mccaughey septeplets

The world’s first surviving septuplets have graduated from their Iowa high school this weekend.

Yesterday, Alexis, Brandon, Joel, Kelsey, Kenny, Natalie and Nathan McCaughey all crossed the stage as part of Carlisle High School’s class of 2016.

The septuplets were born Nov. 19, 1997, ranging in weight from 2 pounds, 5 ounces to 3 pounds, 4 ounces. Their mother had taken a fertility drug.

KCCI-TV in Des Moines reports that the septuplets are going on separate paths following high school, including the military and college. The station says two of the seven plan to attend Hannibal-LaGrange University in Missouri, where their parents say they were promised a free education.

The 10 Reasons Why It’s Not A Good Idea to ‘Let’ Your Kid Win at Sports

picnoi-soccer

I just came home from my kids’ sports banquet and one thing, I noticed is that there were special awards given to outstanding players and all kids didn’t get a trophy just for participating (they got certificates but not trophies). A big thing about this next generation of children is that they are growing up to expect an award for just showing up. In life, that’s not how it works. Therefore, it’s a great idea to start out showing your children the importance of trying hard.

Check out 10 reasons to not LET your child win a game.

  1. Win at all costs: Letting your child win once in a while isn’t going to hurt anything, but make sure they don’t know you are letting them win.  That will send the wrong message.  You don’t want your child to think that it’s okay to change the rules just so you can win or that winning is more important than following the rules.
  2. Lose gracefully: A very important lesson to teach your children is how to lose gracefully.  If you let your child know that it’s okay to lose as long as you tried your hardest they will learn how to lose gracefully.  They will lose at things from time to time, but it’s more important to handle defeat well.  Make sure that everyone congratulates the winner at the end of the game.
  3. Start on level ground: If you feel like you need to ‘let’ your child win at a game that means that maybe you weren’t on equal footing from the start.  You know how they give golfers a handicap?  You might want to spot your child a few points or set up the game so that everyone has an equal chance to win while still playing by the rules.
  4. Winning fairly feels great: Children are very smart and will spot that you are letting them win.  If this happens then you will be robbing your child of the thrill of victory.  When your child wins fair and square it will mean a lot more to them then having you let them win.
  5. Learning to compete: When you allow your child to play the game they will learn over time what to do and then they will start playing with strategy.  Strategy can be taught at a very early age and this knowledge will flow over into other aspects of their life.
  6. Entitlement issues: One of the biggest things I’ve seen with this generation is this ‘sense of entitlement’ that kids seem to have these days.  I wonder if it doesn’t stem back to taking away winning and losing at school, birthday parties, rec sports etc.  If you let them win then they will feel like everyone should do that and that they are entitled to win no matter how much effort they put forth.
  7. Improving skills: Losing will motivate your child to try harder next time and encourage them to practice and improve their skills so that next time they have a better chance at winning the game on their own.
  8. Focus on the joy of the game: If you focus on having fun during the game then it won’t matter who wins and who loses, just how much fun you had playing the game.  If you can teach your child to enjoy the ride then it will allow them not to take defeat too hard.
  9. Reality check: Kids will lose occasionally and that is just a fact of life.  Letting your child win does not prepare them for the real world.  I love to win and I’m pretty disappointed when I lose, but from an early age I had a taste of both.  Even at birthday parties, someone won the game of pin the tail on the donkey and we didn’t all go home with a prize.  These are the facts of life and the sooner kids learn that life is not fair the better off they will be.
  10. Play a variety of games:  Instead of rigging the game so that your child wins, why don’t you play different kinds of games?  There are games that stress playing as a team and everyone plays against the board instead of each other.  Or games of chance where rolling the dice or picking a card is just random chance and everyone has the same chance of winning.

Good luck, parents!

4 Weekend De-Clutter Tips For Families

cotton-swabs-592146_640

Weekend is the best time to work on your Spring Cleaning projects. Here are four things to consider for today or upcoming weekends to organize your home with tips curated from the Goodwill of Chesapeake to help you out.

1. Clean out the closets. You never know what you are going to find. As you dive into the deepest corners of your closet, our suggestion is to focus on one category at a time: clothes first, shoes second. Put the keepers in their new permanent places before moving on to a new category. Be vigilant. Unless it holds deep meaning, donate it or toss it.

2. Create piles.Create one pile for trash (sweater with spaghetti stain), one for donations (sweater that you’ve only worn once), and one for keepers, which you will organize later. Better yet, make it a family affair. De-cluttering really can be a fun activity. Ask each person in your family to gather every item of clothing that they own and pile it in a designated area.

3. Get rid of gadgets. You replaced that desktop computer with a laptop a couple years ago, but the dinosaur still sits in your home office. Let it go.  Many Goodwill shops accept computers, printers, monitors, keyboards, mice, portable DVD players, and other electronics. By donating your computer to someone in need, you are giving someone a chance that – due to illness or other barriers – may not have otherwise had one.

4. Don’t neglect the kitchen. If you have five identical baking sheets, or an unruly coffee mug collection, you can stand to lose a few things. Remember, all of your donations make a difference. Think about the greater good. If you’ve never used that salad spinner that Mom gave you, thank her for the gift and pass it along. A lot of drop off locations accept cookware, glassware, small appliances, and tablecloths in good condition.

