9 Facts About C-Section Recovery They Don’t Tell You

Speaking of unspoken truths about C-Sections, writing for HuffPo  Kate Auletta offers 9 things no one tells you about C-Section.

DURING THE SURGERY

1. That “mild tugging sensation” line was clearly first said by a man. Mild is perhaps the understatement of the century. You feel like the wind is being taken out of you as your teeth chatter from the anesthesia. This is not a surgery for claustrophobes, as you’re completely stuck on the table — arms pinned down — while the inability to breathe overwhelms you.

IN THE HOSPITAL

2. The catheter keeps you company in the days following birth because you can’t really walk to the bathroom without those trusty ab muscles helping you out (more on that below). And then, as in all cases with a catheter, you have to learn to pee again — the longer the catheter is in, it seems, the harder it is to remember how to pee. Also not fun when you have a nurse and some loved ones waiting outside the bathroom door and you feel like you’re 5 again.

3. Have someone teach you how to even get up and out of bed. Congratulations! Your ab muscles are completely non-existent now. The good news: Your arms are gonna get buff.

AT HOME

4. Do yourself a solid and go to your local drug store (or better yet, send someone else) to buy some big-ass high-waisted underwear. You’re not gonna want anything — zippers, buttons, elasticized underwear — coming near your stomach, especially the birth area, for a while.

5. Walking is a challenge. Your core is called your core for a reason. Go easy on yourself.

6. Those drugs are your best friend. Give yourself some time to wean off the heavy stuff. Stock up on Aleve, which you’ll also need daily, and be prepared to use it A LOT.

Gabrielle Union’s 9 Miscarriages Show Why You Shouldn’t Make Assumptions About Childless Women

Being Mary Jane star Gabrielle Union opens up about suffering 8 or 9 miscarriages, and having fertility struggles in her new book, “We’re Going to Need More Wine.”

The actress writes in the book, which is a collection of essays, “for three years, my body has been a prisoner of trying to get pregnant—I’ve either been about to go into an IVF cycle, in the middle of an IVF cycle, or coming out of an IVF cycle.”

Union and Miami Heat NBA basketball player Dwyane Wade have been married since 2014.

She also talks about how being a stepmom to her husband’s three sons from previous relationships, 15-year old Zaire, 10-year old Zion and 3-year old Xavier changed her mind on wanting to have her own children.

“I never wanted kids,” she shared. “Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them.”

In a December 2014  interview with Uptown magazine, Union opened up about that desire.

“I think my brain and my heart are screaming baby fever… I’ve lasted 42 years without having a human being come from one of my orifices and I feel okay and fulfilled and happy,” she said. “If it does happen, it’s a miracle—a medical miracle at least. I mean, we’d love to. We’ll see what my ovaries say.”

She told the site that if she does not conceive, she will be okay. “I have really awesome stepkids, so I feel equally as fulfilled.”

But alas, we know that the plans to have a baby had started since way back then and she is still on that journey.

While working on starting her family, the Birth of a Nation actress has to endure the pain of constant rumors about her being pregnant.

Ugh! The dreaded celebrity bump watch speculation!

“Once a month I look like I’m in my second trimester because I’m bloated,” she shared, referring to the side-effects of her IVF injections. “It leads to the questions and it leads to the rumors and anytime I go into a doctor’s office I feel like I’m a member of SEAL Team Six undercover because I don’t want people to speculate.”

Then it’s the constant prodding by well-meaning people who just ask invasive and insensitive questions.

“For so many women, and not just women in the spotlight, people feel very entitled to know, ‘Do you want kids?’” Union said. “A lot of people, especially people that have fertility issues, just say ‘no’ because that’s a lot easier than being honest about whatever is actually going on. People mean so well, but they have no idea the harm or frustration it can cause.”

And there you have it! The reason why one should never make presumptions and impose on women’s private live about family-starting.

You can pre-order the book now though it won’t be released until October 17.

US Postal Service’s New Stamp Honors First Children’s Book Featuring A Black Child

This week, the United States Postal Service issued a brand new set of cool Snowy Day Forever stamps in honor of the work of Caldecott Medal winner Ezra Jack Keats, author of the 1962 book, “The Snowy Day“.

It’s the first mainstream children’s book in which an African-American child served as the central character.

