Here are 10 Ways You Can Squeeze in A Work Out After Having Kids

Squeezing in a work out when you have children and a schedule that’s already overloaded isn’t easy. In addition, exercise may conjure up negative feelings because for some it implies long, strenuous hours in a musky gym. However, staying active is imperative to your physical, mental and emotional well-being, so finding convenient ways to sneak exercise into your daily routine is a must.

  1. Make Yourself a Priority – To be the best parent you can be, you have to make sure you take care of yourself, too. This means keeping your physical and mental health a priority. Setting aside time for yourself each day, even if it’s only 20 minutes, is a way of getting into a routine that will allow you to spend a little time on yourself.
  2. Just Breathe – Studies conducted by the Division of Internal Medicine at Aoyama Clinic in Niigata, Japan on the Senobi breathing technique and a 2006 American Heart Association-published study on pranayama yoga breathing exercises indicated that the way you breathe can affect your overall health and fitness. If you don’t have the time for a full work out, exploring these breathing techniques may be a helpful alternative.
  3. When in Doubt, Stretch it Out – If you’ve missed your window of making it to the gym, spending just 10 minutes on the floor stretching each evening before crawling into bed or first thing in the morning before you start your day is a way of keeping limber and increasing your range of motion.
  4. Play Dates Aren’t Just for the Kids – Set up play dates with other parents looking to incorporate exercise while supervising their little ones for the support and accountability of a dedicated work-out group. Brisk walks around the playground or jogging with the kids in strollers are options to buddy-up and stay motivated with other parents or your spouse.
  5. Baby Weight – Who said that lifting weights had to include heavy barbells and awkward gym equipment? Some post-natal yoga classes are even designed to incorporate your child as resistance weight. Try doing lunges across the front yard while carrying baby in your arms or doing a few exercises of your own during baby’s tummy time.
  6. Sleep it Off – In order to optimize the benefits of any exercise routine, you need to get plenty of rest. Find a routine that doesn’t leave you completely drained of energy or interfere with your parenting, but understand that sometimes it’s important to skip a work out and simply rest when you’re feeling exhausted.
  7. No Sweat – Sweating brings fresh, oxygenated blood to tissues and organs and helps rid the body of toxins. It’s also a sign of the body working, but you don’t have to spend hours on a treadmill to break a sweat. Incorporate exercise into your daily activities. Have a dance party with your kids in the living room. Jog alongside your kids when they go for a bike ride. When possible, park farther away at the store and by-pass the elevator for the stairs. These kinds of minor changes add up and over time you will start to notice these tasks becoming easier and easier.
  8. Mutual Investments – If running or walking is your favorite type of exercise, invest in a well-built stroller made to accommodate these kinds of activities. This will optimize your efforts and minimize your frustration when you’re on the go. Or, make it a family affair and purchase a video game console that offers games that use physical activities, such as dancing, as a way to connect with your kids and also get in a sweat session.
  9. Sharing is Caring – Take advantage of your gym membership. Many gyms today have on-site day care services so that moms and dads can take a break from parenting and get in a work-out. If you’re not a member of a gym, you might opt for finding parents that are willing to work out a schedule so each of you has time to get out and exercise.
  10. Stay Motivated – Keeping motivated is an issue for most, whether there are children involved or not. Making an effort to find things that motivate you can help you accomplish your goals. Music you groove to, gym classes you enjoy and people who inspire you are all great ways to keep you motivated. If you aren’t getting pleasure in what you’re doing or who you’re with, it is likely you will give up or quit. Instead, set goals and find inspiration to keep you going.

Truth be told, fitting exercise into your schedule when you have children all comes down to convenience and sustainability. If it’s not convenient, you’re not likely to continue with a particular regimen. Find an exercise program that fits your lifestyle and daily needs as a parent. Stay positive and don’t beat yourself up for missing a work out here and there. It’s possible to be a good parent and keep a fit lifestyle; you just have to find the right balance.

Viral: College Student Finishes Final In Labor and Delivery Bed

A College student in Missouri recently displayed what it means to be a super woman when a photo of her in bed working on a final while in her labor and delivery bed went viral.

“my mom took this pic & it’s the perfect explanation of my life,” Nayzia Thomas captioned a December 12th photo on Twitter of herself studying hard for an upcoming exam whilst waiting to deliver her son. “yes i’m about to have a baby, but final SZN ain’t over yet ??”

She was working on her dissociative identity project for her major’s final at Johnson County Community College in Kansas City, where Thomas is a student.

The diligent coed was determined to complete the assignment on time and avoid an “incomplete” grade even though it wasn’t due until the end of that week.

“It wasn’t due until the end of the week — finals week is Dec. 11 to tomorrow — but my goal was to try to have everything done before,” Thomas told Yahoo Lifestyle. “[I thought] ‘before all this gets crazy let me hurry up and finish this final.’”

By the way, did we say she also had to have a blood transfusion too?

Thomas’ post has received 131+K likes and over 27,000 retweets!

