Luxe Substitutes for Pampered Housewives on Quarantine

threading

threading

Listen, in these stressful and uncertain times, we should all have one collective goal: Stay indoors and flatten the curve so there will be no more cases of the novel coronavirus and certainly, no more deaths around the globe.

Now the “stay home” part has been hard for some of who keep going out and unfortunately are helping to accelerate the spread of the deadly COVID-19 .  One part of this spread has to do with how pampered and spoiled us Americans and other so-called “First World” dwellers are.

I admit, I miss some stuff.

After having to endure my husband’s weak coffee today, I am realizing that there are certain pampered wife luxuries that I am used to and I am among those struggling with having to do without certain simple luxuries.

But we know this is temporary and there are alternative solutions available to us. Here are my picks of luxe substitutes:

ESPRESSO MACHINE

Today, with all my fave local Starbucks stores closed and our state being issued a Stay-At-Home Directive, I realized I need to invest in an espresso machine to brew my own lattes, Americans and Dopios.

I do not want to spend a lot of money on this machine because I am hopeful and prayerful that we will beat this fast spreading disease this year so I only need a machine to last about a year

The Brentwood GA-12 Espresso and Capuccino maker is an Amazon Choice and has mainly great reviews, and a few really credible bad ones, but at a low $39.99, you cannot beat the price for the level of sustained alertness that I will be getting by not having to settle with plain old coffee. Fellow strong coffee and espresso addicts, get one too and let’s compare.

That got me thinking of other things we took for granted but will quickly need to learn how to do ourselves. For example, because I do occassional YouTube videos, IG Story, Snap and guest appearances, I need to have my nails and hair looking decent.  I have wigs and hats and other options I can use for my head but for my nails, I’m finding I have to resort to my old pre-manicured press on nails.

PRE-MANICURED ACRYLIC NAILS

These days, they are glue on and my fave and reliable brand is Kiss. You can get a pack of French Manicure with enough nails to last you over a month in case you lose one here and there. They look very professional on screen. Order yours from Amazon for just $7.99. Check out how they look on my nails here:

ZOOM

virtual happy hour

I’ve seen all the professionals who have regular offices and work lives meeting up on Zoom and then I saw some of them convert those Zoom accounts to virtual happy hours! I want to host one with my girls! Hmmm. I guess I would first have to sign up for a FREE Zoom account or…. I could try to figure out how the new Google Hangouts work and hook it up that way.

To host a virtual happy hour: (1) pick invitees; (2) decide on dress code (3) select a theme of drinks, like are we having wine, beer or cocktails (4) pick the mode of meet up and set it all up to grid so everyone can see everyone; and finally, (5) appoint someone to provide the music or playlist

People can also log on to the recently launched Viral Happy Hour website, www.viralhappyhour.com, which was started by 50-year-old Atlanta native Keith Greenstein and a couple of his friends.

Noticing how many people were going online to hang out with friends he decided to make it easy to schedule a virtual party. The website offers a simple click-by-click way to create a virtual happy hour, just pick the day, (the time is set for 5:19 p.m. to acknowledge COVID-19), and it sends out a Google Hangout invite to your friends.

Facial Steamer

Now that the spas and cosmetic centers that do Botox are closed, those pesky laugh lines and wrinkles are coming back. It’s time to steam those stuckers out stat and hasten the work of anti wrinkle and regenerate salves and balms we’ve been lathering on our faces to fight the effects of aging.

I’m waiting for The Pure Daily Care’s Nano-Ionic Facial Steamer and Humidifier which is also an Amazon Choice because it’s supposed to be good on black heads. That is a big problem I have. I am that person who loves to see the black heads removed on the pore strips so yeah…I’m missing the facial appointents and hoping this almost $40 steamer will really do the trick! We’ll see!

NANO-IONIC FACIAL STEAMER & HUMIDIFIER

Massager

naipo massage

Since I added two other non-essential luxe service, I figure I might as well recommend once again the Naipo  Shiatsu Back and Neck Massager with heat and deep kneading massage for the neck, back, shoulder, foot and legs. I have had it for two years and enjoy tremendously with no complaints.

See my review here. This massager is great for after work out, for sitting in an uncomfortable home office chair for extended periods of time or just general aches and pains.

Get one for just $50 on Amazon!

Stay healthy and pampered!

