Win a Baltic Amber Healing Teething Necklace ($60 Value Giveaway)

I’m a firm believer in holistic and Eastern medicine and certainly the power of stones crystals.   Ancient civilizations have utilized the power of crystals to release mental, physical and spiritual blockages which are thought to also facilitate the free flow of throughout the body. On a cellular level, our bodies and quartz crystal are both made up of mineral silicon-dioxide. Because of this, we are naturally receptive to the vibrations of crystals as they transmit, reflect, store light and receive energy. When crystals and stones are placed directly on your body, they have a powerful vibratory effect that surges from the stone or crystal to you. According to the law of physics, thoughts direct energy and energy follows thought. The stones or crystals are thought to be a tool to help the thoughts of our consciousness connect with our body

I recently learned about this thing called Baltic amber, which is hardened resin from now-extinct pine trees that resided in the Baltic region millions of years ago. Amber from the Baltic region contains roughly 8-10% succinic acid, which is known to have analgesic qualities.

There is science to it too: In 1886, the Nobel Prize-winning Robert Koch analyzed succinic acid, which is the active ingredient in Baltic amber. He concluded that the acid had a very positive effect on humans, by strengthening our immune systems and serving as a healing aid. Some of its users have claimed it helps cure regular headaches, menstrual cramps, teething pains, joint or muscle inflammation. Hmmmm.

Today, there are companies that have turned these amber into jewelry that can be worn as jewelry. A few years ago, I discovered Larimar Stone which has similar qualities so it was great to learn about a new method.

The creators of the Baltic Teething Amber Necklace for example markets to families and to parents as a teething bead but the company doesn’t recommend babies actually but the amber necklace for babies beads in their mouths or for it to be worn around the neck or outside the view of parents because of the choking hazard. For that reason, I wonder whether it is safe to be worn on the neck or a baby’s wrist.  Perhaps the ankle. Older kids who will listen to and heed to strict instructions to not put them in their mouths are probably a better market.

Reportedly,  your body heat activates the succinic rich oils to be absorbed releasing the healing properties. That’s quite a claim! I’d be willing to test it out for myself to see if it works before giving it to a baby or a small child.

Do you want to try one out? The makers of Baltic Amber Teething Necklace are giving away three necklaces (valued $19.99 each) to our readers. We will pick three winners! Many ways to Enter. Contest will run for the next 10 Days!  Good luck!

Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin Is About to Be a Dad!

Now that Alex Ovechkin has won his first Stanley Cup after over a decade playing for the Washington Capitals, he will soon be able to check “dad” off on his list of accomplishments.

His wife Anastasia Shubskaya, a former model, shared the news on her Instagram page hours after her husband and his team clinched the win against the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

“We did it,” she wrote in Russian alongside a photo of herself standing next to her husband, cradling her baby bump while Ovechkin, 32, proudly displays the huge cup.

“My hero,” she added after tacking on three strong-arm emojis and the hashtags, “#stanleycup,” “#letsgocaps” and “#wedidit.”

A rep for Ovechkin confirmed to PEOPLE mag that the couple are expecting a baby together. The couple met when he was 25 and she was just 14 years old, according to a Russian gossip site. They wed in 2016 in a very low key private ceremony.

That site also quoted her as saying she gave up her modeling career to stay by her husband’s side.

“I found a love at an early age and I don’t have to earn my living, – said the girl – I was studying to become a producer, but here, I just can not develop my skills… If I fly to Los Angeles – my husband will be left alone. The wife should be at her husband’s side”.

Okay now. Congrats!

VIRAL: Dad of the Year Goes To ‘Ballerina Dad’ (VIDEO)

Fathers relentlessly work for their families to ensure everyone is happy and content. More often than not, they are also a shield to protect their kids from any harm and help hold their hands to sail through the difficult times. One such father was crowned as “best dad of the year” on social media for his adorable gesture to help his little girl perform in front of an audience.

In a footage going viral, a doting dad rushed to the stage to help his daughter – Bella, who was fighting stage fear. Initially, he tried to give her company from the wings but when that didn’t work, he wasn’t shy to match steps with her with utmost finesse and style during her first dance recital. What melted many hearts was how he went onto the stage with another infant in his arms

In Motion School of Dance posted video of the event to Facebook where it went viral with more than 400,000 views.

“In Motion Dads are the best,” the school said. “Sometimes, you simply need your dad on stage to help bring out your inner ballerina!”

Here is How to Reheat Breast milk the Right Way

Bellyitch Rewind

The World Health Organization asserts that “breast milk is the ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants,” encouraging new mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months of life. When new moms work outside of the home, however, many opt to pump and store their breast milk so that nannies and other childcare providers can continue providing their child with the most nutritious possible food source during this crucial time.

