Mom Guilt Starts One Day Postpartum: The Rooming In Debate

Posted on July 2, 2018 July 2, 2018

After I gave birth to my first child, I was one of those moms who would read every childbirth, infant care, motherhood preparation book around. I was a typical neurotic over educated first time mom in America. I joined online communities of mothers having babies the same month as I was to and it was during the various discussions that once in a while a controversial topic would crop up. There were many: To circumcise or Not. To Breastfeed or Not and how long is too long? To succumb to in utero genetic defect testing or Not. It never ceased to amaze me how passionate women could be. Yes the issues were complex and multidimensional, but Geez Louise!

Seemingly nice and sensible women would get all crazed and judgmental when they’d discover that some in their comfortable circle were choosing a path different from their own. Women would label others, call names, banish and shame folks out from the communities; some would self-exile themselves or break out and form other boards. Imagine, all this stress from a bunch of women who never ever met each other most times!! Things would seriously get heated and passionate many times. It’s interesting because though that was nearly 8 years ago, I have seen and heard of similar instances since then among the dozens, might I say hundreds of similar online communities that have emerged since those days. Besides the occasional melo- and sometimes over-dramatic rift every now and again, those communities were the best places to get educated, share resources and knowledge and go through the overall experience with others in their same shoes.

Anyway, at some point, the topic of “rooming in” cropped up.

rooming-in /room·ing-in/ (rldbomacm´ing-in″) the practice of keeping a newborn infant in a crib near the mother’s bed instead of in a nursery during the hospital stay.dorland()

On one side of the argument was that right after birth, an infant needed to have constant access to his/her mother to encourage bonding and ease the baby’s assimilation into the outside world. The advocates for rooming in were usually the same ones who would admonish a mother for even thinking about allowing a newborn to be nursed by formula or even breastmilk through a bottle. To the women in the “au naturale” corner, I will call it, the mom had to be in a coma for it to be okay for the baby to receive nourishment through a latex nipple. So naturally, according to the moms in this corner, it would not even make sense to have the child stay in the nursery. You had to be there in an instant to hear her stirring from hunger so you could pick her up and immediately stick a breast in its mouth. No matter if you are struggling to produce milk, that your milk hadn’t come in yet or you were suffering from extreme fatigue and other effects of having had a c-section for example. They’d point to articles like this one from the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health sclaiming that rooming in mothers had higher instances of maternal attachment to her child

On the other side of the argument were those who felt that a mother needed to use all the luxury and comfort of having a 10+ nursing and hospital staff at her beck and call to take care of her and her baby. These “Posh moms” as they were sometimes mockingly referred to, did not see the rush to have 24/7 access to the baby when they could be using the 2-5 days postpartum in the hospital stay to rest up, heal and get prepared for life after the hospital. They’d have thousands of hours of uninterrupted sleep to expect in the coming months ahead and those initial days post partum were the ABSOLUTE best time to get some much needed mom time. Take advantage of the support as not everyone could afford a baby nurse or nanny at home.

I admit for my first child, I was wholly in the Au Naturale corner. I planned on breastfeeding and did not want baby to spend too much any extra time. When he wasn’t sleeping on my chest, baby was laying in the bassinet and if he but let out a wimper I would have my nose pressed against his bassinet looking for signs of distress. A wet diaper? Hungry? Hot? Cold? Whatever.

I barely slept. I was on edge and anxious. I was recovering from surgery and dealing with all the discomfort and pain from that, but yet I had a new un-selfish role and I had to be ready and able to take care of my child. Whenever a nurse asked if I wanted him to stay in the nursery so I could get some consistent sleep, I always declined. My new role as a mom would be secondary to anything else.

Needless to say, 4 days later when I got home, it was more of the same in terms of lack of sleep. But it was okay. I was doing my job. I was/am a good mom.

Well my has my tune changed three kids, three hospitalizations and three c-sections later. For my second son, I was a less anxious mom because I knew what to expect. I knew no one was going to kidnap him in the nursery. I knew he would get excellent care, be bathed and monitored appropriately in the nursery so I was less at edge with him spending extended periods of time in the nursery. If the time did come when I’d let him hang out at the nursery so I could rest, towards the end of my nap, I would wake up a bit panicky missing him dearly. I’d buzz the heck out of the nursing call station for them to return him to me. But it was all good, because I let myself let go and sleep once in a while. I appreciated them more because I knew what awaited me when I would be discharged.