Try American Ninja Warrior Junior Host’s Quick Circuit Workout for the Family

American Ninja Warrior Junior Akbar Gbajabiamila and family

Looking for ideas for a fun, kid-friendly workout while social distancing?
American Ninja Warrior Junior host Akbar Gbajabiamila uses a quick circuit work out with his family. The former athlete and father utilizes just  four simple moves with his own kids and helps create an effective family workout session with no equipment required.

1. Start with a body weight cardio sequence:

3 Minutes:

30 second Jumping Jacks

30 second High knees

30 second Butt kickers

30 second Body Squats

30 second Jumping Jacks

30 second Mountain climbers

planks

Photo by Elly Fairytale from Pexels

2. Planks- we love timers in our house. So I get my kids doing one minute circuits with different planks!

– High plank

– Forearm plank

– “Up-Downs” (this is where you go from high plank to forearm plank and alternate which arm you lead with)

3. Animal walks… keeping it fun and educational, I always integrate different animal movements into the exercises with my kids. It keeps them distracted and moving around. Two top favorites:

– Crab walks

– Bear crawls

4. Wrap with relay races. Similar to something done in football called “suicide drills”, now the whole family gets involved.

One kid starts and runs to the end of the driveway, comes back, tags the next, and so forth. We make it a fun competition to see as a team how quickly they can complete the drill.

Nice! Thanks Akbar! Catch  American Ninja Warrior Junior    airing on Universal Kids!

9 Ways to Avoid Hair Loss After Pregnancy

Being a new mom can be one of the most emotionally rewarding — and challenging — experiences a woman faces. And while you may have anticipated your body to go through a whirlwind of changes, you may not have expected your hair to start falling out in clumps.

Also referred to as postpartum hair loss, telogen gravidarum, and telogen effluvium, excessive hair shedding after childbirth (which would occur anywhere between two and four months after giving birth) can affect between 40 and 50 percent of women, according to statistics from the American Pregnancy Association.

“When a woman is pregnant, she has a lot of extra hormones in the body, including estrogen,” says Christine Carlan Greves, a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist in Orlando, Florida. “The estrogen helps protect us from losing our hair. Then when she has the baby, there’s a sudden change in the hormone levels, including a drop in the estrogen. And this shift can cause a response in the body that may affect the hair cycle.”

Hair loss is a normal occurrence for a woman after a pregnancy. Telogen effluvium is the medical term for post-pregnancy hair loss, which happens to nearly 50 percent of women after they give birth. A temporary condition, this hair loss should not cause a woman to become bald or experience visibly thin spots.

Use these tips to reduce or prevent hair loss after pregnancy.

Steps

  1. Avoid hairstyles that pull or stretch your hair. Braids, cornrows, weaves or tight rollers can pull hair and cause stress and trauma to your scalp. Hair that is excessively pulled is more likely to fall out naturally, without the extra issue of telogen effluvium affecting your hair growth cycle.
  2. Maintain a healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are not only naturally health, but they also contain flavonoids and antioxidants that protect hair follicles. Additionally, these foods encourage increased hair growth, which can offset any hair lost after pregnancy.
  3. Add vitamins and nutrients to your diet. Vitamin B complex, vitamins E and C, zinc and biotin help increase hair strength and health. Take extra supplements or eat foods rich in these nutrients and vitamins to help retain pre-pregnancy locks. Try Nature’s Bounty Optimal Solutions Hair, Skin & Nails Formula which gets great reviews.
  4. Select a shampoo with quality ingredients. Shampoos that contain biotin or silica improve hair health and stimulate follicle growth. Use this shampoo regularly and rinse with cold water.
  5. Comb your wet hair with a wide-toothed comb. A wide-toothed comb reduces the amount of pulling and stress you apply to your hair as you attempt to remove tangles after washing it. Excessive pulling of your hair can increase the chances of it falling out.
  6. Reduce the use of heated styling tools. Heated styling tools like curling irons, hot rollers, flat irons and blow dryers dry hair out and may increase hair loss. Allow your hair to air dry and style it naturally. If you must use heated styling tools, use the coolest settings possible or give your hair a cool shot of air afterward with your hair dryer.
  7. Trim split ends. Split ends cause your hair to be less healthy. Unhealthy hair is shed in larger amounts than healthy hair.
  8. Avoid stress. Having a new baby to take care of can create more stress in your life, but try to avoid additional stressful situations or feelings. Stress can cause your hair to fall out or decrease in thickness. Avoid stress to increase your chances of retaining more of your pre-pregnancy hair
  9. Get a shorter haircut. Long hair weighs more and pulls from your scalp with its constant downward pull. Shorter haircuts cause less pressure to your hair follicles, which will decrease chances of increased shedding. A shorter hairstyle may cause your hair to look fuller and healthier, in addition to being easier to take care of than longer styles.

