A hospital in Spain was able to salvage one piece of healthy tissue from a woman who had most of her ovaries removed during a bout with Ovarian Cancer, UPI reports.
Following treatment and becoming cancer-free, doctors at Barcelona’s Sant Joan de Deu hospital re-implanted the salvaged tissue, not the entire organ, into the 31-year old woman’s body and miraculously she became pregnant.
Doctors say growth factors extracted from her blood enabled the ovary section to function and produce eggs.
That same hospital is reported to be housing the ovarian tissue of 173 other patients being treated for various forms of cancer. The harvested tissue would allow them to conceive after they overcome their respective cancer battles.
Ingenious! I predict many more patients traveling there to get that treatment and/or hospitals worldwide scrambling to offer the service. It could save much heartache for millions of current and future cancer patients….unless we find a cure for cancer, hopefully, in the years and decades coming.
