Celeb Mamas Slayed 2019’s Met Gala Pink Carpet

This year’s annual gala to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of the Arts, was more over the top than ever before.

Perhaps because the theme was “Camp”, maybe, celebrities brought extra extravagance and bold and gregarious fashion and antics.

The official theme of the Met’s 2019 was “Camp: Notes on Fashion” and celebrates the newest exhibit which is inspired by Susan Sontag‘s 1964 essay that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”

I think Lady Gaga might have won with her theatrics that included he unraveling and revealing of not one but four looks by designer, with the assistance of a small army of flamboyant but meticulous handlers.

Cardi B’s presentation and actor Billy Porter’s were quite spectacular and so much so, I almost forgot previous mega head turners Rihanna, Beyoncé, Madonna and third-time mom-to-be Blake Lively were conspicuously missing.

My fave looks were by women who are not yet moms (per this is a celebrity pregnancy blog so they focus is on moms)

First was singer and Endgame actress Hailee Steinfield

My second fave was Lupita Nyong’o who is stunning!

And of course, we saw lots of the celebrity moms we have featured on Bellyitch who each brought their total A game to the party and did it up right!

I am proud of myself for having the institution memory to have been able to recognize all of these beautiful moms without reading the caption to see who they are. Woot.

Teacher Appreciation Week: Inexpensive Gift Ideas

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week.

Parents may want to use this opportunity to give their child’s teacher a nice gift as a thank you for the school year so far.

In a lot of school systems, it may be not permissible to spend too much money on a gift so I curated a guide of 9 unique and thoughtful novelty gifts, all under $20, that would put a smile on the face of your child’s fave teacher and may be used in the classroom for years to come, even…

  1. Tears of My Students Gift Mug – $13.49

This funny mug by Tekoware is microwave and dishwasher safe and is a clever take off of the “tears” drinking-memes in the Internet e.g. drinking the tears of someone who is whining or complaining. Typically, it is short for “save it! I’m not falling for it.” A teacher with a good sense of humor would appreciate this mug.

2. Math Wall Clock – $15.95

This unique clock signals the time with a simple math equation that equals the number that would ordinarily be on an average clock. This novel gift would warm your kid’s math teacher’s face and make a fun classroom ornament.

3. Handmade leather Journal –  $16.99

Any teacher would appreciate this eco-friendly handmade leather cover journal by The Great Indian Bazaar. It is not lined so it can be used to jot down notes, doodle, sketch, as a recipe book, organizer or travel journal. It is unisex and can be given to a male or female teacher. It has an old world charm to it.

4. Camera print Pillow – $9

The art or photography class teacher will just love this linen cotton covered pillow featuring an old time camera on it. The 100%  natural blend pillow by Monkeysell is 18×18 shaped and is a delightful and attractive home decor item that can also be used to support teacher’s back during a long or late afternoon class.

5. Field Notes -$12.95

Whether it’s a teacher retreat or planning day or a continuing education lecture, every teacher needs to organize and chronicle her mental notes into some nice space. This 3-pack of field notes journals is perfect and functional. Show your fave teacher that you got her back!

6. Aloe Vera Eye Mask – $15.99

Though every teacher considers his/her students to be perfect angels, there is no doubt that s/he need some pampering and self-care time to decompress after challenging lesson or after grading 30 papers on the Gettysburg address. Phew!! Give her some eye relief with these aloe-vera eye gels that can be cool or hot.

7. Composition Notebook Tote – $18.00

The one thing that is on every school supply list every year is a composition book. And wouldn’t it be cute to gift your teacher this 100% cotton tote made of a print like that same book? The company “Out of Print” makes this bag and gives to charity one bag for each bag purchased. Your gift to teacher would also give back! How perfect! With this gift, your teacher will be the talk of the next teacher convention or retreat!

8. Funny Socks 5-pack –  $19.99

These fun socks by Socks n Socks come with science, nature studies and other school subject themes printed on them. They are a zany but fun gift for any teacher. They have spandex in them and can fit anyone wearing men shoe size 7 -12.

9. Peace and Tranquility Candle – $13.00

During the busy school  year,  your teacher may not realize sitting in a room while a scented aromatherapy candle burns may be just the therapy s/he needs after a rough semester. You can come to your fave teacher’s rescue by gifting her/him Chesapeake Bay candle company’s Peace and Tranquilty candle from its Mind and Body collection. If permissible, teach can burn this candle after recess to get rid of that gym class funk! ha!