Take it easy and good luck new moms!

Inside Shahs of Sunset’s GG Gharachedaghi’s Moroccan-Themed Baby Shower

Shahs of Sunset star Gholnesa “GG” Gharachedaghi celebrated the upcoming arrival of her first child at a Moroccan -themed baby shower over the weekend.

She also announced during the event that she is expecting a baby boy. Her friend, event planner Anita Gohari, shared video and photos of the event which featured the name “Elijah” spelled out in gold decorative lettering before a backdrop above the dessert tableand the mom-to-be changed into a blue sweater with big blue eyelashes and announced the baby’s sex as well.

Earlier, she wore a neutral color bump-hugging dress with ruching and paid homage to her son sex and name with blue yarn weaved in her box braids and blue tips on her nails with the letter E on each finger.

She confirmed the gender news on a subsequent Instagram story.

“Hey y’all, we are at my baby shower and I just did a wardrobe change. As you guys can see, true blue — I’m having a boy,” the Shahs of Sunset star said on her Instagram Story, while showing off her blue and white manicure.

Gharachedaghi’s co-star, Reza Farahan, also shared the baby’s name in an Instagram post.

“Celebrating @gg_golnesa and sweet baby Elijah at her baby shower!” Farahan captioned a photo with the mom-to-be on Instagram. “Make sure to catch an all new episode of #shahs tonight 9pm @bravotv , it’s ?????? and you’re not going to want to miss a minute of it!”

In October, Gaharachedaghi (who finalized her divorce from Shalom Yeyoushalmi in late 2018) shared that she was expecting her first baby after undergoing IVF using a sperm donor.

Her guests, including current and past cast members like Lilly Ghalichi, vendors and family shared photos in social media

And in exclusive photos in PEOPLE magazine revealed that guests were served food “on two oversized boards, one housing cheeses, charcuterie, vegetables, breads, and other appetizers, while another was flowing with fruits (cantaloupe, strawberries, kiwi, passionfruit, raspberries, dragonfruit, etc.)

They also had salmon, hummus, shrimp, sliders, fries, chicken skewers and lamb chops and got to enjoy a Persian tea (chai) station in honor of Gharachedaghi’s Iranian ancestry.

Hookahs and cocktails like mojitos and micheladas and other alcoholic drinks were available, as well as a variety of flavored waters.

Among her Shahs family attending the event were Mike Shouhed and his girlfriend Paulina Ben-Cohen, Reza Farahan and husband Adam Neely, Destiney Rose, and Shah’s alum Lilly Ghalichi (who attended with her husband, Dara Mir).

Per PEOPLE:

The reality star also used the party as a chance to give back, asking guests to bring unopened essentials for babies (diapers, baby wipes, formula, blankets, clothings, bottles, pacifiers, etc.) in lieu of gifts. All items were donated to Baby2Baby, a Los Angeles-based charity that provides children living in poverty, ages 0-12 years, with necessities that every child deserves. “Everyone’s like, ‘The whole point of having a baby shower is to get the free gifts.’ But I told everybody, ‘I do not want gifts,’ ” Gharachedaghi explained to PEOPLE. “I just feel like, I’m not someone who likes to splurge; I can afford the necessities, and don’t want to spoil my son with fancy, fancy things. So why not use this opportunity to help others for people lacking in life?”

Hustling While Pregnant: Jenna Dewan is Hosting TV Shows and Penning Books

I love actress, dancer and producer Jenna Dewan who is currently expecting her first child with boyfriend of a year Steve Kazee, but is still proving pregnant women do not have to slow down when they are expecting.

I just peeped her new FOX television show Flirty Dancing, which is a US take on a popular UK dating dance show where singles learn a routine and then pair up and dance to see if their dance floor chemistry translates to the dating couch. In the US version, the single dances with two different partners and picks one.

The Step Up alum and featured guest star of medical drama The Resident was still quite pregnant in the early version I saw of the show.

This is not the only thing the former World of Dance host has cooking!

She also just released her first book, “Gracefully You” about self-love and self-actualization and has already done in-store appearances in places like Barnes and Noble.

