Study: Babies Fed Solid Foods While Breastfeeding Stand and Walk Faster Than Strictly Breastfed Babies

Babies who were breastfeeding and fed solid foods rather than exclusively breastfed stand and walk faster than slightly faster times to standing and walking in full-term infants compared to infants exclusively breast fed, according to a new study.

Breastfeeding has long been known to provide health benefits to babies, including improved immune strength, lowered risk for asthma and allergies and more. A new study out of the University at Albany, however, found that it has no notable impact on motor development.

In the study  of 4,270 babies organized by feeding category (Breastfed exclusively (control group), Both breast and formula and Formula fed exclusively), the study found that breast milk provides nutrition and energy to babies in addition to providing hormones, growth factors, antibodies and long-chain fatty acids that aid in growth and development.

While these benefits are undisputed among experts, questions have remained as to what impact, if any, breast milk has on a children’s muscular development and their subsequent ability to hit milestones such as standing or walking.

Researchers Erin Bell, associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences in the School of Public Health, collaborated with University of Albany graduate and pediatrician Scott Bello as well as Kara Michels, Akhgar Ghassabian, Sunni Mumford, Rajeshwari Sundaram and Edwina Yeung  as part of a larger Upstate KIDS Study,  of over  6,000 babies born to 5,000 mothers between 2008 and 2010 in the 57 counties of upstate New York.

The team had a particular interest in determining whether or not breastfeeding provided any motor-development advantages to pre-term babies, and because twins are often born pre-term, they also focused on twin infants.

“Although breastfeeding does not notably speed along motor development, it’s important to note that it doesn’t slow it down either, and mothers who are able to breastfeed should still consider it because of the non-motor development benefits,” Bell said. “Additionally, more research is warranted on the subject of feeding patterns and motor-development milestones, particularly in pre-term infants” said Bell.

Cushnie et Ochs is My new Celeb Fave Designer Label

It was only a week ago that I discovered the long-established line  Cushnie et Ochs when I saw Khloe Kardashian wearing one of its designs, the Black Pyramid Pencil Dress cut out dress on an appearance of Jimmy Kimmel Live about a month ago.

“Since launching in 2008, the line has offered a solid selection of structured, cut-out, body-con dresses, landed in retailers like Bergdorf Goodman and Net-A-Porter, and received the Ecco Domani Award, a CFDA Swarovski Award nomination, and a finalist spot in the CFDA/VogueFashion Fund,” Refinery 29 reports.

The label is a fave of stars like Selena Gomez, Camila Cabello, Teigen and Michelle Obama and is known for its intricate cut outs and asymmetrical lines and I have been exploring some of their designs and find them to be quite flattering and chic.

And I learned I am not alone in the new discovery. A popular fashion site described the label as coming out of nowhere and exploding on the scene! Read about it here then check out some of their other looks we like below:

Ne-Yo’s Wife Crystal Smith Criticized For Negative Description of Son’s Hair Texture

After describing her child’s hair negatively and praising her own fine textured hair as “blessed” “Hawaiian Silk”, Internet users gathered second-time mom-to-be Crystal Smith all the way up to school her on her outdated attitude towards kinkier African textured hair.

“So my son wasn’t blessed with Mommy’s ‘Hawaiian silk’ as my sister likes to say,” Bossip reported the second-time mom-to-be captioning an Instagram post of a photo of herself and her son. “Can anyone suggest some good products or moisturizers? Nothing I’ve tried will help the dryness. His hair seems to soak up everything instantly.”

Following the outrage from followers and fans over the since-deleted tweets, Smith declared her intentions to convert the learning moment into a business opportunity in an Instagram stories post, vowing to create a hair care line for children of mixed race heritage.

“Thank you guys for the negativity, because once again I’m going to channel it into something positive,” she can be heard in the social media share taken in her car. “I am now in the process of creating a hair care line for mixed children … so thank you once again.”

Ok. Good luck with that, Mrs. Smith. The couple married shortly before welcoming their first child, son, Shaffer Chimere Smith, Jr. Ne-Yo has a 7-year old daughter Madilyn and 6-year old-son Mason (Irish Twins) with his ex-girlfriend, and our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Monyetta Shaw.

The Smiths’ are expecting their second child later this year.

How to Fake the Pregnancy Glow (STEP by STEP)

We share the secret of getting a beautiful pregnancy glow out of a bottle!

Theoretically pregnancy is meant to make you glow, its a biological ‘fact’. The increased amount of blood that’s circulating around your body is meant to give you a beautifully flushed look and as your skin retains more moisture and produces more sebum you’re meant to be glowing with a luminous dewy sheen – sound familiar?

