Monica Brown is Our 2018 Posh Style Mom Icon!

It’s been a minute since we proclaimed a celebrity mom as a fashion style icon. After stalking Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum singer Monica Brown’s Instagram page and various presses sightings of the fabulous singer, the editors at Bellyitch have determined that the mom to stylish three is deserving to be our 2018 honoree!

For those unfamiliar, this recognition is given to a celebrity mom, usually one who has more than one child, who also has displayed effortless style, not necessarily created by a stylist, who inspires others and Monica is it!

We love the R&B recording artist’s  Instagram posts which are reminiscent of what you’d  see on any “it” Fashion Grammer or Style Blogger’s feed.

Monica’s fashion aesthetic consists of lots of bold colors, thigh high boots and chic dusters. She isn’t afraid to switch up her hair color from crimson, to pitch black to platinum. The mom of three, including 4-year old daughter Laiyah, 9-year old son Romelo and 12-year son Rocko,  has worn down her hair bone straight, in a croute pixie cut or intertwined in waist-length faux locs.

Her page is bright and totally themed out, similar to other influencers out there! See it HERE!

Ms. Brown can do no wrong in our book. The Atlanta-based philanthropist is married to NBA player Shannon Brown since 2010 when the two wed in a secret ceremony. Monica is also step mom to Shannon’s son Shannon Brown, Jr. from a previous relationship. Laiyah is the couple’s only child together as Rocko and Romelo’s dad is Monica’s ex, actor and rapper Rodney Hill, Jr also known as Rocko

The last time we named someone this honor was 2017 and it was given to philanthropist and end ex model Helen Lasichanh, Pharrell’s wife. Before her, the honor was given to Kourtney Kardashian in 2015. Before her, in 2014, Jennifer Hudson, who was the fourth mom to a single child to get the award. Before her, P!nk got it in 2012. And former First Lady Michelle Obama was dubbed an icon in 2011. Other designees include, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Kelly RipaVictoria BeckhamTichina Arnold and  Christina Milian.

Here is a quick rundown of some of ourm fave looks Monica has rocked over the years as shared in her super fly Insta!

Beyonce HBCU Tribute Headliner and Celeb Moms at Coachella 2018

Nicole Richie, Beyonce Headliner, Christina Milian, Behati Prinsloo and Alessandra Ambrosio at the 2018 Coachella mMusic festival.

Many of our celeb moms headed to Empire Polo Field in Indio, California this weekend for the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Nicole Richie  showed up in white to her  Revolve x Nicole Richie House of Harlow x Urban Decay lunch. Behati Prinsloo was there looking fly in Alexander Wang zip-front pants, Vans and a bucket hat. Alessandra Ambrosio showed up looking fab and outfitted to the free spirit theme that is common among attendees.

Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner along with Kylie Jenner and her bestie Jordyn Woods headed down.

Whitney Port and Rachel Zoe were photographed in an iconic all white pic. Loved Christina Milian‘s Boho dress too!

Beyonce headlined by opening up her set in a regal gold and black caped outfit that resembled the regal African queen Nefertiti but then she quickly stripped from her opener fit to a custom Balmain athleisure look complete with a gold cropped hoodie with her initials embezzled in jewels on the front, denim cutoffs and shimmering high high toots.

Before it was over, mom to Rumi, Sir and Blue Ivy Carter had a few costume changes including a PCV leather leotard, and she brought her husband Jay Z out to do their duet of their 2006 song together “Deja Vu” and her sister Solange to perform “Get Me Body.”

There was also a Destiny’s Child reunion as our other alum Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams joined Queen By for a few of their hits, “Lose My Breath”, “Say My Name” and “Soldier”.

Her set was an ode to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) because it featured a large marching band, drum and majorette line, reminiscent to the types you’d see performing during a homecoming game at Howard, Flordia State or Grambling State.  (edit: There were actual FSU bandmembers playing). There was even an interlude when she acted as the prophyte initiating a new line into her fictional fraternity “B A K” — which could stand for Beyonce and Knowles or, Beyonce Phi Knowles or Beyonce Delta Knowles (couldn’t tell if that was an A, Delta or Phi symbol)  who knows. The mock probate was entertaining!

