Oops! Birth Control Manufacturer Error May Lead to Some Unintended Pregnancies (RECALL)

There will be a bunch of unplanned babies possibly born about nine months from now on account of birth control pills manufacturer Allergan‘s major oopsie! The company placed four placebo pills incorrectly out of order in a batch of birth control pills it had released into the market, according to a recall.

The birth control pills package, called Taytulla, placed four placebo capsules as the first four days of therapy. In most packages, those first four pills would have been active contraceptives.

“The reversing of the order may not be apparent to either new users or previous users of the product, increasing the likelihood of taking the capsules out of order,” Allergan said in a news release. Capsules taken out of order can result in unintended pregnancy.

Any blog readers who are taking this brand should look into this very seriously. Certainly, in the past people have sued in court and won for unplanned births.

The recall covers nearly 170,000 sample packs with a 28-count blister card that has 24 “active” pink softgel capsules (with hormones) with “WC” printed on the outer shell in white to be taken for 24 days, followed by four maroon softgel capsules (without hormones) also imprinted with “WC” on one side to be taken for the next four days.

“As a result of this packaging error, oral contraceptive capsules, that are taken out of sequence, may place the user at risk for contraceptive failure and unintended pregnancy. The reversing of the order may not be apparent to either new users or previous users of the product, increasing the likelihood of taking the capsules out of order,” the FDA said.

Allergan is notifying customers and is arranging for the return of all recalled sample pack product with the lot #5620706 Exp. May 2019.

Consumers who have the sample pack product with the associated lot number should notify their physician to arrange a return. If patients have concerns regarding the possibility of an unintended pregnancy they should consult their physician.

Surprise! DC’s Mayor Muriel Bowser Adopted a Baby

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Monday night that she had adopted a baby, a process she said had started last year and “advanced much sooner than expected.”

The 45-year old unmarried politician stated in a release that she began he process of adopting a baby late last year, after deep thought.

“I decided to start the adoption journey, just knowing that it was a great time in my life and I had so much to share with a baby,” she said.

No further details were made available on the baby’s age, gender or name, but the mayor did add in her statement that she would be taking a week away from her daily duties  to “enjoy these precious moments with my new baby.”

She did tell a local CBS affiliate TV station WUSA9 that she is getting used to the unpredictability that is life with a baby.

“When you sit in the seat that I’m in, you’re used to being able to make things happen and babies have a way of letting you know that they’re in control,” Bowser told the starion. “I’m really just looking forward to being able to pour a lot of love and attention and affection on a baby and help the baby grow into a wonderful Washingtonian.”

Congrats to the new mom!

Colorado Marijuana Dispensaries are Telling Pregnant Women It’s Okay to Smoke Weed For Nausea

Medical Marijuana dispensaries are telling pregnant women it is okay to use marijuana to curb pregnancy-induced nausea and Morning Sickness.

Radio Boston’s WBUR.90‘s  health segment covered a new study where a mystery caller contacted 400 cannabis dispensaries in Colorado which voted to legalize marijuana in 2012 and said,”Hi, I’m eight weeks pregnant and feeling really nauseated” and asked “Are there any products that are recommended for morning sickness?”

The study turned up some striking results: Nearly 70 percent of the dispensaries recommended some sort of cannabis to cope with morning sickness in early pregnancy.

The recommendations being given by dispensaries are in direct contrast to the mainstream medical consensus. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists puts out clear guidelines saying that although the research is far from perfect and much remains unknown, there are enough concerning findings — in animals and children — that they recommend against cannabis use during pregnancy.

“There are concerns for fetal harm, mostly related to fetal growth, as well as some concerns from some more longitudinal studies for adverse brain development when babies are exposed in utero to marijuana,” says Dr. Torri Metz, a high-risk obstetrician at Denver Health Medical Center and senior author of the study in this month’s journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The concerns extend beyond smoking to other modes of consuming cannabis, she adds, because all of them send the chemical compound THC into the mother’s bloodstream, and it crosses into the placenta.