These caregivers who are not the mom are are then tasked with the responsibility of properly handling the bottled breast milk, and understanding the best methods for storage.

Breast Milk Storage Information for Nursing Mothers

The La Leche League International, a leading breastfeeding advocacy group, suggests that breast milk be stored in two to four ounce amounts in order to minimize waste by either freezing or refrigeration. While frozen milk remains fresh for up to six months in a deep freezer, refrigerated milk used within eight days retains more of its original anti-ineffective properties.

Human breast milk that has been pumped can be stored at room temperature for up to six hours safely, but mothers are advised to refrigerate or chill their milk as soon as possible after pumping. Containers made of glass or hard plastic free from bisphenol A (BPA) with tight-fitting tops are ideal for storage after being washed in hot, soapy water and allowed to air dry after being thoroughly rinsed. There are also specially-designed freezer bags commercially available, though traditional food-storage bags aren’t recommended due to the possibility of rupture or leakage. Containers designated for freezer storage should not be filled to the brim, as the milk will expand as it solidifies.

Containers of pumped milk should be dated in order to facilitate use of older milk first, with the child’s name also included on the label if the pumped breast milk is intended for use in a daycare setting.

Preparation and Handling Information for Childcare Providers

Before handling stored breast milk to prepare a bottle, nannies and childcare providers should carefully and thoroughly wash their hands to prevent contamination. Frozen milk may be thawed either in the refrigerator or by immersing the container in warm water; using a microwave to either thaw or heat the breast milk is strongly discouraged. This method can both destroy valuable nutrient content and create hot spots in the bottle that can scald the delicate tissues of an infant’s mouth. Bottles microwaved for too long may also explode under intense heat, wasting the milk and creating quite a mess.

Once breast milk has been thawed, it should never be re-frozen. Bottles that a baby doesn’t finish should be discarded, rather than saved; the risk of contamination is very real, despite the antibiotic nature of expressed human breast milk. For this reason, nursing mothers are urged to store milk in two to four ounce containers to minimize waste. Frozen milk should be kept near the back of the freezer, because the temperature tends to be the most constant in this area.

Human breast milk can vary in color and consistency depending on the nursing mother’s diet, so color isn’t typically an indicator of freshness. The Mayo Clinic also reports that breast milk that has been frozen and later thawed may have a different consistency, color, and odor than freshly pumped milk. Additionally, breast milk can often separate into two distinct layers of milk and cream; this separation is also not an indication that milk isn’t fresh. To reincorporate the milk and cream, simply shake the storage container gently or swirl it carefully until it’s combined again.

Breast milk can be warmed for feeding by placing the bottle in a bowl of warm water, or in a pan of water that has been heated but is not sitting on the stove. Test the temperature of milk before feeding it to their small charges to prevent burns and scalds due to overheated bottles. Commercially-available bottle warmers may also be effective tools, though microwave ovens are, once again, strongly discouraged.

Good luck to you all!

Study: A Blood Test Can Now Predict A Baby’s Due Date Just Like An Ultrasound

Researchers have learned of a way to predict a woman’s due date using a blood test!

In an article published in the journal Science  on June 7th, scientists studied 31 expectant mothers and were able to accurately peg their due dates roughly half the time by sequencing nine types of circulating RNA in the blood.

Miraculously, this test was about as reliable as using ultrasound which currently is the way women learn their predicted due dates. It also enabled the researchers to predict, in most cases, which of the high-risk pregnancies would end prematurely.

“Obviously the numbers [of participants] are very small but the results are very impressive,” Andrew Shennan, an obstetrics professor at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London who was not involved in the study, told The Guardian, adding that such a blood test would be especially useful in developing countries where ultrasound is not readily available.

The researchers were able to zero in on the blood transcripts known to originate in the placenta whose levels corresponded with pregnancy progression in based on blood samples submitted each week by moms-to-be in Denmark who submitted a blood sample each week throughout their pregnancies.

The results were so accurate that it predicted accurately within 14 days of a woman’s due date 45 percent of the time. Compare that to an ultrasound which gets it right 48 percent of the time, according to the authors.

To see if they could pick out preterm from full-term pregnancies, the researchers scanned all the free-floating RNAs in women’s blood and found 38 had levels that were distinctive for each group. Using combinations of particular transcripts, they were able to pick out six of eight pregnancies that ended early and misclassified one out of 26 that went full-term, among a subset of women who were known to be at high risk for prematurity.

CNN reports that a paper published in the Journal of Perinatology last month also describes a test to predict prematurity. The study involved 400 women and 25 biomarkers.

“Our test was able to predict 80.3% of women who went on to have any preterm birth, at 15 to 20 weeks gestation,” Laura Jelliffe-Pawlowski, an associate professor and director of Precision Health and Discovery at the University of California, San Francisco’s Preterm Birth Initiative and coauthor of the study told CNN.

