Decade in Review: 10 Celeb Parenting Trends That Are Now Outdated

Having covered celebrity pregnancy, parenting and the “bump watch” for over a decade, I pride myself in being an institutional memory of the trends in this space.

As we close out on another decade, I’ve identified 10 trends that have come and gone from the past decade, including old ones that have faded out of style over time and new ones spearheaded by the recent popularity and usage of social media.

Let’s start with the trends that are

Outdated and going bye bye:

10. Million Dollar Deals for First Baby Photos

In 2007, Julia Roberts reportedly was the first celebrity to demand a six figure payday ($250,000) from PEOPLE magazine to get the rights to publish the first photos of her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel. OK magazine got a steal and paid merely a little over a half a million for pics of Gwen Stefanie’s 2 week old son, Kingston. OK Magazine lost their $2 million dollar bid for Britney Spear and Kevin Federline’s first baby pic to People magazine. Nicole Richie reportedly received $1M for her photo of son, Max and Christina Aguilera for her son.

With magazines, along with newspapers, losing tons of revenue as people start to rely on digital forms of media for news and information, it no longer made business sense to pay these astronomical amounts of money.

Also, with the advent of social media and more conscious celeb couples publishing their babies on Instagram for free, the less famous personalities who used to shop for first photo deals found there was no longer a market for them.

9. Pregnant Nude Covers

After Demi Moore posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991, it became a thing for stars to do the same.  Since then, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Nia Long and many more graced covers in the buff while expecting.

Soon, it became more of a quick and easy way to get publicity and attention, and eventually the public interest in them waned.

The last big photo issue was of Alanis Morissette in 2016. She did an undercover water shoot but the naked baby bump photo thing is more or less passe and not a public rosy stunt many will do.

8. The Celebrity Bounce Back

Around the same time that gossip magazines started to cover celebrity parents, we saw a lot of photos about the “bounce back”. It was as if it was a competition to see who could pop up slim and trim months or even weeks after baby.

It was ridiculous for several reasons: 1) a lot of the covers were photoshopped; 2) some of the celebs either genetically were predisposed to lose weight fast or underwent surgical procedures to quickly trim down after baby; 3) it set up a dangerous standard given that a lot of celebs have private chefs and trainers to help them lose weight fast; and 4) it sent a damaging message to women who should be concerned with safely healing from delivery and focusing on nursing and connecting with their newborns.

In any event, those magazine covers are not as common as before. In fact, a bunch of celebrity women like Chrissy Teigen, Blake Livey, Mila Kunis and others have spoken out about the ridiculous expectations on them to return to their pre-pregnancy form after baby.

The industry has gotten the message and do not sensationalize the bounce back as much as before.

7. Sponsored Baby Showers

Once upon a time, celebrities were approached by companies and brand representatives to host a baby shower for them in exchange for promotion of their products. The companies knew there were tons of promotions that came with the exposure.

Amazon.com sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower in 2018. Although the trend is dying out, over the past decade, Danielle Jonas and her husband Kevin celebrated a baby shower thrown by Fit Pregnancy magazine.

Also, Burt’s Bees was among the sponsors of Kourtney Kardashian’baby shower when she was pregnant with daughter Penelope. Similarly, Le Bebe CoCo  was among Kristin Cavallari‘s baby shower sponsors. Target hosted Beverley Mitchell’s baby shower. Several liquor companies provided the libations for cocktails served up at Love and Hip Hop’s  Yandy Smith‘s baby shower.

Jaime King enjoyed some fab brand goodies at her shower.  Ecoya‘s Sweet Pea & Jasmine home fragrance collection, a pink Quinny Buzz Special Edition stroller, a mamaRoo baby swing, a pink Hoppop Bath tub, a pink Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket, a Timi and Leslie diaper bag and a 5 ft. custom-made giraffe by Melissa and Doug all contributed to Victoria Beckham‘s baby shower.

Finally, Belly Bandit sponsored Jewel’s baby shower.

While this trend continues, audiences do not respond as favorable to them any longer and the comment section on sponsored baby showers are sometimes filled with negative commentary from fans who want less rich new parents to be showered with the gifts.

SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN

6. Hiding Children’s Face in Social Media

We famously were contacted by Stella McCartney’s reps over 10 years ago to remove paparazzi photos of her traveling with her children in the street posted on the blog. A few years later, Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard launched a campaign in 2014 to get a California state law passed to protect children of celebs from paparazzi. Others have done the same.