And in between acting appearances in shows like Supergirl, Witches of East End and American Horror Story: Asylum, in June 2017, Dewan founded Everheart Productions, with a focus on producing female-centric stories for film, television and digital platforms. Dewan will star in the scripted musical drama television series  called Soundtrack this winter.

And she’s looking fabulous balancing it all…

The professional dancer is already mother to six-year-old Everly, whose father is Dewan’s ex-husband Channing Tatum.

It’s been awhile since I stalked checked in with some of our fave pregnant celebs.

They look like they are doing well.

erica mena and safaree samuels gender reveal

Love and Hip Hop‘s Erica Mena has been styling and profiling on Insta and recently revealed during a “gender reveal party” that she and hubby Safaree Samuels are havig a baby girl.

“God I can’t thank you enough,” Erica wrote in an Instagram post that featured footage from the big gender reveal party. “My husband and I are living a dream,” Mena told her fans. “Everything we’ve ever wanted has officially come true.

Meanwhile, country singer Maren Morris, who is expecting her first child — a baby boy with husband Ryan Hurd,  is cracking us up with her funny posts on Twitter.

Her last post was about a quasi back handed compliment she appreciated getting at the nail salon

Actress and Keeping Up with the Kardashians reality TV show bestie Malika Haqq recently went retro posting a nude black and white bump photo at eight months pregnant.

Delivery Day Countdown: 20 Things to Do Before Baby Arrives

Are you in your last month of pregnancy and flustered about what you need to do and worry if you have the time? No fret, cousin JJ is here to give you a checklist of crap you need to haul ass and get done.

A list should ease the stress:

What to Pack in the Baby Bag:

1. A warm and comfortable blanket but one you don’t mind getting ruined with all the juices, balms and secretions that accompany labor. It won’t be the same after. errrr.

2.  Mint or lollipops – You may be restricted from eating. The sugar in the lollipop can help curb hunger pangs and keep you from stink breath. Stink breath is no bueno.

3. Lip balm – You may get dehydrated. Keep your lips moisturized. I like ESOS!

4. Moisturizer – Get a very thick tube of moisturizer. I recommend Aquaphor because you don’t need a lot to do the trick.

5. Smart phone camera or digital camera – No explanation necessary

6. A couple pair of granny undies – But no more because you will get the mesh disposable undies plenty at the hospital. You can even take home extras the nurses bring in your room. They’re the best!

7. Baby going home outfit – This is the outfit you dress baby in when the hospital photography company comes by.

8. Gifts for the nurses – Some go above and beyond to make your short stay pleasant. Purchase a box of candy, or a mini spa kit or a journal or cards. I love Steep Seep’s Grapefruit Bergamot gift set which costs under $20!

9. Music – have a playlist of soothing music on a CD or on your phone’s portable speaker that you can plug in and help you calm down and get through a long labor.

10. Breast pad – You may leak so breast-pads and some Lansinoh Nipple Cream may come in handy for cracked or sore nipples from nursing.

LAST MINUTE NESTING

11. Get the carpets cleaned and get rid of any cat or dog hair and other allergens.

12. Create a music playlist for labor and delivery.

13. Buy all the creams, lotions, medicines, and miscellaneous  items you need for yourself and baby.

14. Buy clear plastic containers to organize baby clothing, accessories, toys and a label maker

15. Organize baby’s clothes and label the bins: newborn, 0 to 3 months, 3 to 6months, 6 to 12 months.

16. Create a “call list” on your smart phone so your hubby, spouse or partner knows who to contact after you give birth.

LAST MINUTE GROOMING

You have to make sure you are presentable for labor and delivery, photos after baby arrives and just for feeling good about yourself and the end of the 40 week journey. Don’t know who said letting yourself go was okay during pregnancy, but they lied. If you feel fresh, clean, primmed and prepped, you will feel energetic and ready for pushing out that baby.

17. Get your nether regions waxed. You really don’t want doctors and nurses seeing your business looking like the Brazilian rain forest. Opt for a Brazilian wax instead. If it’s out of the budget, consider going with Nair Bikini removal gel which will not require you to use a razor and nick yourself, but be careful.

18. Wax your eyebrows. You’ll feel better and look great in the post birth pics. But if you’re going for the Anastasia the Russian Gladiator look, then no.

19. Get a Mani and Pedi – A mani because your hands will be in pics and you don’t want to cut baby with your hang nail. Not good.  A pedi because your toes may be in the air and/or in stirrups during the pushing stage and you don’t want to be embarrassed by crusty and ashy hammer toes in people’s faces.