She shared a precious photo of her brand new son Anthony Alexander and husband Daivon Alexander in bed.

The share came with an update on how difficult the labor, delivery and post birthing of son Anthony was.

“update: on 12/12/17 we had a healthy baby boy,” Thomas revealed. “ However, I experienced major blood loss & my body went into shock post-delivery. It was very scary, but his father was right there to take over when I went unconscious. We are blessed! AND I’m finishing the semester w/ a 3.5 GPA!??“

“School is so important to me,” Thomas told Yahoo, adding that she stayed in classes until she was 39 weeks pregnant because of the importance of a college degree.

You can check the over 250 replies to the tweet to see all the supportive comments others have left including pics and stories of other hardworking and devoted pre-delivery students.

One other particularly amazing woman shared a photo of herself breastfeeding her newborn while still working on her final.

8 Expensive Gifts for that Mom Who has Everything (Gift Guide)

It can be tough to shop for the posh mom (an expectant or new) who has everything.

This one is for the dads and partners out there who were wondering what to give that woman who has everything.

1. Any mom would be happy to receive a Tiffany blue box, especially if in it there is a Tiffany & Co. Bezzet Yellow Diamond Ring in platinum with a yellow diamond in an 18k gold bezel setting. Cushioned in modified fancy intense yellow diamond, carat total weight 1.57 Get it at Tiffany’s for a mere $27,100.

A second runner up is the Halo Princess Cut Pendant With Micro Pave Diamonds In 14K White Gold which sells for $675.

It is a square center princess-cut diamond surrounded by a dazzling pavé-set diamonds.

2. If she is a bag freak and doesn’t already have one, you can get her the Hermes Matte Crocodile Birkin Bag which costs $120,000. These bags are named a after British singer and actress Jane Birkin. The clasp of this tote, which is actually made out of a crocodile, features 10 carats of white diamonds.

This bag isn’t even the most expensive! But a white Himalaya Birkin, handmade from Niloticus albino crocodile with more than 240 diamonds on its 18-karat-gold hardware tops the list at $371, 261.

Less expensive bags are available starting at $7,000 from the Vistiare Collective and there is no waiting list!

3. If that rich mom in your life loves sweet smells, you can get her one of the world’s most expensive bottle of perfume, Clive Christian No. 1 which sells for $2,150 for 2 ounces. The perfume is an extravagant combination of Indian jasmine, mandarin and sandalwood. Its bottle is handmade from lead crystal, while the neck is 24-karat gold-plated sterling silver, set with a solitaire.

But luckily for you, you can get a smaller 1.7 ounce vial at Nordstrom these days starting at about $880.00

4. If that spoiled rich mom has a sweet tooth, she may appreciate getting a dark chocolate truffle from Knipschildt. Wrapped in gold and handcrafted with 71% pure Ecuadorian dark chocolate, this mini indulgence rightfully earned the

title of most expensive truffle in the world. La Madeline au Truffle, $250 per truffle. With candy that rich, you have to cherish every calorie.

For $158, you can get an entire box for her box of 12 assorted chocolates from Knipschildt.

5. My favorite gift is anything spa related. If your mom has time on her schedule, book her a spa trip to the Hotel Victor in South Beach (which was bought out by the Hyatt) It offers guests of its penthouse suite the opportunity to lounge in a tub filled with 1,000 liters of pure Evian water, fuchsia, and orange Gerber daisies. Serena Williams was the first to try out the $5,000 bath, which is given in a 350-gallon infinity tub. You can also snack on smoked salmon lollipops, foie gras and chocolate as you bathe.

6. A monogrammed robe. For the first weeks after the baby is born, a new mom will be restless, sleepless, and anxious trying to navigate her new role, nurse, recover and heal from the pains of labor and delivery and entertaining guests. It can be overwhelming. Nothing can make a new mom feel comfortable and comforted than being enveloped in a nice plush robe, especially during cold and crisp Fall or Winter nights. Having it monogrammed adds the nice extra special touch. For those in warmer climates, a pretty frilly robe in pastels, paisley or other feminine design can help a new mom feel sensual during a time when she may be dealing with bloating and other pregnancy side effects. Brookstone sells a nice one, the Nab Robe, starting at $69.95.

7. Plush slippers– Many new moms experience water retention in their feet and legs during and immediately after giving birth. C-Section moms have it even worse because surgery creates even more water build up. As such, many moms quickly become to realize that they may not be able to fit into their old shoes and won’t for a while. A great warm and comfy pair of slippers would be an ideal for any new mom, for lounging around the home or just for slipping into after a day out and about on feet that are still recovering from childbirth. Ralph Lauren makes a comfy shearling slipper that retails for $75.

