You Don’t Have to Stick With How Society Defines Family Roles

dc

Guest post by Tod Jacobs

We tend to think of relationship roles as oppressive and demanding. While at times there are aspects where people are taken advantage of in this area, but ultimately having a role helps us get a stronger grip of who we are.

Roles are not demanded by our gender, but we should take on parts in the house and outside the home that makes us feel valuable. Often sharing the exact same workload can be painful in a relationship because we tend to tell the other how to do things, rather than celebrate their individual contributions.

Defining Your Roles

As a society, we naturally feel the need to follow the traditional roles in a marriage. The mother is often tasked with maintaining the household, caring and raising the children, and often running errands as needed. The father role is usually tasked with providing the income and taking care of other household areas that the mother cannot, such as maintenance, yard work, and more.

However, you must remember your marriage does not need to follow society’s views, and for some marriages, they may even do things culturally different.

The most important thing to decide is what works for both of you and is it fair. Some things that can be a team effort may include:

Generating Income

Childcare

Household Maintenance

Daily Routines (such as cooking then cleaning up)

There may be some areas that you will gravitate toward more than others, perhaps this is based on your enjoyment or experience.

An example of this may be the man wants to do the yard work because he has a nice mower and enjoys using that time to listen to an audiobook or something.

By allowing him to have that space and task, it will let him contribute to making your yard look great but will also give him an outlet for alone time and the chance to listen to his audiobook. T

his may act as a stress reliever and a form of self-care, which is something you never want to deny your partner.

We get so wound up in the argument of who should be doing what so it’s a great idea to sit down and talk about what needs to get done daily then find ways to work together to split the workload and accomplish them together.

This way, you don’t have one person feeling that they need to give so much more, and the other person has it super easy with hardly any responsibilities on their plate.

It all comes down to finding balance, between each other, and what you want to do regarding encompassing roles. Find out what makes you happy in and out of the house and give yourself the role that makes you feel honored in the home with your spouse. And don’t forget – always make sure to stop and be grateful for one another’s contributions from these roles.

A simple thank you or compliment about what they accomplished can go a long way and feel appreciated, especially when life throws curve balls that make even simple tasks more challenging.

‘Torn’ Singer Natalie Imbruglia Expecting First Child Solo via Sperm Donor and IVF

Singer Natalie Imbruglia, most famous for her 2000s hit “Torn“, announced recently that she is expecting her first child at age 44, thanks to modern science and use of a sperm donor and IVF.

The star shared the news on her Instagram page and then shared it via Twitter.

“As you can see from the pic . . . there is another announcement . . . (no I haven’t swallowed a watermelon),” she wrote of the first photo in the Instagram gallery. “I’m expecting my first child this Autumn. For those of you that know me, this has been something I have wanted for a very long time and I’m blessed that this is possible with the help of IVF and a sperm donor – I won’t be saying anything more on that publicly. I’m so excited about this next adventure . . . a new album and I’m going to be a mum!”

She also used the occasion to announce she is newly signed with BMG music group and is working on a new project.

While many celebrity women like Sandra Bullock, Kristin Davis, and Charlize Theron, Sharon Stone and Denise Richards, who were not in a committed relationship have adopted children, few have gone the route (publicly) of getting artificially inseminated by a donor.

Model Monica Cruz, who is also the sister of actress Penelope Cruz, did so in 2013 and welcomed daughter Antonella Cruz shortly after.

Monica too stayed away from prying questions.

Monica said she stayed away from the limelight and  “isolated” herself to avoid answering tough questions about the circumstances of her pregnancy.

“I wanted to avoid, above all, that they spoke about possible fathers, or the possible candidates to be it,” she told a Spanish magazine El Pais in January. She decided later to not perpetuate an already taboo subject and to come out in public with the news.  “So I have decided to tell all. To become pregnant, I turned to artificial insemination… I want to tell also so I can have the opportunity to show my thanks to all those anonymous men that give many women like me, the dream of their lives.”

8 Months Pregnant Mom Saves Drowning Boy at Beach

An 8-months pregnant Minnesota mom who was at the beach teaching her tots how to swim paused her lessons to save another child who was drowning nearby.

According to Fox 9, Stephanie Swedberg, a former lifeguard was at Crystal Beach Park in Burnsville, Minnesota Sunday morning, teaching her 3-year-old twins to swim when about 20 feet away she noticed a group of boys horsing around in pretty deep water.

“I didn’t realize anything was off until I saw one of the moms fully dressed, sprinting into the water and screaming for somebody to help her son,” Swedberg told the news station. “Then I looked over and I saw one of the boys unable to keep his head above the water. He wasn’t screaming… he was just thrashing around, bobbing a little bit.”

She then handed off her son and sprung into action bringing the boy back to safety. Swedberg told the boy to keep up with his own swimming lessons and encouraged him to “maybe become a lifeguard” someday in the future.

Believe it or not, though she worked as a lifeguard for five Summers in her youth, Sunday was her first rescue!