Eva Mendes and Kerry Washington do not show their kids in public or social media at all.

In the social media era, a few refuse to feature their children in social media or they hide their faces when they do: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, brit star Rochelle Humes, Kylie Jenner  and Jenna Dewan all have done that in the past or continue to.

5. Celebrity Kids Instagram Accounts

On the flip side, several less famous stars realize the tremendous money making and marketing opportunities in giving their children their own account and branding their name and fame from birth.

It’s a pretty recent phenomenon, but starting with , DJ Khaled who launched an Instagram account  for his son Asadh in 2016 when Baby Khaled was just one month old, many celebs have created accounts for their kids as well.

Little  Asadh now has 1.8M followers, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade‘s 1 year old daughter Kaavia James boasts 1M followers and Michael Phelps’ 3-year old son Boomer Phelps  now has 665K followers of his Instagram page.

I think the youngest baby to get an Insta was Cali Clay Shephard, daughter of model Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard whose account was opened at just 16 days old.

This is a trend that is not getting old but is growing as more realize the revenue generating options that open up with having a massive engaged following.

4.  Hiding Pregnancy to Late Trimester

From my memory in covering this topic, I think that Kylie Jenner, Anna Kournokova and a few others did the best job at hiding their pregnancies for all 9 months. It’s pretty hard to hide from the paparazzi and shield their bump during events, filming and promoting a project.

But in 2011, Evangeline Lilly managed to almost completely disguise her entire pregnancy until papps found her in Hawaii while almost done gestating her first child. Jennifer Lopez and Adele managed to hide their respective pregnancies for over 5 months.

Given how common miscarriage is, a lot of women, whether a celebrity or not, wait until the latest time possible when they feel comfortable that they will be able to carry their baby to term to announce baby news.

Hiding an early pregnancy while building a career in front of the public is not easy to do as Cardi B learned but it can be done and the more private or celebs are learning from others how to do it.

3. Launch New Career/Re invigorate Career

Also during the height of the interest in celeb baby bumps, a lot of stars who were formerly very popular but whose fame had waned were able to reinvigorate their respective careers after having a baby.

For example, Kim Karadashian West once lamented that she saw a spike in paparazzi photos whenever she is expecting.

About 10 years ago, Mommyish published a gallery of celebrities who became more famous after becoming pregnant or becoming a mom.

It is not clear is the general public is as enamored with celebrity pregnancy as it once was before so a baby may not be the career boost as it was in the past.

2. Launch a Maternity or Parenting Related Brand

Tia and Tamera Mowry famously launched a breastfeeding brand called Milky after becoming parents for the first time.  Others like Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum launched maternity lines or added children clothing to their existing lines as with Stella McCartney and The Kardashians after they became a mom, respectively.

Instagram famous women shift their feeds and started featuring their babies and promoting parenting and motherhood related brands as part of their new post baby rebranding.

So at least in social media, a new baby can create opportunities.

1. Being Open and Honest about Miscarriage

Micarriage is a taboo among many families. It is unspoken and women who go through it suffer in silence or keep it a secret. It occurs more often than many would believe, yet women usually keep it a secret from family and friends. It certainly taints and colors one’s journey to motherhood, whether it happened in the early weeks or mid term. A woman will earnestly never be the same after suffering through one, especially she and her partner were planning for the baby they lost.

In recent years, a lot of celebrities have been open and transparent about having gone through a miscarriage.

And a lot more are being open and transparent about losses they’ve had in the past.

From many of the stars of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mithcell to Michelle Obama to Beyonce and Carrie Underwood and Gabrielle Union, openly sharing about a miscarriage or pregnancy loss is the thing to do.

Because of their influence, platform and reach, it’s awesome that these women are sharing their stories to help comfort and empathy for those who have endured it or may be unknowing about how common it is.

In the coming decade, let’s hope the trend of being relatable and real continue and we can leave behind those trends that created stress and anxiety among their followers behind.

Celeb Mamas Slayed 2019’s Met Gala Pink Carpet

This year’s annual gala to celebrate the opening of a new exhibit at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of the Arts, was more over the top than ever before.

Perhaps because the theme was “Camp”, maybe, celebrities brought extra extravagance and bold and gregarious fashion and antics.