Duchess Meghan Markle Delivered Her Son at Home, It Appears

UPDATE: ET source confirms the baby was born at home.

Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle and Prince Harry on the birth of their first child, a baby boy.

Kensington Palace announced the news via Twitter today.

“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex was safely delivered of a son at 0526hrs,” the Palace tweeted. “The baby weighs 7lbs 3oz and The Duke of Sussex was present for the birth.”

Adding:

The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Jane Fellowes, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Earl Spencer have been informed and are delighted with the news.

The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage

Her Royal Highness and the baby are both doing well.”

As suspected, it appears like she had a home birth. The timing of the delivery with news that Markle’s mom is with her and the baby makes me think she indeed had a homebirth.

The Daily Mail  had previously reported that Meghan’s current top choice is a home birth led by a midwife.

Sources stressed that Harry and Meghan, who are expecting their first child within weeks, have not ruled out a hospital delivery because a woman having a baby over the age of 35 is at an increased risk of premature birth or the need for an epidural or caesarean.

But a friend in America said the duchess – who still practices yoga daily and has ‘sailed’ through her pregnancy – is in extremely good health and sees no reason why she could not enjoy a safe delivery in the privacy of the cottage.

‘It is her favoured choice,’ the source said, ‘but it obviously depends on how things are nearer the time.’

Congrats! We have a Baby Duke!

Harry announced the news to the public:

“It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever have possibly imagined. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension,” he said. “But, we’re both absolutely thrilled. And so grateful to all the love and support from everybody out there. It’s been amazing. So we just wanted to share this with everybody.”

“The baby’s a little bit overdue so we’ve had a little bit of time to think about it. That’s the next bit,” he said of choosing a name. “For us, I think we’ll be seeing you guys in probably two days time as planned, as a family. To be able to share it with you guys and so everyone can see the baby.”

Harry ended his sweet remarks by once again praising Meghan and saying their baby boy is “to die for.”

“I haven’t been in many births. This is definitely my first birth,” he quipped. “But it was amazing. Absolutely incredible. And, as I said, I’m so incredibly proud of my wife. And, as every father and parent would ever say, your baby’s absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to die for. So I’m just over the moon.”

Shahs of Sunset’ MJ Javid Almost Died Giving Birth, Husband Said

Bravo TV reality TV star of Shahs of Sunset Mercedes “MJ” Javid had the most difficult road to baby and recently revealed to her Instagram followers that she misses pregnancy!

Wow!

On April 17, the real estate mogul welcomed her son, Shams Francis Feight, who she named after her late father who she recently lost, as documented on the show.

But it was a nightmarish road to pregnancy and delivery which started with several surgeries to remove uterine polyps in preparation for an embryo transfer before eventually successfully conceiving her first child through in vitro fertilization (IVF).

Her new husband Tommy Feight shared the news of the very scary birthing experience and about how he felt he almost lost his wife after she gave birth.

“The night my son was born was the worst night of my life,” he revealed on an Instagram story, E! reports. “My wife had a ton of complications. She was in surgery for like five hours — they didn’t tell me nothing. But they are amazing at Cedars. They saved her life.”

A source to E! said: “Tommy had a very emotional night. The delivery was extremely difficult and [Tommy] was very worried as he couldn’t hear from doctors for nearly 4 hours.”

Javid had to remain in the ICU and couldn’t even see her son for hours after giving birth, Feight revealed.

“Coming home from the hospital with a healthy baby boy is a dream come true. We are enjoying every single moment together,” Javid told E! News exclusively. “Being a mom is an incredible experience so far, and Baby Shams is so precious.”

She continued, “I’m on the mend and ready to embark on this new chapter in life. We look forward to taking our first stroller outing and Tommy and I are in awe of what we have created together. A little spa & massage would be great, although for now, I cannot stand being away from baby for a second.”

Even with the drama of having a complication mid pregnancy which required her to be on bed rest for weeks until delivery, she managed to get permission to do a maternity shoot and even went tanning before giving birth.

Feight spilled that drip of tea.

“She looks like the Aztec sun from ankles up,” he said. “Ankles down she looks like she jogged back here from the jungle.”

True MJ style! Cannot hate.