Here is some of the VERY bad advice the dispensary workers told the mystery pregnant caller:

• “Edibles would not hurt the child. They would be going through the digestional tract.”

• “[A]s long as you are not heavily, harshly smoking — like the smoke, I think that is the only way it could physically damage the baby, cause you are inhaling smoke.”

• “When I was pregnant and started to feel a little nausea coming on, I did not smoke more than two times a day.”

Per WHUR’s report:

Some of the staffers did note that the packaging of cannabis products in Colorado is required to display warnings of increased risks for pregnant and breastfeeding women. But staffers often recommended cannabis nonetheless, the study found.

Dr. Metz says the findings highlighted “themes of distrust” among dispensary staffers toward mainstream medical guidelines.

“It was disheartening to hear some of the ideas being promoted — that you shouldn’t listen to your doctor, and people were not encouraging women to speak with their physicians,” she says.

But, Metz adds, the study has prompted widespread discussion in Colorado, and public health staffers are hoping to work with the cannabis industry more to get onto the same page about discouraging pregnant women from using cannabis.

“I think the first step was really just being able to say, ‘Hey, look, this is the advice that’s being given,’ and now there’s a real opportunity here for education,” she says. “I’m hoping that at least the word gets out to women that we don’t recommend marijuana during pregnancy.”

A marijuana industry spokesperson told Colorado Public Radio that the industry does tell dispensaries to suggest medical consultations with doctors, and the study tells the industry that dispensary staffs need better training.

These Pregnancy Apps Are Out Here Giving Bad Advice, Causing Eating Disorders

Popular pregnancy apps could be wrongly telling women to cut foods from their diet and could encouraging eating disorders, health experts have warned.

Telegraph investigation found a number of smartphone apps, which have been downloaded thousands of times are offering women advice inconsistent with NHS guidance on what to eat while pregnant.

Items wrongly included on lists of “foods to avoid” were chamomile tea, tuna  sandwiches, eggs, soda and pepperoni pizza.

According to the NHS, women should avoid raw meat, mould-ripened soft cheeses, alcohol, certain types of fish, liver and pate. Canned tuna is safe to eat but should be limited to four cans per week.

It also provides nutritional guidance…

All About Newborn Hypoxia: A Little Known Birth Defect

Having a baby is the greatest miracle we can ever be a part of, and from the moment you find out you are expecting you will be hit with a rush of emotions, a ton of information and plenty of classes to prepare you for the birth.

Unfortunately though, no matter how much we prepare with books, classes and healthy habits, sometimes things will happen during the birth. There are many different things which can go wrong during a birth, but the one we are going to mention today is known as newborn hypoxia.

Hypoxia is a condition which occurs when oxygen is unable to reach the tissue inside the body. It will happen either just before or just after the birth, and can be detrimental for your child’s health. The main issue which arises from this condition is that your child is rendered unable to breath for a period of time, and this starves the brain of the oxygen it needs. As a result, brain cells can lerish, and health issues such as cerebral palsy can be the result.

How does it happen?

It is heartbreaking to think about hypoxia during birth because it is often a condition which is explained by your lifestyle habits during the pregnancy, or it can be the fault of the doctors and nurses for not monitoring the foetus well enough during the pregnancy. If the issue does seem to be the fault of medical staff during the pregnancy, then you can get yourself some legal help for newborn hypoxia during birth. If you are not sure who is at fault for the issue, here are some of the lifestyle choices which may affect your child’s ability to breathe:

  • smoking
  • brain injury
  • anemia
  • Birth asphyxia

If any of these apply to you, you may not be able to ask for legal help when you child suffers during their birth.

What are the long term effects?

When your child suffers from hypoxia during their birth, there are a number of things which can happen as a result. Depending on how long it has been since your child could breathe, the effects may not be as severe as the ones listed below, however it is still an issue which is incredibly scary for any new parent to go through.

