Where To Go This Summer in North, West, East and South USA

We get press releases and other insights on venues, events, and other destinations and are asked to pass them along to our readers. In this installment of ‘pay it foward’, we’re sharing an eatery, an amusement park, a writer’s workshop and a waterpark in the North, South, East and West coast of the United States

EAST

In New York City, everyone is feeling the heat. On the plus side, the hot weather means its time to enjoy the outdoor patio space at Hibernia Bar in Hell’s Kitchen. The private, shaded outdoor patio space located in the back of Hibernia Bar and Grill is good news for those of us who like to enjoy the outdoors with a cocktail and the company of friends and family during the summer.

This outdoor space is a great option for those who want to check out an outdoor bar and entertainment in New York City. If you’re itching to get out of your house with your family and onto a relaxing patio, check out Hibernia and the large outdoor space just on the backside of the bar.

A popular, authentic Irish pub which also serves as a restaurant where patrons often watch live sports, Hibernia Bar Hell’s Kitchen also offers an outdoor patio section great for enjoying the warm weather and spending time with friends and family. On its patio — or indoors, if the weather isn’t cooperating — enjoy a Guinness alongside Irish favorites and classic American dishes such as wings and calamari.

The outdoor patio space, consistently earns high praise from locals and out-of-towners for its unparalleled casual atmosphere and close proximity to Time’s Square and Rockefeller Center. It’s an ideal place to take your family, shoot hoops, and enjoy cold beverages throughout the day. Order one of Hibernia’s signature perfectly poured Guinness beers and set the tone for a down-to-earth day of fun.

Now that it is outdoor-dining weather in New York City, it is time to take advantage of the covered outdoor space at Hibernia and feel like you are escaping the hustle and bustle of the city. This patio is more of an enclosed courtyard, but that just adds to its unique appeal. When stepping onto the patio, you will immediately notice the vibrant and lush plant life dripping along the brick walls that enclose the space. If you take a look up, you will feel a sense of tranquility as you see the burnt orange cloth draped across the sky shielding you from the blazing sun. Throughout the patio the large wooden tables are the perfect setting for a lunch or dinner party to enjoy the company of close friends and family. No need to hide in your apartment waiting for the summer heat to subside or battle the crowds and take the 2 hour trek to the beaches. Instead, enjoy the summer season outdoor with your family and take advantage of our relaxing wood and brick-adorned patio space.

Where Kid-Friendly To Eat If You Visit NYC this Summer

New York City in its chaotic mess of over-sized apples can be a bit intimidating when trying to decide where to eat… or drink… or schlep the kids to somewhere it will be seemingly worth it.

We have no shortage of bars, but finding the balance of a solid bar with delicious food (where kids won’t find dirty hypodermics that make you answer uncomfortable questions over lunch) can be tricky. One would wager it wouldn’t take such intricate planning but one would be wrong. I’m here to help and one of my top recommendations would have to be THE WINSLOW.

Located conveniently off the L Train (until 2019 when the L stops running and ruins all of our lives) or also just few blocks from all the trains in Union Square. This East Village and Gramercy neighborhood bar boasts over 35 different kinds of gin, as well as everything else you could want. The food menu, created by Executive Chef Nathan Pauley, is an amazing fusion of English flavors with classic, fun and seasonal components. From the Cottage Pie Pasty to the Smash Burger it’s kid friendly without having the hum drum “kids menu”. Kid tested. Mother approved—mostly because she has also been sampling one of our amazing signature cocktails.

The Winslow is a good way to spend a day especially if you’re on brunch time. One of the all time favorite brunch items for the young and old alike would be the Pudgy Pancake (with choice of plain, blueberry or chocolate chip).  Plus, for the adults you can add a banging Bloody Mary or Mimosa—because you know what? It’s your Saturday too.

Everyone in the family will walk away sated and in, quite frankly, a better mood as there was something for everyone.

Win a Baltic Amber Healing Teething Necklace ($60 Value Giveaway)

I’m a firm believer in holistic and Eastern medicine and certainly the power of stones crystals.   Ancient civilizations have utilized the power of crystals to release mental, physical and spiritual blockages which are thought to also facilitate the free flow of throughout the body. On a cellular level, our bodies and quartz crystal are both made up of mineral silicon-dioxide. Because of this, we are naturally receptive to the vibrations of crystals as they transmit, reflect, store light and receive energy. When crystals and stones are placed directly on your body, they have a powerful vibratory effect that surges from the stone or crystal to you. According to the law of physics, thoughts direct energy and energy follows thought. The stones or crystals are thought to be a tool to help the thoughts of our consciousness connect with our body

I recently learned about this thing called Baltic amber, which is hardened resin from now-extinct pine trees that resided in the Baltic region millions of years ago. Amber from the Baltic region contains roughly 8-10% succinic acid, which is known to have analgesic qualities.