A few of the dance moves during the set include “stepping” which is a traditional hand, clap and stomp movement common in Black Greek step shows with roots in African dance, ritual and customs.

Beyonce was supposed to headline at the festival last year, but she postponed her appearance after she announced she was pregnant with twins.

Here is Beyonce’s complete set per JustJared.com‘s snoops. See the entire performance HERE!

E! Dissects Celebrity Parenting Trends in Recent History

Having children is one of life’s great equalizers. Famous parents may be able to spend more on decorating the nursery, but at the end of the day Beyoncé just wants what’s best for her babies, and the Kardashians hope their kids are happy and healthy. And don’t all moms and dads want the same thing for their little ones?

The difference here is that when someone like Chrissy Teigen claps back at a mommy-shamer, it makes national news. And when Khloe Kardashian says she plans to eat her placenta, just like Kim Kardashian did, other moms-to-be may be intrigued enough to look into the encapsulation process for themselves.

Of course in all cases it’s important for people to do their own research and consult with their personal doctors about what’s best for them and their children. But we couldn’t help but be curious about a lot of these things we hear celebrities talking about these days, so we checked with medical and parenting experts to get the low-down on the usefulness of some of these parenting trends.

Placenta Pills Taking

Meanwhile, this information is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice. But let’s get right down to it and start with eating placenta…

Kim did itKourtney Kardashian did it and Khloe says she’s going to do it, but human placentophagy definitely didn’t start with the Kards. Nikki ReedKatherine HeiglJanuary JonesAlicia SilverstoneHolly Madison and Padma Lakshmi all had their placentas encapsulated and turned into pills to take after giving birth, too, while Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Gaby Hoffman say they ingested theirs in smoothie form—and they all had positive things to say about their experiences.

All the way back in 2013, before delivering daughter Rainbow, Madison wrote on her blog, “I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!”

“All I’ve been doing is breastfeeding and eating chocolate chip cookies—and eating placenta, which helps,” Hoffman told E! News in 2015 about how she was taking care of herself after welcoming her daughter Rosemary.

Mayim Bialik, who in addition to playing a neuroscientist on TV is also one in real life, as well as a placenta-consuming mother herself, explained the thought process behind this practice in a 2012 blog post for Kveller, writing, “Human beings are the only mammals that have chosen to not routinely ingest their placenta, which is consumed by every other mammal for its protein and iron-rich properties that are critical in helping the mother’s body recuperate after giving birth.”

According to Dr. Daniel Benyshek, a professor of medical anthropology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, there’s not enough research yet to back these positive claims. “There’s a great deal of anecdotal evidence,” he tells E! News. “[But] on the scientific side, there’s very little evidence at all to suggest that there are the sorts of objective measurable benefits when compared to a placebo that some of the proponents claimed.”

There has been at least one documented case of a baby who contracted a serious bacterial infection while the mother was taking placenta pills, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a warning last year about the practice.

The child was treated and discharged, but the incident did raise a red flag for some in the medical community. This past August, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published a review with its take on the trend.

“If there were no harm in consuming placental tissue, we would argue that it doesn’t matter [if a mom eats placenta pills],” Dr. Alex Farr, a gynecologist and one of the authors of the review, explained to E! News. “But the problem is that with placenta consumption, there is a possible harm—mainly the harm of transmitting infectious diseases from the mother to the baby. This is why we are straightforward arguing and voting against placental consumption.”

Experts say that if moms do plan to eat their placenta, they should discuss it with their doctor and choose an encapsulation company that practices proper food safety protocols for handling, storing and preparing the material.

Or, another option is to plant the placenta beneath a tree like Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves. In 2008, the actor talked about burying son Levi‘s placenta in an orchard beneath a giant tree, telling Sanjay Gupta on CNN’s House Call, “It’s going to bear some wonderful fruit!”

Placenta trees haven’t caught on the way placenta pills have, but according to Dr. Stacy Zamudio, a senior scientist and Hackensack Universal Medical Center’s Director of Research, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, burial of the placenta is actually “the most common practice” and “goes back to medieval times.”

