In the press and media, pregnant celebrities and celebrity moms often look fitter, tighter, better and more airbrushed when we see them than the average every-day mom. Yes, their job is to look fabulous, but not all people appreciate the fact that there is a lot of surgery, personal trainers, private chefs and photoshopping that help them look so great!
The effect of this all is that real moms sometimes feel inadequate about their own bodies and can occasionally lose perspective on how MOST women’s bodies look like during and after pregnancy.
With that in mind, a mom decided to launch a new website called The Shape of A Mother. Through it, she encourages moms to upload photos of their bodies with the hopes that it helps others appreciate their bodies as is and not feel ashamed. Mothers share their stories and photos and can enter them in various categories: belly, breasts, c-section, plus size, twins, VBAC etc. Be mindful of watching it at work however, as there are some semi nude images.
I think it is a wonderful concept. It is so easy to get caught up in all of the glamorous and romanticized imagery that magazines, websites (eh hem, this one included) and other media promote and elevate as the standard of the post-giving birth mom.
I’m hopeful that this site gets more much deserved elevation and awareness. It should be a must review for any new mom.
Everyone, should check out The Shape of A Mother at some point. Good job, mom!