There is science to it too: In 1886, the Nobel Prize-winning Robert Koch analyzed succinic acid, which is the active ingredient in Baltic amber. He concluded that the acid had a very positive effect on humans, by strengthening our immune systems and serving as a healing aid. Some of its users have claimed it helps cure regular headaches, menstrual cramps, teething pains, joint or muscle inflammation. Hmmmm.

Today, there are companies that have turned these amber into jewelry that can be worn as jewelry. A few years ago, I discovered Larimar Stone which has similar qualities so it was great to learn about a new method.

The creators of the Baltic Teething Amber Necklace for example markets to families and to parents as a teething bead but the company doesn’t recommend babies actually but the amber necklace for babies beads in their mouths or for it to be worn around the neck or outside the view of parents because of the choking hazard. For that reason, I wonder whether it is safe to be worn on the neck or a baby’s wrist.  Perhaps the ankle. Older kids who will listen to and heed to strict instructions to not put them in their mouths are probably a better market.

Reportedly,  your body heat activates the succinic rich oils to be absorbed releasing the healing properties. That’s quite a claim! I’d be willing to test it out for myself to see if it works before giving it to a baby or a small child.

Do you want to try one out? The makers of Baltic Amber Teething Necklace are giving away three necklaces (valued $19.99 each) to our readers. We will pick three winners! Many ways to Enter. Contest will run for the next 10 Days!  Good luck!

Loved My Essence + Ford My City 4 Ways Food, Arts, Music and Lifestyle Festival DC Stop Experience

I had quite a busy, yet amazing and awesome weekend at the Essence + Ford My City 4 Ways pre-event dinner and food, music, arts and lifestyle festival’s DC stop.

The second annual event gives both brands an opportunity to bridge their respective audiences in a festive journey that infuses culture, celebs, influencers in an open air venue that is the revitalized  Union Square Market.

Before the Saturday day-long festival, I was fortunate to be invited along with a few bloggers, social media taste makers and the like to pre-game the evening before at a Dine and Paint and Sip and Paint event at ArtJamz, a preeminent creative art space in Dupont Circle, launched by DC’s Capitol File Magazine’s editor in chief Michael M. Clements, in the spirit of independence and innovation of the Washington DC artistic influences of Duke Ellington, Dave Chappelle, Marvin Gaye, Go-Go Music, Chuck Brown, Dave Grohl and more.

Before dinner, I sat down to chat briefly with Raj Register, Head of Brand Strategy and Growth Audience Market at Ford, who shared that Ford came up with the concept with Essence to curate from a “grassroots level” an experience event to be developed to the national level. The concept selected DC, Memphis and Atlanta because of these three cities’ high concentration of women and the opportunity to make maximum impact and reach for the target demo.

Register shared that Ford has a new partnership with the WAZE app “so instead of looking on your phone like we know you shouldn’t be, when you plug in your iPhone, it will activate the app”  and also talked a bit about other forthcoming tech partnerships. Some current and future vehicles will have “Wi-Fi” connectivity. “If you want it, we have it,” she added. Another wonderful addition is the rear view camera tech that will be standard in all vehicles moving forward! That’s great news for families. Good stuff!

During the festival the next day,  participants and attendees would get an opportunity to “Ride and Drive“, e.g., take a test drive or ride along in Ford’s recent vehicles in their fleet, and experience the new technology and other amenities for themselves first hand. It’s all a part of a mission to cultivate new brand affinity in emerging markets.

Back to Friday for a bit: after enjoying a yummy salmon dinner with wine, I and my fellow bloggers headed down to ArtJamz’s studio space to create our very own artistic interpretation of the Ford Mustang Pony. In between brush strokes, we noshed on dessert, a nice sampling of cupcakes and chocolate covered strawberries. It was a fun time!! I loved meeting new friends there and connecting and networking with the wonderful dynamic group of women who organized the event. It was a marvelous sisterhood experience!

Here are a few photos from the evening:

I enjoyed this dinner of blackened Atlantic salmon with grilled asparagus and potatoes au gratin so much, I went home and purchased a few stalks of asparagus to recreate the meal later.

Meeting new blogger baes!

We were joined by renowned artist Hamilton Glass who recreated the campaign’s logo on a wall in the art and dine studio.

At the event the next day, I ventured out in the drizzly day to experience the last stop of the My City 4 Ways tour, after a stop in Atlanta and Memphis late last year, the other two cities on the tour.