“The idea [is] that you bury the placenta on your property near your house, and you plant a tree in that place that will carry the attributes that you want your child to have,” she tells E! News exclusively. “Those cultural beliefs across western Europe were very very widespread right up until the enlightenment era.”

But still, even if you’re just planting a placenta, make sure to act in compliance with any federal and local regulations for the disposal of human material.

Cord Blood Banking

Audrina PatridgeNick CarterMario Lopez, and Bill and Giuliana Rancic have all spoken out in favor of (or in official partnership with) private cord-blood banks. Cord blood is pretty much what it sounds like—blood taken from the baby’s umbilical cord—and it contains potentially life-saving stem cells that can be banked for future use.

“CBR [Cord Bank Registry] came highly recommended to us, both by Giuliana’s sister and our OB/GYN, but we also did our own homework and visited the lab right before Edward Duke was born. We even saw where his cord blood stem cells would be stored!” the Rancics explained their decision on People.com in 2012.

When stored in a private cord-blood bank, the family pays an initial fee (typically somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000) plus an annual storage fee (ranging from $100 to $175) so that they can access their child’s stem cells at any time. With the public system, a baby’s cord blood is donated (at no charge to the parents) and becomes available to anyone who is a match and needs it.

Last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics released an updated policy statementhighlighting the option of cord blood banking. Dr. William T. Shearer, the lead author of the policy and a Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology and Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine, tells E! News “it’s a matter of personal choice” what parents do with a child’s cord blood.

Cord blood stored in private banks has “a very restricted use,” says Dr. Shearer. “The chances that the cord blood is going to be used to save someone’s life is far greater with the public system.” “Now there is a chance,” he notes, “that new developments could happen in science and medicine in which the technique is discovered provided we could do more than the cord blood than is being done currently.”

Breastfeeding

Danica McKellar breastfed her son until he was 2 1/2, Mayim Bialik weaned her son at age 4, and Alanis Morissette said she would breastfeed “until my son is finished.” Like these moms, Kourtney Kardashian was criticized for breastfeeding son Mason Disick for too long, but on the flip side, Adele got flak for not breastfeeding son Angelo for long enough.

In this case, there’s no right or wrong amount of time—and to breastfeed at all or not is an entirely personal decision. “It’s what works for each mother,” Dr. Robin Berman, a psychiatrist and author of Permission to Parent: How to Raise Your Child With Love and Limits, tells E! News. “If women choose to breastfeed, that’s wonderful. If they make the choice not to breastfeed and to use formula, that’s wonderful, too.”

Attachment Parenting

Pink, Alicia Silverstone and Bialik have all spoken out in favor of attachment parenting, a child-rearing philosophy that promotes closeness through near constant touch.

Angelina JolieMilla JovovichTori Spelling and Tia Mowry have practiced some form of co-sleeping, which is a key tenet of attachment parenting, and countless celebs including Chris HemsworthandElsa PatakyJessica AlbaGwen StefaniChanning TatumJennifer GarnerRyan Reynolds and Gisele Bündchen have been spotted babywearing (the official term for strapping the baby to your chest—remember when Reynolds was criticized for not properly securing his daughter in the carrier?), which can also be considered a form of an attachment parenting.

The verdict? “If it works for you, great. It doesn’t work for everybody,” Dr. Sonya Rasmisnky, a psychiatrist specializing women’s mental health and reproductive psychiatry, tells E! News about the overall concept of attachment parenting.

“When I think about attachment parenting, I think of an insistence on particular care practices: Baby-wearing, co-sleeping, that kind of thing,” she says. “But attachment is a much larger thing…Attachment is having a responsive parent who’s attuned to you and to your needs, and that that can take multiple forms… I don’t think it’s necessary to babywear and to co-sleep in order to be attached to your child.”

Mom-Shaming Resistance

More and more, many famous moms—and dads—aren’t afraid to clap back: Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Jada Pinkett Smith, Julia StilesKristin CavallariHilary Duff and Snookiamong others—have all shut down mom-shamers, and David BeckhamJohn Legend and, as mentioned, Ryan Reynolds have all had opportunities to defend themselves from the dad police.