  • Cerebral palsy (CP)
  • Severe seizures
  • Cognitive disabilities
  • Behavioral disorders

How do you treat it?

Believe it or not, one of the best ways to treat hypoxia is by inducing the child with Hypothermia. This might seem like a problem waiting to happen but it can slow the child’s body functions and therefore preserve their life, as well as reducing the effects which less oxygen will have on the body. As long as your child has this treatment within 6 hours of giving birth, you should be able to prevent some of the more serious implications that this condition can have. You’ll be able to be safe in the knowledge that your child is safe, healthy and happy.

Herbal Essences Faces Backlash Over #PregnantWomenCan Campaign

Beauty brand Herbal Essences had great intentions when it  partnered with over 100 influencers, including the brand’s celebrity hairstylist Bridget Brager, Laura Reynoso of Spanglish Fashion, and Lady Antebellum’s Hillary Scott. They countered a prevailing notion that pregnant women are fragile beings and thus, the campaigned asked them to share the amazing things they were able to accomplish while pregnant.

With partnership with Wakefield Research, Herbal Essence sought to uncover what types of unsolicited advice pregnant women get while expecting. More than 60 percent were advised not to exercise when they were carrying, even though exercise is totally safe for most pregnant women, and 59 percent said they were told not to eat the same foods. And nearly 50 percent were told not to complete the same household chores

To prove that pregnancy doesn’t mean slowing down necessarily, the brand released a vide that highlights what real women were able to accomplish while pregnant despite often hearing that they “can’t.” In it,  pregnant women are seen working, lifting, dancing, surfing, performing, and more.

Problem: a lot of the activities are not necessarily safe for the babies in the pregnant women’s belly, hence the backlash in social media and among online viewers of the video.

“Just stop. Pregnant women can do most of those things, but shouldn’t,” one commenter wrote in the YouTube comment section to the campaign ad. “They are weaker than their average self, and shouldn’t risk their child’s life just for some dumb movement. Its like these people who text in drive. They are like ‘im a good driver, so i won’t get into an accident’ but end up doing so.”

Another replied, “do exercise, yes, but don’t overdo yourself. You still need energy to have your child.”

Some spoke about how their jobs actually required them to take it easy.

“When I was pregnant I worked as a CNA, and when I informed my charge nurse I was pregnant, she put me on light work,” one commenter said. “I had to take it easy, needed 2 people at all times to do any sort of heavy lifting, etc. Then when I was around 32 weeks along they wouldn’t let me work anymore, FOR THE BABIES SAFETY”

And one totally relatable: “What kind of a woman surfs when she is pregnant? Completely irresponsible.”

The advise from random people may be off base, but recommendations from physicians and medical institutions should be given more weight. For example, the Mayo Clinic suggests pregnant women consider avoiding:

  • Any exercises that force you to lie flat on your back after your first trimester
  • Scuba diving, which could put your baby at risk of decompression sickness
  • Contact sports, such as ice hockey, soccer, basketball and volleyball
  • Activities that pose a high risk of falling — such as downhill skiing, in-line skating, gymnastics, and horseback riding
  • Activities that could cause you to hit water with great force, such as water skiing, surfing and diving
  • Exercise at high altitude
  • Activities that could cause you to experience direct trauma to the abdomen, such as kickboxing
  • Hot yoga or hot Pilates
If you do exercise at a high altitude, make sure you know the signs and symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headache and nausea. We’ve covered pregnant women who have faced backlash for weightlifting, running marathons, ice skating, or just exercising a lot, as a lot of celebs who do so are shamed online about.

We haven’t heard from any response from Herbal Essences to their well-meaning campaign.  Maybe they’ll just let it blow over.

Turn in C-Section Pain Meds at DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Attention all you new moms who have had c-section deliveries and have left over Percocet, Endocet, Motrin 1600 and other pain medication!