Impressive!

Do not try this at home but yeah, pregnant women are pretty amazing!

Despite the fact that she had been a lifeguard for five summers when she was younger, Swedberg said this was her first rescue.

Woman Who Cannot Produce Breastmilk is Hounding New Mom Neighbor to Give Up Hers

A woman who was expecting a baby the same time as a neighbor wants helps deciding how to respond to the neighbor’s demand for her breastmilk.

The new mom sought out the advice of Slate’s online’s  “Dear Prudence” advice column, penned by Daniel Mallory Ortberg, and explained :

“My neighbor feels entitled to my breast milk: I have lived in the same apartment building as ‘Tara’ for two years, but we have never been more than acquaintances. We started talking more when we both got pregnant, although still casually.”

She went on to say that she saw Tara a few days after she gave birth, and asked her how it was going.

Tara “burst into tears and told me that she didn’t think she would be able to breastfeed. She sounded so heartbroken about not nursing (with comments like ‘my baby is unlucky to have me for a mother’) that I offered to give her a few of my stored bags of breast milk to at least ease her mind,” the reader explained.

Tara accepted the offer “enthusiastically,” and the reader gave her four bags of milk that day. It was only a matter of hours before Tara’s behavior took a turn for the aggressive. “The next morning I had more than a dozen texts from Tara, wanting to set up a schedule for me to drop off more milk,” she wrote. “The texts made it clear that she expected me to provide her with enough breast milk to feed her daughter exclusively.”

She peppered the neighbor with excuses but was met with a response to each one.

“I tried offering excuses, none of which she would accept,” she shared. “If I said I didn’t think I could produce enough milk for two babies, she replied that mothers of twins do it all the time. If I said I didn’t want to spend any more time pumping or nursing, she said I could pump on one breast while feeding my son on the other.”

She said that Tara soon resorted to guilting tactics, sending “pictures of her crying daughter with captions like ‘Faye is so sad that her bottle has yucky formula! She misses her yummy breast milk!'” The reader lamented, “I don’t know what to do. Tara won’t stop texting me, and I’m worried that if I block her number she will start coming to my apartment to confront me in person. My wife and I do not have the ability or desire to move, but I can’t live with this.”

She hoped that the advice columnist, , could offer some words of wisdom.

Fascinating request! Read what the advice column and readers had to offer here.

Study: Pregnancy Is Like Running A Marathon– Literally

According to a new study conducted in the journal, Science Advances, when it comes to pushing forward limits of human endurance, pregnancy is unmatched, coming only second to athletic sports and other competitive events.

The study

The study, the results of which were published in June made some interesting observations. For the same, participants were made to compete in athletic events like long-distance running, marathons, reaching the point of exhaustion and depleting the body’s energy sources. While these were all high-intensity workouts, it was observed that mothers through their pregnancy end up exhausting themselves the same way at a lower intensity over the nine-month period, without actually competing in a marathon.

While athletes were able to endure their intensity for short periods, but when it came to longer periods, they weren’t able to do the same.

Experts also found out that the endurance levels of athletes were only a notch higher than the metabolic rates pregnant women experienced.

TODAY show Meteorologist On Pretending to Be OK After Miscarriage

Dylan Dreyer and husband

Great news for TODAY show meteorologist Dylan Dreyer who just announced that she is expecting her second child after revealing earlier this year that she suffered a miscarriage.

Dreyer is already mom to 2-year old son Calvin whom she shares with husband since 2012 Brian Fichera, but opened up in a big away after show co-host Jenna Bush Hager announced her third pregnancy, and co-anchor Hoda Kotb revealed she had adopted a second baby girl.

“I’m devastated, and I have to go to work on the ‘Today’ show and be happy and smiling and pretend like nothing’s wrong,” she recalled. “We push [emotions] down and get through the show, I go to the doctor and they do an ultrasound. The baby’s still in there. It’s fluke bleeding.”

It is quite refreshing to see more people in the public eye open up about miscarriage and infant loss given how the topic has been hush hush taboo and pretty mush an unspoken topic publicly before.

“I just want people to know that, yeah, I’m kind of going through it with you,” she said.

Bravo and Kudos and Congrats on the impending arrival!

It’s another boy, she revealed on set with her castmates!

Gabrielle Union and Kaavia James’ Mommy and Me Breathtaking Shoot

Gabrielle Union shared the most adorable high fashion mommy and me photo this week featuring her daughter Kaavia James Wade, and the best part is she was wearing a caftan from a designer from my native Sierra Leone, West Africa.

On Tuesday, the actress and America’s Got Talent judge shared a fashion photo taken by photographer April Belle, which she captioned, “Settled and Serving.”

She was wearing a colorful aquamarine two piece bikini with intricate ethnic shapes at the trim while draped with a coordinated Aphrodite Goddess Kaftan  from Sierra Leone native Sai Sankoh‘s self-titled debut fashion line and retails for $295.

My story is a lot like Sankoh’s in that I too arrived in the US as an immigrant as a child and eventually hosted a series of websites and blogs.

