Saint Patrick’s Day Facts and Activities to Add to Your Homeschooling

A lot of families in the US are home St. Patrick’s Day and their kids are distance learning.

It may be easier to incorporate a little bit of the story behind St. Patrick’s Day into their home schooling curriculum.

In a nutshell, a man named Patrick converted a large group of Irish people from Paganism to Christianity and was made a Saint.  Now considered the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick used the shamrock as the symbol of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The color green is used because of the rich green hills that are found all over Ireland.  You may be wondering how St. Patrick’s Day turned into a day for drinking, and there is a reason for that too.  St. Patrick told a bar owner who was cheating his customers by pouring short glasses of liquor that there was a demon in his basement and that the only way to be rid of it was to be generous.

After that, St. Patrick said that everyone should celebrate with some of the hard stuff on St. Patrick’s Day. However, the holiday isn’t solely reserved for those of legal drinking age; there are plenty of family-friendly things to do to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day too.

Check out these 20+ blog entries to find craft projects to make with the kids, decorations for your home, recipes to make for your family and other activities to do as well.

How to Make CDC-Compliant Hand Sanitizer at Home {DIY Style}

hand sanitizer

hand sanitizer

The current coronavirus outbreak has caused a lot of people to make a run on hand sanitizers.  Sadly, the rush has led to a shortage and plenty of empty shelves.

My family traveled to several stores over the weekend looking to restock and could not find a bottle around. What to do? For crafty people, (and even for non-crafty folks) there is an option of making your own hand sanitizer.

The trick is to make sure you use sufficient alcohol to ensure the disinfectant impact remains. There are a lot of recipes out there and circulating in social media that call for a lot of fragrant oils to mask the alcohol scent and to counter the drying effect of alcohol.

The problem with that is that it dilutes the impact. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the sanitizer has 60% alcohol content.

Commercial hand sanitizers likely have a concentration of somewhere between 60% to 90% alcohol so you have to be careful about formulas out there. I found a recipe that is basic and does the trick and contains sufficient amount of hand sanitizers

You will need:

1/3 cup Aloe Vera Gel

2/3 cup Rubbing Alcohol  (Use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol)

Few drops of essential oil in the fragrance of your choice (optional)

A pump or squirt bottle

Funnel

Instructions:

Add the gel to a bowl of alcohol and stir

Stir in an essential oil if using.

Transfer to a squirt bottle or pump bottle using a funnel.

You can roll a piece of thick construction paper into a cone

Do not pour it into a spray bottle as this is a gel-like mixture.

That’s it. Toss in your purse, diaper bag, and drop one in each kid’s back pack.

5 Things Your Study At Home Set-Up Needs to Have

As U.S. schools and colleges nationwide react to the global coronavirus pandemic, many education institutions are moving classes online—or planning to—and students are having to deal with the transition to SFH.

Many Americans are familiar with the acronym WFH (Work From Home); however, not as many are familiar with the similar acronym SFH (School From Home).

Brainly, the world’s largest online learning community with 150 million monthly users, surveyed 1,600 U.S. high school and college students to find out how the coronavirus is impacting them.

Nationwide, 40% of students worry their grades will be negatively impacted by school closures or transitions to online classes due to coronavirus.

Eric Oldfield, Chief Business Officer of Brainly, has a few tips for students who are suddenly having to SFH to maximize their productivity and ensure they don’t fall behind during the lapse in classroom instruction.

1. CARVE OUT SPACE. Setting up a dedicated SFH zone that is organized and tech-ready is crucial to maintain a routine and ensure academic success. If you are not able to carve out space for a desk and are working at a kitchen table, on the couch or on a countertop, Brainly recommends having a designated school bag where you keep your computer and any necessary school materials. This allows you to be flexible in your schoolwork space but also have everything you need in one place.

2. BREAK TIME. Nationwide, 40% of students report that staying focused is the biggest challenge when receiving online instruction. And let’s face it: sitting and learning for hours on end can be extremely mentally exhausting. The easiest ways students can ensure they’re able to stay focused when SFH is taking breaks to recharge their minds. So, what is the ideal length of your breaks? The best way to maximize productivity is by taking SHORT breaks – say 5 to 15 minutes – every hour or so. Then take a longer break – at least 30 minutes – every 2 to 4 hours (depending on your tasks).

3. SOCIAL INTERACTION. Humans are social animals, and SFH can feel isolated for many students who are used to highly social interactions and periods of time throughout their day. Thankfully, online communities like Brainly or Kahoot bring in elements of social learning and encourage collaboration and the exchange of knowledge and ideas. You can take advantage of any number of these peer-to-peer learning platforms to stay engaged.

4. NO PAJAMAS. For many students starting to SFH for the first time, it can be difficult to delineate the start of the school day and ensure they get in the right academic mental space without the physical classroom around them. One of the best ways to ensure you continue academic routines and success is to actually get up and get dressed for the day as if you were still going to a physical class. Plus, bonus points that you’ll look good for video-conferencing if needed!

5. BE HEALTHY. It’s no secret that you can’t concentrate when you’re hungry and you won’t be prepared to bring your A-game if you haven’t had a proper night’s rest. Students should make sure they have ready-to-grab nutritious snacks prepared for their SFH days so they don’t have to take disruptive breaks to rifle through the pantry or refrigerator to find something to eat. Similarly, sleep and exercise are just as crucial for SFH success as they are for a regular school day– if not more.

Good luck, Parents…and kids!

5 Apps That Won’t Let You Goof Off While ‘Teleworking’

Reprint from Techyaya.com Working from home can be very difficult if you are the type of person who requires structure, a dedicated office space and to be in an environment where work is getting done and there isn’t a comfy couch or bed within footsteps distance. With the novel coronovirus causing a lot of companies to require their employees to telework, many more people are going to have to find out how they shake out as a remote worker. For those who require assistance with productivity, fortunately, there are a lot of apps available to help create the structure they will be missing while out of the office and still expected to produce. Some people have a difficult time being productive with no immediate accountability, and need a little push. Here are some of the best apps for productivity on the market, so you can maximize your productivity without compromising your happiness. Here is a roundup of

1. Tasker or Shortcuts

To help with your work flow and keep you on track, use the Tasker app which automates and personalizes functions on your phone like your personalized smartphone functions, such as accessing your music when the headphones are plugged in, auto texting your kids when you’re five minutes away from picking them up at practice or downloading and saving photos into an album. The iOS version is Shortcuts.

2. Focus To Do or Pomodoro Time

I shared a bit about my discovery of a Productivity Journal using the Pomodoro Technique, which breaks tasks down into 25-minute increments, and to help that along and make sure you are continuously working through the day, there is the FREE Focus To Do app for Android which implements a productivity timer and the Pomodoro Time app, which utilizes the same technique.

3. Microsoft To Do App for Desktop and iOS.

As a compulsive list maker, I love the idea of a digital version that will hep you create pretty lists that do more like sent you reminders, set due dates and times for each tasks. Microsoft To Do App is such a desktop app. You can attach pics and docs on your phone and use it sort of like Evernote or Notepad. Then it syncs with the phone or tablet and computer to make editing, printing and maximizing the functionality of your daily to do list. The IFTTT (If this Then That) App on Android does something similar. You can download the App Version too called Wunderlist.

4. Freedom for iOS.

Freedom is one of many productivity apps that will block your access to all of the distraction like social media sites, game sites and others. It locks your desktop for up to 8 hours. This is great for stopping you from mindless and endless surfing when there is no one around to tell you to get back to work!

5. Pocket

Don’t pause to read all the interesting articles that come across your twitter and Facebook feed during the day. Instead use the Pocket app on Android and save them all for later to read when you’re done with work or taking a break. . h/t Entrepreneur