You Guys can help the US fight the opioid abuse crisis by turning them in this weekend at the Drug Enforcement Agency’s annual  National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The federal agency is  partnering with local and state law enforcement agencies across the nation to get unwanted prescription drugs out of homes.

It’s all happening on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This is the 15th opportunity in seven years to prevent pill abuse by ridding homes of potentially dangerous, expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs.

Anyone who wants to get rid of them can take them to several locations, found on the DEATakeBack website, to turn in the pills for free with no questions asked. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles or sharps, only pills or patches.

Last fall, Americans turned in more than 900,000 pounds of prescription drugs at 5,00 sites operated by the DEA and 4,300 of its state and law enforcement partners.

Overall, in 14 take back events, they have taken in ore than 9 million pounds of pills.

MIT’s Early Childhood Lab Is Reinventing Research Collection To Be More Inclusive

Every family is different, but right now, most developmental studies look at kids from very rich, two-parent households near major universities – which is far from the “norm” in the US.

My family and I have participated in a longitudinal study that requires in lab visits so I really could appreciate learning of a new online tool of MIT’s Early Childhood Cognition Lab. The new online project called Lookit.  According to its managers, the goal of Lookit is to better understand how children think by letting families contribute to research from the comfort of their own home.

Parents and children participate by doing quick activities in a web browser on their home computer, and researchers later analyze the webcam video of the child’s responses.

The purpose of Lookit is to make research more accessible to the public. Families can participate in studies whenever and wherever, instead of having to come to a lab. That means scientists can observe more natural behavior, and all families  (not just affluent nuclear ones) can be represented.

Lookit is looking for babies for their “Baby Euclid” (6.5-7.5 months old) and “Your baby, the physicist” (4-12 months old) studies. If you have a baby that’s the perfect age for either of the studies, it would be great for him/her to participate!

In the Baby Euclid study, your child will be shown a series of triangles that magically change over time–researchers are interested in seeing which changes are the most interesting to your baby.

In the physics study, your child will be shown pairs of events – in one, something normal happens (a ball rolls off of a table and falls down) and in the other, something impossible happens (a ball rolls off of a table and falls up!). Where your baby chooses to look can help show his/her expectations of how the physical world works.

Lookit studies are quick and fun for your baby, and the information gathered through this research is incredibly helpful in advancing our understanding of how children think.

Check out the Lookit site to learn more or get started!

International Adoption Is On a Downward Trend, In Flux

The state of international adoption is in flux and has been the topic of a lot of policy discussions and decisions.

For example, just this past January, Ethiopia, the country with the highest number of adoption by Americans, made the decision to ban foreign adoptions, citing concerns about the safety of Ethiopian children.  High profile abuse cases triggered the move, including the 2011 death of an adopted Ethiopian child who died of hypothermia after being left outside in the cold.

When the nation made the decision, Ethiopia was second only to China as the most popular country for adoptions by Americans. Since then, the U.S. and Ethiopia made adoption requirements more stringent and the number of Ethiopian children adopted by Americans plummeted from 2,511 in 2010 to 133 in 2016, according to the State Department.

The determination by the US State Department to scale it back has caught the ire of adoption advocate Nathan Gwilliam – the owner of adoption.com, adoption.org,adopting.org and others who think that children are dying in orphanages while there are families here in the US who want to adopt but cannot adopt because of the State Department regulations.

It is true that international adoptions have declined by 81%,  from about 23,000 international adoptions in 2004 through the forecast numbers of 4,200 international adoptions in 2018. If this trend line continues international adoption in America may end by 2022.

Gwilliam believes that adoption should be less complex and less expensive and a Dave Thomas Foundation survey showed that 85 million Americans have considered adoption. Two of the biggest reasons why people don’t complete an adoption are the cost and the complexity.

Policy, legislation and pushback from some foreign nations are making international adoptions more and more difficult and soon may be a thing of the past.
