Utah Might Win The Award for Having the Most Unique and Oddest Baby Names

So today, I am volunteering at an event at my kids’ school and I learn of a viral incident with a mom in a Utah town who sent out on social media images and audio of the very unique names of the children called out during a graduation ceremony.

Eeek! I looked it up and sure enough, the name shaming is online!

“I’m too tired to sleep so I’m going to tweet out the dumbest Utah names from my son’s Junior High yearbook,” Allison Czarnecki wrote on her twitter account. “Buckle up.”

Among the names the mom found to be “dumb”  —her words, not mine are

Moving house when pregnant: 10 things to make it stress-free

It may feel like the worst timing in the world, but if you find yourself moving house when pregnant, your situation is not all that uncommon! People often move during pregnancy to prepare for all the changes that having a baby will bring. Perhaps you need more space, want to move to a new suburb, or want to be closer to family. Whatever the reason, we have put together a list of the top 10 things to do to prepare for your move and make the process as stress-free as possible.

1. Plan and organize

By mapping out your move ahead of time, you will take a lot of the stress out of moving day itself. You want to minimise stress during pregnancy, so booking removalists, scheduling your packing, and enlisting the help of friends in advance will keep you calm. 

2. Be safe 

It is important to remember that your body is changing and you may not be able to do the things you could before. Heed all advise from your healthcare provider about what you should and shouldn’t do during your move. If you find yourself lifting something, remember to use safe lifting techniques like bending your knees, and not your waist to pick up an object. Keep your back straight and don’t make any sudden or jerky movements. These techniques are even more important in pregnancy because your skeletal system and muscles are moving and are more susceptible to strains and problems. 

3. Pack early and label everything 

Pregnancy brain doesn’t go away just because you are moving! Remember to pack early and label everything so you don’t have the stress of trying to remember where each item is when you get to the new place. By labelling as you pack, your boxes will easily find their way to their new home, and you will be able to focus on other things during the move. If you don’t want to have to get rid of the boxes once you have finished moving, you can often hire boxes instead of buying them.

4. Call in the professionals 

While you might want to tackle everything alone, it is not a good idea to try and move by yourself during pregnancy. You are likely to get tired more quickly and you can’t do all the things you could before. 5. Breathe

If you are close to your due date, you should pack a hospital bag and keep it close by. If you need to make an emergency trip to the hospital, you don’t want to have to be looking among boxes and furniture to find your important items. Have your essentials ready just in case. 

8. Eat well

Even when you are busy it is important to maintain good nutrition before, during and after your move. Your body will become tired more easily while pregnant, and giving it the correct fuel will keep you healthy during the moving process. 

9. Take breaks

On moving day, remember to take regular breaks. It is tempting to race through and get it all done as quickly as possible, but scheduling regular breaks into your plan will mean you won’t have to spend extra time recovering from the rush post move. 

10. Drink water 

Staying hydrated is crucial while pregnant, so keep water on you at all times and drink up!

These 25 Tips Will Make Your Life More Efficient

Loved My Essence + Ford My City 4 Ways Food, Arts, Music and Lifestyle Festival DC Stop Experience

I had quite a busy, yet amazing and awesome weekend at the Essence + Ford My City 4 Ways pre-event dinner and food, music, arts and lifestyle festival’s DC stop.

The second annual event gives both brands an opportunity to bridge their respective audiences in a festive journey that infuses culture, celebs, influencers in an open air venue that is the revitalized  Union Square Market.

Before the Saturday day-long festival, I was fortunate to be invited along with a few bloggers, social media taste makers and the like to pre-game the evening before at a Dine and Paint and Sip and Paint event at ArtJamz, a preeminent creative art space in Dupont Circle, launched by DC’s Capitol File Magazine’s editor in chief Michael M. Clements, in the spirit of independence and innovation of the Washington DC artistic influences of Duke Ellington, Dave Chappelle, Marvin Gaye, Go-Go Music, Chuck Brown, Dave Grohl and more.

Before dinner, I sat down to chat briefly with Raj Register, Head of Brand Strategy and Growth Audience Market at Ford, who shared that Ford came up with the concept with Essence to curate from a “grassroots level” an experience event to be developed to the national level. The concept selected DC, Memphis and Atlanta because of these three cities’ high concentration of women and the opportunity to make maximum impact and reach for the target demo.