With my third and last child, boy had my tune turned 180 degrees. I FINALLY realized the importance of taking advantage of the enormous support the hospital staff gave. Imagine, there were 5-10 persons including a lactation consultant, a primary nurse, a vital signs nurse, a baby nurse, a pediatrician, doctors, neonatal physicians, a home care instructor and others all on staff answering my beck and call and making sure I was comfortable and taking a load off.

Boy was I a nut to refuse all that help before! In short, the thing is there is such a thing as “balance.” A new mom can bond with her baby and even do some kangaroo care. She could nurse exclusively, if she wanted. And she could have the baby spend the night in the nursery. All she has to do is buzz when the baby is hungry and they’d happily return your screaming and wailing baby back to you.

It is not a condemnation or commentary on a mother’s value and worth as a mother, on her commitment to raise her child from birth to not be within arm’s reach of her baby that soon all the time. Now I think it is shameful for those who insist on judging others and condemning those who do not agree or make the same choices.

It is a personal choice and a mom’s choice should be respected either way. But without the judgmental neurotic condemning mother, how fun would those mom online communities be? ha

Child Surrogacy Abuse in Mexico Is Becoming a Big Problem

Posted on June 3, 2018 June 3, 2018

A woman in Florida was sentenced to seven years in prison for the forced labor of a Mexican woman she hired as a pregnancy surrogate.

Esthela Clark also faces deportation to Mexico after serving the sentence she received Thursday in federal court in Jacksonville. She is a legal permanent resident.

Clark pleaded guilty last year. Federal prosecutors say she traveled to Guadalajara, Mexico where she met the victim in 2012, promising her thousands of dollars once a baby was born.

The woman was smuggled into the United States, and after she arrived in Jacksonville, Clark repeatedly tried to inseminate her with sperm retrieved from her boyfriend’s condoms with a syringe.

Prosecutors say when that method failed, Clark forced the woman to have unprotected sex with strangers. She never became pregnant.

Drake/Pusha T Rap Beef: Would a Guy Denying His Son Do This? (PHOTO)

Posted on May 30, 2018 May 30, 2018

There is an innocent infant at the center of the latest rap battle between Drake and Kanye West GOOD label protege Pusha T.

If you care for the origins, you can find a timeline here.

The latest came from Pusha T who released a diss track asserting among many other things, like digs at Drake being abandoned by his own dad at age 5 and taunting death on a close friend and confidante of Drake’s who is suffering from the effects of advanced multiple Sclerosis, that Drake doesn’t acknowledge his own son.

But the fact is the fact the baby was conceived as a result of an 8-year on-again-off-again relationship with former French porn star turned surreal art painter named Sophie Brussaux, Drake has since conceded paternity. (Thanks to a Paternity Test)

Pusha T, the 41-year old rapper whose real name is Terrence LeVarr Thornton, takes shot at the couple’s baby on his diss track:

“Adonis is your son

And he deserves more than an Adidas press run, that’s real

Love that baby, respect that girl

Forget she’s a porn star, let her be your world, yuugh.”

The diss track is titled “The Story of Adidon” and apparently is in reference to an Adidas shoe line that will be named after Drake’s son, Adonis, and according to reports, will feature the young boy in the marketing campaign.

But as we blogged last October, Drake took his fans on a snap chat tour of his new home that included stops at the baby’s Hermès -themes baby nursery.

The family vacationed in Dubai and Brussaux has commented about how her son is living “the good life” at such a young age.

So the baby which was born on October 24, 2017, ironically on Drake’s birthday,  isn’t really being denied but perhaps kept in private for now.

There is a difference.

And for Wayback Wednesday purposes, below is a Snippet of our last October post:

Although Toronto rapper Drake denied that a   fling with model and former porn star Sophie Brussaux resulted in a pregnancy, a paternity test later, and there are reports out that he has set up a neutral Hermes-themed infant nursery and playroom in the multi-million dollar mansion he has been building in his home town.

Over the weekend, October’s Very Own took his followers on an MTV Cribs like tour of the digs. What caught people’s eye were the stops along the way that featured a pretty swanky gender neutral playroom.