The couple have been completing transparent throughout their road to parenthood even sharing videos on Instagram and fighting back trolls who accused her of faking the pregnancy and really having a surrogate.

“I knew this was going to happen, so many emotions going through me these days,” she confided to her followers in a behind-the-scenes video of her maternity shoot. “I miss being pregnant!”

Cannot still believe she said she missed being pregnant after such a journey but God Bless her for savoring and being humble and grateful for the opportunity and moment to experience something a lot of women want but cannot, especially at an advanced maternal age of 46.

Before Pick A Summer Camp: 10 Things To Consider

It’s kinda late right now to be finding a Summer Camp for your child but you might as well know the ten ways to choose the perfect camp for your kids anyway.

  1. Find Out Where Their Friends Are Going – It’s a good idea to start your journey by finding out where your child’s friends will be camping – and don’t send them there. In addition to depriving your child of a valuable opportunity to make new friends and learn to socialize with a new peer group, you’ll also be ensuring that the same cliques and social hierarchies follow them. Though kids might protest initially, they’ll quickly come to appreciate the clean slate.
  2. Look Into Club-Sponsored Camps – For kids who are active in scouting programs or clubs, it might be a good idea to check into summer camps sponsored by those programs. The tenets and aims of the camp will be familiar to kids who participate in the same activities at home, giving them the chance to meet new people while still retaining that sense of familiarity.
  3. Take Special Interests Into Account – Budding thespians might get more enjoyment out of a theater camp, while aspiring athletes are much more likely to have the time of their life at a sports camp. Tailoring the summer camp experience to your child’s interests is one of the best ways to ensure that they have a great vacation.
  4. Research Special Needs Camps – Kids with learning disabilities or special needs are not automatically excluded from the sleep away camp experience. There are many summer camps created solely for special needs kids; with a bit of research, you’re sure to find the perfect fit for your special kid.
  5. Decide if Religion is a Factor – For families that strongly emphasize religion, summer camps with a similar emphasis might be the best fit. Speaking with a clergy member can help you find great religious camps, as can a bit of online research.
  6. Location, Location, Location – One of the most important things to consider when looking at summer camps is the location of your favorites. Families on a budget might have a hard time making parents’ weekends after incurring travel expenses to accompany their child to and from camp.
  7. Make Visits For Next Year – If possible, start scouting summer camps the year before your child will be attending. Visiting while the camp is in session is a great way to get an idea of how things will be the following year, whereas an off-season tour will only showcase facilities.
  8. Consider the Financial Implications – Private camps can run well into the thousands for an eight week session, while non-profits like YMCA camps and others of their ilk are considerably cheaper. Don’t be fooled by a hefty price tag, either; some of the highest-rated camps in the country are lower cost non-profits. In the case of summer camps, it’s not always a “get what you pay for” situation.
  9. Examine First Aid and Infirmary Facilities – Kids get hurt. From daredevil stunts to simple carelessness, bumps and bruises are just part of the territory. Because of this fact, you’ll want to make sure that there are adequate first aid and infirmary facilities on-site, and that medical help can be quickly secured in the event of an emergency.
  10. Let Your Child Play a Part in the Decision-Making Process – Having a conversation with your child about their wants and needs from a summer camp experience is an important part of the process, as well. Listen to and consider each of your child’s points before choosing a place for him or her to spend the majority of their summer vacation.

There are so many things to consider when choosing a summer camp that the task can be overwhelming for many parents. Taking the process one step at a time, looking at each camp from every angle is the best way to be sure about your decision. Because it can be quite time-consuming, it’s also a good idea to begin your search far in advance to avoid last-minute snap decisions made out of desperation.

The American Camp Association accredits summer camps and is a great place to begin your summer camp search.

Country Singer Kane Brown and Wife Expecting First Child

Country music artist Kane Brown and his wife Katelyn announced their pregnancy news on Instagram last month and appeared in public for the first time on the red carpet to this week’s Billboard Awards.

Kaetelyn wore a criss cross crop top under a powder blue suit but you could barely see a bump, perhaps because she is not yet three months along, the traditional time people tell or she is just that thin, the bump is yet to be revealed.

Brown opened up about seeing the heartbeat for the first time.

“We went to the hospital and actually checked the heartbeat and … we got very more emotional,” Brown told Extra. “I was getting nervous going down the elevator and once she actually saw the baby … it makes it so much more real, so we were both excited.”

