How to Prep Your Home for Storm Season

Whether you’re new to the Souuth or have lived there your entire life, there really is nothing quite like witnessing a Southern storm at its angriest. Between the streaks of lightning, booms of thunder and rain that falls at a slant, there is a certain majesty when you watch a storm brew.

While these storms are fascinating to behold, they can also be damaging to your home and property. Prepare your house for storm season so that the next time one comes, you need to do nothing but enjoy it!

Batten Down the Hatches

Preparing your house to take a beating from Mother Nature is no small feat. Thanks to the heavy winds coming across the Atlantic Ocean, weather-proofing your house is essential during storm season. It doesn’t matter if the home is new construction or is a brick-and-mortar house from the 1600s, the same precautions should be taken.

  • Exterior buildings should be heavy-duty and made from durable materials like SteelMaster framing. This includes outbuildings like sheds, garages, workshops and greenhouses.
  • Storm shutters do more than add Southern charm to your windows; they serve the oh-so-practical purpose of protecting your windows from shattering in heavy winds. Make sure that your storm shutters are in good working order with reliable hinges and lock systems on them.
  • The South can be prone to flooding thanks to its hard grounds and torrential rain, so get sump pumps and water drainage systems in place.

Prepare the Inside

Your house is protected, now you need to focus on your family. In case the power goes out for a few days, will you and your family be okay during that time?

  • Pack an emergency kit and include common-sense items like a first aid kit, warm clothes, flashlights and extra batteries.
  • Don’t forget about entertainment for the little ones while they’re unplugged! Think about items like board games, coloring books, small toys and art supplies.
  • Will you be warm enough for the next few days? Be sure that you have plenty of heavy blankets and sweatshirts clean. You might be without heat for a while!

Prepare the Outside

You need to remember your yard as part of the equation when you’re preparing for a storm. Get it as ready as you can so that less damage is done during a particularly bad one.

  • Put lawn furniture away until next spring. As summertime ends and the rainy seasons begin it’s time to say goodbye anyway, so move everything off of the patio and into one of your sheds or garage.
  • Trim back any trees or worrisome branches in case of heavy winds. The last thing you want is for a branch to come flying through your living room window!
  • Put away anything in your yard that could potentially fly away during a storm: Umbrellas, toys, yard tools and the like.

Any Southerner can look at the color of grey that the sky is and tell you what kind of storm is brewing. Understand the risks involved with these amazingly violent storms and prepare your home and family as best you can.

After 10 Boys, Couple Welcomes First Baby Girl

After first becoming a mother to a bouncing baby boy when she was 22, Alexis went on to have nine more babies over the next 15 years – all of them male.

In fact, she and husband David were the first British couple known to have had ten boys in a row.

But now something truly astonishing has arrived in the Brett household: a baby girl.

Cradling her new arrival last night, Alexis, 39, told The Daily Mail on Sunday: ‘We’re over the moon. I’d been expecting to hear we were having another boy but when I found out it was a girl, my face was a picture. I was shocked but delighted. Now she’s here with us, it’s a fantastic feeling.’

The birth of her daughter, named Cameron after the actress Cameron Diaz, has already had a remarkable effect on the lives of her brothers, whose ages range from 17 to two.

David, 44, a train driver, said: ‘She’s already having a good influence on the boys. They have generally been much better behaved around her, trying to keep quiet in case they wake her up. They also want to help with holding and feeding her. It’s been great.’

Cameron’s arrival on August 27 – weighing 7 lb 2oz – marks the completion, the couple insist, of their large family, which includes Campbell, 17, Harrison, 16, Corey, 14, Lachlan, 11, Brodie, nine, Brahn, eight, Hunter, six, Mack, five, Blake, three, and Rothagaidh, two.

‘We’re definitely stopping now,’ laughs Alexis.

Watch Serena Williams’ US Open ‘This Mama Keeps Going’ Chase Ad

Twenty years ago, 23-Times Grand Slam Tennis Champ Serena Williams won her first US Open in 1999 and today longtime sponsor Chase Bank released a compelling ad on TV to commemorate that win as she continues on her post-motherhood journey to capture her 24th Title.

The last championship, she secured at the 2017 Australian Open while 7 weeks pregnant,

Thus, in a full-circle presentation, Chase brilliantly weaves the narratives of her athletic achievement and motherhood into the story of a singular life in the campaign video produced by Australian ad vet David Droga’s firm Droga5.

The advertisement is a continuation of a campaign the bank launched last year called “This Mama Keeps Going” and this time, a short film opens with a visual of a sonogram with background vocals. A reporter congratulating Williams.  The video continues with shots of never-before-seen very personal videos and photos from Williams’ pregnancy and in the voiceover, she shares her excitement and struggles.

