USWeekly reports a source to JayZ saying that to help his wife avoid packing on the pregnancy poundage, he is joining her in a “partially vegan” diet.
I’m assuming, if in fact true, that means that they would incorporate some dairy and animal product or animal fat in their diet from time to time. Some doctors advice against pure vegan diets during pregnancy because at that critical time, the body needs increased sources of iron and protein for mom and baby to sustain a healthy pregnancy. It is possible to get these elements on a vegan diet but perhaps not in a high enough volume recommended by some practitioners.
Other celebrities pregnant this year Emily Deschanel, Alicia Silverstone and Natalie Portman faced harsh criticism for their decisions to maintain a vegan diet during their respective pregnancies. Each defended the choice. Portman switched from vegan to vegetarian after getting pregnant, however. In all cases, they delivered healthy babies devoid of any known major complications.
One can only assume they were under strict care of a dietitian, nutritionist, and/or a physician who helped them make sure they were taking in sufficient nutrients so their babies’ health and development weren’t compromised while on their strict diets.
It’s an interesting debate. What are your thoughts? Do you think a vegan diet or partial vegan diet would be unwise during pregnancy? Do you think switching to a strict diet to avoid weight gain is wise or reasonable if undertaken in moderation and under supervised or monitored care?