Register shared that Ford has a new partnership with the WAZE app “so instead of looking on your phone like we know you shouldn’t be, when you plug in your iPhone, it will activate the app”  and also talked a bit about other forthcoming tech partnerships. Some current and future vehicles will have “Wi-Fi” connectivity. “If you want it, we have it,” she added. Another wonderful addition is the rear view camera tech that will be standard in all vehicles moving forward! That’s great news for families. Good stuff!

During the festival the next day,  participants and attendees would get an opportunity to “Ride and Drive“, e.g., take a test drive or ride along in Ford’s recent vehicles in their fleet, and experience the new technology and other amenities for themselves first hand. It’s all a part of a mission to cultivate new brand affinity in emerging markets.

Back to Friday for a bit: after enjoying a yummy salmon dinner with wine, I and my fellow bloggers headed down to ArtJamz’s studio space to create our very own artistic interpretation of the Ford Mustang Pony. In between brush strokes, we noshed on dessert, a nice sampling of cupcakes and chocolate covered strawberries. It was a fun time!! I loved meeting new friends there and connecting and networking with the wonderful dynamic group of women who organized the event. It was a marvelous sisterhood experience!

I enjoyed this dinner of blackened Atlantic salmon with grilled asparagus and potatoes au gratin so much, I went home and purchased a few stalks of asparagus to recreate the meal later.

We were joined by renowned artist Hamilton Glass who recreated the campaign’s logo on a wall in the art and dine studio.

At the event the next day, I ventured out in the drizzly day to experience the last stop of the My City 4 Ways tour, after a stop in Atlanta and Memphis late last year, the other two cities on the tour.

I got there just in time to catch a panel of entrepreneurs hosted by friend Tiffany Aliche, The Budgenista that included another friend,  Arsha Jones of Capitol City Mambo Sauce and Tees in the Trap successful multi-million dollar business ventures along with Roc Nation apparel’s Emory Jones on the panel as well.

Also, I am a new fan of Melissa Butler, the founder and creator of a line of vegan lipsticks called The Lip Bar. She too was on the panel. Her brand was there offering all attendees a free matte lip stain!

Our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Kelis served up some of her specialties from her new cookbook, “My Life on  A Plate“, then later participated in an on-stage Q&A talking her new line of sauces called Bounty and Full,  and balancing motherhood with a recording career and entrepreneurship.

Southeast-DC born and bred band Black Alley shared their brand of  unique musical elixir that the group describes is made up of hip-hop, soul, and rock to create  a genre-bending sound called #HoodRock”, adding some authentic DC flare to the event.

DC’s own Grammy-nominated, BET Awards-winning recording artist Raheem DeVaughn swooned the audience with some soulful R&B crooning of his own power hits and a few other well-known covers.

Chef Resha of the very popular Carnal Dish blog provided a sampling of delicacies from her kitchen.

I am in the market for a new SUV myself and our first family car was a Ford Explorer. It was also awesome to get to ride in a 2017 Fusion because I never realized how roomy the 4-door sedan was inside and so much so that it could sub for the larger vehicle we were planning to get. I really dug the dual control temperature system and the fact the new 2018 versions will be Wi-Fi-enabled.

Also, I checked out the latest version of the Explorer. It has been upgraded substantially since with a quad tip exhaust and 20-inch machined aluminum wheels with painted pockets,a powerful 3.5L EcoBoost® engine, sport-tuned suspension and a best-in-class 15 365 V6 horsepower with a six-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission.

And practically speaking, the seating remained pretty spacious with lots of cargo room in the back for family road trips, hauling furniture or groceries. I love the hands-free, foot-activated liftgate feature as well as the 180-degree camera with Split-View and Washer.

For safety purposes, the vehicle also comes with a branded Ford Safe & Smart® Package feature that alerts you of unintentional lane drifting  and allows you to set cruise control and select the speed and distance you want to maintain from the vehicle in front of you.

Lots of good stuff. We definitely will be exploring (pardon the pun) this option on our search.

The Lip Bar did lipstick makeovers.

I listen to WKYS-FM on the radio in the evenings at times so it was also great to see one of the DJs on there I admire, DJ Little Bacon Bear (real name Khalia Canty). I asked the petite curly haired DJ about the origins of her name and she shared it came from a childhood friend for a fictional dynamic duo they formed.

That friend is now a flight attendant. “I’m sure she’s no longer going as our childhood name,” the 5’1′ 100lb young talent  laughed!

Captiol City Mambo Sauce and Tees in the Trap vended and I copped a fab “Thug Wife” Tee!