15 Celeb Moms Celebrating Mother’s Day First Time

Posted on May 14, 2018 May 14, 2018

There were a lot of celebrity births over the past year which means yesterday, plenty of celebrity women we’ve “bumpwatched” and became moms for the first time ever were able to celebrate their first Mother’s Day.

One trend we noticed among this latest crop of first time moms: either they’ve concealed their babies from the spotlight, and laid low since becoming a mom or they’ve been all in, giving their babies their own Instagram or making them the star of the parents social media feed. No in between. All In or Nothing. Whatever floats their boat, we’re sure each had a great time yesterday celebrating Mom’s Day for the first time since their babies were born. Here is a run down:

International human rights attorney Amal Clooney and husband George Clooney are very private people, yet the arrival of their first set of children, twins —a boy named Alexander and girl named Ella— was big news  yet, the Clooneys have yet to talk about them in the public other than George revealing their first words were  “Mamma!”

Tennis legand Serena Williams and her husband Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian welcomed their daughter Alexis Olympia last September and now the duo are stars of an HBO docu series about her arrival.

Khloe Kardashian was one of three of the Kardashian-Jenner women who welcomed a baby this year. Her sister Kylie Jenner had her first baby while Kim Kardashian welcomed her third child via surrogate. She had managed to stay out of  spotlight since giving birth to True (with her estranged boyfriend NBA Cleveland Cavaliers star Tristan Thompson) in April 2017.

Four-time Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross and and her two-time Super Bowl champ hubby Aaron Ross welcomed their baby boy, Aaron Ross II in August.

The youngest of the Jenner-Kardashian clan, Kylie Jenner  welcomed her daughter Stormi with boyfriend Travis Scott on February 1 and she did an excellent job keeping the entire pregnancy under wraps.

It was last Mother’s Day 2017 that Kevin Hart announced that his wife, Eniko Hart, was expecting their first child. Their son Kenzo Kash made his grand debut in November and every since he’s been one of the happiest babies around!

Bring It On star Kirsten Dunst also did a great job covering up the majority of her pregnancy and only revealed it when she was well into her third trimester while posing for an ad campaign. She welcomed a baby boy this month with fiancé Jesse Plemons and they too have yet to even discuss baby since he arrived.

On May 2, Jordin Sparks and her husband, model Dana Isaiah Thomas welcomed their first child together,  son Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr.  and the American Idol alum stunned everyone when she was spotted walking the red carpet just three days later. Wow!

Julia Stiles and her husband Preston J. Cook welcomed their son Strummer Newcomb Cook on Oct. 20, 2017. The Silver Linings Playbook star was recently “mommy shamed” for the say she carried her baby in a carrier but clapped back like a champ.

POWER star Naturi Naughton welcomed her daughter, Zuri in July 2017 and she too has been great about keeping her little one out of the public eye but we’re sure she is a looker like her mom.

The Southern Charm star Cameran Eubanks  had her daughter Palmer on Nov. 11, 2017. After celebrating with a hilarious shower, Eubanks has since shared lots about mommyhood on her Insta!

The Hills Babyboom

Lauren Conrad led the little baby boom of alums of the MTV show The Hills when she welcomed her first child, son  Liam, on July 5 with her hubbie William Tell. Since becoming a mom, she too has laid low but pops up once in a while to show off her mom power!

HEIDI PRATT

Heidi Pratt who was Conrad’s nemesis on the show and her husband Spencer Pratt also welcomed a baby boy named Guinner on October 12017 but unlike the others, they’re pretty out and open about sharing photos of him in social media.

Finally, Whitney Port had her first child Sonny with husband Tim Rosenman in July 2017 and was very transparent about the trials of pregnancy on her YouTube channel but looks to believe it was all worth it.

Shamari DeVoe

Former 90s bandmember and wife to New Edition singer Ronnie DeVoe, singer Shamari Stone DeVo  welcomed boy twins, Ronnie III and Roman last October. The boys are so popular they even have their own top social media Instagram account with tons of followers.

Whoa!Jordin Sparks Rocked Red Carpet For Her New Movie Days After Giving Birth!

Posted on May 9, 2018 May 9, 2018

We know that Kate Middleton emergeged the same day as giving birth looking like a bed of fresh roses.

Amazing but not normal, well at least nowhere near the average experience of most women!

We know that celebs are subject to unrealistic  pressure  to bounce back and quickly re-emerge into the public eye after having a baby.