If the test ultimately makes it to mass market, it would cost between $50 to $100, but it is understood that the test should be conducted on more diverse women.

Anthony Bourdain, Kate Spade: A Message For Those Contemplating Suicide and Wanting to Help Others In Distress

Today, we learned of the passing of author, chef, cooking ambassador, storyteller and overall amazing person Anthony Bourdain to suicide. His death bookends a week when we got wind of the tragic passing of designer Kate Spade also to suicide.

Earlier this month, famed Swedish DJs Avicci also took his own life. They join the millions of other non famous people or lesser known who succumb to their inner turmoil, or the effects of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or other mental anguish and issues.

If there is one thing that can be learned from these deaths, it is that depression and mental illness have no one look.  Those suffering may wear a mask or normally or  a smile , while suffering silently.

Depression can be concealed, and can be happening to those near and dear to us, right under our noses.

You never know what demon or issues people are dealing with, so check in on your friends, family and neighbors once in a while.

Look for Warning Signs. Help Someone.

So it’s a good time to remind ourselves to reach out to those personally around us if we notice mood and behavior changes, letting their appearance go, dropping out of school or hobbies, avoiding friends, not sleeping well, or a big change in mood, reach out. Let them know someone cares and you are there for them.

If there has been a life altering episode, or another situation that leads to extreme emotional stress. Heed to warning signs that someone may be suffering with depression.

If  you have had suicidal thoughts, Please Stay.

If you are reading this, and you have had suicidal thoughts, and are dealing with so much sadness, loneliness or other anxiety that you feel you cannot cope any longer with the pain, please remember that “this too shall pass.”

“When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one which has opened for us,” Alexander Graham Bell famously said.

An unknown author quipped, “Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain.”

It may be really hard to come to grip with the grande scheme of life and your perspective may be skewed right now because of how you are feeling, but trust me when I say, there is a light and hope and happiness waiting for you on earth.

Find someone to talk to and if you don’t feel you can open up with some there is always the National suicide prevention hotline  for US residents (Internationally for others) where you can get help and  guidance, and perhaps a referral to some place where you can get personal, confidential counseling at no cost too.

There is good and beauty everywhere.

Try to concentrate on the positive things about yourself and your life. Make plans this weekend to get away and have some fun. Splurge on a manicure or facial. Enjoy the weather and if it’s raining, check out some movies you’ve never seen. There are so many out there you haven’t watched.

You cannot end it all now. (smile)

Live for another day. Survive this.

For those who want to know how to help someone, here are some tips from the National Suicide Prevention organization for you to keep in mind.

Know the Risk Factors

Risk factors are characteristics that make it more likely that someone will consider, attempt, or die by suicide. They can’t cause or predict a suicide attempt, but they’re important to be aware of.

•Mental disorders, particularly mood disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and certain personality disorders

•Alcohol and other substance use disorders

•Hopelessness

•Impulsive and/or aggressive tendencies

•History of trauma or abuse

•Major physical illnesses

•Previous suicide attempt(s)

•Family history of suicide

•Job or financial loss

•Loss of relationship(s)

•Easy access to lethal means

•Local clusters of suicide

•Lack of social support and sense of isolation

•Stigma associated with asking for help

•Lack of healthcare, especially mental health and substance abuse treatment

•Cultural and religious beliefs, such as the belief that suicide is a noble resolution of a personal dilemma

•Exposure to others who have died by suicide (in real life or via the media and Internet)

Know the Warning Signs

Some warning signs may help you determine if a loved one is at risk for suicide, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, or seems related to a painful event, loss, or change. If you or someone you know exhibits any of these, seek help by calling the Lifeline.

  • Talking about wanting to die or to kill themselves
  • Looking for a way to kill themselves, like searching online or buying a gun
  • Talking about feeling hopeless or having no reason to live
  • Talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain
  • Talking about being a burden to others
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Acting anxious or agitated; behaving recklessly
  • Sleeping too little or too much
  • Withdrawing or isolating themselves
  • Showing rage or talking about seeking revenge
  • Extreme mood swings

CNN Reports:

When a high-profile person dies by suicide, the “celebrity-suicide effect” can lead to a rise in copycat deaths. In the four months after Robin William’s took his own life in 2014, there was a 10% increase — almost 2,000 additional suicides — recorded.

There is already a rise in suicide rates in the US, increasing more than 25% since 1999. Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in 2015, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Suicide rates are also rising worldwide, with some one million people dying annually from suicide. The World Health Organization estimates a global suicide rate of one death every 40 seconds, which by 2020 they predict will increase to one every 20 seconds. If you or someone you know might be at risk of suicide, here are ways to help:
