18 DIY Reading Nooks You Can Make This Weekend

Finding a way to make reading fun for your kids will encourage a love of reading in them.
A child can read a book anywhere, but it’s more enjoyable if she has her own special place where she can go and read.  You may be thinking that you don’t have the space to create a reading nook for your kids, but you might be surprised when you see all of the different ways that these 18 bloggers have come up with to create a little nook.  You can take an awkward architectural feature in a room and turn it into a window seat or a bench.  If you have a closet that you aren’t using, you can turn that into a nook too.
The possibilities are endless, so read on and see if any of these ideas will work for you.

Architectural/Closet

Some houses have dormers on the outside of the house, but inside those dormers can sometimes create an awkward space in a room.  Many are screaming to have a window seat built there or a desk placed in between the two walls.  Take a look around your house with a new eye and see if there are any spots that you could turn into a reading nook for your kids.  If multiple kids will be using it, you might want to create it in a common area rather than in one of the bedrooms.

Curtained

If you don’t have a spare closet or architectural nook in your home, you might want to try one of these reading nook ideas.  You can take

window curtains, a shower curtain or just an old sheet and hang it up to create a private place to read.  Add some comfort with pillows you have around the house or buy some floor pillows or bean bags.  Hang some shelves for the books and add a light and you are all set.  It doesn’t have to be elaborate or difficult; it just needs to be a space that makes your kids happy when they go there.

Free Standing

If you live in an apartment and you don’t want to drill holes in the wall for curtains, you can create a free standing reading nook instead.

You may just be looking for an area that you can create quickly for your kids to read and play in where you can still see them.  A free

standing reading nook area can be created anywhere by putting together the essentials of good lighting, a container for books and a cushy place to sit.  For more ideas on how you can make your own free-standing

reading nook, take a look at these seven blog posts.

15 Celebrities Caught in Cheating While Pregnant Scandals

This weekend, comedian Kevin Hart came clean about having some indiscretions with a woman who is not his wife and recently tried to extort money from him in exchange for keeping a sexually-explicit video she took of him secret. He chose to fess up and apologize to current expectant wife Eniko Parrish and his children with ex wife Torrei Hart instead in a video posted by TMZ.

Good for him for not succumbing to an illegal extortion attempt. While it is disappointing that he strayed at a critical time in his wife’s life carrying their first child together, hopefully, they can overcome this incident.

Hollywood has a little history of male celebrities stepping out on their spouses while pregnant. And female celebs too. For example, actress Claire Danes reportedly cheated with her Stage Beauty co-star Billy Crudup who left his then 7-months pregnant wife Mary Louise Parker for her before Danes and Crudup too eventually split up.

Some end up in brand new unions.  In 2010, former NFL great and ex TODAY show Sports commentator Tiki Barber cheated on his pregnant wife Ginny Barber with 23-year old intern Traci Lynn Johnson while Ginny was pregnant with the couple’s twins. He is currently married to Johnson and the two of them have children.

Actress Shar Jackson was pregnant with her third child with longtime beau and backup dancer Kevin Federline, when he started an affair with Britney Spears.

Then there are the “duh” incidents common with athletes and rappers.

Lil Wayne had two women, singer Nivea and actress  Lauren London pregnant at the same time. So obviously somebody was getting cheated on at some point.

A-Listers get burned too.

Actress Salma Hayek broke up with her French billionaire fiance François-Henri Pinault 11 months after the couple had their first child. There was speculation he may have started an affair while she was still pregnant.

Finally, Bones Star David Boreanaz cheated on his wife of eight years, Jaime Bergman, while she was pregnant, reportedly — and of all people with Rachel Uchitel, the same NYC events planner who boned a married Tiger Woods!

Keep your chin up, Eniko! From the looks of recent photos she has posted on Internet, she seemed to be having a pretty fun pregnancy up until now.

This is Why Your Hair Falls Out During Pregnancy

Approximately 90% of your hair is growing at any one time, while the other 10% enter a resting phase. Every two to three months the resting hair falls out and allows new hair to grow in its place.

Telogen effluvium is the excessive shedding of hair that occurs one to five months following pregnancy. This is not uncommon, as it affects somewhere between 40 to 50% of women; but like most changes during pregnancy, it is temporary.