According to a recent feature in Yahoo! News, Sankoh recently moved to Dallas, Texas with her sister when she was bit with the designing bug and began crafting designs, and used her celebrity contacts and past work to get a series of stars to wear her Havana Collection.

I am a fan and have featured Sankoh’s Because I Am Fabulous blog and her African Luxe magazine in the past on this blog. The now defunct BecauseImFabulous.com site used to feature breakdown of celebrity Red Carpet and other fashion features.

And now she’s done with that and focused on her line and on getting A-Listers to wear her designs. Love the focus!

“Thanks for doing my kaftan such justice,” Sankoh captioned her repost of the Union photo later.

A recent feature by Lucille Dyosi in Medium characterized the pieces as “glamorous, sophisticated luxury resort wear that can easily be styled from boardroom to the beach.”

I also love that Sankoh’s kaftans are perfect for maternity shoots and for fashion shoots that travel bloggers have while on vacation abroad in places like Mykonos, Greece and Dubai.

Other celeb fans include Destiny’s Child alum Michelle Williams and author and media personality Sarah Jakes Roberts, daughter of famed Bishop T.D. Jakes.

Of the line of colorful clothes, Sainkoh said:

” My recent collection ‘lasting havana’ is inspired by my home country Sierra Leone. We have an amazing culture that I think the world needs to see. Also the flora and fauna amaze me especially in summer season, the colours, the bright and overall landscape during that time are just breathtaking. They are the inspiration behind this collection.”

She also said she has plans to build a factory in Sierra Leone eventually and to help another generation prosper as well.

I’m waiting for the baby and girls versions after seeing Kaavia’s coordinated with her mom as I was loving Kaavia’s matching Ankara print dress and bow tie headwrap which we first saw back on July 6 on ther baby’s Instagram page.

Wade and Union married in August 2014 after five years of dating in a lavish ceremony in Miami.

The couple welcomed baby Kaavia in November, via surrogate. Wade is also dad to three sons — 5 1/2 year old Xavier Zechariah, 12-year old Zion Malachi Airamis and 7-year old Zaire Blessing Dwyane — and guardian to his nephew 17-year old Dahveon.

Celeb Moms of Singles, Twins & Triplets At London’s The Lion King Premiere

A mom of one, a mom of twins and a mom of triplets met in London.

All three previously covered “Bellyitch Bumpwatch” alumsMeghan Markle, Beyonce Knowles Carter, and Pharelle Williams‘ wife Helen Lasichanh (who gave birth to the couple’s triplets in 2017) gathered at the European premiere of the live action remake of the 1994 Disney animated film The Lion King on Sunday.

The event took place at London’s Odeon Leicester Square where the celebs walked the “yellow carpet” which also featured black lion paw prints during its star-studded arrivals.

Beyonce, who voices Nala greeted the former Meghan Markle for the first time since Duchess of Sussex presented her and her hubby Jay Z with the 2018 Brit Awards for Best International Group.

The power couple accepted via video acceptance while standing in front of a portrait of the Duchess wearing a crown, back in December before the Duchess gave birth to her first child, son Archie, with husband Prince Harry.

The two celeb moms greeted each other warmly, with Markle in a black A line tea length Jason Wu Collection Mesh Panel Fit and Flare Dress with sheer sleeves and bodice and Beyonce, dressed in a thigh high slit draped yellow gown.

“Hello my Princess” Beyonce can be seen mouthing before a very warm hug, followed by a friendly hug from Jay Z.

“The baby, so beautiful,” Beyonce then remarked, according to Royal reporter Rebecca English had the scoop on the conversation . “We love you guys.”

At that point, Markle then turned to introduce her husband, who was decked out in a tux. The Prince greeted Beyonce with a kiss on each cheek and Jay-Z with a handshake.

“You’ve been rather busy,” Harry told Beyoncé.

The 444 rapper responded with, “Congratulations on the birth of your baby,” while nodding towards Meghan.

“And how are the twins?” the Prince asked, referencing the superstars’ twins, daughter Rumi and son Sir, born in 2017.

‘”They are not here. They don’t come on every trip,” Bey replied. “We left them at home. They would loved to have been here.”

The Royal couple then greeted Sir Elton John, his husband David Furnish and the Disney president before being introduced to Pharrell Williams who worked on the music in the film.

His wife Helen stayed in the back row but was acknowledged.

“It’s just incredible, you’re in for a great night,” John added.

Harry was humored by Pharrell William’s signature shots tuxedo and his curtsy he did as a joke, I hope.

“I love the look,” Harry said with smile. “It’s phenomenal, seriously. It is just amazing,.”

Also in the line up were actors Billy Eichner, Seth Rogan, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Florence Kasumba.

As part of the film’s rollout, Disney Studios is supporting Protect the Pride, a campaign focused on protecting and revitalizing the lion population.

Specific beneficiaries include the Lion Recovery Fund and the Wildlife Conservation Network.
