STUDY: Men too Get Insomnia, Depression During Spouse’s Pregnancy

During pregnancy, women and their male partners sometimes report insomnia or insufficient sleep, which may be tied to depression, according to a new study.

Almost half of women reported that they slept more than usual during pregnancy, but did not have better quality sleep, said senior author Tiina Paunio of Helsinki University Hospital in Finland.

Overall, 12 percent of women and 15 percent of men had either insomnia or too little sleep, researchers found.

“The results are well in line with those obtained from previous studies for pregnant women: symptoms of insomnia and, in particular, frequent nocturnal awakenings were very common, and a majority of the women (over 80 percent) also reported that their sleep quality had worsened during pregnancy,” Paunio said.

The researchers studied a population of 1,667 mothers and 1,498 fathers in Finland who were part of a long-term study. Participants were recruited during pregnancy when almost half were expecting their first child. They provided data before their child’s birth and several more times in the baby’s first 24 months of life.

13 Brides Breastfeeding In Their Wedding Dresses

mom-breastfeeding
Last summer, Canadian mom Christina Torino-Benton became a viral star when a professional  photo of her  breastfeeding her baby in her wedding dress spread widely on the Internet.

Before heading down the aisle to marry the  love of her life Danny Benton in Montreal on June 18, 2016, the couple’s exclusively breastfed 9 month-old daughter, Gemma, served as one of the flower girls.

Torino-Benton told SELF that Gemma had a quick feeding while she was getting ready for the big day.

But because of the noon wedding, Gemma missed her 12 o’clock nap. “Which was a bad choice,” Torino-Benton says.

When the bride got to the Resurrection of Our Lord Church for the ceremony, Gemma seemed fine.

“She went down the aisle with my other daughter Olivia—they were both flower girls,” Torino-Benton says. “My mom took Gemma in her lap and she was OK.”

But then she started fussing 15 minutes into the hour-long Catholic ceremony, Gemma started crying.

“I couldn’t really concentrate and I was just looking back at her, because I don’t let her cry ever, so it was painful,” she said. “I looked at my mom kind of saying, ‘Give her to me’ and she did.”

And then, without hesitation, Torino-Benton started to breastfeed Gemma during the ceremony.

“I look over at Danny, and he just smiled and I fed her,” she said. “It was really discreet. My dress was strapless so I was able to pull it down without anyone really noticing. [Gemma] fell asleep probably within five or 10 minutes, and I passed her back to my father-in law and she slept through the remainder of the ceremony.”

While the motherly moment might have been discreet to the other guests, Torino-Benton’s wedding photographer, Lana Nimmons, caught the touching event on camera.

The Tuesday after the wedding, Torino-Benton posted the photo of her breastfeeding at the altar to a breastfeeding support group onFacebook, captioning the pic, “That moment when you’re getting married and your baby gets hungry.” Now, the photo’s gone viral, with more than 7,000 likes.

“It got way more response than I thought,” Torino-Benton remarked. “It’s really cool. I’m really proud of my photo.”

The feedback from the image was mainly positive.

“If I could breastfeed in a Catholic church during a wedding, maybe other women will feel more comfortable to do the same just about anywhere,” she added. “You should be able to feed your baby no matter where you are, I don’t think anywhere should be considered inappropriate.”

And that image on that page empowered at least 12 other women to share publicly on the page their photoblog themselves breastfeeding in their  wedding dresses.

A 60-year old Indiana Woman Welcomed Twins Yesterday

When Claudette Cook of Indiana met her husband Ross at church 10 years ago, doctors told her that they would never have children because of her advanced age, but 10 years later at age 60, she is now a mom to twins.

Claudette and Ross got the go-ahead from an in vitro fertilization specialist last fall to start a family and a year later were successful and welcomed twin sons Isaac and Isaiah on Sunday, October 2.

“Isaac came out first, and Isaiah came out second,” Cook told the local news after she beat all the odds to welcome the fraternal twins.

“I cried. I was like, you know, you look at TV and you see other people in the delivery room and you’re like, oh my goodness. And, it was me. So, joy, it was so sweet,”  ABC News reported she said while holding her husband, Ross’s, hand. “Everything changed in that moment. Once they’re born, your life changes.”

The boys weighed 5 lbs each and arrived via C-Section. The couple gave credit to their tiny miracle to prayer.

“Doors started opening up, and BAM, here they are,” Cook said. “Age is but a number with God. Plus, I was healthy and in shape. I was like, yes, I know I can do this – I know I can. No matter how hard it was, He brought me through it all, so, awesome God.”

WFIE reports that it will be a couple of weeks before they can take their newborns home. The twins are healthy and their mother is doing just fine.

No doubt, this will and has been the subject of lots of water-cooler conversation today. Share your thoughts with us on social!

After Baby: 5 Quick Ways to Shred Belly Fat

belly fat

After having a baby, a lot of women struggle with toning up their mid-section and shedding unwanted fat in their belly. There is a common misconception that sit ups or other abdominal exercises alone will help tone the core.

