‘Outdaughtered’ Reality TV Dad of Quints Reveals He Suffers from PPD

outdaughtered-tlc

Reality TV dad Adam Busby opened up on ABC‘s Good Morning America about being among the 1 in 1o men that suffer postpartum depression. The dad to America’s first modern set of all girl quintuplets, born in April 2015, and his wife start on the TLC show Outdaughtered.

On the morning show, Busby talked about how the pressure of being a new parent triggered depression that he still battles even today. He first admitted it during an episode of the show.

“It totally got worse and worse, but it crept in,” Busby said. “The babies, providing for my family and the kids and stuff, I felt like it was just constantly on my mind to where it’s really hard to focus on anything else. I started withdrawing from friends that I’ve talked to on a daily basis. I didn’t feel like engaging with people … just because of the weight and constantly thinking about all this stuff that I have to prepare for.

“I felt like my love, my mental state, my thoughts, I gave every ounce to my family and I poured that into my family and my girls,” he added. “I felt like at the end of the day, there was just nothing left.”

Since coming out with his struggles on TV and social media, other men who have had similar crises have come forward and thanked him for his courage.

Others have been critical but Buzz isn’t let that get to him and neither his wife Danielle Busby, and they both are taking it in stride.

“I’ve gotten a lot of criticism since coming out with this from people that just don’t understand, and that just adds to the stigma,” Adam Busby told ABC News today. “You can think logically about it and say, ‘You should just put yourself into perspective and think about all the good stuff you have going for you.’ Yeah, we have a lot of great stuff going on, but whenever you struggle with depression, your mind just doesn’t let you go that way.

“I always thought that people with depression are weak and that’s not the case. I know that there’s this stigma out there because I’m guilty of it. I held onto it for two years and I tried to fix it myself and I tried to deny it and I tried to run from it and all that did was make it worse because I held it in.”

He took the advice of a friend who suggested he look into a PPD diagnosis.

“You kind of start digging more and realize, ‘Man, this is something that’s happened ever since the babies were born and I’ve been struggling with it since, because of the sheer change in our lives,'”  Busby confessed while also stating he opened up about the condition to help other new dads who may be suffering from PPD as well.

They are parents to 2-year old Ava, Olivia, Hazel, Riley, Parker and 6-year old big sister Blayke.

The last all-female quintuplets were born in 1969.

10 Reasons You Need to Quit Being A Mean Parent

img_9064

Developmental specialists, medical professionals and psychological researchers alike have dedicated decades of energy and resources to exploring the mechanics of parenting.

Diana Blumberg Baumrind, a clinical and developmental psychologist, is one of those researchers. Her studies led her to categorize parenting into four different styles; authoritarian, permissive, authoritative and uninvolved.

Theses have been criticized and accepted by many in the world of child psychology. An authoritative parent is firm and sets limits, but is not rigid. The authoritative parent is willing to make exceptions when appropriate, respond to certain demands of the child, but does not overindulge in them.

Permissive parents allow their children to dominate the household, while authoritarian parents are excessively strict and rigid in their thinking and uninvolved parents are exactly how they sound – uninvolved in their children’s lives. While all different types of parenting styles may yield different outcomes, here are 10 reasons why being a mean parent doesn’t work.

1. Fear – A driving factor of mean parenting is fear. Mean parents may use guilt-inducing strategies or physical force to instill a sense of fear in their children. A healthy dose of fear is appropriate at times and may even be necessary under certain circumstances. If your primary approach to parenting involves using fear as a tool, however, it can have a negative developmental impact.

2. Intimidation – Using fear to control a child’s behavior or humiliation to intimidate him into good behavior may work in the short term, but can have far-reaching implications. An intimidated child will usually embrace their role within the family as a victim and allow themselves to be victimized throughout adulthood, or rebel against it to become overly aggressive to compensate for the loss of power during their formative years.

3. Lack of Coping Skills – Many times mean parenting tactics don’t allow for children to express less than desirable emotions. If a child is crying and the parent cannot appease them quickly, they may use a loud or aggressive voice, demanding the child to stop. Unfortunately, this way of stifling emotions teaches children it is not okay to be upset or disappointed and, in turn, they are not shown ways to care for someone else without using forceful strategies.

Depression – In some cases, a mean parent might be struggling with a lack of emotional control or anger management issues. People who are incapable of handling conflict or have a constant need to control may become very emotionally and mentally distressed when they’re faced with a conflict or loss of control. Inadvertently modeling this behavior can teach your children to mimic it, affecting their own ability to handle negative emotions as they mature.

img_9065

Emotional Instability – Being raised in an emotionally tumultuous or explosive environment can generate a lack of emotionalL stability in children. Anxiety, hypersensitivity and hyperactivity are all conditions that can afflict kids who are constantly exposed to aggressive or frightening behavior from their parents.

