The Push to Stop Surgeries on Children Born with Sex Organs of Both Gender Takes Flight

With all the recent focus on bathroom access for transgender individuals, it is interesting to note that there is another fight in the gender fluidity world: a push to end a practice in the medical culture of performing gender assignment surgery on infants born with genitalia that don’t quite meet definitions of typically male or typically female bodies.

In the past, we used the now-considered derogatory pejorative term hermaphrodite to describe what is now, more appropriately termed “intersex”.  Like the outdated term, the current medical paradigm  is also based on outdated medical theories popularized in the 1960s, states Kyle Knight, a researcher at Human Rights Watch.

“Doctors perform surgery on intersex children – often in infancy – with the stated aim of making it easier for them to grow up “normal.” Knight tells Bellyitch. “The fact that it is being challenged now is rooted in patients’ rights advocacy, understandings of bodily autonomy, and in part due to an opening up of dialogues about gender and sexuality. Much of the desire to make intersex people’s bodies ‘normal’ was rooted in homophobia—in that, a vagina had to be deep enough to take in a penis, a clitoris couldn’t be so big that it looked like a penis, etc. Those are not medical reasons, but biased interpretations of what a ‘normal’ body is.”

Knight’s organization recently released a report with  InterACT, a group advocating for intersex youth, aimed at educating the public on surgeries on intersex children deemed “unnecessary” and that urges Congress to ban the practice.

Essentially, the procedures were the traditional and common way of dealing with children born with sexual characteristics that do not neatly align with a typical boy or girl.

But HRW and InterACT’s argument is that before rearranging anatomy in medically unnecessary procedures to fit into the “normal” construct, parents should be informed and should wait until a child is old enough to have a say in the decision.

As Associated Press  recently reported, the practice is actually now under “assault” as the American Medical Association is currently considering a proposal to discourage it.  Also, according to that news report, three former U.S. surgeons general say it’s unjustified.

AP also references the Human Rights Watch report which calls “the results” of these surgeries “catastrophic” and asserts they “can inflict irreversible physical and psychological harm.”

The surgeries carry the risk of nerve damage, scarring, decreased sensitivity when adults and more.

And if you ever wondered whether some transsexual adults may have been intersex at birth but were operated on as a child to remove aspects of their true gender, then a recent out-of-court settlement may prove your hunch to be true.

This week, a family reached a $440,000 settlement against the Medical University of South Carolina for operating on their adopted son at 16-months old to look like a girl. Their son, M.C., now identifies as a boy.

There is also support groups out there for parents of intersex kids, the biggest one is AIS-DSD.

Members include some of Faith who decide against surgery because of their faith.

Knight agrees.

“Parents come to the conclusion to push back on surgery from a number of different perspectives—some say God made their baby perfect, God doesn’t make mistakes, and doctors should not try to play God with their child’s body,”he offered. “Others understand that while their child may transition in their gender identity later in life, the best support and care they can provide for their infant has nothing to do with adult gender identity and everything to do with love and support just like any other kid.

“Support groups and connections with other parents in similar situations is a crucial resource. Parents are understandably confused and afraid—there are daunting social situations in the immediate and on the horizon—but there is good advice out there, it’s just a matter of doctors referring to these groups and not bludgeoning parents with threats of hypothetical social outcomes like bullying and ‘middle school locker room’ teasing instead.”

10 Tips for Decluttering Your Home for the New School Year

I was cleaning out my basement this weekend and so I can totally relate and understand the research that shows that the average American home has 300,000 items in it. That’s why it is a good idea for everyone to use the season of preparing for a new school year to get the home in order.

Decluttering expert Tracy McCubbin, founder of dClutterfly, has 10 tips and tricks to declutter and organize your home in preparation for kids to go back to school, including:

  1. Before the onslaught of this school year’s crush of homework and artwork, make sure you have decluttered last year’s!
  2. After a summer of “I’m bored” you’ll have a great idea of what toys your kids really play with.  Time to donate (or toss if they are broken) toys that didn’t get touched. And don’t forget the holidays (more stuff) are just around the corner.  3.1% of the world’s children live in America, but they own 40% of the toys consumed globally.
  3. Did summer reading lists create a glut of books in your home?  Time to do a purge of the books that won’t get read again or won’t ever be read.  Also, return the overdue library books! Insert book drive center
  4. Running around in bathing suits and sprouting up like weeds means your kids have outgrown a lot of last year’s clothes. Time to do a deep dive on their clothes and donate the clothes they don’t wear or can’t fit into any more.  Plus you’ll then have plenty of room for back-to-school clothes shopping.
  5. Most kids get new backpacks for the each school year.  If last year’s pack is still in good shape, think about donating to a local nonprofit that works with foster kids. Use this an opportunity to declutter backpacks, duffle bags and suitcases.
  6. Everyone is back at or has moved on to a new sport so back to school is a great time to get rid of old sports equipment. Oftentimes, teams collectively donate used equipment to teams and schools that don’t have big budgets so maybe put together a cleat drive?!
  7. Pool, River, Lake or Ocean … have all wreaked havoc on your towels. Once everyone is settled in their new schedules, pull all the towels out and see which ones can go. Donate to local animal rescue.
  8. Tackle your garage. 25% of people with two-car garages don’t have room to park cars inside them and after a summer of everyone home, the garage has become the dumping ground. Tackle this before winter comes! And remember, this is probably one of the biggest jobs on the list .
  9. Constant snacking has probably turned the kitchen upside down. It’s time to return order and systems back to the kitchen.  And maybe a purge?! Sort through food storage, top but not bottom … out! Broken or cracked plates … gone.
  10. Next year think about doing this decluttering while the kids are at sleep away camp!

‘The Hills’ alum Whitney Port welcomes son, Sonny

Whitney Ports baby boy has arrived—and not a moment too soon!

The fashion designer and former MTV reality star announced her son’s birth Monday. “So, I have some news,” she wrote. “No big deal, but I created another human being and then delivered him into the world at 12:30 a.m. Thursday morning.” This is the first child for Port and her TV producer husband Tim Rosenman, who tied the knot in 2015 after three years of dating.

Trend Alert: Floral Print for the Summer (GET THE LOOK)

Floral dresses were on and popping at the Summer/Spring 2017 fashion shows. Since then, we’ve seen a lot of designers and brand put out variations of florals for their customers. The best thing about floral print is that it can be dressed up with a pair of strappy sandals or heels or dressed down with denim jeans or  capris. You can wear the print while out and about errand wearing or to brunch.

There are no limits. A lot of moms-to-be and new moms may think that prints are a no-no because they draw attention, but they really shouldn’t fear floral print. They usually come in very feminine variety and are often on a very light, soft and sophisticated fabric making floral print a no brainer.

I, personally, used to stay away from floral prints but when I found myself unable to escape them in the stores, I took the plunge and purchased one top and then floral pants and now I’m hooked.

This weekend saw Kerry Washington in a Rebecca Taylor Print Mix dress, Chrissy Tiegen in an Isabel Marant Iam Symmetrical midi print dress, Molly Sims in Zimmerman’s Mercer Floating floral print silk chiffon screen dress, Reese Witherspoon in a Tiffany Blue floral Draper James dress; and Kelly Ripa in a Gucci Floral and Snake print silk midi dress

If you’re interested in getting your hands on one of the dresses our celeb muses wore this weekend, take a look at the widget below to be taken to the merchant site that offers it.

How Much Beyonce and Jay Z are Paying Their 6 Nannies for the Twins

When you and your husband are worth over $1 billion dollars combined, then you can afford to pay $100,000 for six nannies to help you care for your newborn twins. That is how much Beyonce and Jay Z are forking over, according to report from OK! magazine.

Allegedly, according to insiders to the gossip mag, the twins do not sleep at the same time and so the three nannies each rotate in eight hour shifts.

They are additional help because their daughter 5-year old Blue Ivy has two nannies of her own.

If The Carters are able to close on a $140 million Bel-Air mansion they have been renting, then they’ll be golden.

A report in  the Los Angeles Times claims the 10,000 square feet, six-structure property may go for “just” $90m in the coming weeks. It features spas, a media room, four outdoor  swimming pools and a 15-car garage, where we’re sure the twin European trucks for the twin babies will be parked.

Indian Supreme Court Denies Abortion to 10-year Old Rape Victim

The Supreme Court of India issued a ruling on Friday denying abortion access to a 10-year old pregnant rape victim.

The court determined that  girl, who is 28 – 32 weeks along, was raped by her uncle. A neighbor noticed the girl’s swollen belly and suggested that her mom get her examined, the New York Times reports.