I got there just in time to catch a panel of entrepreneurs hosted by friend Tiffany Aliche, The Budgenista that included another friend,  Arsha Jones of Capitol City Mambo Sauce and Tees in the Trap successful multi-million dollar business ventures along with Roc Nation apparel’s Emory Jones on the panel as well.

Also, I am a new fan of Melissa Butler, the founder and creator of a line of vegan lipsticks called The Lip Bar. She too was on the panel. Her brand was there offering all attendees a free matte lip stain!

Our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Kelis served up some of her specialties from her new cookbook, “My Life on  A Plate, then later participated in an on-stage Q&A talking her new line of sauces called Bounty and Full,  and balancing motherhood with a recording career and entrepreneurship.

Here are some photos from the My Ford City DC event at Union Market nabbed from social media, my own personal pics and a few official photos below:

Southeast-DC born and bred band Black Alley shared their brand of  unique musical elixir that the group describes is made up of hip-hop, soul, and rock to create  a genre-bending sound called #HoodRock”, adding some authentic DC flare to the event.

DC’s own Grammy-nominated, BET Awards-winning recording artist Raheem DeVaughn swooned the audience with some soulful R&B crooning of his own power hits and a few other well-known covers.

Chef Resha of the very popular Carnal Dish blog provided a sampling of delicacies from her kitchen.

I am in the market for a new SUV myself and our first family car was a Ford Explorer. It was also awesome to get to ride in a 2017 Fusion because I never realized how roomy the 4-door sedan was inside and so much so that it could sub for the larger vehicle we were planning to get. I really dug the dual control temperature system and the fact the new 2018 versions will be Wi-Fi-enabled.

Also, I checked out the latest version of the Explorer. It has been upgraded substantially since with a quad tip exhaust and 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with painted pockets,a powerful 3.5L EcoBoost® engine, sport-tuned suspension and a best-in-class 15 365 V6 horsepower with a six-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission.

And practically speaking, the seating remained pretty spacious with lots of cargo room in the back for family road trips, hauling furniture or groceries. I love the hands-free, foot-activated liftgate feature as well as the 180-degree camera with Split-View and Washer.

For safety purposes, the vehicle also comes with a branded Ford Safe & Smart® Package feature that alerts you of unintentional lane drifting  and allows you to set cruise control and select the speed and distance you want to maintain from the vehicle in front of you.

Lots of good stuff. We definitely will be exploring (pardon the pun) this option on our search.

The Lip Bar did lipstick makeovers.

I listen to WKYS-FM on the radio in the evenings at times so it was also great to see one of the DJs on there I admire, DJ Little Bacon Bear (real name Khalia Canty). I asked the petite curly haired DJ about the origins of her name and she shared it came from a childhood friend for a fictional dynamic duo they formed.

That friend is now a flight attendant. “I’m sure she’s no longer going as our childhood name,” the 5’1′ 100lb young talent  laughed!

Captiol City Mambo Sauce and Tees in the Trap vended and I copped a fab “Thug Wife” Tee!

Overall, it was a wonderful weekend experience that I highly recommend everyone attend if they can the next time the tour makes a stop. There are new cities being added as the festival expands! Keep an eye and ear open for them when announced! I’ll keep you guys updated when I hear again!

Where #STEM Took Us at the #SciFest 2018 Expo

I sojourned down to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington DC this past weekend as a guest of Razor to check out some of the various science, technology, engineering and math-related exhibits, stage shows, demonstrations and information being showcased to get children interested in these fields at the annual US Science and Engineering Expo. The event included exhibitors, performers, speakers, partners, sponsors and advisors for major academic centers, colleges and universities, leading research institutes, government agencies, cutting-edge high tech companies, museums and community organizations.

Oh and lots of science and tech camps! Here is an Official Map of the exhibitors, shows and presentations.

I took my eldest son, who is almost 16 and is interested in gaming and so much so, he is in the process of building his very own computer from scratch!

When we arrived mid afternoon on Saturday, April 7, inside, the 2.3K square foot convention hall which takes up three city blocks was electrifying and bustling with families, school kids, neighborhood and community groups in coordinated tops milling about in excitement.

Our first stop was our host Razor which agreed to generously gift us a Razor scooter and cool socks in advance of writing about our experience at the Expo.  All two days of the Expo, the Razor booth had a steady stream of fans stopping by to check out the latest products and innovation of the disruptive company that transformed the experience of scooters.

Reps  showed us the latest best seller, a pair of electric roller jets that go for themselves! Very cool! My how times have changed from my day of wearing plane metal roller skates on the streets of DC.