Lack of Respect – While a child may fear the wrath of an angry parent, fear and respect are not always synonymous. Children of mean parents can grow into young adults who lack respect for authority or view a lack of authority in others as a weakness. They may also lack respect for their own boundaries, thus paving the way for other destructive behavior, both physically and emotionally. This lack of respect for others and for themselves may manifest by the child engaging in harmful activities and aggressive or rebellious behavior, according to researchers at the University of New Hampshire.

Lack of Compassion – When a child is taught that crying or expressing frustration or disappointment is wrong, they are indirectly shown a lack of compassion. This will make it difficult for them to show compassion to others as well.

Low Self-esteem – Fear can crush a child’s sense of security. Lack of emotional expression can suffocate her creativity. Controlling behavior can suppress his autonomy. When a child’s emotional development is arrested it restricts the love and compassion a child will have for herself. Parenting expert Dr. Laura Markham asserts that the kids of overly authoritarian parents will often use the same tactics to shame, intimidate and bully their inner being, lowering or destroying their self-esteem.

Bullies or Aggressive Demeanor – Children are like sponges. They absorb everything around them, negativity included. If all they are shown is negative or mean behavior, they are likely to mirror their home life in social settings. Bullying is a way of expressing internal frustration. Kids typically don’t bully other children or exude an aggressive demeanor if they feel loved, cared for and accepted as they are.

Abusive Relationships – Because being bullied or exposed to aggressive parenting styles shapes the way your child views the world, it can prompt her to seek out that same behavior in her adult relationships. When anger and fear are commonplace throughout the formative years, they become the baseline for normalcy in a child’s mind. If you want your child to be a reflection of love and kindness, take some time to evaluate your own relationship with them.

A rule of thumb in terms of being a good parent is to find balance in your parenting style. An extreme of any one method can lend itself to unfavorable results, not to mention all children are different, so one style won’t always work with all kids. Your first-born might be a naturally quiet and obedient kid, however your other children may be a bit more rambunctious. Expecting your second or third child to be just as perfectly mannered as the first is setting yourself up for frustration. Set limits, but be flexible in how discipline is doled out to each individual child.

How Much Kim Kardashian and Kanye West Are Paying Their Pregnant Surrogate

kardashian-fam

And baby makes 5 (or more) for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West who are expecting again via a surrogate, US Weekly reports.

According  to the magazine, a San Diego mom in her late 20s is three months pregnant with the couple’s baby. She is being paid $45,000 for her services at a rate of $4,500 per month (because pregnamcy is 40 weeks and NOT 9 months as is falsely portrayed in the media).

The surrogar was referred to the Wests by an agency that they paid a deposit of $68, 850 to, TMZ reports.

The baby is due in January 2018 and in the event it turns out to be twins, they’ll pay an additional $5,000 each month for the extra baby.

I am a Beyonce fan but even I am turned off by members of the Bey Hive alleging that Kim is trying to be like Beyonce who recently welcomed twins or keep up with her.

Actuall, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star expressed interest in having another baby before Beyonce even announced her second pregnancy, but was told by her doctors to avoid carrying the baby herself given all her medical proble.

They need to give it a rest with the silly comparisons. Yeah, I said it! LOL!

Other stipulations in the contract focus on the surrogate’s wellness habits, US Weekly adds. Among the fairly standard expectant-mom guidelines are no drinking, smoking or drug use; no hot tubs or saunas; no raw fish; and no handling cat litter.

CDC Issues New Guidance on Zika and Pregnant Women

zika

Yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its interim guidance on caring for pregnant women who may have been exposed to the Zika virus.  The updated guidance is published online July 24 in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

“CDC has updated the interim guidance for U.S. health care providers caring for pregnant women with possible Zika virus exposure in response to 1) declining prevalence of Zika virus disease in the World Health Organization’s Region of the Americas (Americas) and 2) emerging evidence indicating prolonged detection of Zika virus immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies,” state Titilope Oduyebo, MD, from the Zika Response Team, CDC, and colleagues.

The agency updated the guidance given the fact that it is difficult to accurately interpret the current available tests for Zika, and the fact there is new evidence showing that antibodies to Zika virus can be detected more than 12 weeks after a person is infected.

Ugh!

The CDC kept the definition of possible Zika virus exposure: If a woman has traveled to or is living in an area where mosquitoes carry the virus or is having sex with an individual who has traveled to or lives in such an area.