Brown and Jae announced their pregnancy in April, and Jae has, at least so far, had a relatively easy pregnancy.

“She hasn’t gotten any sickness or anything,” Brown divulged. “She feels nauseous every once in a while, but she’s been great other than that.”

Jae previously shared an emotional video of her first ultrasound.

He shared the news on his Insta as well.

“It’s been so hard keeping this a secret!!!!! But the KB’S ARE GONNA BE PARENTS!!! KB3 ????? IM GONNA BE A DADDY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ” he captioned an ultrasound photo.

Congrats!

Spring Style: How to Wear a Crop Top In Your 40s

The weather, generally, is getting seasonally sunnier and nicer out which means it is time for open toed shoes, light weight clothing, pastel and warmer colors…and more revealing clothing.

One trend that has come and gone and come again has been the crop top. It’s not a style that everyone can pull off becasue a lot of us moms do not have the same tight tummy we had before kids.

Fear not, there are ways that some of us can pull off this trend without even having to reveal much if none of our tummy at all!

Wear it in a dark color with a high waist maxi skirt with a fun print like Catherine Summers a few years back in the Not Dressed Lamb blog because it draws attention to the print and reveals just a wee bit of the waist.

I like Ivy Park Circle Knit Cropped Long-Sleeve ($58) or one of these:

Or have no skin at all showing by wearing a belt with it or wear high waisted pants so high they cover your tummy the way  Cate Blanchett wore to a couple of red carpet events.

Or you can say whatevs and pair them with high waisted sweatpants like I did this way, but go with a solid hue for a monochromatic effect.

Whatever you want, have it your way!

Blake Lively is Expecting Baby #3

One of our Bellyitch faves Blake Lively is expecting Baby #3!

The actress surprised fans during the New York City premiere of her husband Ryan Reynold‘s new movie Pokémon Detective Pikachu.

She made it official by placing her hands on her growing bump while posing on the Red Carpet during the event arrivals.

The couple are already parents to daughters 4-year old James who they welcomed in 2014 and 2-year old daughter Inez.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and Gossip Girl alum wore a shimmery yellow bump hugging dress with a nice split to the event held at the Military Island in Times Square on May 2, 2019.

I love that instead of a purse, she accessorized with a bejeweled Poke ball.

The very private couple do a great job of shielding their little ones from the public eye and in fact, we’ve only seen them when Reynolds got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Congrats!

Mother’s Day: 10 Free or Inexpensive Things To Get For Mom

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 13 and as it is getting down to the wire, some may be racking their brains looking for ideas and suggestions on what to get mom, or the mom-to-be in their lives.

Here are 10 simple and mainly free or inexpensive ideas:

  1. Do-nothing day—plenty of moms would love to spend a day not having to lift a finger or spend the day doing just what they want to do. So give your mom a card that tells her she is entitled to a day off—and be sure to honor it!
  2. Spa day—many spas offer Mother’s Day specials for massages and other services, so call around to find the best deal.
  3. A clean car—Mom’s car can get downright disgusting after shuttling kids around all the time. So grab the kids and have them help you wash the car.
  4. Customized necklace—May isn’t a good month to buy jewelry because stores often hike prices in anticipation of Mother’s Day. However, you can find affordable necklaces with charms that can be engraved with children’s names online at Etsy.com.
  5. Photo mug—plenty of companies create mugs with photos on them for about $11. This gift is ideal for grandmothers who appreciate a creative way to show off pictures of the grandkids.
  6. Plants and flowers for the yard—rather than a bouquet, buy a potted plant, flowering bush or tree that will last for years. Or let Mom buy plants for the garden and then plant them for her.
  7. Photo album—most of our photos are now digital and we rarely print them out. So print out your pictures, put them in an album and let mom enjoy looking at them the old-fashioned way.
  8. A clean house—give Mom a break from her daily chores and do them for her (the way she would want them done). Wash the dishes, do the laundry, sweep the floors and make the beds.
  9. Frame the kids’ art—Moms will surely get a few pieces of handcrafted art from the kids for Mother’s Day. Make it easy for her to display and store them with a frame that lets you do both!
  10. Make a donation in Mom’s name—for the Mom that already has everything, make a donation in her name to her favorite charity or motherhood-related organization.
  11. Bonus idea—Take the time to sit down with your mom and ask her to share family stories that you can record or write down in a journal that can be shared with other family members.