Don’t worry if not, the combination of nausea, lack of sleep and sensitive skin experienced by many mums-to-be doesn’t lend itself well to natural radiance. Thankfully its easy to fake it – we explain how to get that ‘movie star’ pregnancy glow and only you need know its not real!

Step 1 – The Start

The first place to start is on the inside, drinking 8 – 10 glasses of water a day will do wonders for clearing your skin and helping to flush out water retention too. A good prenatal vitamin combined with a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruit, vegetables and omega rich foods will help too.

Step 2 – The Cleanser

Whether you suffer from dry, normal or oily skin its important to wash your face thoroughly twice a day. Using a gentle exfoliater such as Botanics In Shower Facial Polish will help to remove dead skin cells and improve circulation, banishing dull skin for good.

For best results apply in circular motions with your fingertips and rinse off with lukewarm water. Patting rather than rubbing your face dry can also help prevent blotchy skin and spider veins as you’re less likely to break the tiny capillaries that sit just under the surface of your skin.

Step 3 – The Moisturizer

Using a good moisturizer after cleansing is a must for gorgeous glowing skin. Massaging a fragrance free, sensitive moisturizer such as OZ Naturals Facial Moisturizer  into your face and neck will really help to give your complexion a lift without irritating your skin. If possible it’s best to go for a moisturizer that contains an SPF factor to protect your skin against the sun’s harmful rays especially as this can also help to reduce the likelihood of chloasma (brown patches) developing.

Step 4 – The Base

Blend a light base into your skin with your fingertips. It’s specially designed to conceal dark circles and skin imperfections with minimal effort so you needn’t spend hours blending for that flawless finish. Tinted moisturizers and foundations like stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer SPF contain light reflecting particles are also great for giving that dewy, smooth finish we all wish we had naturally.

Step 5 – The Blush

Recreate that gorgeous flushed look and perk up a grey complexion with a swirl of pink blush on the apples of your cheeks. A slightly shimmery, rosy color is always a good bet as it fakes a really healthy glow in an instant. I like Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick because it accommodates all complexions.

Step 6 – The Highlighter

Blending a peach toned highlighter along your cheek and brow bones will really help to lift your look and mimic that pregnancy sheen in seconds. You only need to use a dot and you’ll be able to recreate that ‘slept like a baby look’ on the sly. MAC’s Primed for Perfection Prep + Prime Highlighter brings a soft, sheer wash of color to the skin and goes on smoothly.

STEP 7 – THE MASCARA

A sensitive mascara in black/brown will be gentler and more flattering on tired eyes. Curl your eyelashes first for a really wide awake look. You can’t go wrong with the old drug store fave, Maybeline’s Great Lash that usually runs under $5!

Step 8 – The Lips

To top off your gorgeously glowy look a sheer lipstick is a must. Go for a shade that’s as close to your natural lip color as possible as this will really help to finish your ‘natural’ look. Clarins Instant Light Natural Lip is a light gel that has a plumping effect.

So, now you’ve faked radiant, glowing skin all you need to do is smile and pretend that you feel as gorgeous as you look!

10 Coffee Facts To Know Before Your Next Sip, For Preggers Too

Coffee is a unique beverage in that you either love it or you hate it. Some people swear by it as a means to wake up in the morning. Others drink coffee throughout the day to keep them going. However, whether you love it or hate it, there are some things that you may not know about coffee, that you would learn at a Kimbo barista course. Here are some interesting facts for you to ponder.

