American Idol alum Fantasia Barrino is pregnant.

The singer and actress announced the news that she and husband Kendall Taylor are expecting their first child together during an Instagram Live session on Tuesday.

It appears from her post that she may have had fertility issues and relied on prayer to help her conceive.

“Keep talking to God, which is the same thing that I did. I kept talking to God,” Barrino said, while referencing the fact that her doctor told her one of her Fallopian tubes was closed.

“Keep trying, and you will conceive,” Barrino said.

Barrino has two children, Zion Quari, 19, and Dallas Xavier, 8, from previous relationships. Taylor also has a son, Treyshaun.

Barrino, who won Season 3 of “American Idol” in 2004, also shared a separate post on Wednesday about her pregnancy.

“God I Want To Thank You!” Barrino wrote. “You Gave Us A Seed even when the Doctor said that one of my Tubes were Closed you said Different. @salute1st I Love You King and I can’t wait to see who He or She acts Like.”

Celebs And Conception: What You Won’t Get From Most Media

When it comes to celebs and conception, the picture is often pretty skewed. If media accounts were anything to go by, our fave famous people are visited by conception fairies during the night. Just like that, they wake up pregnant. The speed of Meghan Markle‘s pregnancy is a fantastic example. If there were ever motivation to believe in the baby and stork story, our celebs would be it.

But, this is far from the baby reality. Conception is harder work than most of us expect it to be. Far from becoming impregnated overnight, we have to go all out to track ovulation and make the most of prime moments. Even after all that, around 6.1 million women in the U.S. struggle to conceive. That’s a lot of women, and this immaculate conception image of our celebs doesn’t help.

The fact is that struggling to conceive can take its toll on any couple. Continual reminders of how easy this is for others just makes things harder. Not to mention that it’s unrealistic . A quick look at the facts suggests that not everyone gets as lucky as our royal love birds. Many famous women have come forward over the years to speak out about conception struggles. If this is a battle you’re caught in at the moment, read on to remind yourself that you aren’t alone.

Kim Kardashian

Health problems meant pregnancy was no longer an option for our favorite Kardashian

Kim and Kanye are fan faves. Along with having millions of adoring fans. This is the ultimate glam couple that a lot of people love to hate. Don’t get us started on the politics game either. Right now, the duo are over in Africa donating shoes to poor kids and pledging to build schools and infrastructure.  They’re also known for their speedily grown family. But, Kardashian makes no secret about the fact that it took over a year to conceive her second child due to something called placenta accreta. The condition caused her to have operations which led to complications resulting in a hole in her uterus. While the two did overcome the odds and conceive, the struggles weren’t over yet. During her second pregnancy, Kardashian developed preeclampsia. This meant that, despite her desire for a third child, doctors warned pregnancy was too risky. The couple didn’t let that stop the growth of their family, though. The pair decided to look into using a surrogacy program instead. They’re now strong advocates for the cause, claiming that they’re ‘really thankful’ they went down this route. See, even Kardashian’s come up against medical complications on this challenging journey.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Our favorite Sex in the City girl has a story which rings relatively similar to the one above. Though she conceived her first child naturally later in life, SJP experienced secondary infertility issues with gusto. Unlike the Kardashians, this struggle on went on for years until she and her partner decided to consider alternative routes. SJP has never come forward about the exact reasons behind her troubles, but it’s thought she attempted IVF before settling on a surrogate which led to the birth of twins in 2009. During an interview in Vogue the following year, SJP said, “Meeting your children rather than giving birth to them, it’s as if, um, it’s suspended animation. The gestational experience is gone,” adding, “it’s so different and equally extraordinary… But it’s amazing.” So, it seems as though this story, at last, has a happy ending. But, let us not forget the struggle which came before it. Ladies of the world; Sarah Jessica Parker has been here before you.

Nicole Kidman

Even the fantastic Nicole Kidman has come up against conception demons. The actress adopted two children with ex-husband Tom Cruise, but she didn’t conceive her daughter until the age of 41. She then spoke out on Australia’s ‘60 minutes’ about her struggles to conceive again. This is a journey which again led Kidman to turn to a surrogate to achieve her family dreams. “Anyone who’s been in the place of wanting another child or wanting a child knows the disappointment, the pain and the loss that you go through trying,” she said. “We were in a place of desperately wanting another child. I couldn’t get pregnant.” Luckily, it all worked out okay in the end, with a second daughter for Kidman and husband Keith Urban.

A final word

All these stories could be real inspirations for struggling women. We can’t thank these amazing ladies enough for coming forward. The only trouble is, these stories aren’t as easy to find as they should be. We certainly don’t see celeb IVF battles on the covers of magazines. Perhaps, then, there should be less focus on ‘how to get rid of your baby belly’, and more attention on how to conceive in the first place.

Gabrielle Union’s 9 Miscarriages Show Why You Shouldn’t Make Assumptions About Childless Women

Being Mary Jane star Gabrielle Union opens up about suffering 8 or 9 miscarriages, and having fertility struggles in her new book, “We’re Going to Need More Wine.”

The actress writes in the book, which is a collection of essays, “for three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant—I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

Union and Miami Heat NBA basketball player Dwyane Wade have been married since 2014.

She also talks about how being a stepmom to her husband’s three sons from previous relationships, 15-year old Zaire, 10-year old Zion and 3-year old Xavier changed her mind on wanting to have her own children.

“I never wanted kids,” she shared. “Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them.”

In a December 2014  interview with Uptown magazine, Union opened up about that desire.

“I think my brain and my heart are screaming baby fever… I’ve lasted 42 years without having a human being come from one of my orifices and I feel okay and fulfilled and happy,” she said. “If it does happen, it’s a miracle—a medical miracle at least. I mean, we’d love to. We’ll see what my ovaries say.”

She told the site that if she does not conceive, she will be okay. “I have really awesome stepkids, so I feel equally as fulfilled.”

But alas, we know that the plans to have a baby had started since way back then and she is still on that journey.

While working on starting her family, the Birth of a Nation actress has to endure the pain of constant rumors about her being pregnant.

Ugh! The dreaded celebrity bump watch speculation!

“Once a month I look like I’m in my second trimester because I’m bloated,” she shared, referring to the side-effects of her IVF injections. “It leads to the questions and it leads to the rumors and anytime I go into a doctor’s office I feel like I’m a member of SEAL Team Six undercover because I don’t want people to speculate.”

Then it’s the constant prodding by well-meaning people who just ask invasive and insensitive questions.

“For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’” Union said. “A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”

And there you have it! The reason why one should never make presumptions and impose on women’s private live about family-starting.

You can pre-order the book now though it won’t be released until October 17.

This NYC Math Professor Gives His Sperm Away in Target To Women Wanting a Baby

c5a273yw8aal5jz

A CUNY math professor is giving away his sperm to women around the world willing to wait for him to ejaculate into a cup in a Target bathroom stall and then inject themselves with his specimen and get pregnant.

This Father’s Day Weekend, the New York Post followed up on a June story it did on Ari Nagel, nicknamed the “Sperminator“, who has fathered 32 kids and counting. The married father of three conceived some “the old-fashioned way” and others  via “sperm hand-offs at public spots such as the Atlantic Center Target in downtown Brooklyn,” the paper reports.

Nagel got tons of press and new attention after the NYPost’s feature on him and since then, has been jet setting across the globe to meet up with women wanting his sperm, and fielding inquires from “from Turkey, Nigeria, South Africa and even China.”

According to the June 17th published article, these trips include one to Israel to meet a woman who will freeze his sperm to take to a clinic.

Of an upcoming trip to Vietnam to meet with a wheelchair bound client, Nagel tells the paper, “this crippled woman’s story really hit home, She said, ‘It’s all I ever wanted.’ You just have a vibe that she’d be an amazing mom,” adding that this baby will diversify his portfolio. “I don’t have an Asian baby yet.”

In mid-July, a hopeful from Taiwan is flying in to New York to meet with him.

He only charges for the specimen so the women in New York whose babies he has fathered perhaps cannot afford to go through a traditional regulated clinic which follows health procedures and likely subjects donors and clients to mental and physical exams, genetic testing, infectious diseases screening and protect them from all the legal ramifications of sperm donor-ship.

Nagel poses with two women pregnant with his chidren – Nagel on Twitter

As the Post notes, several of Nagel’s children have Black mothers, and one of those moms, Blandine Rodney, who said someone told her that he is trying to “whitewash the black community,” to which the says Rodney. “It’s not whitewashing! More white men should give sperm to women who need it.”

The 43-year-old Brooklyn nurse also said of Nagel: “He’s handsome, he’s a genius. I’d be proud to have my child say Ari is his father.” So, there’s that.

One of the consequences of the fact there is no record or tracking of Nagel’s offsprings is the large number of half-siblings growing up at the same time in the same part of New York city and not knowing they’re related.

One of Nagel’s  “baby mamas”, a Connecticut woman named Crystal who has two sons, ages 6 and 7, by him, says: “To know my kids have so many siblings out there, it’s not something I would have wanted for my children.”

Some of the women have filed for child support and he has had to pay them. He said that the women “went back on their word” to not sue him for support but he is paying them, and the “money is going to his child.” It was discussed on an episode of The Doctors.

This mom just gave birth to a set of twins fathered by Nagel

This mom just gave birth to a set of twins fathered by Nagel

Crystal, 45, took Nagel to court for child support, saying that she was expecting to co-parent with him and that she didn’t know of his plans to father an entire baseball team.

“My kids got left in the dust,” says the woman, who conceived both boys through intercourse. “You can’t co-parent with 20-something kids.”