India law prohibits abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy but lawyers for the girl cited a case where another 10-year-old rape victim who was 21 weeks’ pregnant was allowe to have an abortion. They also argued that abortion procedures are much safer today than when the law was enacted more than 40 years ago, eroding the rationale for the 20-week rule.

Still the court refused, said Alakh Alok Srivastava, the lawyer who petitioned the court to allow the procedure.

“Going by the advanced stage of pregnancy, the court has declined to allow the abortion,” Mr. Srivastava said.

In the petition, he said the girl was about 26 weeks’ pregnant in mid-July; some local news reports on the hearing on Friday said she might be as far as 32 weeks along, the New York Times article states.

Deepak Yadav, the deputy superintendent of police, said cops arrested the uncle in Chandigarh and charged him with rape.

Doctors as the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh examined the girl and determined that the fetus was “beyond that age” where an abortion would be possible.

“At some stage of pregnancy, baby has earned the right to live,” Dr. Vanita Suri, the head of the institute’s obstetrics department, said.

The girl’s family told The Indian Express newspaper that the girl had not been to school for several months. Her father is a watchman and her mother is a maid.

This case is not too unusual, sadly.

Last year, a 10-year old girl in Brazil, raped by her stepfather, gave birth after complaining about a stomach ache in school. A 10-year old girl in Colombia gave birth in 2012. In 2015, an 11-year old gave birth after a court in Paraguay denied her an abortion after she too was raped and became pregnant at age 10.

Back to School : 10 Things Organized Parents Do to Get Their Kids’ ClosetsReady

As you prep to send the kids back to school, you may want to reassess what’s in their closet now and consolidate uneeded clothes, give away some, fold away some for younger children and basically get organized. Here are 10 tips to help you do that from a past post:

1.Take inventory: Go through the clothes that you already have for your child and see which items fit and which items don’t. Take the items that they have out grown to a resale shop or donate them to a worthy cause.

2.Assess how your child dresses: Don’t buy a bunch of dresses if you have a tomboy who doesn’t like to wear dresses. This may seem like common sense, but for some reason people love to buy pretty dresses and then they hang in the closet with the tags on them. Or they are worn once for that special occasion and that’s it.

3.Buy separates: Instead of buying a bunch of dresses you need to buy separates so that you can mix and match tops and skirts. You can also wear the tops with jeans or other pants. A dress is one outfit, but if you buy three skirts and three tops that can be mixed and matched then you can get nine outfits out of those items.

4.Buy basic colors: When buying pants or skirts think about buying basic colors, black, blue and brown. Those will go with a lot of different things you may already own. The more combinations that you can make the better off you will be.

5.Don’t buy outfits: Stores are great about putting together outfits, like pink and green striped leggings with a matching pink and green top. This is a one trick pony. You might be able to wear the top with jeans, but otherwise you can wear the pants with that one top and that’s it. Plus it’s such a bold color choice that you don’t want to repeat it in the same week.

6.Teach them to wear things more than once: The biggest thing that they can wear more than once is pajamas. There is no need to have seven pairs of pajamas. They can get up in the morning and fold them up and put them under their pillow for the next night. Having three to four pairs of pajamas should be plenty.

7.Add leggings to an outgrown dress: Do you have some dresses that are getting too short but they fit otherwise? Just add a pair of leggings and you can still get some more mileage out of those dresses.

8.Jeans, jeans, jeans: Most of the time jeans can be worn more than once in a week so teach your child to hang or fold them up after the first wearing unless they know they got a stain on them. Jeans are very versatile and can be worn dressed up with a nice shirt or sweater or worn with a T-shirt.

9.Buy basics: Buy a sweater in white so that you can take those short-sleeved dresses into Fall and Winter. Buy a white shirt that will go with anything or under any sweater to make an outfit warmer for winter. Black pants are always a good idea because they can be worn with any shirt and can be dressed up or down depending on the circumstances.

10.Take pictures and make a fashion book: Boys are especially bad about grabbing the shirt that is on the top in their drawer and wearing it over and over. For boys you might want to hang shirts so that they can all be seen. With girls, make a fashion book. Take pictures of all of the separate pieces and then mix and match them in a fashion book to show the different outfits that can be put together. Even young children can pick out an outfit and pull the pieces out of their closet and put a matching outfit together. Accessories for girls are also great to stretch a wardrobe. A great colorful scarf can be added to a basic black or brown top and you have a completely different look that how you wore it last week. Accessories are cheap and this is a good place to allow your kids to follow the trends, but not break that bank.

Good luck!