  1. Where Does Coffee Come From? Coffee only grows in certain climates, namely the ones nearest the equator along what is known as the “Bean Belt.” Hawaii is the only state in the U.S. that grows coffee, known as Kona coffee, while Brazil produces 30% of the world’s coffee. The second leading producer of coffee is Columbia. However, more than 53 countries grow coffee worldwide.
  2. The Coffee Plant. It is arguable whether to call what coffee grows on a bush or a tree, but either way, the coffee bean does not just grow off a branch by itself. It is actually a green seed inside a berry. The seed is removed, roasted and then packaged as coffee beans. The berry from which a coffee bean comes from is comparable to a cherry. The two species of coffee plant that are used for consumption are the Arabica and the Robusta. One coffee tree yields approximately one pound of coffee each year.
  3. How Many Calories Are You Consuming? Black coffee has no calories. That’s right! No calories! The way calories add up is what you put in with your coffee. With the options of cream, sugar and syrups, the calories can add up quickly. Keep that in mind if you are trying to cut down your calorie intake. You don’t need to stop drinking coffee altogether, just hold back on the extras you put into it. Thirty million people in the U.S. purchase specialty coffee drinks each day.
  4. Caffeine: Good or Bad? Caffeine is one of the defining characteristics of coffee. For those of you who have heartburn problems, you might want to cut down on your coffee intake or switch over to decaf, because caffeine is known for increasing heartburn symptoms. However, beware of decaf because it is not completely caffeine free, it’s more of a reduced level of caffeine that can still add up if you drink too many cups of it. On the other hand, the caffeine is also cited as being beneficial for increased thought flow.
  5. National Coffee Day. National Coffee Day is held on September 29. On that day, some businesses give away free or discounted cups of coffee. Some greeting card companies have even gone so far as to create National Coffee Day cards you can send to your friends or coworkers who are as addicted to coffee as you are.
  6. How Many Cups Do We Drink? More than 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed every year. Seattle is known for its coffee enthusiasts and the people who live there consume more coffee per capita than in any other city in the United States. The coffee industry makes approximately 60 billion dollars annually worldwide.
  7. Coffee vs. Water. Coffee is the second largest world commodity. The first is oil. It is also the second most popular drink in the world after water. More than half of the U.S. population over the age of 18 consumes at least one cup of coffee every morning. Women state that they drink coffee to relax and men tend to say that coffee helps them get their work done.
  8. Coffee-Scented Stamps. In 2001, Brazil produced a coffee-scented stamp to promote its commodity. It is said that the smell lasts between 3 to 5 years.
  9. To Freeze or Not to Freeze? Freezing coffee has been said to be a good way to keep it fresh, but as it turns out, the coffee bean easily extracts the flavors of things around it, making it susceptible to changing taste when stored in the freezer. Coffee grounds stay fresh for approximately two weeks outside of the freezer if stored in an airtight container. If stored next to fish or other smellier foods in the freezer, the coffee will adopt that taste, so even if it remains fresh longer, it won’t seem like it with the taste being skewed in that way.
  10. Can I Drink Coffee When I’m Pregnant? There has been research for and against the consumption of coffee during pregnancy. The current recommendation is to consume no more than 300 mg of caffeine each day, and that doesn’t just include coffee, but all sources of caffeine. Whether you are pregnant or not, caffeine intake should be limited. The fatal level of caffeine is the equivalent of 100 cups of coffee at approximately 100 to 200 mg per cup.

We’ve Come A Long Way Baby: Yoga Clothes for Little Girls (REVIEW)

Yippee, fitness fashion has come a long way so much so that yoga clothes for girls are a thing now.

As a big advocate for healthy living and living for the entire family, it was quite exciting for me to learn about Jill Yoga clothing. I am a believer in the value of purchasing quality and well-constructed clothing for the children, even at a higher price point because they last longer.

Both of those passions and beliefs intersect with the selection of Jill Yoga. The sports line of a successful Canadian apparel company sells colorful play, gym and yoga clothes for babies through teens, ages 2 through 16.

We were sent a sample to check out and review and I can attest to the fact that they were complete hit!

We got a couple pair of yoga pants and the very adorable and durable Funnel Neck Yoga Jacket which has an asymmetric Funnel wrap neck collar ($42) in a pretty pastel Galaxy print! The Cut And Sew Leggings we received came in solid grey print with patches of bright pink, black and galaxy print. ($34). They all are made of polyester and spandex and are completely machine washable. The  jacket comes with a thumb hole for colder temps. Both have reflective logo which are perfect when after dark.

My daughter Gigi wore the first set to a play and gym park birthday party of a friend of her older brother. She got tons of compliments on it from the older kids too. The pants and top were comfy and she did not overheat while bouncing on the trampoline, doing flips and battling other kids on the challenge balance beam.

Next up, she wore them while ice skating and while doing  yoga exercises. She remained flexible and comfy. The stitching in all the pieces we reviewed is tops and the quality noticeable. You can tell from feeling the fabric that the makers use high end’ish material. Is that a word? ha!

Anyway, I’m getting a few other pieces and some for myself as I learned that they sell clothing for women as well. For the moderate price point, the collection is a must-get because they look like they will last in the wash and can withstand the rough and tumble play and work out. Cool for little kids too!

Take this Post- Black Panther Viewing Old School Comics Quiz!

Now that you’ve seen the movie, you should be able to answer these questions. Can you do better than I did? I only got 11 out of 15 correct. Good Luck!
