How to Transition Your Kid to a Toddler Bed

cute-baby-2220375_1280

Co-sleeping was a lifesaver when your child was a baby, but now that he’s an energetic toddler, taking up half of the bed and thrashing around all night, the time has come for him to move into his own room. To make this transition as smooth as possible for your family, here are a few upgrades you should make to his room before his first night sleeping solo.

Install a Security Camera

When your little one moves into their own room, it’s only natural to worry about how they are getting on by themselves in there all alone. By installing a security camera, you can get a real-time view of what’s going on in there whenever you want. If you hear a noise in the middle of the night, you can easily peer in your child’s room through the security camera’s companion smartphone app, instead of having to get up out of bed and chance waking up your little one.

While some rely on a baby monitor for the same purpose, a security camera is a more effective long-term solution as your toddler moves into his or her own room. Lorex security cameras are designed to have a longer lifespan than baby monitors and they use state-of-the-art technology, which allows them to provide a clearer picture, even in low-light situations.

Add Blackout Shades

Anyone who has ever tried to put a toddler to bed during the summer, when it’s still broad daylight at bedtime, knows that the darker you can make the room at bedtime, the better. This is especially important as you transition your child into his or her own room, as most toddlers will use any excuse (“but it’s still sunny outside”) to fight sleep and avoid bedtime.

For a high-tech solution, try Serena remote controlled shades. They can tie into the rest of your connected smart home gadgets, so you can activate them with the touch of a button from your smartphone or tablet.

Put the Lights on a Dimmer Switch

Help ease your child’s energy level down at bedtime as your create a new nighttime routine in their own room by gently dimming the lights in the hour leading up to lights out. Exposure to bright lights before bed can deceive your little one’s internal clock, making it tough for him or her to fall asleep.

Add a dimmer switch for the overhead lighting in your child’s room, easing the lights down further as bedtime approaches, switching to a small reading light as you read the final bedtime story together. Using a reading light is ideal, as it offers minimal light and can be easily switched off without getting out of bed as you snuggle your toddler to sleep.

Match White Noise

Consider any white noise that you child may be used to hearing while sleeping and mimic that in his new room. For instance, if you sleep with a ceiling fan on or a sound machine, do what you can to recreate the white noise in your child’s room. Whether that means installing a ceiling fan, adding a small fan on a nightstand or getting a sound machine, these relatively quick fixes can make a huge difference in easing your toddler’s transition.

The two posed on the regal red carpet of the event, which was officially co-chaired by Vogue editor-in-chief for life Anna Wintour, Katy Perry and  Pharrell Williams.

This year celebrates the life and work of designer Rei Kawakubo. All attendees were encouraged to come dressed in clothing inspired by the Japanese designer’s exhibit,  Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.

Last night marked the official opening of the exhibit at the gallery as every year.

It is an undisputed fact that snacking on high calorie, high fat, sugar and salt snacks does our diets in every time. The average American gets about 23 percent of daily calories from snacks. According to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), for a man that amounts to 634 calories each day from snacking and 438 for women.

However, it is possible to snack smartly by incorporating a handful of nuts, greek yogurt, berries, raw veggies and humus to help stave off hunger so we aren’t ravenous come lunch or dinner time. But that’s not easy either. In today’s high paced times, people don’t make time to pack healthy snacks and the good stuff isn’t always the most tasty, hence why we go for the junk food!

And, with our busier and busier daily lives of career, fitness and family who has the time to make sure the very crucial thing that drives our health is attended to?

15 Ways You Can Build a Calming Nursery for Your Baby

When you learn of a brand new bundle of joy’s impending arrival, one of your first thoughts may be of the nursery you’d like to create for him. After you’ve adjusted to the idea of bringing a new life into the family, you’ll be faced with a staggering array of decisions that make life in the months before your baby’s arrival quite hectic. Creating a calm, soothing oasis from the frenetic pace of the world can help you and your baby find some serenity. These tips can help you create the peaceful space you’ve envisioned and to perfect it before your baby arrives.