20. Get a hair appointment and get your hair in braids and/or cornrows. You need a low maintenance style bc you will not have time to do your hair after baby arrives and braided styles look great in pics.

11 Stylish Pieces to Have in Your Fall Wardrobe

fall fashion collage

It’s officially Fall!

Sweater weather is finally here in my neck of the woods where temperatures have now dipped to 60 to 70 degrees which means it’s time for Fall fashion!

There is a slight chill in the air, the leaves have turned to shades of yellow, red and brown and are falling off of the trees, harvest festivals are packed on weekends and stores and cafes are selling all things pumpkin spice.

Autumn is my favorite season of all because it’s not as hot as the Summer, not bone chilling cold as the Winter and I’m not sneezing from Spring allergies. I love Fall seasonal clothing the best and have showcased fall fashion on my fashion Instagram account, Wahmstyle, more than any other type of styles.

Here  are my fave fall looks from past posts that are timeless and never go out of style.

This time of  year, is the best time to pull these items out of the closet:

Plaid Jackets and Shirts

I generally associate plain flannel with this season. It makes me think of chopping wood, apple picking and weekend hikes through trails.

I incorporate plaid in my wardrobe via shirts in various checkered patterns that I wear overtop a knit or jersey tee like in this post below.

The right shirt is soft to touch, and rugged. Pair them with jeans or yoga pants with low boots and you’ve got a winning look.

Designer Scarves

While scarves can be worn in all seasons, you can really show them off and get max functionality out of them in cooler seasons.

I love to wrap mine around my neck and use them as an extra layer of warmth when it’s too warm for a full jacket.

I invested in a Burberry scarf with its signature checkered print because it is a timeless piece and recognizable as such.

I tend to stick with neutral colors so this pattern serves me well as it can be worn with most of my outfits.

You don’t have to stick with logo scarves, as any quality scarf will do and the quality will stand out even if you are wearing a bunch of cheaper fast fashion pieces with it.

Layered accessories

Arguably, you can wear accessories at any time of the year but in the cooler temps, you have an excuse to go BIG and go with chunky heavier necklaces, statement rings and bracelets.

Off the shoulder sweaters

In the early fall, to avoid overheating, people wear lighter sweaters but a good off-the-shoulder sweater can bring the sexy out.

You can get a normal over-sized sweater and slouch it over one shoulder for a Flash Dance esque look!

Studded Black Cowboy Boots

Fall is the start of boots weather and cowboy boots like Fashion Riding boots are a timeless option.

I like wearing a more urban fashion remixed version with less stitching and more buckles at the angle in a low boot.

Sweatshirts

For the weekend and regular athletic or gym-going types, a sweatshirt is a staple. For those who wear them for style, a shirt with a cute saying or logo in the front is a great fall wear option.

Pantsuits

You can always don a pantsuit but in the fall, to me, you have an excuse to wear one less formally over a screen tee for a semi casual biz meeting or event.

Red Nail Polish

I look forward to wearing darkest colors on my nails in the fall and especially red! In my mind, burgundy, magenta, crimson and candy apple red nail polish should be reserved for autumn.

Sweater Dresses

If you get a sheath sweater dress you can add a belt to accentuate your waist or just wear is straight with boots. There are so many options with this item of clothing.

You do have to be careful in warmer early Fall, to not get a too thick dress.

Dark Denim Jeans

You can literally dress up or down a pair of denims in a dark shade with pearls and a cashmere sweater (up) of a tee of sweatshirt(down). I love the versatility and slimming effect of dark denims, especially slim cut or boyfriend cut ones.

Knit Scarves

Like the designer scarf, the knit scarf adds the option of keeping you warm when it’s not yet coat wearing temps out.

You can get a cashmere pashmina and double it up as a blanket to keep you warm in the office

Tips On Creating a Lavish Dorm Room

Trending: The Posh Dorm Room

Things sure have changed since I was younger and in college.

These days, luxe, glammed up dorm rooms are en vogue. Roommates are getting together to coordinate their dorm rooms so they have a more comfy homey feel to them.

And while girls are on this trend more so than boys, the fellas are getting in on it too, decorating their rooms to fit their personalities by adding personal touches beyond just photo collages and posters.

