Recently, many black women bloggers and natural hair stylists were harshly criticizing actress/philanthropist Angelina Jolie for putting extensions in her Ethiopian daughter Zahara Jolie-Pitt‘s hair. They were upset because they said the extensions would pull at Zahara’s natural hair and cause breakage and that it would send a bad messsage to Zahara that the length of her hair is not good enough. They also argued the move would encourage Zahara to covet long hair. (Check out the lengthy commentary and opinions Here, Here, Here and Here)

I think Denine Miller from My Brown Baby said it best in her December 20 post: Mind Your Business! Well not precisely. More artfully, Millner wrote: ” What’s good for my daughters’ hair may not be so for your daughters’ hair and vice versa, and though I’m a huge proponent of natural hair for little girls, I’m also a huge proponent of letting mothers decide for themselves how they want to style their own daughters’ hair.”

Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith‘s daughter Willow is often seen rocking fab braids with extensions. No one makes similar comments about her or other young celebrity kids photographed with braids such as daughters of Forrest Whitaker, Nicole and Eddie Murphy or Tichina Arnold, for example.

It does take a village to raise a child, but sometimes villagers need to know when to mind their business and butt out.
