Bringing home a new baby is a fun and exciting time in your life. However, your pooch may not be as thrilled as you are. Eliminate any jealousy your dog may have with a few simple tips. Making your pet feel comfortable around the baby is essential to avoid behavioral problems in the present or future.
1. Introduce them to Baby’s Smell: Before you even bring the baby home, you can begin acquainting your dogs with the new baby. Introduce them to the smells of a new baby. This can be through the laundry detergent you will use especially for baby. Wash your baby’s new items in the detergent and allow the dogs to sniff that item every day. You may even want to wash their blanket with the same detergent so they can be around that smell. Another way to introduce dogs to the new smells of babies is to allow them to smell the baby shampoo or soap you will be using during baby’s bath time.
2. Introduce them to Baby’s Noises: Some dogs are very sensitive to noises, especially new noises. Play sound clips or Youtube videos of babies crying and making typical baby noises to get your dog use to the sound. When the baby does come home, the dog will not feel threatened by the new noises.
3. Don’t Forget Your Pet: While babies are an extremely important part of our families and will hold a significantly higher spot in your heart than your dog will, don’t forget about him. You may not be able to spend as much time with your beloved canine, but remembering to feed him and give him a few extra kisses and pets a day will make the pooch not feel forgotten.
While it is understandable that you will love your precious child much more than your pooch, it is still best to make your pet feel comfortable with your new baby. Eventually, your baby will be able to interact with your pets, and you want your pets to receive them nicely without any harm.