The official theme of the Met’s 2019 was “Camp: Notes on Fashion” and celebrates the newest exhibit which is inspired by Susan Sontag‘s 1964 essay that defines camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”

I think Lady Gaga might have won with her theatrics that included he unraveling and revealing of not one but four looks by designer, with the assistance of a small army of flamboyant but meticulous handlers.

Cardi B’s presentation and actor Billy Porter’s were quite spectacular and so much so, I almost forgot previous mega head turners Rihanna, Beyoncé, Madonna and third-time mom-to-be Blake Lively were conspicuously missing.

My fave looks were by women who are not yet moms (per this is a celebrity pregnancy blog so they focus is on moms)

First was singer and Endgame actress Hailee Steinfield

My second fave was Lupita Nyong’o who is stunning!

And of course, we saw lots of the celebrity moms we have featured on Bellyitch who each brought their total A game to the party and did it up right!

I am proud of myself for having the institution memory to have been able to recognize all of these beautiful moms without reading the caption to see who they are. Woot.

Marvel Stars Reflect On Founder and Creator Stan Lee’s Passing

Every parent to a fan of superhero comics, television series and movies should know a child’s favorite character and probably have a few of their own from childhood and today, the comic universe lost a pioneer and father figure in Marvel creator Stan Lee who died today at the age of 95.

Today, several of the celebrity women whose pregnancies we’ve covered in this blog left words of salute to the great Stan Lee who is recently famous for making obscure cameos in Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and films.

I caught the latest when he played a fellow gambler in The Black Panther release. Here is a quick rundown, excerpted from E! News roundup, of what our Bellytich Bumpwatch alums had to say about Lee’s passing and what he meant to them as actors.

Halle Berry– “RIP, Stan Lee. Thank you for sharing your incredible vision with us. We are eternally grateful to you and would not be the same without it,” tweeted Berry, who played Storm in three X-Men movies. “I am so honored to have played a part in your world and will forever look back on the opportunity

Scarlett Johansson

“The galaxy just gained another Dog Star,” the actress, who plays Black Widow in multiple films, told E! News in a statement. “Thankful everyday to be a small part of Stan’s universe. He was a legendary visionary and a true artist.”

Zoe Saldana

“Today we lost one of the greats. Stan Lee, you were an inspiration and superhero to us all,” the actress, who played Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy films, wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for contributing so much- and giving us all something to aspire to!”

Evangeline Lily

Stan…more than a master of stories, you always seemed like a master of living,” the star of Ant-Man and the Wasp wrote on Instagram. “I will look to you for inspiration for the rest of my life. You live on. xoxo Your Wasp.”

Jessica Alba

Taking a moment to thank the great Stan Lee for his kindness,” the actress wrote on Instagram. “It was a huge honor to be part of your universe. The experience I had on The Fantastic Four playing Sue Storm/Invisible Woman was so meaningful as a young actress and made a huge impact on me. We will miss you, Stan Lee.”

Kylie Jenner joins Long List of Celebs Who Don’t Show Their Babies Faces Online; Here’s Why

I saw a few reports about how makeup mogul and reality TV star Kylie Jenner has selected to stop showing her daughter Stormi’s face on social media after a few mean trolls left nasty comments about the infant.

As Celebrity Baby Scoop reported, “fans noticed that Stormi’s face was hidden and one follower, in particular, noted that she had ‘cut her baby out’, Jenner replied, ‘Yeah I cut my baby out. I’m not sharing photos of my girl right now.'”

Reportedly, she was excited to share her baby with the world but has had to retreat amidst the mean trolls, and her beau and Stormi’s dad Travis Scott is doing the same, only showing her tiny Nikes in a recent Snap Story.

I cannot say I blame her. One of this blog’s most viewed post is about Aoki Lee, the brilliant daughter of Russell Simmons and our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alum Kimora Lee Simmons, who avoids posting photos of her face on her own Instagram page, and how I believe it stems from nasty comments from the public about her looks.

The harsh critique from the public probably explains why Beyonce famously shielded her daughter Blue Ivy‘s face when she shared photos of her during her infancy to toddler years, and Kelly Rowland for the first year of her son’s life as well.

If you follow actress Zoe Saldana‘s social media, you will see that she was telling t to share a photo of her twin boys, Cy and Bowie and their baby brother either but has recently.

Over the pond, singer and TV presenter Rochelle Humes features many snaps of her daughters on Instagram but none of her face.