Hair loss that is connected to pregnancy usually occurs after delivery. During pregnancy, an increased number of hairs go into the resting phase, which is part of the normal hair loss cycle.

This condition is not serious enough to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss, and it should begin to diminish within 3-4 months after delivery. If you feel that you are experiencing unusual hair loss while you are pregnant, this may be due to a vitamin or mineral deficiency.

Our Fave Stylish Casual Celeb Weekend Looks

Celebs dress up for red carpets, premieres, and Tv appearances and on weekends, while running errands and traveling, they  get to dress down.

But because they’re always being photographed, they don’t have the luxury of looking bad even on their days off.

Case in point: Chrissy Teigen, Gisele Bundchen and Halle Berry always look fab.

This week is no different.

Teigen was chic in denim, wearing an Alexander Wang jacket and distressed cuffed Re/done jeans with a cute yellow Gucci t-shirt and matching monogram belt. The model accented her look with a cute pair of Saint Laurent shades, a Hermes purse, suede Balenciaga booties and Gold XIVKARATS hoops.

Gisele Bundchen rocked it in a rugged grey sweat shirt paired with cropped green Rosa Chá, Chanel shades, a Givenchy travel bag and a funky pair of black high tops by Golden Goose

Berry looked fashionable in a long black and white leopard print Dolce and Gabbana over distressed grey denim jeans, black leather booties and a black blouse.

Cold and Flu Season: Parents’ Guide to Kids’ Illnesses

Cold and Flu season is around the corner, so to you new parents, (and even some of you veteran ones), here is a breakdown of some common childhood illnesses that you should know about…take notes!

There are a handful of childhood illnesses that are more common than others, and you’ll need to be well-versed in how to recognize the early signs to ensure that your charges get the care they need in a timely manner.

  • The common cold – Everyone knows about the common cold, and there are plenty of old wives’ tales about how kids get them. Generally, the common cold is spread by germs that enter the body through the mouth or nose. Keeping little hands clean will help some in warding off this unpleasant experience. Always carry kid friendly hand sanitizer with you when going out in public and see to it that little ones do not gnaw on shopping cart handles or touch public door handles. Many stores now provide disinfectant wipes for the customer’s use, so take advantage of them when they’re available.
  • Chicken pox – Those little itchy dots can make for a miserable time for kids, and it’s one of the most common afflictions of childhood. Usually one child will come down with the pox and then others will fall one by one as it makes the rounds. Unfortunately, it usually gets spread around before the rash shows up. Kids are contagious for two or three days before the appearance of the rash through the crusting over of the blisters.

There are medicines that will help the itching, and oatmeal baths can also help keep irritation in check. Dr. Stephen Dowshen suggests avoiding the sun during the outbreak and for a few days after to prevent burning sensitive skin and increased scarring. Itching is exacerbated by heat and sweating; cold, damp washcloths applied to affected areas should help.

If you have not had chicken pox yourself and you have not had a vaccine, use precautionary measures to protect yourself while caring for an infected child. This illness takes quite a toll on teens and adults and can actually be dangerous for them, possibly leading to complications such as pneumonia, hepatitis and encephalitis. Scarring is permanent for adults who contract the disease.

  • Ear infections – Most kids experience ear infections from time to time. Don’t be surprised if your little charge has two or three of them during the year. Some children have chronic infections, meaning they are plagued with ear pain four or more times a year, or three or more times within a six month period.

Usually ear infections will occur with upper respiratory infections or colds. The estuation tube, which is much smaller in little ones, begins to swell. This tube connects the middle ear to the nose and back of the throat. Blockage here causes fluid to build up in the middle ear behind the eardrum. This build up can lead to infection due to germs multiplying, but doesn’t always happen. When it does, it often results in the child fighting off the infection and fever ensues. Temporary hearing loss can also be present as a result of the pressure on the eardrum caused by the excessive fluid.

Since some ear infections tend to be viral rather than bacterial, many doctors take a wait and see attitude rather than prescribing antibiotics. They will often suggest pain relievers, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen, and usually the infection runs its course in a matter of a few days. If it becomes severe, then more aggressive treatment is called for.

  • Fifth disease – For being a common illness, Fifth disease, caused by Parvovirus B19, is not talked about much. It’s a rash that leaves a child looking as if she’s been slapped. It is also commonly called “slapped cheek” rash since it is the most recognized manifestation of the illness. Initial symptoms – fever, runny nose and headache – are fairly mild.  The rash typically shows up several days after the onset of the more non-specific symptoms.