8. Anything from Tiffany’s – The sight of that little blue box can put a glimmer in any woman’s eye. For a new mom whose fingers may be swollen from retaining water, she may be upset and frustrated that she can no longer fit her wedding or engagement ring. Rather than put it away, wouldn’t it be a wonderful surprise to present her with a lovely chain to hang the rings on and wear around her neck so she can keep the symbol of your love and fidelity by her heart? Yes. Yes indeed. And as a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things Tiffany’s related, believe me, that you are sure to find a necklace in a variety of budgets at Tiffany’s. An Open Heart Pendant Chain sells for $125.00 and can fit a ring easily along with the alphabet pendant bearing either the mom’s or new baby’s initial.

You can fake it by purchasing a Tiffany Blue Bag for $9.90! Pair that with an AerWo box for $6.99 and you can really fake the funk! lol

Yes, National Parks Prices are Going Up So Here are the Free Days!

So, you might have heard that the National Park Service is dramatically increasing the entrance fee to many parks by as much as 4-fold!

It is true! For example,

Fortunately, the NPS has kept the Free Days through the year, though they have even cut the amount of those days. Yikes!

The U.S. Department of the Interior’s Oct. 24 call to dramatically raise entrance fees at 17 popular national parks — in some cases from $25 to $70 per car.

The National Park Service says the hike could raise $70 million a year to chip away at a $12 billion backlog of deferred maintenance on roads and buildings. Proponents claim it’s a necessary step toward ensuring the future of chronically underfunded public lands. But fee watchdogs and many conservation groups see it as simply another example of a dangerous trend: federal lands run less like a public resource and more like a commercial enterprise.

In 2018, there will only be to ur entrance fee-free days:

January 15 – Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

April 21 – First Day of National Park Week

September 22 – National Public Lands Day

November 11 – Veterans Day

“National parks connect all of us with our country’s amazing nature, culture and history,” National Park Service Deputy Director Michael T. Reynolds said in a press release. “The days that we designate as fee-free for national parks mark opportunities for the public to participate in service projects, enjoy ranger-led programs, or just spend time with family and friends exploring these diverse and special places. We hope that these fee-free days offer visitors an extra incentive to enjoy their national parks in 2018.”

There is the very credible argument that the fee hikes are needed to account for maintenance of less popular parks and to help alleviate a budget shortfall or to subsidize free parks.

Normally, 118 of the 417 national parks charge an entrance fee. The other 299 national parks do not have entrance fees.

The entrance fee waiver for the fee-free days does not cover amenity or user fees for activities such as camping, boat launches, transportation, or special tours.

Some think the switch is to drive sales to the annual pass which is still available For $80!

The America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass which allows unlimited entrance to more than 2,000 federal recreation areas, including all national parks that charge an entrance fee.

You also can take advantage of the free or discounted passes available for senior citizens, current members of the military, families of fourth grade students, and disabled citizens.

Other federal land management agencies offering their own fee-free days in 2018 include the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, U.S. Forest Service, and Army Corps of Engineers.

Look out for those!!

The National Park System includes more than 84 million acres and is comprised of 417 sites, including national parks, national historical parks, national monuments, national recreation areas, national battlefields, and national seashores. There is at least one national park in every state.

Last year, 331 million people visited national parks spending $18.4 billion which supported 318,000 jobs across the country and had a $35 billion impact on the U.S. economy.

Break Through the Anxiety that Builds Up Around the Holidays With These Tips

‘Tis the season and you’re not alone – there’s a lot going on with school, friends and family. Here are some quick tips for dialing back the tension so you all can enjoy the festivities, courtesy of the IndieFlix national documentary Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety:

  1. Take a breath – Sometimes all you need is a break from what you’re doing so you can recharge. Do something fun together as a family, like bake holiday cookies.
  2. Take care – Make sure you and your kids exercise, eat well, get enough sleep, and go on that winter walk to enjoy the season. Grownups should limit caffeine as it can make anxiety worse.
  3. Talk it out – Speak to a friend or family member about what’s bothering you and be sure to keep the lines of communication open with your children, too. If you can’t manage the holiday stress alone, don’t hesitate to seek professional assistance.
  4. Set limits and expectations – You don’t have to do it all. Decide what activities and visits are the most important and then stick to your plans. And managing your children’s expectations will go a long way towards relieving anxiety.
  5. Let it go – Functions with extended family can really ratchet up the stress. Try not to sweat it if Aunt Jane forgets to bring everyone’s favorite appy yet again or the kids are cranky. Remember what the holidays are really about and focus on all the things that are going right.

And here’s some advice to keep in mind if you’re trying to help someone with anxiety:

· Be supportive and empathetic.

· Modify your expectations.

· Listen with a nonjudgmental attitude.

· Encourage the individual to confront stressful situations and support their efforts. Avoiding the stress can make the anxiety worse.

ABOUT ANGST: Producers, and moms, Scilla Andreen and Karin Gornick have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Their new documentary utilizes the power of film to tell the stories of kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impact on their lives and relationships, as well as how they’ve found solutions and hope. The film features a special interview with world-renowned athlete and mental health advocate Michael Phelps, who shares the effect anxiety has had on his own life. In addition, Angst provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, along with the help and tools available to address the condition.