Interspersed is footage of her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, who she welcomed on September 1, 2017 with hubby, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, and as the TV spot focuses in on Williams’ tough sojourn in recovery after a difficult delivery when she suffered from a pulmonary embolism. (Which immediately reminds us of her vocal advocacy  for expectant mothers, especially women of color, after birth in the US.),

She didn’t win in today’s US Open Finals though she battled and defeated a lot of excellent players, losing to the younger version of herself, a stellar Canadian upstart, 19-year old Bianca Andreescu, the battle continues.

Through scenes of breastfeeding, pumping and calming a fussy toddler, Williams speaks about the joy of watching a daughter succeed.

Only then does it become clear that her words are from a press conference after her very first Grand Slam win, 20 years ago at the U.S. Open in 1999.

How awesome!!

Organize Your Home For Back-To-School Success {A Guide}

It’s the start of a new school year in my home and I’m determined to make sure we have a smooth, clutter-free and positive school year.

As an avid believer in  and the positive impact of having a decluttered and organized home, I believe having an organization system and clutter and junk free home are essential for ensuring positive energy flow and clear thought.

I highly recommend that parents use the beginning of a school year as another excuse to get organized, not just for the school routine, but the family home in general.  So even if you did Spring or New Year cleaning, use the late summer/early fall to re-organize your life and priorities as well.

Even if your kids have already gone back, you can still get started. Here are some declutter and home organization tips that I’ve put together that I hope can help get you through the year.

Clean and Declutter the Kids Play, Work Rooms and Nursery.  Limit the number of toys and books in the kids room. Get rid of old broken toys. Give away old books and toys to the Salvation Army, Good Will or another family member with children younger than yours. Keep only a few of the favorite story books and the toys your child or children play with regularly. Don’t let them know you’re getting rid of the stuff they don’t even play with. They likely won’t even know it and you don’t need the headache of having them plea for you to keep it.

Infuse Calming Scents in the Home.  I’m a also a big believer in aromatheraphy and that scents guide the mood. Buy Glade or some other brand’s plugins to keep the air fresh and clean smelling. You can burn candles when you’re home or if you’re an incense type of person, those work too.  Consider using those with essential oils or scents such as chamomile, rose, vanilla and lavender. They are calming scents.

Thoroughly Clean the Room. Wash and Wipe down the walls, baseboards, windows and floors — with natural cleaners. Repair wall holes, cracks, squeaky windows, peeling paint. A clean home is great for fostering clear thoughts and just clarity, in general.

Set up Calendar and Chore Lists. Even if you’re a stay-at-home mom, you shouldn’t be doing all of the cleaning and upkeep. Set up a chore sheet for the refrigerator for after school chores. Also, start a new family calendar for keeping up with back to school nights, upcoming field trips, sports activities and other events so everyone knows what’s going on. If you’re the family manager as mom, you shouldn’t be the only one aware of what days are soccer practice.  Sitters, your spouse and house guests should too. Also, a chore list is great for keeping up the principles of feng shui which are all about clean spaces.

Keep Toys Dedicated to ONE area of the home (or maybe two) Avoid the chaotic mind that comes when you have toys and other things sprinkled in every nook and cranny of the home. Toys should be kept only to the play room, the kids room or one area of the apartment that is quartered off and situated with a toy chest, storage bin or some place where you can quickly toss all the toys hanging out all over the house. The tough part may be to stick to this one simple rule.

When the kids are not playing with a toy, there is really no need for it to be taking up space on the kitchen table or creating a tripping hazard for you or a guest. Either you, your partner or trained kids if they are old enough should make a concerted effort to gather all errant toys and keep them in the designated area.

It seems pretty intuitive, huh?

Over time, it will become a habit or second nature and you will find toys are not strewn about as much anymore. I do this with other areas of my home and life.  All papers, books, newspapers, invoices, magazines are usually put away in our home office.  All clothes go in a hamper, closet or bedroom.  Dishes, cups and silverware discovered anywhere in the house are picked up and taken in the kitchen

Think of this mantra:  “There is a place for Everything and Everything in its place.”

Organize the Paper Trails. Each year, families accumulate reports, information from school, permission slips and the such. It will get mixed in with bills, receipts, warranties and other paper that come into your life.

This Home Organization plan will make it easy for you:  Get a binder or two and dividers or one of those mega accordion file folders with tabs and divide them in the following categories:

Celebrity Mom and Baby Accessory Series: Katie Holmes

Following up on my review of Celeb women who wear their babies and kids as accessories, let’s go back to an Old School, G!

Before there was such a thing as a North West, a Blue Ivy and a Harper Beckham, all eyes were on Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise‘s daughter Suri.

There was even a now defunct website called What Suri Wore that chronicles the styles of a celeb baby as seen through paparazzi photos.

As she got older, occasionally, her mom would coordinate their clothing.

The above collage represents a few times Katie wore Suri quite stylishly and well!

Former Google Employee’s Pregnancy Discrimination Suit Moves Foreward

A former Google employee whose memo alleging discrimination against pregnant women went viral is moving forward with her claim against the company.