To accomplish a posh dorm room, it’s probably smart to start with the school residential housing policy for what can be in the room and what not. Most schools forbid nailing items to walls, using certain electrical appliances and adding in furniture that the room doesn’t already come with. A quick check will give you a guide.

posh dorm room

Next, start with the essentials and get those from basic box stores like Walmart, Target and Best Buy. Then, determine with the roommate what color palette to go with, Pewter, black, white, pink etc and purchase accessories in the three basic tones or shades of that selected color grouping.

If your kid moves in before getting to talk to the roommate, small accent pillows, frames and lamps can be purchased later during a weekend trip home to bring a color theme together.

posh dorm room

Finally, add the fluff. Go to Discount stores like Home Goods, TJ Maxx, Marshall’s or Ross and the like which sell a lot of cute, quaint and adorable home items with a lot of personality at a heavily discounted price.

If money is not an object, a lot of the upscale and higher end retailers like Pottery Barn, Elle Decor or Ethan Allen Galleries.

Also, if you do not live near any of these places, check out the website Dormify. It has checklists, you can online chat with one of its home stylists and it has decent competitive prices and they ship your order to your room. There is FREE shipping on orders over $75!

International Breastfeeding Week: What You need To Know About Breastfeeding and Implants

Stephanie Canale, M.D., Founder, Lactation Lab

One topic of concern to some mothers with breast implants is whether they present any health risk to their baby through possible contamination of their breast milk. In particular, they ask about whether silicon, silicone gel or platinum used in implants can leak into their breast milk.

Silicon and Silicone

Moms should know that silicon occurs naturally. It is the second most abundant element in the earth’s crust. It is thought to be essential for connective tissues and is found in tendons, bone, skin, hair and nails.  Silicon is used as an anti-foaming agent in fruit juice and is found in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and proshtheses. The only known health hazard results from inhaling crystalline silica dust into the lungs causing silicosis. Silica dust is never used in implants.

Breast implants contain silicone gel, a synthetic polymer made up of silicon, oxygen and other elements, most typically carbon and hydrogen.

Research has reported cases of esophageal dysmotility (slow movement through the esophagus) in infants that were nursing from mothers with silicone implant). Another study reported “rheumatoid-like symptoms” transferred to a child from a breastfeeding mother with silicone implants). However, this study examined only two children.

A larger study did not show any adverse outcomes in infants of breastfeeding mothers with silicone implants. Another study found that there were actually higher levels of silicon in cow’s milk infant formulas than in human milk. (It should be noted that this study was funded by the plastic surgery industry.)

The silicon-containing anti-colic agent simethicone has been widely used for decades and there have not been shown to have any toxic side effects to infants. The American Academy of Pediatrics therefore recommends that mothers with silicone breast implants should breastfeed if they choose to.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs does not feel that the evidence currently justifies classifying silicone implants as a contraindication to breastfeeding.

Bottom line: There is very little reliable data about breastfeeding with implants. Given that silicon is so abundant in our environment, and that there are overwhelming advantages of breastfeeding we strongly encourage women with breast implants to breastfeed if they wish to.

PLATINUM

While the limited evidence available suggests there is little risk from silicon, this may not be the case with platinum, which is used in silicone and saline implants. Platinum is a toxic metal that is especially damaging to early development.

There have been some studies showing significant levels of platinum in silicone breast implant gel and envelopes. Platinum has also been shown to leak out of the implant and accumulate in the tissues of women exposed to silicone breast implants . The question then becomes should women with saline or silicone breast implants be concerned about platinum?

Our research has found only one study to date that looked at platinum in breast milk in mothers that had silicone breast implants. It included 18 women with silicone breast implants and 5 women without ( the control group). The authors examined blood, urine, hair, nails, sweat and the breast milk of these women.

The concentration of platinum in blood did not differ between mothers with exposure to silicone through implants and those without. Both groups did have detectable levels of platinum thought to be related to environmental exposure. Similarly the concentration of platinum in urine did not differ between mothers with exposure to silicone through implants and those without.

However, there was a significant difference in platinum concentration in the hair, nails, sweat and breast milk in the implant group versus the control group, where no platinum was detected.

The study concluded that women with silicone breast implants had much higher levels of platinum than women without implants whereas saline implants did not contain any platinum. However, the methodology of the study has been questioned.

Bottom Line: Due to the small sample size, more research needs to be done to replicate these findings. However, it does raise some questions about platinum in breast milk. If mothers are concerned about platinum or silicone in their breast milk, Lactation Lab offer custom test kits to measure the levels of the components of their milk, along with recommendations for how to address any concerns.