To the contrary, says Clark Shao, YouTube star and certified personal trainer and fitness nutritionist.

Shao says to lose the most amount of unwanted fat, women should work out the largest muscle groups on the body – the butt and legs rather than doing sit-ups or crunches. While it is true that crunches will help to create lean muscle, it usually will be buried under the fat.

“As you develop your butt and legs these large muscles will need lots of energy to sustain themselves and will seek body fat as fuel,” Shao tells Bellyitch. “You will notice all those trouble areas shrinking (lower belly, love handles, butt, thighs and even the jiggly part on the backs of your arms!) because this is where all the excess fat is stored on the female body.”

Shao recommends trying a quick fitness routine first thing in the morning before you eat breakfast. It will energize you and is give your metabolism a boost that will keep you burning fat all day long. Here are the exercises and reps:

  • 20 Body Weight Squats
  • 20 Plie Squats (wider stance and toes pointed outward)
  • 20 Alternating Jumping Lunges (10 each side)
  • 20 Single Leg Calf Raises (10 each side)
  • 20 Mountain Climbers

1) Body Weight Squats:

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. You can place your hands behind your head. Begin the movement by flexing your knees and hips, sitting back with your hips. Continue down to full depth and quickly reverse the motion until you return to the starting position. As you squat, keep your head and chest up and push your knees out.

2) Plie Squats:

Move your legs so that they are wider than shoulder width apart from each other with your knees slightly bent. Your toes should be facing out. Slowly bend your knees and lower your legs until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Press mainly with the heel of the foot to bring the body back to the starting position while exhaling.

3) Alternating Jumping Lunges:

Assume a lunge stance position with one foot forward withthe knee bent, and the rear knee nearly touching the ground. Ensure that the front knee is over the midline of the foot. Extending through both legs, jump as high as possible, swinging your arms to gain lift. As you jump as high as you can, switch the position of your legs, moving your front leg to the back and the rear leg to the front. As you land, absorb the impact through the legs by adopting the lunge position, and repeat.

4) Single Calf Raises:

Stand on a flat surface or get a block, the ball of your foot should be resting on the edge of the block if you have one. Raise the other foot slightly off the floor or hook that foot around the opposite calf. Slowly raise your heel as high as it will go, pause and squeeze, then slowly bring it back down to touch the floor.

5) Mountain Climbers:

Begin in a push-up position, with your weight supported by your hands and toes. Flexing the knee and hip, bring one leg until the knee is approximately under the hip. This will be your starting position. Explosively reverse the positions of your legs, extending the bent leg until the leg is straight and supported by the toe, and bringing the other foot up with the hip and knee flexed. Repeat.

When you have completed all 5 exercises, this is one round.  Push yourself to see how many rounds of all 5 exercises you can do. If you do this 3-4 times a week, you’ll notice a difference in your energy, mood and body – particularly your belly – after just a few short weeks.  No matter where you start off, you’ll notice you’ll be able to do more as each week passes.

Good luck!

How to Keep it Spicy in the Bedroom During and Post Pregnancy

intimacy

Pregnant women and new moms often struggle with supporting their new identity as moms and balance it with intimacy with their partner. And sex during and post-pregnancy remains a taboo topic among women themselves.

One study found that health providers discussed contraception with 96 percent of women, but only 15 percent of those women voluntarily brought up sexual issues.

And what complicates things is that there isn’t any one general issue that all women endure, says Madison Young, sex educator, mother and author of the new book, The Ultimate Guide to Sex through Pregnancy and Motherhood.

“We are all unique sexual snowflakes and every mom’s journey into motherhood is different,” Young says. “But I’d say that one of the most common challenges I see amongst new moms surrounding sex, pleasure and intimacy is that mom’s expect for things to return ‘back’ to the way they were pre-pregnancy.  And it doesn’t work that way.  We don’t move backward in time, we move forward.  Moving forward can mean new adventures, new possibilities, and yes also new challenges now that you are a mom.”

What drives these new demands? The time and energy of motherhood.

“A new mom’s emotional and physical energy is in high demand from a new born and… [t]here is sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts, expectations and social pressure to be the best mother that you can be,” the frequent sex education panelist added. “It can deplete a new mom of the energy, wellness, confidence self love and self care that she needs to feel at a place of balance and erotically or sexually grounded and connected to her own body or to a partner.”

Slow and steady is the way to go to restore intimacy, Young adds.

“In my book I place a major focus on loving ourselves first in order to love and gift love and intimacy to our partner.  Being slow and gentle with ourselves, accepting our bodies, energy levels, and sexual libido as they are that day.  Finding ways to nourish ourself and honoring our own body on a daily basis even if it is for only a few minutes each day.”

La Leche League points out that breastfeeding stimulate bonding withing mom and baby, but partners who once enjoyed the new mom’s breasts alone get left out often.

intimacy

Sometimes it is because mom is uncomfortable.