“As a Google employee I witnessed pregnancy discrimination, and then was faced with it in my own life,” Chelsey Glasson, who worked at the Mountain View, Calif. company for more than five years as a user research lead and manager, said in a statement Wednesday. “And, like so many women, I felt threatened by retaliation for reporting the discrimination. This memo, which I published internally at Google and has been read by over 11,000 Google employees, states clearly why we must continue to fight this bias.”

Glasson added that employees who bring up pregnancy discrimination are often silenced or forced to suffer consequences that damage their careers in the long term.

“With a goal of shedding light on pregnancy discrimination and advocating for needed public policy and other changes, I will move forward with legal action,” she writes.

Two Google employees who helped to organize the 20,000-strong global walkout also alleged that the tech giant retaliated against them — a claim that the search giant has denied. The massive walkout was in response to issues of sexual harassment, as well as pay inequity and racial justice.

THE PREGNANCY STRUGGLE!! ? Why don’t women talk about the realllllness of pregnancy!? …Everyone just talks about how much “they love being pregnant” .. the “good stuff” but where’s the truth!? Don’t get me wrong being able to become pregnant in the first place is a blessing and this whole experience has been life changing but LETS GET REALLY REAL FOR JUST A MOMENT! The third trimester for me has been SUCH A CHALLENGE! I mean, if you’re lucky to still be able to even bend over to put on your shoes. Shaving THIS IS THE JOKE OF THE CENTURY! Can I lift my leg high enough to see all the areas I’m shaving.. (I’ll let you answer that one lol) Also, there should be an Olympic sport for getting up from a low piece of furniture while in your third trimester. The lower the piece of furniture, the less graceful you’ll be. At times I look as graceful as a turtle stuck on his back, desperately trying to roll over onto its legs, it’s a real sight to see…. Laughing at this one because everyone says “get your sleep now” .. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? ? Because they must not have encountered the endless need to pee, the weird pains from shifting positions, the kicks that come in the middle of the night or the crazy dreams that make you wake up in a panic. Oh yeah, and there’s nothing like getting winded doing menial things like walking up a flight of stairs or grabbing something that’s slightly out of reach. BUT all these aches, all the pains and all the inconveniences are worth it. The third trimester is just one hurdle before the real prize. Just need to suck it up and before you know it, there’s a sweet baby in your arms making you (almost) forget all the things you struggled with near the end.. ??? WHAT ARE SOME STRUGGLES YOU FACED IN YOUR LAST TRIMESTER! (Comment below-Be real)

So You’re Shopping For a Wedding Dress and You have a Baby Bump?

bridal shoes and bouquet

Are you planning a fall or winter wedding while still expecting your bundle of joy because you want to be married before baby arrives?

If so, chances are, you may be fretting how you’ll look with a bulbous belly on your big day. Fortunately for you, a lot of wedding designers now cater to pregnant brides. Several styles you’ll find sold from mass producers can be retrofitted to accommodate a baby bump.

In fact, when you conduct a search  for wedding gowns online store, you’ll actually be surprised by the number of options out there. Compare the current situation to not long ago when brides-to-be who were simultaneously “moms-to-be” had very slim options.

The limits of styles, cuts, shapes and dimensions of dresses actually could cause a frustrated bride to give up.

As with bridesmaids dresses, a bride with a bump has to consider cut and shape and look for a gown or dress that flatters her body and her pregnant body.  Avoid going with large tent dresses that can actually dwarf you.

Instead, aim for an A-line but or a dress with an empire waistline. That cut actually is the most common. It looks and feels good and less constraining on a growing midsection.   Seriously consider opting for a bohemian wedding dress which would work perfectly for a more casual wedding, one on the beach or in a less formal venue.

Here are other things to consider

A. Comfort and Fit: Ultimately, you want a dress that flatters your figure and that you’ll feel great wearing. Look for a flowing empire-waisted gown, or a dress that can be ‘enhanced’ with an extra panel to accommodate that lovely baby bump of yours!

B. Alterations: Make sure you’ve got a good tailor who will be able to make last minute alterations a little bit in advance of the wedding date. As you know, all of those measurements are going to change. And then change some more.

C. Support: Speaking of those changing measurements, the right maternity bra can do wonders for a girl’s mood at a wedding, not to mention her back! Once you reach your third trimester, you will likely need to trade in those lacy bras and reach for something more substantial. Just don’t forget to make sure that your maternity bra works with your dress as the date nears.

Be mindful of your due date so if you’ve scheduled your wedding close to your delivery date, make sure all vendors have an option that preserves a portion of the deposit to be used after baby arrives.

Of course, consult with your doctor and ensure that the wedding venue is within a reasonable distance of your hospital or birthing center.

There is no hard fast rule you need to adhere to. Your comfort level and adherence to any style or fashion aesthetic or silhouette are the most important things to consider when shopping for your big day before your other big big day arrives!

Good luck!