I was excited to learn that the scooters made by this top seller of skateboards, hoverboards, trikes and electric bikes have come. One of the more popular and newest products Razor sells these days is the Turbo Jets . They were on display anda brand ambassador wearing the crowd gathered around how to just start skating and then relax as the electric-powered heel wheels amp up to 80-watt, kicking the geared-drive motor that gives the user a boost.  The Jets can travel as fast at 10 mph. They looked relatively easy to use and appeared durable from my review and touch. Watch more  here:

SEE SOME OF THE VIDEOS HERE:

Another rep gave us a peek at how the spark pads, which are part of the Razor Spark Scooter’s braking mechanism, work. They give off real sparks when the user brakes! Very cool! It reminded me of the character Marty McFly’s Hoverboard in the 80s movie Back To The Future II.

Just so you know, she also shared with me that guests of the convention last weekend (and shhhhhh readers of this Blog too) can take advantage of 15% off using this coupon code. That’s a savings of close to $20 off the Turbo Jets which currently retail for $129 on the Razor website, bringing the cost down to a little over $100! That’s a steal. There is FREE shipping on all online orders through the website.

I’m not sure when the coupon code expires so hop on it fast!

Eldest and I then went on to enjoy the rest of the Expo, making stops through Physics Row, the NASA exhibit, some Nature Science displays and caught the last of the stage performances of the day, hip hop scientist Grand Hank.

I missed but would have loved to see Honda’s robot Asimo do a demonstration. Here is a video another attendee captured:

Other stage performanceswe  missed that day or that took place the next day include: Science Cheerleaders, Stunt Science showing behind-the-scenes of Spider-Man and Other Hollywood movies, Explosive Science, Mathemagician Art Benjamin, Explosive Science and more.

There was just too much to do and see in one day and in hindsight, I’m kicking myself for not starting earlier in the day so we could have gone downstairs to explore the expansive displays including College and Career row because it’s time for eldest to start exploring colleges. He is also interested in Robotics and there was an entire section on that area of tech.

On the way, we could have explored the halls that included the World Wildlife Foundation display, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Color of STEM Pavilion featuring Black Girl Code and Howard University. and the Lockheed Martin Orbit and Robo Lab, National Security and Homeland Security displays

Better luck and better planning NEXT YEAR!

Soften, Shrink, Flatten and Fade Scars, Keloids with This Product, It Worked for Me (REVIEW)

ScarAway works to soften, shrink, flatten and fade keloids, c-section scars, burn scars and more

Back in 2014, a rep for this revolutionary product for healing burn wounds, scars and other skin problems called ScarAway asked me to review the product. She explained that the product worked wonders for her then 2 1/2 year old daughter who suffered a 2nd degree burn on the family gas fireplace.

Scar Away is a self-adhesive silicone sheeting designed with patented ‘Silicon’ technology. Each sheet comes with a smooth fabric on one side with silicone on the other side.

The scar treatment works on visible older scars and newly healed wounds as well as keloids and hypertrophic scars.

I don’t recall ever reviewing it then.

Fast forward four years and I get a mysterious pimple on my lower lip. I should have applied hydrocortisone cream or some other astringent on it to heal but noooooo I did the wrong thing and popped it! Gross, I know!

Well then that pimple quickly turned into a growing hideous scab that looked all scaley (is that a word?) and after  a day or two and what a horrible place to have a hideous scar! Ugh! I wanted to hide.

I then remembered the Scar Away product sent to me for review and peeled  off the circular disc and applied it to the scar. I was self-conscious at first but the sheet is clear and from a slight distance away, non one can notice it. On the second day, I applied make up on top of it to conceal it some more.

Underneath, the silicon sheets which uses patented silicone technology that was previously only available in hospitals, burn centers and plastic surgery practices, formed a seal that mimics the skin when a scar is healing.

The seal worked to  soften, shrink, flatten and fade the scar. Though each box comes with 30 discs, I used about 4 and over the course of those few days, the scar almost totally went away. I certainly is less visible than before! What a miracle product.

It is a safe-to-use, practical, over the counter remedy and runs about $18.00 per box which can be considered steep but is a steal considering the healing properties and the wonders it does for you.  They are also safe to use on kids and on burns and other severe or extreme skin irritations.  The sheets won’t stain or stick to clothing, and conceal while they heal.

They come on flexible, breathable backing and can be cut to size to fit comfortably over scars and under clothing.

They sell them at all local drug stores and pharmacies and can be purchased online on Amazon.

I found a review comparing it to Mederma and it put ScarAway on top! I have seen people online using it for their C-Section scar and stretch marks too!

I looked and saw the discs on sale at my local Rite Aid for $18.99 and Target sells them for about that much too! They are an EXCELLENT solution and one of the few out there too so, bookmark this post for future reference, parents!