We don’t know if Jordin Sparks was thinking of any of that when she decided to hit the red carpet last Saturday at the TCL Chinese Theater in Hollywood on May 5th., a mere days after giving birth to her first child, son Dana Isaiah, Jr.

Then we figured out the new mom was probably under contract to appear at the premiere of her upcoming movie Show Dogs where she voices the role of the dog Daisy in the movie!

She probably jetted right back home or nurse and snuggle with her gorgeous baby boy right after!

Well one thing This appearance did confirm for the celeb stalkers: she did not deliver her son via c-section because those deliveries usually require the mom to be hold up on a bed, recovering from major surgery and probably having a catheter and still stapled bikini line incision for at least three days before being sent home.

The American Idol alum also looked super cute in a  floral Saloni dress, Schutz shoes, and Melinda Maria jewelry.

The baby boy was born May 2 at 9:04 p.m. PT at the Natural Birth Center & Women’s Wellness in L.A. DJ weighed 8 lbs. 4.5 oz. and measured 21.5 inches, People reports.

Sparks describes the birthing process as “miraculously beautiful,” saying, “Dana caught him with my midwife, Simona, and when he handed him to me, I was absolutely overwhelmed with joy. He was and is everything we imagined.” Days after becoming a mother, Sparks told People, “I’m feeling pretty good! I am so grateful for my husband and amazing team at the Natural Birthing Center. I don’t think I would be feeling this great without them!” Sparks adds she “already” loves nurturing her son, gushing, “The joy, laughter, scrapes and bruises…I can’t wait for it all!”

Naturpedic

Since your baby will be spending most of her time (up to 18 hours a day) in her crib, it is important to get the right mattress and not go cheap. Also, the manufacturing process for some eco-friendly crib mattresses tends to produce fewer carbon emissions. The Naturepedic No-Compromise Organic Cotton Classic 150 crib mattress shown here has a “U.S.-grown organic cotton filling” and a polyethylene plastic waterproof surface that, the manufacturer says, is free of vinyl/ PVC, phthalates, lead, or antimicrobial biocides. It sells for $260. The outer cover of this mattress might limit the exposure to toxins.

I’ve boasted plenty about this online learning platform for kids. I purchased a subscription for my daughter when she was 4 and she followed the curriculum through the end. Today, she is a top reader, tests in the 99% for reading and gets all As in school. I credit her early start from this program which is having a sale through Cyber Monday of 63% off its annual fee. I love Wild Dill because it combines commerce with conscious shopping. They source their goods direct from the creators in Africa, South America, Israel and all over the world and sell them online for a fair share of the profit which is different from what a lot of companies do: they steal the concept, create duplicates in China made of sub par material and market them as authentic.

Nested Bean

The latest on our radar is a swaddle blanket that takes the guess work out of swaddling a new born and adds technology of “touch” so baby can feel even more secure when sleep. 3 Years After Giving Birth, ‘The Walking Dead’s’ Alanna Masterson’s Still Fighting Body Shamers

Posted on April 9, 2018 April 9, 2018

The Walking Dead‘s Alanna Masterson has had to fight off body shaming trolls before when viewers mocked her pregnancy weight gain back in 2015 when she was expecting her first child.

We’re going on two years later and she is still fending off haters. The briefly left Instagram last Spring when she gave up battling with those who thought she was gaining weight. Producers hid her then-growing baby bump with chairs, props and her character, Tara, went on a serious long “supply run” and as missing for most of the final part of the sixth series and the beginning of the seventh season  during her maternity leave.

Masterson and her now 2-year old daughter Marlowe who she welcomed with her boyfriend Brick Stowell back in November 2015.