Overall, it was a wonderful weekend experience that I highly recommend everyone attend if they can the next time the tour makes a stop. There are new cities being added as the festival expands! Keep an eye and ear open for them when announced! I’ll keep you guys updated when I hear again!

35 Ways to Feng Shui Your Newborn’s Nursery Before Baby Arrives

I hate clutter. I am also a minimalist. My motto is to keep everything in its place. I’ve followed some Feng Shui techniques in the past, but to

keep it simple, I just try my hardest to keep the children’s toys in their rooms or their basement playroom.

I keep all books, papers and office materials in my home office; all clothes in closets, hampers or laundry room etc.  And if an item finds its way out of place, I put it back where it belongs, promptly. I am a firm believer that clutter creates disorder and chaos and an settled mind.

Ohdeedoh did a great post years about Feng shuing your baby’s nursery that seemed helpful to me. Essentially, they took all the most sensible, practical advice

and enumerated into a simple checklist I loved!

Check out these awesome tips which I know to non-believers in the ancient Chinese principles and techniques may seem a bit looney, but those who have some some basic rudimentary studying of it will get it. Common-sense things you’re probably already doing:

:: Use natural materials whenever possible for bedding, curtains, flooring, rugs, furniture, and toys.

:: Keep drawers and closets organized and pruned of too-small and out-of-season clothing.

:: Have different sources of light in the nursery, some for daytime and others for evening and nighttime.

:: Limit the electrical appliances near the crib. This includes various monitors, air filters, vaporizers, fans, etc.

:: Open windows daily for good ventilation.

Some interesting tips you might also want to try:

:: Choose a soft shade of green, blue, pink, orange or beige for the walls.

:: No reds, yellows, grays, or blacks.

:: Bed sheets should be soothing colors.

:: Bright red is a no-no.

:: Soft blue is recommended.

MATTRESS

:: Place the crib at the furthest point from the door.

:: You don’t want it under a window or in the middle of the room. You also don’t want it against a wall that has plumbing on the other side of it.

:: Orient the crib so that it points north, which represents stillness. Southwest and northeast are acceptable second choices.

:: Keep the space under the crib empty. Resist the urge to use this space for storage.

:: Limit the number of toys and books in the room.

:: Curtains are preferable to blinds, and white curtains are best.

:: Try gentle essential oils, such as chamomile, rose, vanilla and lavender.

TIDY LIVING
:: Make sure there are no hard corners from dressers or changing tables pointed at the baby’s head or body. If there is an immovable point, try to cover it with a silk vine or red ribbon.

:: Reconsider the patterns and images in the room, especially if it is a themed room.

:: According to feng shui guide Tabitha Miller, Avoid garish cartoon characters and action figures. How can boys “stop moving” when they are sleeping on planes, trains and automobiles? That theme would better for a playroom.

:: Nature designs are excellent and promote growth.

:: Animal designs should also be chosen carefully.

:: Ferocious or aggressive animals, even when they are made for a baby’s room, should not be chosen. Some of these are found in jungle motif

designs and include lions, tigers, bears, and reptiles.

:: Make sure that designs do not have harsh points, such as arrows, crosses, diamonds, or triangles.

:: Motifs with fish are fine as long as the watery theme is not overly dominant. Otherwise, respiratory, lung, nasal, or kidney problems could develop.”

If you’re truly desperate for a good night’s sleep, you’ve got nothing to lose by trying these ideas:

:: Start from scratch. Move the baby to a new room.

Give dad the gift of a great book!  If you are not sure, give the  next best thing, a gift card to his favorite bookstore.

Fisherman

A new fishing rod and reel or tackle box with new bait inside might be just the gift for this dad.

Cook

If dad likes to grill out, give dad a new set of grilling tools and apron.  Add some meat rubs to this gift.

Outdoorsman

Whether it’s camping, hunting, boating or any other outdoor activity your bound to find a gift that dad will love.

Sports Fanatic

Study: Too Much Tea Drinking In Pregnancy Leads To Overweight Babies

Drinking three cups of tea a day during pregnancy increases the risk of having overweight children, according to a study of more than 50,000 mothers.

It found pregnant women who consumed more than 200mg a day of caffeine were more likely to have children that are overweight at preschool and school ages.

The study, which was carried out by researchers at Sahlgrenska Academy in Sweden in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, tracked the weight of children up to the age of eight and was one of the world’s largest health surveys of pregnant women.