Congress has in place recommendations and rules that limits the way the American flag is displayed and used, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac. For example, it should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise; it should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free; should never have anything placed on it; and never  advertising purpose, nor embroidered on cushions or handkerchiefs, printed on paper napkins or boxes, nor used as any portion of a costume.

That doesn’t stop make up and nail polish design aficionados from using the colors and Old Glory to inspire their designs and looks. Here is a collection of unique interpretations from our Pinterest following.

Wouldn’t You Know,Three Celeb MEN founded A Pregnancy App

From the minds of three men comes the lastest pregnancy app.

Actors Justin Baldoni and Travis Van Winkle, and rocker Travis Clark recently created a new app called “BellyBump” that lets you create time-lapse videos of your growing bump during pregnancy.

Baldoni, star of Jane the Virgin, said he thought up the idea for the app after seeing some popular viral time-lapse apps on YouTube.

But it was too late for him to do a similar vid when his wife actress Emily Foxler was expecting.

“Before I knew it, [Emily] was 9 months pregnant,” Baldoni says. “And so I thought it would be cool if we could create an app that helped women capture their pregnancy and then share it in a really unique and simple way.”

The BellyBump app costs $2.99 at the Apple storeEnter BellyBump has a movable outline that lets you line up your eyes and belly in the same location, an adjustable opacity feature so your photo matches the day to day, scheduled reminders and the ability to customize your video with an original song by Clark or a song from your own library.

We’ve been promised a trial app and will let you guys know how well it works when we check it out.

Comparing the Best and Worst

The average flight to a popular summer destination costs $304, lasts four hours and 28 minutes, and has 0.5 connections.

The Las Vegas metro area is the most attractive destination on the West Coast and the New York metro area on the East Coast.

California, South Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma are home to the top summer destinations in the U.S., each with at least two metro areas in the top 15. Oppositely, Connecticut and New York are each home to the largest numbers of the most unpopular summer destinations.

The Charleston, S.C., metro area has the lowest cost of a three-star hotel, $31, which is nearly six times less expensive than in Cleveland, the metro area with the highest, $184.

The Salt Lake City metro area has the most diversity of attractions, which is two times more than in Akron, Ohio, the metro area with the lowest.

We Love These 7 Baby-wearing Celeb Dads who Choose Slings over Carriers

We think we can all agree that there is nothing sexier than a dad baby-wearing.

I am a fan of slings over the popular carriers which I dislike because they force baby’s legs open in an unnatural position that can stunt a baby’s mobility and development.

Sling carriers support the natural curvature of a baby’s spine and can be worn from infancy until toddlerhood. I cringe when I see people place newborns in those carriers despite the labels that say they should only be in them after they can hold up their head on their own.

Thus, I loved seeing those baby-wearing celeb dads that have chosen the slings over the carriers like Jay-Z carrying baby Blue Ivy, Cam Gigandet toting baby Everleigh Rae across his midsection and Channing Tatum with then 5-week old Everly.

Liev Schreiber loved so protective with  his newborn baby Alexander in a Mamma’s Milk baby sling back in 2007.

Christopher Jarecki kept his baby Bear Blu snug when the two visited mom Alicia Silverstone on set.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka are two sling-wearing dads with their  twins Harper and Gideon.

Eco-Friday: 20 Memorial Day Eco-Friendly Grilling Tips

grilling
It’s Memorial Day weekend and many families around the US may be hosting barbecues and cook-outs in celebration of the holiday remembering fallen soldiers of war or military servicemen who have passed away. As you prepare to host an event in your home, consider implementing some of these simple suggestions for having a Green, Eco-Friendly and Environmentally-friendly event.
  1. Plan ahead so you don’t have too much food.
  2. Use natural charcoal or better yet natural gas or propane grill which are more environmentally friendly.
  3. Buy local produce from local farmer’s markets
  4. Buy organic foods
  5. Consider vegan or vegatarian options which are better for the digestive system
  6. Use all natural insect repellant and bug sprays which are better on the skin, especially for small children
  7. Bring home the goods in a recyclable or paper not plastic bags
  8. Serve food on reusable plates and utensils or biodegradable or recyclable flat and tableware
  9. Start your fire with a chimney starter instead of lighter fluid
  10. Cook with pans and items made of recyclable materials
  11. Spread the energy consumed cooking around by having guests bring a dish
  12. Grill as much as you can, and even cook the foods in the burners on the grill because it saves energy
  13. Cover pans while cooking to reduce cooking time or energy bill if you are cooking on the stove in the kitchen
  14. Cut up the food into smaller pieces to let them cook faster and save energy
  15. Consider using a water-filter pitcher or a faucet mounted filter for water instead of bottle water
  16. Mix up a batch of lemonade or iced tea and serve in a large pitcher or punch bowl to cut down on cans and plastic bottles
  17. Figure out creative ways to “remix” the leftovers rather than dump them out.
  18. Compost the veggies or grill scraps.
  19. Clean up using non-toxic cleansers and Green cleaning products
  20. Recycle when you’re done!

Even if you can institute a few of these suggestions, you would have done at least something to reduce your carbon footprint, and give back to Mother Earth. Happy Grilling!