Celebrity parents definitely aren’t the only ones dealing with this, either.

Dr. Berman says the shaming culture “has really gotten out of control,” explaining, “It’s like a bubble—somebody’s gotta pop it and deflate it and realize that they’re parenting from their ego and not from their soul. Because when you’re shaming other people and you’re judging other people, you can’t be loving them at the same time.”

Parent shaming is obviously prevalent online, but there are friendly, supportive corners of the web, too. As Dr. Rasminsky puts it, “[T]here are lot of downsides to the internet, but one of the upsides is that you can find pretty much any kind of community there.”

“I guess I would say if you’re feeling shamed, go find some other moms to hang out with who are going to be more supportive, because they exist,” she adds. “I think finding your people is one of the tasks of early parenting because it’s a whole new world—so that’s making friends who are moms who share your view of parenting and of what’s important, that’s possible to do and i think it’s important to do and it’s sustaining, and they’re out there.”

Ultimately, we all need to remember “there is no exact science to parenting,” says Dr. Berman. “I am a mother of three, I am a psychiatrist, I am a parenting book author—there is no one way to parent. There is not a perfect formula, and if we all look at each other with a lot more love and support and less shame, we would all raise happier kids.”

Inside Toya Wright’s Baby Shower

Toya Wright celebrated the impending arrival of her second child at a baby shower in an Atlanta private residence this past MLK weekend.

It was a reality TV show reunion as some Our blog faves and bumpwatch alums Monica Brown, Monyetta Shaw and Rasheeda attended. Other stars of Atlanta-based shows Shamea Morton from Bravo TV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta Quad Webb-Lunceford from that same network’s Married to Medicine.

The event featured personalized candy apples, candy bar and Rice Krispie treats and more. The theme was “Showering Reign”, a take off of the name she has selected for her daughter, though in one recent post, she referred to her baby as “Reignbeaux“, phonetic spin on Rainbow with a very unique spelling.

Wright also used the occasion to introduce the public to her beau and the baby’s dad Atlanta sports manager Robert “Red” Rushing. Up until this point, she had elected to conceal his identity. Secret’s out now!

If the baby’s name will be Reignbeaux, this will be the second celebrity baby Rainbow in recent years because The Girls Next Door alum Holly Madison‘s first child is  also named Rainbow. Reign is also a bit popular recently among celebrities. Kourtney Kardashian‘s son is named Reign and that is the middle name of Lil Kim’s daughter Royal Reign.

Wright announced her pregnancy last September  with a very creative scripted video featuring her daughter Reginae Carter with ex husband rapper Lil Wayne.

Oh and h/t from YBF, we learned that she also had a second shower with her fans. Nice! Here are photos shared by attendees:

Throwback Thursday: Our Fave Most Stylish Preggers Celebrities

The year is winding down to a close and we are going to acknowledge some of the most stylish celebrities who managed to pull off the stressful time that is pregnancy with style and flare.

But in the meantime, let’s take a stroll down memory lane to some of my faves of yesteryear:

South Korean Actress Kim Hee-sun

Our Bae Bey!

Blake Lively

Kerry Washington

Kourtney Kardashian

Rasheeda

Drew Barrymore

Tika Sumpter

And last but not least Chrissy Teigen

Caitlyn Jenner Confirms Kylie’s Pregnancy

Kylie Jenner‘s dad Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) has been the first person in the Kardashian/Jenner clan to confirm openly to the media that Kylie is indeed pregnant with her and 25-year old boyfriend, hip hop star Travis Scott‘s  baby.

Caityln’s rep told The Sun when asked how she found out about her daughter’s pregnancy: “All I can tell you is that it was some time ago.”

ok. ?

Kylie hasn’t confirmed that news in the media yet, as her mom Kris Jenner  told longtime family friend and executive producer of the Keeping Up with The Kardashian reality-Tv franchise Ryan Secrest when he pressed her  for confirmation.

Well there you have it! It’s always the dads! LOL!

Beyonce’s father Matthew Knowles confirmed that she was having twins before Bey and hubby Jay confirmed it themselves.