Another one of this blog’s bumpwatch alums Keisha Knight-Pulliam also refuses to show her daughter Ella Grace’s face on social media.

Then there are the other extremes who don’t show their children’s faces at all, like Kerry Washington, Eva Mendes, Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively until recently.

The fans demand it, and many fuss about being denied the chance to gawk at their babies, as if it their right like these who commented under one of Knight-Pulliam’s pics.

And those who do share like Tia Mowry and Solange Knowles have found themselves having to snap back and put mean trolls in their place who called both their sons ugly, as recently as a few years ago.

These reactions prove why it is not a bad idea to keep something private.

Ciara Introduces Sienna Princes After Shielding Daughter’s Face From Public For Almost a Year

At a time and era when several celebrities successfully purposefully shield their babies’ faces from the media, pop singer Ciara has decided to share her daughter’s for the first time in a new app.

On Thursday, the Body Party singer introduced her daughter with NFL quarterback Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks on the app called TraceMe.

“I’m so excited to be opening up my world to you on TraceMe,” Ciara told fans who follow her on the app. “You guys know that I tend to be private with a lot of things, but with TraceMe I can have a genuine, unfiltered connection with you all.”

It also bucks the older tradition of having a big reveal on a magazine for millions of dollars given at one time, celebrities took home million+ dollar paydays for sharing their baby’s first photos.

Gone are those days because with the advent of social media, a lot of celebs are sharing their babies first pics with their fans directly, though not all.

http://bellyitchblog.com/2015/04/celebrity-moms-share-first-photos-of.html

Zoe Saldana, Beyonce and Kelly Rowland for the first year, Brit Rochelle Humes  and others didn’t open their children up to public scrutiny. Today, Keisha Knight-Pulliam still keeps her daughter Grace’s face from her social media feed.

We never have seen Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s children and most likely will never see them either. Given all the ridicule and shaming celebs like Tia Mowry received over her son, and Kimora Lee Simmons’ daughter Aoki Lee, we can see why.

Ciara explained why she chose to reveal.

“My motivation for this was to give back for all of your support throughout the years,” she explained. “We now have a special place where you can get to know more about me, and see all the fun things that go on with my music, my family, my fashion and so much more.”

The model and dancer has a 3 1/2 year old son named  Future Zahir Wilburn with her ex fiance hip hop performer Future.

12 Times Celebrity Moms Posed ‘Glam Squad While Momming’ Photos in Social Media

img_6918

Alas, it looks like it now officially a must-do trendy thing for working moms in Hollywood to do: Pose for the official “momming while being serviced by a glam squad” photo.

And…look, Avatar 2 star Zoe Saldana is the latest to join the club!

The Guardians of the Galaxy actress posted a photo on her Instagram account of her tending to her infant son, Zen, while getting primped and polished for some red carpet event, perhaps.  “You do what you have to do to be there….  #workingmom” she captioned the photo in both English and her native Spanish.

Before Saldana did it, the likes of Audra McDonald, Molly Sims, Miranda Kerr, P!nk, Terri Seymour, Ali Landry, Alyssa Milano, and Jessie James Decker have all share social media photos of themselves in the throws of dolling up as a working mom in Hollywood.

728x90-1
Gisele Bundchen may have been the unofficial mother  of this genre of photos. When she did it in 2013, the Victoria Secret model she caught a lot of flak for those who said she was being vain and using motherhood to call attention to herself — not just her then-one-year old daughter Vivian Lake.

giseleb

The Brazilian Supermodel’s famous breastfeeding while getting glam shot was controversial because vanity and “glamity” aren’t supposed to co-exist with motherhood and breastfeeding, socially. Aaaah humbug!

Shameless actress Emily Rossum joined in the fun of criticizing Bundchen by posting a parody of Bundchen’s photos by copying it to a tee using a doll. Okay, Emily. Sure.

img_6916

But we are able to recognized the value to the image despite what the critics say. In the past, in tinsel town  (and Bollywood) getting pregnant and having a family can disrupt a woman’s career but not so much anymore.

As we’ve shared before, motherhood isn’t halting opportunities and production can and do work around a star’s pregnancy. In recent years, many celebrity parents are showing their social media fans that they don’t let motherhood interfere with their work either. They can do both.

Again, since Bundchen’s photo, other celebrity women like LilyAldridge, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian and Kandi Burruss have shared photos of themselves tending to their babies while getting glammed up for an event.