Masterson, who is the youngest sibling of actor big brothers including That 70s Show and The Ranch star Danny Masterson, returned to social media and about a week ago, left a very personal and poignant response to the haters:

“Why do people feel the need to pick on me because of how I look? Why do people keep calling me “fat” or “ugly”? I don’t understand.” she captioned a photo of herself laying on her side on a pillow facing the camera . “How much time do you have on your hands? Look around you. Look at what’s happening on our planet. Please, focus your energy on something POSITIVE. Instead of trolling people on social media, why not do something to HELP others. Would you ever say those things to a stranger? Face to face? Probably not.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BhACaVjguLl/

She continued:

“We have to stop letting our kids, peers, and elders get away with bullying. Stand up to it. Say something. Be the example. Teach EMPATHY. THIS is why kids harm themselves. THIS is why kids have low self esteem. THIS is why kids pick themselves apart in the mirror. STOP. My body is my body. I was born this way. I have stretch marks, lumps, bumps, cellulite and everything else in between. It’s ok. I am ok with it. I’m not skinny. I’m not fat. I’m not ugly. I’m not pretty. I’m just ME. And I make an effort to better myself and my body everyday. My family is healthy. I’m healthy. I’m extremely fortunate to be alive and breathing. So please, to any kid out there that feels uncomfortable in their own skin – don’t. You were created exactly how you were supposed to be. And I love you. ❤”

Well said. Recently, another co-star, Steven Ogg, unleashed on celeb trolls in a post-mortem interview following his character’s exit from the show this week, by way of the merciless Nagan.

That’s why Alanna’s post was so beautiful, because fuck off. Why are you harassing people?” Ogg told HuffPo. “Go fucking do something productive with your life.”

For the record, we love her body as is and think Alanna is GORGE!

Always bringing a bit of Marlowe with me. ❤

NHL’s Erik Karlsson and Wife Lose Son One Month Before Due

Posted on March 24, 2018 September 18, 2020

The NHL is showing their support and offering their condolences to Ottawa Senators captain Erik Karlsson, 27 and his new wife since last August 2017 Melinda Currey.

Karlsson was absent from Tuesday nights game against the Florida Panthers. Shortly after the game, the team released a statement breaking the tragic news that Erik’s unborn son had died.

The NHL released a press release:

“The collective thoughts and prayers of the Ottawa Senators organization, the city of Ottawa and entire hockey community rest with Erik and Melinda Karlsson following the loss of their son. We ask that you respect the family’s wishes for privacy during the grieving process.”

Karlsson asked for privacy after sharing his grief on his Instagram account:

At this extremely difficult time it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel but we know one day we’ll get there. We would like to thank everyone for the love and support we have received and also for respecting our privacy and the process we need to go through now. We feel very lucky to be Axels parents. Even though he was stillborn, we know we will hold him again one day under different circumstances and the joy he gave us will be with us forever.

E! Dissects Celebrity Parenting Trends in Recent History

Posted on March 21, 2018 March 21, 2018

Having children is one of life’s great equalizers. Famous parents may be able to spend more on decorating the nursery, but at the end of the day Beyoncé just wants what’s best for her babies, and the Kardashians hope their kids are happy and healthy. And don’t all moms and dads want the same thing for their little ones?

The difference here is that when someone like Chrissy Teigen claps back at a mommy-shamer, it makes national news. And when Khloe Kardashian says she plans to eat her placenta, just like Kim Kardashian did, other moms-to-be may be intrigued enough to look into the encapsulation process for themselves.

Of course in all cases it’s important for people to do their own research and consult with their personal doctors about what’s best for them and their children. But we couldn’t help but be curious about a lot of these things we hear celebrities talking about these days, so we checked with medical and parenting experts to get the low-down on the usefulness of some of these parenting trends.

Placenta Pills Taking

Meanwhile, this information is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice. But let’s get right down to it and start with eating placenta…

Kim did it, Kourtney Kardashian did it and Khloe says she’s going to do it, but human placentophagy definitely didn’t start with the Kards. Nikki Reed, Katherine Heigl, January Jones, Alicia Silverstone, Holly Madison and Padma Lakshmi all had their placentas encapsulated and turned into pills to take after giving birth, too, while Kim Zolciak-Biermann and Gaby Hoffman say they ingested theirs in smoothie form—and they all had positive things to say about their experiences.

All the way back in 2013, before delivering daughter Rainbow, Madison wrote on her blog, “I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!”

“All I’ve been doing is breastfeeding and eating chocolate chip cookies—and eating placenta, which helps,” Hoffman told E! News in 2015 about how she was taking care of herself after welcoming her daughter Rosemary.

Mayim Bialik, who in addition to playing a neuroscientist on TV is also one in real life, as well as a placenta-consuming mother herself, explained the thought process behind this practice in a 2012 blog post for Kveller, writing, “Human beings are the only mammals that have chosen to not routinely ingest their placenta, which is consumed by every other mammal for its protein and iron-rich properties that are critical in helping the mother’s body recuperate after giving birth.”