My thoughts on Kylie being pregnant is this: the girl is 20, yes a young age, but she has already achieved multi-millionaire status through her reality Tv show, clothing line with her  sister, Vogue model Kendall Jenner, and her wildly popular make up line, Kylie Cosmetics.

While ideally, and statistically, a baby born within wedlock of a healthy marriage has a better chance at a balanced life, it’s not common in Hollywood or even among general regular families these days.

So while Kylie may be young to start a family, she has more than enough means and support to provide for any child.

She’s a multi-millionaire with several homes  and her baby will have plenty of ready-made playmates in the form of cousins.

Kylie’s big sister Kim Kardashian- West and husband Kanye West are currently awaiting the arrival of their third child. The baby – a girl – is being carried by surrogate and is due in January.

The new Scott-Jenner baby will have the Kardashian-West kids, 4-year old North and 2-year old Saint and the Disicks, 7-year old Mason, 5-year old Penelope and 2-year old Reign, whose mom is Kourtney Kardashian and dad Scott Disick, 1o-months old old Dream Kardashian, Rob and Blac Chyna‘s daughter as cousins.

Pharrell’s Wife Helen Lasichanh is Our 10th Posh Mom Style Icon

We first declared Pharrell Williams and wife Helen Lasichanh the stylish celebrity couple back in March 2014 because of their fab eclectic and fashionable uniqueness. They show up on Red Carpet with all sorts of fabulousity in unexpected mix of patterns, lengths, materials and fabrics. Somehow, it all seemed to work and create delightful and intriguing wonderfulness.

Now that Lasichanh has welcomed her triplets earlier this year, she is now a mom of four, including her and Williams’ 8-year old son Rocket. So…this means she officially qualifies for one of our elusive Fashion Posh Mom Icon Awards.

We were one of the very first, if not the first, online outlet to create an award recognizing stylish moms. Since launching it in 2009, other more established media and global fashion entities have launched and given out their own Style Icon awards, albeit with a lot more fanfare and celebrities…oh and an actual award event. ha!

Our honor is not given out often neither liberally. We usually like to bestow it upon a mom who has more than one child because to be stylish while balancing being mom to a small brood takes skill! And we like to give it to a mother who has a personal style that is effortless and looks like she, and not her stylist team, put her looks together.

That means, the paparazzi would not catch her out there looking busted.

Also, Lasichanh, who has Laotian and Ethiopian heritage, used to be a model and currently designs clothes so we’re going to go on a limb and presume that she outfits herself also, most stylist wouldn’t be so bold to combine some of the pieces that Lasichanh puts together because they are bold to the extreme. They usually stick with safe.

Helen Lasichanh in her model days. – Tumblr

The last time we named someone this honor was 2015 and it was given to Kourtney Kardashian.
We also have never given it to a woman who is more famous for being a spouse of a very well-known celebrity than a celebrity in her own right but Lasichanh’s fashion IQ is so up there that she deserves it! I mean Beyonce, Gwen Stefani and Kim Kardashian haven’t won one yet! (smile)

Lasichanh married her husband in 2013 in Miami, Florida in an intimate star-studded event attended by Jay Z, Gwen Stefani and Justin Timberlake and featured Usher and Buster Rhymes as musical performers.

Helen Lasichanh is our 2017 Posh Mom Style Icon! Congrats girl!!

12 Times Celebrity Moms Posed ‘Glam Squad While Momming’ Photos in Social Media

img_6918

Alas, it looks like it now officially a must-do trendy thing for working moms in Hollywood to do: Pose for the official “momming while being serviced by a glam squad” photo.

And…look, Avatar 2 star Zoe Saldana is the latest to join the club!

The Guardians of the Galaxy actress posted a photo on her Instagram account of her tending to her infant son, Zen, while getting primped and polished for some red carpet event, perhaps.  “You do what you have to do to be there….  #workingmom” she captioned the photo in both English and her native Spanish.

Before Saldana did it, the likes of Audra McDonald, Molly Sims, Miranda Kerr, P!nk, Terri Seymour, Ali Landry, Alyssa Milano, and Jessie James Decker have all share social media photos of themselves in the throws of dolling up as a working mom in Hollywood.