1. Color is Everything – The color of the walls and accents in any room set the mood. If you’re shooting for a more tranquil, serene space, it’s best to choose colors that promote those feelings. Bold and energetic colors like bright orange or red may not be conducive to rest, while pale blues and greens can have the desired calming effect.

2. Skip the Frilly Bedding – A crib that looks like a magazine layout may create a sense of pride for you, but it can be dangerous for your baby. Making sure that he gets a good night’s sleep without increasing SIDS risks is a parent’s job, so make sure your nursery planning takes American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines into consideration.

3. Don’t Forget the Window TreatmentsBlackout shades can help you keep the sun out of Baby’s eyes while he naps during the day, creating a soothing space. You will want to make sure that you choose window treatments that don’t pose a strangulation risk, as babies can become entangled with cords that are within their reach.

4. Include a Comfy, Adult-Sized Chair – The nursery may be your baby’s room, but you’ll be spending many sleepless nights there as well. A comfortable chair that accommodates a sleepy adult will be a blessing for you, boosting the overall feeling of calm in the room.

5. Make the Most of Nursery Closet Space – Clutter doesn’t promote calmness, so devote some energy to effective closet use. Babies may be tiny people, but their stuff can take up an astounding amount of space!

6. Keep Storage Solutions Simple – The cute tub you’ve found for storing diaper wipes may be a thematic match with the room, but you won’t be soothed for long when you realize it’s too complex to open while holding down a dirty, squirming baby.

7. Choose Functional, Multi-Purpose Furniture – Rather than buying a changing table that serves no other purpose, consider a nice dresser with a safety rail installed and a soft changing mat placed over the top. When your child is out of diapers, it’ll still be a functional piece of furniture.

8. Be Budget-Conscious – The most beautiful, perfectly designed nursery will create nothing but stress if you dramatically exceed your budget in terms of planning. To make sure that Baby’s space isn’t a source of grief for you, keep an eye on your spending.

9. Look Up! – A newborn may not notice, but an older baby spends a significant amount of time on his back, looking at the ceiling. When you paint and decorate the nursery, keep in mind that a stained ceiling in need of painting can cheapen the rest of the room.

10. Choose Safe Paints – Finding the perfect shade of paint is a key aspect of creating a soothing and tranquil nursery, but it’s important to make sure that your wall colors are of the low-VOC variety. Volatile organic compounds can cause respiratory irritation and other health problems, which isn’t an environment you’ll want to bring a baby into.

11. Incorporate Heirloom Pieces – The crib you used as a baby, a rocking chair that came from your partner’s nursery or other heirloom pieces can be perfect ways of adding personal, comforting touches to a nursery. Just be sure that they meet current safety guidelines.

12. Think Outside the Big Box Retailer – There’s nothing wrong with opting for mass-produced accessories, but artsy parents may find that they’re more satisfied with the efforts of independent artists and creators.

13. Look for Pieces That Grow With Your Child – Having a few pieces of furniture that your child can use as he ages will create a sense of routine and comfort for your child, along with a feeling of consistency.

14. Consider Tradition Over Trends – What’s trendy today may be old news tomorrow. Furthermore, fad decorating is known more for being cutting-edge than aesthetically pleasing. A traditional, comforting nursery may be more soothing than a haute baby space.

15. Integrate a White Noise Device – Infants fall into a deep sleep when they hear the sound of the washing machine or the gentle lull of the road beneath the tires for a reason. Replicating these sounds with a white noise device can help your child feel more comfortable and calm in his nursery.

Your Teen and His Friends Are Playing With These ADHD Toys in Class

81zlrmf9zfl-_sl1500_

Trending… Kids in middle and high school are ordering and playing with toys that were created to help children with ADHD/ADD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and Attention Deficit Disorder) cope with their condition in class. The toys keep their kids minds and fingers occupied so they can focus better in class.