All practitioners and medical facilities that see pregnant women should take heed to the following recommendations:
  • Ask all pregnant women in the United States and US territories about possible Zika virus exposure before and during their current pregnancy at every prenatal visit. Providers should also ask about symptoms of Zika (eg, fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis).
  • Pregnant women should not travel to areas at risk for Zika transmission. If their sexual partner lives in such an area, pregnant women should use condoms or abstain from sex during pregnancy.
  • Pregnant women with recent Zika virus exposure and symptoms of Zika should undergo Zika virus nucleic acid test (NAT) of serum and urine and IgM testing as soon as possible, through 12 weeks after symptom onset.
  • For pregnant women without symptoms but with ongoing possible exposure to Zika, IgM testing is no longer routinely recommended; offer Zika NAT testing three times during pregnancy, although optimal timing and frequency of NAT alone are unknown.
  • For asymptomatic pregnant women with recent possible Zika exposure, routine Zika testing is not recommended but can be considered using shared-decision making.
  • Pregnant women with recent possible Zika exposure whose fetus has ultrasound findings suggesting congenital Zika syndrome should undergo maternal testing with NAT and IgM.
  • For nonpregnant women with ongoing Zika exposure, Zika IgM testing is not warranted to establish baseline IgM levels as part of preconception counseling.

The guidance includes an updated comprehensive approach for testing placental and fetal tissues in certain cases, such as in a mother with laboratory-confirmed Zika whose fetus or infant has possible Zika-associated birth defects.

I forget that Jessica Alba and her husband Cash Warren are expecting their third child but was reminded by PEOPLE which re-shared a recent Instagram  and Facebook photo the actress and businesswoman shared of a recent Hawaii family vacation.

“We had an epic family vacay,” she captioned a shot of herself with a group of family and friends including daughters Haven Garner and Honor Marie. “Thank you to everyone at the Four Seasons for treating us like family.”

Oh and also there are the updates from TMZ which has been stalking the family and took stealth pics of her baby bump while she sunbathed on the beach. Oh TMZ!

Nice! Congrats to the growing family.

Viral #IHadAMiscarriage Instagram Account Aims to Destigmatize Miscarriage

vaughn-dabney-i-had-a-miscarriage

As women get older, close to 40 percent at age 40 will experience a miscarriage, a rate that is much lower for women age 20 to 30 (9-17%), states the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Although common, miscarriage is still a taboo subject that isn’t discussed much, leaving those who suffer it to feel isolated, alone and ashamed sometimes.

One mom has turned her miscarriage into a viral Instagram account with over 15,000 followers!

Jessica Zucker, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist based in Los Angeles who specializes in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health. Dr. Zucker is the creator of the #IHadAMiscarriage campaign, and a line of pregnancy loss cards.

Zucker created her account which began as a hashtag, #IHadAMiscarriage  to share her personal story with others.  Zucker was 16 weeks pregnant with her second child and had passed the first trimester time period when miscarriage is most common. In her first post where she used the hashtag, Zucker wrote,  “I had a second-trimester miscarriage. That is a fact of my life,” she wrote. “I have no shame. No self-blame. No guilt. I did nothing wrong. I did nothing to deserve this. My body works. I don’t feel it failed. I embrace my grief fully and allow it to wash over me. I grieve still.”

The empowering message was well received and encouraged others to share their story and they continue today in beautiful prose, handpaintings, and other motivational and endearing messages that Zucker publishes on her now viral Instagram account in posts like this one.

# IHadAMiscarriage I had a 2nd trimester miscarriage. This is a fact of my life. An experience that changed who I am. Pregnancy after pregnancy loss changed me all the more. I have no shame. No self-blame. No guilt. I did nothing wrong. I did nothing to deserve this. My body works. I don’t feel it failed. I embrace my grief fully and allow it to wash over me. I grieve still. I don’t believe rainbow babies “replace” our lost loves. When we lean into heartache, we evolve. When we work vigorously to stave it off, we drown. I don’t believe everything happens for a reason. I know I am not alone, nor are you. _ This campaign is here for anyone who has experienced any type of pregnancy or infant loss. We are here to share stories with the aim of softening stigma and ushering in connection. Let this space be a life line. An anchor. A community. _ What an elating honor it is to have my work and specifically this page featured on @selfmagazine today. and this one

@channelfrida shares: After the first miscarriage I thought about getting a small halo tattoo that only I would see and understand the meaning of. Never did I imagine I would go through it 3 more times in less than 11 months. _ Now that we have an answer and a hopeful solution, I decided to spend this waiting period before surgery and before TTC again to design this tattoo with the help of an amazingly talented and gracious tattoo artist. One birth month flower for every due date we will mourn. Two hearts, mine and my husband’s, amidst the garden. _ Sitting for this tattoo was a strange and emotional experience. The physical pain was rough, but nothing compared to the past year, and I kept thinking this tribute was oddly fitting. _ I look forward to the moment I will be able to wrap these arms around our rainbow baby, and one day share the meaning of my mural of flowers with them. _ #IHadAMiscarriage #miscarriage #grief #recurrentmiscarriage #loss #rainbowbaby #pregnancyafterloss #motherhood