According to Dr. Daniel Benyshek, a professor of medical anthropology at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, there’s not enough research yet to back these positive claims. “There’s a great deal of anecdotal evidence,” he tells E! News. “[But] on the scientific side, there’s very little evidence at all to suggest that there are the sorts of objective measurable benefits when compared to a placebo that some of the proponents claimed.”

There has been at least one documented case of a baby who contracted a serious bacterial infection while the mother was taking placenta pills, prompting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to issue a warning last year about the practice.

The child was treated and discharged, but the incident did raise a red flag for some in the medical community. This past August, the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology published a review with its take on the trend.

“If there were no harm in consuming placental tissue, we would argue that it doesn’t matter [if a mom eats placenta pills],” Dr. Alex Farr, a gynecologist and one of the authors of the review, explained to E! News. “But the problem is that with placenta consumption, there is a possible harm—mainly the harm of transmitting infectious diseases from the mother to the baby. This is why we are straightforward arguing and voting against placental consumption.”

Experts say that if moms do plan to eat their placenta, they should discuss it with their doctor and choose an encapsulation company that practices proper food safety protocols for handling, storing and preparing the material.

Or, another option is to plant the placenta beneath a tree like Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves. In 2008, the actor talked about burying son Levi‘s placenta in an orchard beneath a giant tree, telling Sanjay Gupta on CNN’s House Call, “It’s going to bear some wonderful fruit!”

Placenta trees haven’t caught on the way placenta pills have, but according to Dr. Stacy Zamudio, a senior scientist and Hackensack Universal Medical Center’s Director of Research, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, burial of the placenta is actually “the most common practice” and “goes back to medieval times.”

“The idea [is] that you bury the placenta on your property near your house, and you plant a tree in that place that will carry the attributes that you want your child to have,” she tells E! News exclusively. “Those cultural beliefs across western Europe were very very widespread right up until the enlightenment era.”

But still, even if you’re just planting a placenta, make sure to act in compliance with any federal and local regulations for the disposal of human material.

Cord Blood Banking

Audrina Patridge, Nick Carter, Mario Lopez, and Bill and Giuliana Rancic have all spoken out in favor of (or in official partnership with) private cord-blood banks. Cord blood is pretty much what it sounds like—blood taken from the baby’s umbilical cord—and it contains potentially life-saving stem cells that can be banked for future use.

“CBR [Cord Bank Registry] came highly recommended to us, both by Giuliana’s sister and our OB/GYN, but we also did our own homework and visited the lab right before Edward Duke was born. We even saw where his cord blood stem cells would be stored!” the Rancics explained their decision on People.com in 2012.

When stored in a private cord-blood bank, the family pays an initial fee (typically somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000) plus an annual storage fee (ranging from $100 to $175) so that they can access their child’s stem cells at any time. With the public system, a baby’s cord blood is donated (at no charge to the parents) and becomes available to anyone who is a match and needs it.

Last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics released an updated policy statementhighlighting the option of cord blood banking. Dr. William T. Shearer, the lead author of the policy and a Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology and Immunology at Baylor College of Medicine, tells E! News “it’s a matter of personal choice” what parents do with a child’s cord blood.

Cord blood stored in private banks has “a very restricted use,” says Dr. Shearer. “The chances that the cord blood is going to be used to save someone’s life is far greater with the public system.” “Now there is a chance,” he notes, “that new developments could happen in science and medicine in which the technique is discovered provided we could do more than the cord blood than is being done currently.”

Breastfeeding

Danica McKellar breastfed her son until he was 2 1/2, Mayim Bialik weaned her son at age 4, and Alanis Morissette said she would breastfeed “until my son is finished.” Like these moms, Kourtney Kardashian was criticized for breastfeeding son Mason Disick for too long, but on the flip side, Adele got flak for not breastfeeding son Angelo for long enough.

In this case, there’s no right or wrong amount of time—and to breastfeed at all or not is an entirely personal decision. “It’s what works for each mother,” Dr. Robin Berman, a psychiatrist and author of Permission to Parent: How to Raise Your Child With Love and Limits, tells E! News. “If women choose to breastfeed, that’s wonderful. If they make the choice not to breastfeed and to use formula, that’s wonderful, too.”