728x90-1
Gisele Bundchen may have been the unofficial mother  of this genre of photos. When she did it in 2013, the Victoria Secret model she caught a lot of flak for those who said she was being vain and using motherhood to call attention to herself — not just her then-one-year old daughter Vivian Lake.

giseleb

The Brazilian Supermodel’s famous breastfeeding while getting glam shot was controversial because vanity and “glamity” aren’t supposed to co-exist with motherhood and breastfeeding, socially. Aaaah humbug!

Shameless actress Emily Rossum joined in the fun of criticizing Bundchen by posting a parody of Bundchen’s photos by copying it to a tee using a doll. Okay, Emily. Sure.

img_6916

But we are able to recognized the value to the image despite what the critics say. In the past, in tinsel town  (and Bollywood) getting pregnant and having a family can disrupt a woman’s career but not so much anymore.

As we’ve shared before, motherhood isn’t halting opportunities and production can and do work around a star’s pregnancy. In recent years, many celebrity parents are showing their social media fans that they don’t let motherhood interfere with their work either. They can do both.

Again, since Bundchen’s photo, other celebrity women like LilyAldridge, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kandi Burruss have shared photos of themselves tending to their babies while getting glammed up for an event.

Celeb Couples That CoHabitate and Remain a Family Unit After Breaking Up

stay-as-a-family

Co-parenting with an ex can be hard but some, make it work. And then there are some who manage to retain their strong familial bond despite the break up that they confuse people.

I can think of three celebrity couples who take co-parenting to another level by co-habitating, remaining close-knit and vacationing together while broken up for the sake of the children.

More recently, I think of Bravo docu-series Real Housewives of Potomac housewife Robyn Dixon and her ex Juan Dixon, basketball coach and former NBA player. A big part of their storyline on the two-season show is the fact that they live in the same home for convenience and financial reasons, according to Robyn. The couple have two 7 and 9 year old-sons, Corey and Carter.

“We sleep in the same bed,” Robyn confessed to OK! Magazine. “If you didn’t know, if I didn’t tell you, you would assume we are married just because we function as a couple kind of as we have always known each other.”

She has said they are working it out and may reunite romantically.

Similarly, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick have been photographed vacationing together in Hawaii this year, very much looking like a nuclear family with their 7-year old son Mason, 4-year old daughter Penelope and 2-year old son Reign in tow. The on-again-off again couple are part of a very public TV family so perhaps that makes it easier to keep close.

Not long ago, we hear that Ben Affleck reportedly slept in the room next door to Jennifer Garner after they split because it was just easier to keep the family unit together during those precarious times after the break up. Affleck and Garner co-parent 11-year old Violet, 8-year old Seraphina and 5-year old Samuel.

They are friends and have had amicable break ups and are adult enough to move past what ever caused the split and move forward together while they figure things out.

Naturally, these types of arrangements confuse people who are used to seeing couples go at each other’s throats after breaking up.

Blogger Destiny Green shared her story in Romper in a post titled “Here’s What That Beautiful Instagram Post Of My Family Doesn’t Tell You“.

In it, she relays that the perfect family people see on her social media feed is actually not even what it seems.

“I think it’s still strange for other people to see us acting as a traditional family, and with no conventional explanation behind our decision to part ways, it often feels hard to justify to people who ask about my relationship with Honor’s dad,” she wrote about her situation with her daughter’s dad Ibrahim with whom she is no longer in a relationship with.

It’s unconventional and sometimes criticized by onlookers but if it works for the couple for the sake of the children, who are we, as society to judge, right?

Green sums it up best:

My hope for every other mama who comes across my blog or Instagram page is for them to know that it’s OK for their journey to not look like mine and Honor’s — that whatever story is unfolding in their journey through motherhood is just as valid and important as anyone else’s. This is your life and what you are doing is right for you. At the end of the day, whether you are married and parenting with a spouse, single-parenting, or co-parenting and going to the museum for family days like my family does, only you can set your standards. Whatever your story is, I hope you’re able to embrace it, and I hope you know that you’re doing a great job.

Amen!

I’ll add some more including some of the sisters we’ve showcased in the past.