Rushing the Pain by @jazzandkate. Stories from around the world (Connecticut). Posted with permission. _ “Deciding not to have another baby was the only way I could garner some control over all that happened to me over the past year. Two baby boys that I’d never meet. Two baby brothers that my daughter would never have. There are worse things than having an only child, I told myself. It’s time to be grateful for what you have and move on. _ Six weeks after my second loss, I was steadfast to get all things baby out of my house. I packed boxes, organizing everything immaculately as I went. I considered selling but the process seemed too time consuming. I needed it it if my house as quickly as possible. Thousands of dollars of inventory, gone. It felt therapeutic in the moment but now that it’s gone, I sit here wondering, “what have I done?” _ #IHadAMiscarriage #miscarriage #pregnancyloss #motherhood #pregnancyafterloss #grief #loss #1in4 // Artwork by @Marco.demasi found via @jasoncampbellstudio.

Teyana Taylor’s ‘Fade’ Choreography Is Nominated for an MTV VMA, Revisit the Gifs and Videos

teyana-kanye

Last year at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West debuted the music video for his then- new song, “Fade“, starring our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum, Teyana Taylor.

Today, the 2017 MTV VMA nominations came out and to no surprise Taylor and her choreography team were nominated for Best Video Choreography!

I am rooting for her flash dance inspired video and moves, and her banging post-baby body to match.

In case you missed it, here are some gifs and the video to jog your memory.

teyana 3

In the video for Fade, outfitted in a “Flashdance” -esqe work out gear, super cropped underboob-revealing tank, high cut workout undies and knee pads, Taylor performed some pretty wickedly fierce dance moves inside an empty gym.

teyana6

Yes, this is the same woman who gave birth one week and who looked like this a week later and then 6 months later this:

teyana1

Just her, dripping with hotness. The artists that perform on the record Yeezy, Ty Dolla $ign and Post Malone are nowhere to be seen. Um, not that anyone needed them.

teyana 5

The rhythmic gyrations and phenomenal choreography ended with some steamy NSFW scenes with her husband Cleveland Cavalier‘s Iman Shumpter in the shower. For those who don’t know, Taylor, is also well known among mainstream audiences for her 2007 my My Super Sweet Sixteen party which aired on MTV. And her fiance is the same dude who helped Taylor deliver their daughter in the bathtub.

teyana 10

The final scene ends with a close up of Taylor, only with her face looking like a puma, and she has a tail. She’s on Shumpter’s back and their daughter Iman Jr is close nearby with some sheep surrounding them all. Odd. I know. Watch the video here on Digg (if it hasn’t been taken down).

Or  below

With that video, Taylor became the official MILF and #BodyGoals for a bunch of people who will probably never look as good as she does. lol.

Back to School: Your Kid will Get Better Grades with Better Executive Functioning Skills, 5 Tips

bellyitch rewind

back to school

As many children go back to school this month, several struggle in class, lose assignment sheets and notes, miss assignments and  forget to bring home books needed to complete homework if he or she is not organized.  There are tremendous benefits to teaching children executive functioning skills. These are the type of skills top or mid level execs use to succeed in work but certainly can apply to kids as well.

Organization and focus are key qualities for many successful adults, but these skills do not come naturally to grown ups, imagine if you were taught it at a young age and grew with those skills.

The Glenholme School in Washington, Connecticut  actually has a program called “Executive Functioning Skills” which helps its students focus on tasks at hand, prioritize and organize in a way that will help them throughout their lives even after leaving school.

Here are 5 tips that Maryann Campbell, Executive Director of The Glenholme School, offers to assist all parents and children:

  1. Stash and trash– Prevent mountains of papers from accumulating by learning what to keep and what to toss. This is a very important skill, even for the most organized adults! Teach children at a young age what types of documents to keep and throw away as well as how to best organize the materials they are keeping. Your future storage bins will thank you!
  1. Balancing work and fun – It is important to teach children that there is a time for work and a time for play, and that they are both important for a well-balanced life! Make time for studying, after school activities and dinner with the family.
  1. Manage the day – Parents have planners, and so should children! Teach your child to use a day planner or calendar, where they can record their school work, after-school activities, social events and family time.  Whether it is paper or digital, it doesn’t matter. The point is that the child learns to manage their time and sets realistic expectations for each day.
  1. Organize assignments –Parents can help their children stay organized with color-coded folders and a desk-top storage system for their school work.  Children also really enjoy label makers. Divide the folders and storage containers by subject, and teach children how to label accordingly.
  1. Lightening the backpack without losing the work – We’ve all witnessed the tiny child with the gigantic backpack that weighs nearly as much as they do, as well as the extreme opposite of the student who shows up to class without a pen or paper. Teaching children to carry what is important for the day will help them be better prepared for class. Go over the day’s activities the night before, make a list of what classes and activities the child has and pack accordingly.

This solid advice should help parents have a basis and foundation for passing on these critical skills to their children.
