Avoid stress to increase your chances of retaining more of your pre-pregnancy hair
  2. Get a shorter haircut. Long hair weighs more and pulls from your scalp with its constant downward pull. Shorter haircuts cause less pressure to your hair follicles, which will decrease chances of increased shedding. A shorter hairstyle may cause your hair to look fuller and healthier, in addition to being easier to take care of than longer styles.

Take it easy and good luck new moms!

The 15 Rules to Adhere to When You Bring your Baby Home from the Hospital

Bellyitch Rewind

new baby rules

When you bring your newborn home there are a lots of things in the environment that can easily get him or her sick. But there are things you can do to minimize the risk of your new baby getting ill.

Here are 15 simple tips you can try to follow compliments of Newborn care:

  1. Be Firm With Friends and Relatives – It’s natural to want to show your newborn off to your nearest and dearest, but they can present a health risk for her. It’s important to keep in mind that not only is it okay to be firm in regard to your child’s health, it’s imperative. Don’t let a cousin with a case of the sniffles handle your new baby or allow loved ones to pick her up before washing their hands.
  2. Insist on Good Hand Washing Habits – One of the most effective ways of protecting your newborn’s health is to insist that everyone who touches her wash their hands thoroughly before doing so. Hands come into contact with so many germ-laden surfaces and objects throughout the day that it’s just not a good idea to skip a thorough scrubbing before cuddling.
  3. Keep the Kisses Away from Baby’s Face – Newborns are so cute and cuddly, they seem to be just begging for affection. No matter how much you want to cover her little face with kisses, it’s smart to keep in mind just how many germs are carried by your saliva.
  4. Don’t Skip the Vaccinations – There’s a battle raging amongst parents about the efficacy of vaccinations versus their perceived risks, but vaccinations do prevent many illnesses. Not only should your infant be immunized according to doctors’ recommendations, but so should older siblings and adults that will be caring for her.
  5. Remember that Breast is Best – Breastfeeding isn’t always an option, but it’s one that should be carefully considered if there’s any feasibility at all. In cases of adoption, low milk production or a mother’s need to be on medications that can be excreted through breast milk, formula is a perfectly adequate nutritional substance. It doesn’t, however, contain the antibodies that boost a baby’s new immune system.
  6. Avoid Crowded Places – Shopping malls, restaurants or even dinner parties can be crowded areas with high concentrations of people who are carrying communicable illnesses. In the interest of keeping your baby healthy, it’s wise to save his big debut for a time when his immune system is a bit more developed.
  7. Pay Special Attention to Older Siblings – Older siblings who attend preschool, daycare or elementary school are exposed to illness-spreading germs all day long, and they may have developed a resistance that allows them to still carry those germs without exhibiting symptoms of illness themselves. Make sure that your older children understand the importance of good hygiene, especially when it comes to spending time with a new baby.
  8. Keep Your Doctor’s Appointments – Time is a commodity that new parents seldom have an adequate supply of, but it’s important to remember that appointments with your pediatrician should be kept if at all possible.
  9. Hire an Experienced Caregiver – The rookie nanny you’re considering might be enthusiastic, but she may also lack the experience or training that will allow her to confidently care for a newborn without spreading illnesses. While it’s perfectly acceptable to hire a nanny with little to no practical work experience, you should make sure that she’s well-versed in the care of newborns and minimizing the spread of germs.
  10. Keep the Nursery Clean – When you’re sleep deprived and living on the quick snacks you can fit in during Baby’s naps, the idea of house cleaning probably isn’t an appealing one. Making sure that your newborn’s nursery is clean, however, is one of the best ways to prevent her from becoming sick.
  11. Practice Good Crib Safety Habits – Guarding your newborn’s health doesn’t just mean keeping her clear of illness-causing germs; it also requires you to be focused on her safety. Fluffy pillows, snuggly blankets and soft crib bumpers may seem like great tools for keeping her comfortable, but they can actually increase her risk of SIDS. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants’ cribs contain no pillows, plush toys or thick blankets.
  12. Minimize Play Dates – If your older children are accustomed to hosting play dates, it may be a smart move to consider putting them on hold for a few months or working with other parents in your playgroup to find alternate hosting solutions until your newborn is a bit older.
  13.  Keep Pets Clear of the Nursery – Fido might be man’s best friend, but he doesn’t need to be licking your newborn’s face or spreading dander throughout her nursery. Making the baby’s room a pet-free zone for a while can reduce the number of germs and contaminants that she’s exposed to during the earliest days of her life.
  14. Sterilize Bottles and Nipples – It simply isn’t possible to keep every germ away from your newborn, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make an effort to protect her from them when you’re able. Sterilizing the bottles and nipples that she puts into her mouth during feeding time is one of the measures that you shouldn’t neglect.
  15. Take Care of Yourself! – An exhausted, overworked parent’s immune system might not be the most effective, so it’s important that you make every effort to take care of yourself, too. When you’re sick, it’s difficult to avoid passing those illnesses on to your baby. Guarding your own health and well-being isn’t self-indulgent; it’s a necessary step of preventing the spread of illnesses to your child.