Attachment Parenting

Pink, Alicia Silverstone and Bialik have all spoken out in favor of attachment parenting, a child-rearing philosophy that promotes closeness through near constant touch.

Angelina Jolie, Milla Jovovich, Tori Spelling and Tia Mowry have practiced some form of co-sleeping, which is a key tenet of attachment parenting, and countless celebs including Chris HemsworthandElsa Pataky, Jessica Alba, Gwen Stefani, Channing Tatum, Jennifer Garner, Ryan Reynolds and Gisele Bündchen have been spotted babywearing (the official term for strapping the baby to your chest—remember when Reynolds was criticized for not properly securing his daughter in the carrier?), which can also be considered a form of an attachment parenting.

The verdict? “If it works for you, great. It doesn’t work for everybody,” Dr. Sonya Rasmisnky, a psychiatrist specializing women’s mental health and reproductive psychiatry, tells E! News about the overall concept of attachment parenting.

“When I think about attachment parenting, I think of an insistence on particular care practices: Baby-wearing, co-sleeping, that kind of thing,” she says. “But attachment is a much larger thing…Attachment is having a responsive parent who’s attuned to you and to your needs, and that that can take multiple forms… I don’t think it’s necessary to babywear and to co-sleep in order to be attached to your child.”

Mom-Shaming Resistance

More and more, many famous moms—and dads—aren’t afraid to clap back: Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Jada Pinkett Smith, Julia Stiles, Kristin Cavallari, Hilary Duff and Snookiamong others—have all shut down mom-shamers, and David Beckham, John Legend and, as mentioned, Ryan Reynolds have all had opportunities to defend themselves from the dad police.

Celebrity parents definitely aren’t the only ones dealing with this, either.

Dr. Berman says the shaming culture “has really gotten out of control,” explaining, “It’s like a bubble—somebody’s gotta pop it and deflate it and realize that they’re parenting from their ego and not from their soul. Because when you’re shaming other people and you’re judging other people, you can’t be loving them at the same time.”

Parent shaming is obviously prevalent online, but there are friendly, supportive corners of the web, too. As Dr. Rasminsky puts it, “[T]here are lot of downsides to the internet, but one of the upsides is that you can find pretty much any kind of community there.”

“I guess I would say if you’re feeling shamed, go find some other moms to hang out with who are going to be more supportive, because they exist,” she adds. “I think finding your people is one of the tasks of early parenting because it’s a whole new world—so that’s making friends who are moms who share your view of parenting and of what’s important, that’s possible to do and i think it’s important to do and it’s sustaining, and they’re out there.”

Ultimately, we all need to remember “there is no exact science to parenting,” says Dr. Berman. “I am a mother of three, I am a psychiatrist, I am a parenting book author—there is no one way to parent. There is not a perfect formula, and if we all look at each other with a lot more love and support and less shame, we would all raise happier kids.”

So I See Chrissy Teigen is Following Our Pregnancy Advice

Posted on January 21, 2018 January 21, 2018

We consistently share a blog post about three things to never share with others about your baby in the oven until it is born, and I recently saw an interview with Chrissy Teigen sharing that she has adopted two of our core pieces of advice! (Well she didn’t give us credit for the advice, but that is besides the point! ha!)

During an interview with E! News during a media tour to discuss her Lip Sync Battle series the Twitter maven gave some insights on her other latest project: a brand new baby with husband John Legend.

Last go round, the model openly announced that she selected her baby’s gender because she felt her husband deserved a baby girl and she got lambasted for it in by the public in social media, mainly. This time, John asked her to keep it mum about the baby’s sex which they knew because they conceived it using in vitro fertilization.

“We had them on ice,” Chrissy joked. “So we know. We knew when we put it in, but John was like, ‘Make sure you don’t say it. Let’s have one thing for us,’ and of course I’m probably going to end up saying it, but I’m just going to do this favor to him for as long as I can.”

Good advice!

She also opened up about getting to pick this baby’s name given that John got to select Luna’s name.

“Names are tough. What I learned was, never share your ideas,” she explained. “If you have a name idea, somebody is going to be like ‘No, I knew a person by that name in high school, and they were gross.’ That always happens.”

Yes, chile! This was also among our suggested no-no’s before baby is born!

The other is that you’re pregnant. Read why HERE!