Young advises:   “It’s important to trust and honor both you and your partners feelings about bodies and touch.  First try connecting with your breasts in a way that feels pleasurable.  These are your breasts.  Not your baby’s breasts, not your your partner’s breasts, they are yours and you are a powerful fabulous multi-faceted human being that is able to nurture a human in one role, and seduce a human in another role.

“Find pleasure within yourself and decide what you feel comfortable sharing with your partner during this time in your new motherhood”

At times it is dad who is not cool with having to share but that is when it is time to get creative.

“[I]if your partner expresses a disinterest in your breasts while you are nursing, take this as an opportunity to explore new erogenous zones,” Young recommends.  “G spot stimulation, deep throating, foot fetish, different elements of kink or role play.  And just because your partner is uncomfortable with breast play during early motherhood doesn’t mean that you can’t pleasure your breasts on your own.  Reclaiming our bodies through masturbation and self-pleasure can be incredibly empowering, stir up and generate new juicy erotic energy and stimulate your desire for sexual play with your partner.”

Maintaining intimacy throughout pregnancy and even new motherhood is essential for a relationship, as there have been several reports of infidelity by a spouse during this sensitive time.

“The important thing is to stay connected, explore new avenues of intimacy and touch, and keep communicating with your partner about your desires and emotions and hold space for your partner to communicate about their desires and emotions,” Young adds.  “There are so many ways to stay erotically connected with your partner during pregnancy from erotic massage, oral sex, vibrators and sex toys, making out  and even dance.  Think of the type of intimate touch or play that you might be craving right now and communicate with your partner about that.  Perhaps being blind folded and fed juicy summer time strawberries and chocolate!  Expand your mind past intercourse and allow the possibilities to unfold.”

She also offers some insight into dealing with the cheating fears.

“I think either partner cheating during pregnancy is likely a symptom of some of this fear and stress as well as insecurities in their new roles and their transition into those roles, while perhaps clinging onto a pre-parenthood pre-pregnancy life.”  says the brand new mom to two after recently given birth. “Having solid communication with your partner prior to pregnancy can be a great asset in moving forward into pregnancy.”

Madison Young values sexual education in her work and has taught workshops and lectures, and she acted as a panelist on the topics of sexuality, feminist porn studies, and the politics of BDSM around the world including at Yale University, Hampshire College, Northwestern University, University of Toronto, University of Minnesota, and the University of California at Berkeley.

Eco-Friday: 10 Books to Read if You’re having a Vegan Pregnancy

A few year ago, actress Emily Deschanel got some heat by continuing with her vegan diet while pregnant last year.

However, despite concerns, remaining vegan while pregnant can be done safely with the consultation of a doctor and nutritionist and maybe also by reading up on some recommended books on having a well-rounded vegan diet.

She is not the only celebrity to stick with her vegan diet even while pregnant. Alicia Silverstone even wrote about her vegan pregnancy diet. Carrie Underwood, Natalie Portman and Allyson Hannigan  are vegans who softened up and switched to vegetarianism during pregancy.
The Happy Herbivore put together a post that includes a list of recommended books for having a safe vegan diet and pregnancy.

Yes, Here’s Another Article Shaming the ‘Bump Watch’ Press

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Le sigh.

Last month, author Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie revealed that she had kept her recent pregnancy private. “I just feel like we live in an age when women are supposed to perform pregnancy,” she told the Financial  Times. “We don’t expect fathers to perform fatherhood.”

And what did that noble move and statement spawn?

Yet another blistering op-Ed about the bump watch press.

Kim Kardashia

In a new piece in Qz, titled “Modern obsession with pregnancy is just another attempt to control women’s bodies“, writer Phoebe Bronstein criticizes the world’s fascination with celebrity pregnancies.

Bronstein pens:

As Renee Cramer writes in Pregnant With the Stars, her book about celebrity pregnancies, “The pregnant female body has gone from being an embarrassing reminder that women had sex and therefore private state of being to being considered public property for regulation and commercial property to be celebrated as sexy.” This obsession translates into a constant baby-bump watch. Now pop culture is dominated by absurd conversations about which celebrities do pregnancy best—Beyonce or Jessica Simpson? Christina Aguilera or Chrissy Teigan? Certainly not Kim Kardashian, whose pregnancy fashion received plenty of negative coverage.

At the root of these evaluations is an impulse to shame women who fail to perform pregnancy in a sufficiently glowing and feminine fashion. At the same time, such conversations frame pregnancy as a kind of style choice: the newest (or oldest) accessory.

Ok. Sure. Is it really that deep, Ms. Bronstein?

Aren’t you essentially shaming the press and blogs for writing on a topic you think shames women? It’s all shaming.

And isn’t the word “shame” (and  “[fill-in-the-blank] shaming”) being overused to the point they are becoming cliche and borderline meaningless?

Ok. I may be biased.