Except for rare instances where the child has a very weak immune system, Fifth disease tends to be mild and usually disappears within a few days. Most kids have full recovery and future immunity to the virus. In cases where the immune system is compromised, serious complications such as chronic anemia can crop up that will require medical treatment.

The historical name, Fifth disease, comes from the rash being number five on a list of common skin rash illnesses affecting children. Measles was first on the list followed by scarlet fever, rubella and Duke’s disease.

  • Croup – This illness is common among the very young. It is often the result of infection caused by human parainfluenza viruses (not to be confused with the flu virus). The upper respiratory tract becomes infected, and fever, runny nose and cough show up as symptoms. In the case of croup, the upper airways become inflamed. This inflammation of the larynx and trachea often results in a barking cough. It can also lead to hoarseness.

Children have a tendency to get worse at night. This is especially true for the child who is upset or crying. Since the swollen tissue of the windpipe can make breathing difficult, you may hear a high pitched noise called stridor during inhalations.

Plenty of rest and fluids, along with acetaminophen or ibuprofen for discomfort and fever, are generally enough to get the child through this uncomfortable illness.

Most of the common illnesses children will contract are fairly benign and will pass within a few days. You need to be aware of what illness they are contending with though, so that you can take necessary precautions to protect your own health. If you have a strong immune system, generally you will have nothing to be concerned about; still, you need to be diligent  around those diseases that affect adults more adversely then children.

Always remember that washing hands, proper etiquette for sneezing and coughing and a healthy lifestyle will help keep most illnesses at bay. When illness does strike, lots of TLC and a nice steaming bowl of chicken soup seem to work wonders in combatting those pesky bugs.

Celebs Currently Carrying Twins Celebrate #BumpDay

Two celeb moms who are carrying twins celebrated this year’s #BumpDay campaign on Wednesday, September 13, “to encourage people around the world to support all mothers by advocating for healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries.”

My Name Is Earl’s  expectant mama Jaime Pressly, who is pregnant with twin boys, posted an updated photo of her growing belly.

“830 women a day die worldwide from preventable issues during pregnancy,” Pressly captioned a black -and-white photo on Instagram cradling her bump.

She added: “A Healthy pregnancy can set a child up for a healthy future. Celebrate #BumpDay with @IMC_Worldwide & @WhatToExpect.”

Lady Antebellum lead singer Hillary Scott, also expecting twins, participated as well.

“In honor of #bumpday, here’s my bump. Encouraging all the expectant mamas out there to take care of you and your baby(ies)! #maternalhealthis SO important,” she captioned her own photo.

In June, the My Name Is Earl star announced that she is expecting twin boys this fall with longtime beau Hamzi Hijazi.

Preasly’s newborns will join the actress’ 10-year-old son Dezi, whom she co-parents with ex Eric Calvo.

Scott’s twins will join big sister Eisele Kaye, who turned four in July.

Over the past two years, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, a leading brand in pregnancy and parenting, has worked closely with the International Medical Corps to raise awareness for global maternal health, through their #BumpDay initiative.

This year it took place on September 13, 2017 and involved celebrities and influencers sharing  pictures of their current and past pregnancies, statistics on the dangers of pregnancies and deliveries around the world, and encouraging their followers to join the conversation.

Sienna Miller previewed the day in a recent copy of PEOPLE magazine.

The 20 Happiest States In America: Do You Live In One?

America ranks # 14 on this year’s World Happiness Report, down one spot since the previous edition.

With research showing that money up to a certain dollar amount can contribute to happiness, the personal-finance website WalletHub conducted an in-depth analysis of 2017’s Happiest States in America.

To determine where Americans have the highest satisfaction with life, WalletHub’s analysts compared the 50 states across 28 key indicators of happiness. The data set ranges from emotional health to income level to sports participation rate.

Here are the states that ranked in the top 20:

Hawaii has the lowest share of adult depression, 11.7 percent, which is 2.3 times lower than in Oregon, which has the highest at 27.0 percent.

New York has the fewest suicides (per 100,000 residents), eight, which is 3.5 times fewer than in Wyoming, which has the most at 28.