However, they are popping up in the hands (and pockets ) of kids without the condition. While they are great tools for those who need them, because boys, I believe, have a tougher time focusing in class and are fidgety, even if they aren’t officially diagnosed. Nonetheless, I fear, it’s just a matter of time before they become a distraction in class and get banned from schools. Until then, here is a brief run down of the fidget toys most used:

81zlrmf9zfl-_sl1500_

Yomaxer sells a thing called a Tri-Spinner fidget toy which is a plastic toy for $9.99. It’s for adults and kids. They hold the spinner in one hand and use the other to spin it rapidly using small continuous strikes to keep it spinning indefinitely. They are pocket size and can be kept and spun discreetly in a pocket even during class.

Then there is fidget dice. At $14.96, this 12-sided plastic dice designed for people who cannot keep their fingers still. The dice are also used to help cope with anxiety and depression.

For kids with Autism, ADHD and Anxiety, there is a flippy chain, an interlocking stainless chain of rings that lets them fidget in creative ways to fidget. They are cheaper at $5.99 to $7.99 per toy.

In my son’s school, the Fidget Blox cubes are the most popular. That company sell the set for $14.95 but recently, there has been quite a few knockoffs being sold on Amazon by fulfillment for as low as $8.95.

Here is a list of other similar toys to consider:

Daytime Emmy Red Carpet where Neutral and Sheer Reigned

6974a3a4-d093-4b7e-b70d-d7f7c66a6beb

Yesterday was the Daytime Emmy Awards held at the Pasadena Convention Center in Pasadena, California.

You can find a list of winners here!

Doing our usual red carpet scope out of the moms we have featured before on the blog, we saw the neutral and sheer trend still reigning strong.

Tamera Mowry poses for a portrait at “Portraits by The Artists Project Sponsored by Foster Granton” during the 44th Daytime Emmy Awards on April 30, 2017.

In a surprise shift from her usual conservative dress, Tamera Mowry-Housley showed out in a blush jeweled with pearls Tony Ward ball gown with nude tulle overlay and a sheer peekaboo top. Okay Tamera! We see you stepping out of your comfort zone.

img_5101

Not suprisingly embracing her curves was her co-host on her FOX syndicated show The Real Adrienne Bailonwho also went with neutral tone in a one shoulder curve-hugging. Love!

Jeanne Mai wore white and she, Loni Love and the entire cast posed backstage for a cast photo as part of the “Portraits by The Artists Project Sponsored by Foster Granton” all looking spectacular!

Their old co-host Tamera Braxton-Herbert, who was let go from the show this season, also looked amazing in a neutral tone ball gown as well. She infamously announced days before the show her plans to join the ladies of the cast had they won.

We didn’t get to see that awkward moment (given how devastated Tamar looked in The Braxton Family values airing of her reaction to getting fired and her unfollowing any friend who guest appeared on the show since).

Aisha Tylers show The Talk won their category.  She was joined by our other Bumpwatch alum, Sara Gilbert on stage.

img_5114

Oh and Toni Braxton was there looking fab in black!

Her sis Tamar tried to help fluff her dress but ended up revealing a little extra leg and thigh action. Not that Toni is a stranger to the high slit dress.

Tamar’s dress from Steven Khalil‘s store was spectacular on its own.

We also spotted one of our OG (original) Bumpwatch mom’s Garcelle Beauvais.

Courtney Mazza accompanied her TV host hubby Mario Lopez as well.

She Didn’t Know the Baby She Bought Illegally after Faking Her Pregnancy Would Be Half Black

img_5072

Police arrested an Italian woman who faked her pregnancy, bought a baby and then returned the baby after discovering it was half black.

The 35-year old woman suffered two miscarriages after she previously got pregnant with her boyfriend, who is in prison, according to officials in a town south of Rome.

She told police she wore a fake latex belly bought online to trick her friends and family into thinking she was pregnant.

The woman, who has not been named, allegedly paid a little over $21,000 for the baby girl but gave her back three days later when the baby delivered was of mixed race.

She told police she would have no way of explaining the baby’s skin color to her man, her fam and friends so she gave her back.