The stamps were unveiled at a dedication ceremony on Wednesday, October 3rd at the Brooklyn Public Library Central Library in Brooklyn, New York.

Diversity in books and media matters especially for children who are not used to seeing themselves reflected positively in mainstream culture and so it is great that the Postal Service has done this.

Speaking of diversity in imgagery, we also invite you to check out a recent interview with Disney star Zendaya over her efforts to get more black families featured on the channel!

Thank You Tamera Mowry-Housley for Raising Awareness About C-Section Postpartum Woes

Tamera Mowry-Housley shared some of her own personal insight into some of the pains that women who undergo a C-Section endure when viewers of her FOX panel talk show The Real started to reply to a segment today on the show.

One follower who replied to her general tweet about the realities of C-section especially when you’re nursing.

“I know sum1 whose c-section stitching came undone just from tryin to get out of the shower,” the Twitter user Eunice responded.

To that, The Real co-host said hers “came undone when” she “had to pick up” her son, Aden. Ouch!

Mowry-Housley and her husband FOX News Correspondent Adam Housley welcomed daughter Ariah Talea in July 2015 and son Aden Tanner in November 2012.

What followed was heartwarming and great for awareness building. Many other users offered their own stories which could elevate the understanding among those who have never had a C-section or have misconceptions about it.

I know personally,I could relate to the one about the guts on the tray. My husband almost passed out when she made the mistake of peering over the surgery screen and got an eyefull of entrails! Eeeek!

“Women don’t get enough credit for enduring this surgery(they put your organs on a tray, my Husband looked)&then going right into motherhood,” a woman named Dawn Venosa Mannix added to the discussion.

“It hurt to laugh, sneeze, cough, pee. Everything hurts,” chimed in user named Beach Bunni.  “We still have to care for our newborn while healing. It makes us stronger though.”

So true, sister!

7. I’m getting really real here now: Get some Colace. Your first bowel movement will hurt that much more since you have no stomach muscles with which to push. But man, will you be proud when you walk out of that bathroom.

8. You can’t lift anything because of how it can affect your core, and you can’t really lean over to even empty the dishwasher. Basically, best case scenario is that you’re an immobile, milk-producing machine with a baby attached to your breast sideways cause you’re scared he or she will kick the scar.

9. Don’t worry. No matter how your child is born, it’ll still likely be the best thing that ever happens to you, you tired shell of your former self.

Thank you!

So, Yeah, This InstaFamous Fitness Instructor Has a Six Pack 9-Days PostPartum

Australian fitness instructor and Instagram influencer Chontel Duncan showed off a photo of her six pack taken only 9 days after giving birth to her second child, son Swayde, this past September 20.

In the caption to the September 29 Instagram post, the former Miss Universe finalist anticipates that she would get mad backlash and hate for posting such an image which is unrealistic for we would guess 90% of the women who give birth.

“Now before anyone jumps down my throat saying anything negative, think before you type,” the Australian starts in a photo of herself in a bra and panty with a super trim tummy exposed. “Everyone is unique and different in their own special way. There is no ‘one journey’ or one way, this is my ‘normal.’”

The statuesque new mom-to-two catapulted to viral stardom back in November 2015 when she posted a bump-to-bump photo of herself and a training partner who was as far along in her pregnancy as Duncan at the time. She was pregnant with her now 18-month old son Jeremiah at the time.

“Each woman carries differently and this most certainly doesn’t mean one is doing something wrong or not healthy,” she wrote in her November 2015 post. “We both have healthy growing babies & we both have had incredible pregnancies so far, feeling amazing & full of energy.”

Swayde came into the world via C-section and the 28-year-old added to her caption that she was “blessed” with an easy pregnancy free of morning sickness.

Must be nice!

Proven Tips to Help Your Child Learn to Deal with Disappointment

In a culture where everyone is a winner, the opportunities to help children learn to deal with disappointments are becoming fewer and further in between. The next time your playdate gets cancelled last minute or the restaurant runs out of chocolate milk, help your child work through those feelings instead of trying a quick fix in hopes of shielding him from disappointment. When you do, you’ll be helping him develop important life skills that will last a lifetime.