(The other four who sued could not be reached or had no comment.)

Some may  look at this story and have an opinion on the other potential harm from such bootleg, back alley process but if acquiring a sperm donor via a legal and sanctioned bank is cost-prohibitive,  then these women are willing to take the risk to achieve motherhood.

Editor’s note: Nagel tries to come off as altruistic by mentioning that he is also a bone marrow donor, but the fact that his wife, who he says he is not romantically involved with, didn’t know for a year about his exploits is worrisome. He may just be a narcissist who is using all of this attention to feed his ego and desire to feel important and needed, but I’m not psychiatrist but this case is certainly one for the books

So…Your Fitbit Can Help You Get Pregnant Now

getty

Getting pregnant can be tricky. One way an aspiring mother can make it easier is to know when she’s most fertile, a period spanning a few days every month when her body undergoes hormonal changes. And certain body-tracking wristbands may be able to detect these subtle shifts in your biometrics, like your heart rate and body temperature. Depending on the device, it could even help you go one step further and actually conceive.

Recently, the women’s health data startup Clue ran an internal test to see if Fitbits could improve the experience of women who track their periods on its popular app and are trying to get pregnant. Scientists put Fitbits on five employees and found that the devices could track their resting heart rate patterns during their menstrual cycles.

The devices also showed that resting heart rate spiked shortly before ovulation began, according to the Berlin company, which presented data from the small, preliminary study at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology’s annual meeting this month.

Janet Jackson will Join List of 40+ Celebrities who gave Birth after 40

janet jackston

At 49-years old, pop singer Janet Jackson is reportedly pregnant with her first child with husband Wissam Al ManaEntertainment Tonight exclusively reports.

Last month, Jackson canceled her latest tour, citing doctor’s orders for her to take it easy while she plans a family. Then, given her advanced maternal age, most people speculated that she would likely be using a surrogate or adopting a child.

With modern advancement in medicine, what was once almost impossible is now very much possible for older women wishing to have children.

These 40 Celebrities had Babies After Age 40

Bellyitch Rewind

When Actress Laura Linney gave birth to her first child last year, January 15, 2015,  she became the oldest celebrity woman to give birth “naturally” at age 49. She outseated actress Kelly Preston who gave birth to her son Benjamin when she was 48.  It was the first child for the The Truman Show  star and her husband since 2009, Marc Schauer.

Linney was among a long list of celebrities who managed to stay under the radar for the majority of their pregnancy including: Tamar Braxton AdeleNicole Richie, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson and Beyonce who all announced at the 5th month mark that they were “with child.”  She was more successful than Lost  actress Evangeline Lily, who  never told anyone she was pregnant and was eventually busted by paparazzi at 8 months pregnant while she was living in Hawaii. Linney also bested Jennifer Hudson who looked to be about 8 months pregnant when a wayward photographer caught her and her boyfriend out and about, trying to be inconspicuous.
And at 49, Linney also joins the over 40 baby club which includes:
  1. NICOLE KIDMAN gave birth to her first child, Sunday Rose, at the age of 40 with her husband, Keith Urban.
  2. SUSAN SARANDON  gave birth to her son, Jack at age 42. Three years later, she welcomed another son, Miles, at age 45.

This is a Latin America First: A Transgender Man is Pregnant with His Transgender Partner’s Baby

Well 2015 wouldn’t close without at least one more unique pregnancy story.

A transgender Ecuadoran Father-to-Be will be carrying the baby of his partner, a transgender Mother-to-Be.

That’s right. Fernando Machado was born a female with a birth name Maria. His partner Diana Rodgriguez was born a male with the birth name Luis.

The couple, believed to be the first of its kind in all of South America, announced on social media earlier this month that Machado was pregnant. Although both of them take hormones, neither has undergone gender-reassignment surgery so the child-to-be was conceived the old-fashioned way and it is not expected that there will be any medical complications.

Rodriguez is one of Ecuador’s most prominent LGBT activist and she said they decided to publicize the pregnancy to help change attitudes in the very devout Roman Catholic culture in that country, and Latin America, generally.

“We’re trying to break the myths about transsexuality,” Rodriguez told The Associated Press.

There hasn’t been a peep from church leaders thus far, which surprises Rodriguez.

“The church is always criticizing gays and homosexuals for adopting children, so it would be a contradiction to criticize us for giving birth naturally,” she told AP from her Guayaquil home.

There has been some advances in Trans rights in South America. For example, earlier this year, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos issued a decree which permitted individuals to change their gender on their national ID cards and so far, about 340 people in the massive nation have switched their gender.

Meanwhile, Argentina passed legislation that provides for free hormone treatment and gender reassignment surgery.

It’s a small step against the stats which show that 70% of the 664 transgender people murdered in the world were killed in Latin America, according to a study by the International AIDS Alliance.