Thing is–surrogacy is illegal in Italy and punishable by two years in prison and heafty fines.

Authorities got suspicious when someone called the birth registry office asking how to register a baby born home but that person  failed to show up for the scheduled appointment to register the baby.

Police found the baby in good health with her  biological father, a Mali man who works in Rome.

That African man apparently had a brief relationship with a 25-year old Romanian woman who is the baby’s biological mom, the supposed surrogate.

That mom and a Moroccan man who helped broker the sale of the baby were also arrested along with the fake mom.

The one-month-old baby girl is believed to have been placed in foster care.

Given the #WHCD was Light on Celebs This Year, Let’s Look Back At Celebs Who Walked Its Red Carpet Pregnant

The annual White House Correspondents Association dinner has increasingly been a haven for Hollywood Celebrities who walk the red carpet on their way to hob nob with journalism’s elite that cover the White House.

This year was much different.

The current sitting president Donald J. Trump choose to sit it out, a first time since Ronald Reagan  that a President opted to skip the event which usually features a comedian roasting the prez and the media and the pres himself giving a monologue full of self-deprecating humor.

[Even when Reagan skipped it, that was because he was shot on the way in, though to be fair other presidents who were very unpopular at the time Jimmy Carter and Richard Nixon have skipped the elite dinner in the past, the only other two since Calvin Coolidge]

This year, the event was also super light on the usual parade of celebrities. That might be a good thing in the eyes of many who have heavily criticized the dinner for becoming to glamourized and Hollywoodized.  Celebrated national TV broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw famously skips it and has been vocal as to his reasons why.

Nonetheless, we usually can spot several celebrity moms we’ve covered in the past to feature on the blog. In the very recent past 8 years, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kristen Bell, Jessica Simpson, Cynthian Nixon, Adriana Lima, Neve Campbell, Emma Watson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina King, Anna Chlumsky, Julianna Margulies, Katie Couric, Sofia Vergara, Shonda Rhimes, Rosario Dawson, Candace Cameron Bure, model Emily Ratajowski, Vivica A. Fox, Lupita Nyong’o, Jada Pinkett and Will Smith, Kendell Jenner, Laverne Cox, Lucy Liu, Gabrielle Union have all attended as guests of various news organizations that purchase tables.

Not this year. We didn’t see any. There were a few celebs and some of DC’s A-listers [read: TV journalists and broadcast reporters] there but that’s about it.  And with Trump declaring war on the media, the White House press corp and DC establishment, none in his administration or celebs friendly to him failed to show up as well.

So…we’re doing the next best thing and flashbacking to all the ones who did show up in years past. Interesting enough, most of them were preggers at the time!

Last year, in 2016, while pregnant with her second child, daughter, Isabella, Kerry Washington attempted to conceal her bump in an A-line one shoulder black mini Victoria Beckham mini dress.

In 2015, Glee alum Naya Rivera looked radiant in a white floor length  Tadashi Shoji evening gown and model Anne V ‘s lovely floral gown rocked that year as well.

In 2014, TODAY show anchor Savannah Guthrie was six-months pregnant with her first child when she showed up in a pink dress to the event.

Going further back, Anna Paquin was expecting her first children, a pair of twins, with husband Stephen Moyer in 2011 when she attended the event, also affectionately known as the “Nerd Prom”, wearing a chic and elegant silk jersey gown by French designer Herve L. Leroux.

That same year, Reese Witherspoon was also expecting her third child, but first with second husband Jim Toth. She also went with black in a Monique Lhuillier  gown showing her barely there bump at the time.

There you have it! The White House Correspondents Association dinner  has been noteworthy for Bumpwatch coverage history.

9 Things Parents Think are Harmless That could Land Them in Jail

img_5059

Parenting is a tough job under the best of circumstances, but there are things that can get mothers into legal trouble today that wouldn’t have been frowned upon at all in previous generations.