Our 2017 People’s Choice Awards Run down

people's choice awards red carpet 2017

Blake Lively, Kristen Bell, Ali Arter and Jennifer Lopez attended the 2017 People’s Choice Awards.

I love the People’s Choice Awards, held this year at Microsoft Theater on January 18, 2017 in Los Angeles, California, for several reasons: 1) the nominees include a broad array of actors, actresses and TV shows, movies and bits that the average person enjoys, not just critics, film producers and elites; 2) they spread the love around and there isn’t one show or person that dominates all the awards; and 3) they have fun category like best collaboration. I mean the nominees this year for that category included:

Conan O’Brien’s Ride Along with Ice Cube and Kevin Hart

Ellen DeGeneres and Britney Spears’ Mall Mischief

James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke with Adele

Lip Sync Battle with Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum

Saturday Night Live with Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon

How fun, eh?!?

Henson, Viola Davis, for example. See…what I mean? They nominate everyone!

And then there were the winners: Jennifer Lopez, who stunned in a Reem Acra gown, Brian Atwood shoes, and H. Stern jewels won for Favorite TV Crime Drama Actress.

Brand new second-time mom Blake Lively showed out in in a black fringe Elie Sabb mini dress to pick up her win for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress for her role in The Shallows.

Kristen Bell got two: a win for the Favorite Actress in a  New TV Series for her role in The Good Place and her popular movie Bad Moms won for Favorite Comedic Movie.

Is Aoki Lee What Happens When a Celeb Child Grows Being Called Ugly by Public?

aoki lee and ming lee simmons

Ming Lee and Aoki Lee Simmons plant a kiss on their dad Russell Simmons.

Kimora Lee Simmons first two children, daughters Aoki Lee and  Ming Lee have grown to be beautiful young ladies, but having grown in the overly critical public eye has not been easy. This is especially true considering the overemphasis of beauty for young women and how mean the public can be. Social media has been a blessing and curse for celebrities.

On one hand, it gives them access to fans and helps them prove their brand relevance and importance by enabling them to quantify fans.  It can be used as a tool to keep them famous and relevant. On the other hand, social media make it too easy to get direct contact with people in the public eye and along with the good of being able to show off their  filter-free and authentic selves, celebs also open a window and let in all the insecure, petty, jealous and downright meanies who love to troll and diss them too.

And people do not stop when it comes to commenting on the beauty of a celebrity child.

For example, I was doing some online research recently and bumped into Aoki Lee’s Instagram page. I immediately noticed that she doesn’t ever show her face in any of her photos. Now it could be because she wants to de-emphasize her looks seeing as though she is a self-described historian and coder on her page.

It is a contrast from her sister Ming who is as statuesque as their mom and is perfectly fine flossing and showing off her fab self and her fab life that goes with on her Instagram.

We like to drink tea ☕️ A photo posted by Ming Lee Simmons (@mingleesimmons) on

But then I thought that perhaps Aoki hides her face to shield herself from all the negativity that litters the comment section under celebrity social media pages. It’s the type of stuff that has led many to quit social media.

I remember bumping into a lot of shady comments about Kimora’s daughters’ looks on the gossip blogs.

simmons

Thus, there is no wonder some celebs elect to hide their children’s faces from the public. You’ve never even ever seen Kerry Washington or Eva Mendes’ children… ever.

And as I moved over to Ming Lee’s photo, I see that one of the first comments on a really beautiful beach photo comes from a couple of girls calling her ugly and talking bad about her looks.  Most people however reply about her beauty in most of her posts.

And that is a shame that all we care about is the attractiveness of famous people.

#truth.com

A photo posted by JJ Ghatt (@jjghatt) on

It also explains why Beyonce famously shielded her daughter Blue Ivy‘s face when she shared photos of her during her infancy to toddler years. Zoe Saldana is yet to share a photo of her twin boys, Cy and Bowie,  either. Over the pond, singer and TV presenter Rochelle Humes features many snaps of her daughter on Instagram but none of her face.

And those who do like Tia Mowry and Solange Knowles have found themselves having to snap back and put mean trolls in their place who called both their sons ugly, as recently as last year.

Celeb parents can do what they can as long as they can to shield their kids from public scrutiny for as long as possible. It is essential considering the kids never asked for the spotlight. But…the minute they grow into their own and open up their own social media account, they”ll have to face it on their own.

And Aoki’s faceless Instagram page could be an example of one outcome.