Why Learning to Deal with Disappointment is Important

Life is full of disappointments. Whether a friend doesn’t want to share her toys at a playdate, she gets snubbed on the playground or she doesn’t earn a spot on the cheer team, children do and will experience disappointment. A child who learns to deal with disappointment from a younger age is better able to deal with disappointment as an adult.

Acknowledge Your Child’s Feelings

While it can be tempting to simply tell your child everything will be okay or let him know that in the grand scheme of life what happened isn’t a big deal, don’t. Instead, acknowledge your child’s feelings. A simple “I know that you’re disappointed that you can’t play at Charlie’s house. You were really looking forward to it” lets your child know that it’s okay to feel sad, bummed out and upset about the last minute change of plans. Learning to identify and communicate feelings is an important lesson you can help your child learn.

Empathize with Your Child

Put yourself in your child’s shoes. If you found the perfect pair of shoes but learned the store didn’t have them in your size, you’d be pretty bummed out. That’s how your child feels when he’s been anticipating something, only to learn things won’t be going his way. Imagine how your child feels when he’s disappointed and offer emotional support and comfort.

Find the Positive

Every cloud has a silver lining. While you certainly don’t want to minimize your child’s feelings, it is okay to help him brainstorm what good can come out of the experience. Perhaps your child didn’t make the team his friend was on. Helping him to discover the possibility that there could be new friendships to be made can help give the situation a positive spin.

Talk About What You Can and Can’t Change

Some things we can change and some things we can’t. While your child can’t change that she didn’t get selected for a key part in the play, she can change her response to the outcome. Empowering your children to change what they can helps them feel more in control of their feelings and the situation at hand.

Encourage Problem Solving

Something didn’t go your child’s way. Now what? His favorite restaurant was closed. Now what? While your child may not be able to come up with the solution, you can certainly guide him to one. Would you like to go for pizza or for Mexican? Helping your child find solutions to disappointments can help him to refocus on what he can control.

Be a Role Model

Children learn what they live. One of the best things parents can do to help their children learn to deal with disappointments is to handle disappointments in the way they would like their children to. When you encounter a disappointment, say when you’re supposed to have a mom’s night out but it gets cancelled last minute, let your child see and hear you working your feelings of disappointment out. Talk through your feelings, brainstorm your solutions out loud and let your child see you come out okay on the other end of it.

How you help your child handle small disappointments now will set him up for how he handles big disappointments down the road. The next time you’re tempted to shield your child from feeling disappointed, take a step back and consider the learning opportunity at hand. Walk him through his f

The event took place on Sunday, October 1 at the Calamigos Beach Club on the beach.

…But we did see a snap of the game “The Pride Is Right ” complete with a host where guests could win prizes as music from the Lion King musical played in the background.

And we also noticed a photo booth was available and peeped a couple of cute Labs with the clip-on manes dressed up as Lions.  Cute!

Also, spotted a nice three tiered cake in the color scheme and nicely wrapped themed cookies favors on a cute candy table with baby Kenzo’s named spelled out.

Kimora Lee Simmons’ son with ex Djimon Honsou is also named Kenzo, which is Japanese for strong and healthy.

Another one of our Bellyitch Alums, Eudoxie Agnan Bridges and her rapper husband Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, their couples BFFwere there.

Court: Pregnancy No Reason to Grant Defendant Bail

A New Jersey appellate court has ruled that pregnancy should not be given greater weight than other factors when a judge decides if a defendant should remain in custody pending trial.

The ruling issued Friday overturned a state judge’s decision that Imani Williams could be released pending her trial on aggravated assault and robbery charges.

Lawyers for the 20-year-old Riverside woman had argued she shouldn’t be detained because she had a job and was about two-months pregnant. But Burlington County prosecutors argued that Williams could be violent, has an extensive history of criminal activity and past violations of probation.

The appellate court found that the judge gave Williams’ pregnancy “undue weight,” noting that the jail system would be able to provide her with appropriate prenatal care.

The panel ruled that pregnancy, like any other medical condition, should only be considered for its impact on the risk of a defendant posing a danger to the community, obstructing justice or failing to appear in court. But it did note that some pregnancies, whether they be high-risk or have a more direct impact on a defendant’s health and ability to appear in court, could outweigh other concerns in determining if a defendant should be detained.