While some of the transgressions on this list are far more serious than others, all of them can lead to trouble with the law if you’re discovered behaving in such a manner.

1. Leave Kids in the Car Unattended – This may seem like something a good parent would never do, but it’s actually far more common than you might realize. News reports tell of kids who were left in the car and died due to heat stroke or freezing on a regular basis, many of which never make it past the local level of news outlets. You probably think that you would never do such a thing to your child, but then may make exceptions when situations seem to call for them. Even attentive, dedicated parents will leave their kids unattended for “just a second” to run into the store or drop something off, never realizing the danger. Leaving your child in the car unattended for any reason is not acceptable, and can lead to very serious legal trouble if you’re discovered.

2. Fail to Use Proper Vehicle Restraints – Some police officers get very riled up when they see parents driving with kids unbuckled or not in the proper car seat for their weight and height. Most parents have encountered times when the kid just didn’t want to stay in the car seat, and may even consider letting them briefly take the belt off. It can be very stressful, but it is much better to stop and handle the situation rather than let your child remove the seatbelt.

3. Spank Them – “Spare the rod and spoil the child” is an axiom that older generations grew up with. Now, in many states, spanking is banned. Some parents have had to deal with Child Protective Services as a result of physically hitting their child in public. Whether or not you believe spanking is acceptable, knowing the laws in your state is still a wise move.

4. Leave Children Home Alone – Getting the mail or going down the hall of your apartment building to do the laundry may not seem like such a big deal, but in many states leaving young children alone for any length of time is a problem. In reality, it doesn’t take long at all for a tragedy to occur with unsupervised little ones. Even though it may be inconvenient, it’s best to either take the child with you or wait until someone else is in the home and can watch him.

5. Use an Underage Babysitter – Some states have laws regarding the appropriate age for babysitters. Years ago, preteens could make pocket money by sitting for younger kids. That’s not the case anymore. There are guidelines and rules for sitters that are established on the state level. For example, if you live in Illinois, leaving your 14-year-old alone for an “unreasonable period of time” will put you on the wrong side of the law. A few states away in Maryland, however, 13-year-olds are able to babysit infants. Check your local laws to find out what’s acceptable in your state.

6. Breastfeed in Public –There is much being done in support of breastfeeding, but in many areas it is still against the law for a mom to nurse her child in a public place. It does sound ludicrous that a parent can get in trouble for feeding her child in public, but it’s better to know and abide by the rules and work to change them then to get in trouble for bucking the system.

7. Allow Kids to Drink – While some families allow their children to have a taste of wine at special meals, it is illegal for minors to drink in every state. There are some parents who believe that they are heading off trouble by allowing their kids to drink at home, but they could actually be courting trouble of the legal variety. Some parents feel that teens are going to drink regardless of permission, and that teenagers under the influence are safer at home than sneaking around. It’s still against the law and parents can get in big trouble by condoning underage drinking.

8. Inappropriately Defend a Child – Occasionally, the news media will do a story about a Mom being hauled off by the officers for getting out of control. Unfortunately, it’s not so unusual for some parents to get overly involved in the outcome of their child’s sporting event or group outing, causing embarrassment to the child and disrupting event. When this behavior gets out of hand to a worrisome degree, law enforcement often becomes involved. It’s better to keep a level head at the little league game, even when the ump makes a bad call.

9. Permit Truancy – Whether it’s through fault of the child or the parent, failure to force compliance with school attendance guidelines is a serious legal issue for parents. Some kids will manipulate their parents into letting them stay home, or they may just skip school on their own. There are also over-protective moms who keep their children home at the first sign of any cough or cold. Too much missed school can lead to truancy charges, and that can lead to a visit with legal officials. If a child has valid reasons for missing a lot of school, arrangements need to be made so that authorities are aware of the circumstances.

You may not even be aware of the fact that you are breaking the law in some cases, as you feel that you’re making appropriate choices for your child and household.

It’s best to check the laws in your state to make sure you are in compliance, especially in the realm of leaving the kids home alone and using disciplinary tactics.
