Decade in Review: 10 Celeb Parenting Trends That Are Now Outdated

Having covered celebrity pregnancy, parenting and the “bump watch” for over a decade, I pride myself in being an institutional memory of the trends in this space.

As we close out on another decade, I’ve identified 10 trends that have come and gone from the past decade, including old ones that have faded out of style over time and new ones spearheaded by the recent popularity and usage of social media.

Let’s start with the trends that are

Outdated and going bye bye:

10. Million Dollar Deals for First Baby Photos

In 2007, Julia Roberts reportedly was the first celebrity to demand a six figure payday ($250,000) from PEOPLE magazine to get the rights to publish the first photos of her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel. OK magazine got a steal and paid merely a little over a half a million for pics of Gwen Stefanie’s 2 week old son, Kingston. OK Magazine lost their $2 million dollar bid for Britney Spear and Kevin Federline’s first baby pic to People magazine. Nicole Richie reportedly received $1M for her photo of son, Max and Christina Aguilera for her son.

With magazines, along with newspapers, losing tons of revenue as people start to rely on digital forms of media for news and information, it no longer made business sense to pay these astronomical amounts of money.

Also, with the advent of social media and more conscious celeb couples publishing their babies on Instagram for free, the less famous personalities who used to shop for first photo deals found there was no longer a market for them.

9. Pregnant Nude Covers

After Demi Moore posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991, it became a thing for stars to do the same.  Since then, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Nia Long and many more graced covers in the buff while expecting.

Soon, it became more of a quick and easy way to get publicity and attention, and eventually the public interest in them waned.

The last big photo issue was of Alanis Morissette in 2016. She did an undercover water shoot but the naked baby bump photo thing is more or less passe and not a public rosy stunt many will do.

8. The Celebrity Bounce Back

Around the same time that gossip magazines started to cover celebrity parents, we saw a lot of photos about the “bounce back”. It was as if it was a competition to see who could pop up slim and trim months or even weeks after baby.

It was ridiculous for several reasons: 1) a lot of the covers were photoshopped; 2) some of the celebs either genetically were predisposed to lose weight fast or underwent surgical procedures to quickly trim down after baby; 3) it set up a dangerous standard given that a lot of celebs have private chefs and trainers to help them lose weight fast; and 4) it sent a damaging message to women who should be concerned with safely healing from delivery and focusing on nursing and connecting with their newborns.

In any event, those magazine covers are not as common as before. In fact, a bunch of celebrity women like Chrissy Teigen, Blake Livey, Mila Kunis and others have spoken out about the ridiculous expectations on them to return to their pre-pregnancy form after baby.

The industry has gotten the message and do not sensationalize the bounce back as much as before.

7. Sponsored Baby Showers

Once upon a time, celebrities were approached by companies and brand representatives to host a baby shower for them in exchange for promotion of their products. The companies knew there were tons of promotions that came with the exposure.

Amazon.com sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower in 2018. Although the trend is dying out, over the past decade, Danielle Jonas and her husband Kevin celebrated a baby shower thrown by Fit Pregnancy magazine.

Also, Burt’s Bees was among the sponsors of Kourtney Kardashian’baby shower when she was pregnant with daughter Penelope. Similarly, Le Bebe CoCo  was among Kristin Cavallari‘s baby shower sponsors. Target hosted Beverley Mitchell’s baby shower. Several liquor companies provided the libations for cocktails served up at Love and Hip Hop’s  Yandy Smith‘s baby shower.

Jaime King enjoyed some fab brand goodies at her shower.  Ecoya‘s Sweet Pea & Jasmine home fragrance collection, a pink Quinny Buzz Special Edition stroller, a mamaRoo baby swing, a pink Hoppop Bath tub, a pink Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket, a Timi and Leslie diaper bag and a 5 ft. custom-made giraffe by Melissa and Doug all contributed to Victoria Beckham‘s baby shower.

Finally, Belly Bandit sponsored Jewel’s baby shower.

While this trend continues, audiences do not respond as favorable to them any longer and the comment section on sponsored baby showers are sometimes filled with negative commentary from fans who want less rich new parents to be showered with the gifts.

SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN

6. Hiding Children’s Face in Social Media

We famously were contacted by Stella McCartney’s reps over 10 years ago to remove paparazzi photos of her traveling with her children in the street posted on the blog. A few years later, Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard launched a campaign in 2014 to get a California state law passed to protect children of celebs from paparazzi. Others have done the same.

Eva Mendes and Kerry Washington do not show their kids in public or social media at all.

In the social media era, a few refuse to feature their children in social media or they hide their faces when they do: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, brit star Rochelle Humes, Kylie Jenner  and Jenna Dewan all have done that in the past or continue to.

5. Celebrity Kids Instagram Accounts

On the flip side, several less famous stars realize the tremendous money making and marketing opportunities in giving their children their own account and branding their name and fame from birth.

It’s a pretty recent phenomenon, but starting with , DJ Khaled who launched an Instagram account  for his son Asadh in 2016 when Baby Khaled was just one month old, many celebs have created accounts for their kids as well.

Little  Asadh now has 1.8M followers, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade‘s 1 year old daughter Kaavia James boasts 1M followers and Michael Phelps’ 3-year old son Boomer Phelps  now has 665K followers of his Instagram page.

I think the youngest baby to get an Insta was Cali Clay Shephard, daughter of model Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard whose account was opened at just 16 days old.

This is a trend that is not getting old but is growing as more realize the revenue generating options that open up with having a massive engaged following.

4.  Hiding Pregnancy to Late Trimester

From my memory in covering this topic, I think that Kylie Jenner, Anna Kournokova and a few others did the best job at hiding their pregnancies for all 9 months. It’s pretty hard to hide from the paparazzi and shield their bump during events, filming and promoting a project.

But in 2011, Evangeline Lilly managed to almost completely disguise her entire pregnancy until papps found her in Hawaii while almost done gestating her first child. Jennifer Lopez and Adele managed to hide their respective pregnancies for over 5 months.

Given how common miscarriage is, a lot of women, whether a celebrity or not, wait until the latest time possible when they feel comfortable that they will be able to carry their baby to term to announce baby news.

Hiding an early pregnancy while building a career in front of the public is not easy to do as Cardi B learned but it can be done and the more private or celebs are learning from others how to do it.

3. Launch New Career/Re invigorate Career

Also during the height of the interest in celeb baby bumps, a lot of stars who were formerly very popular but whose fame had waned were able to reinvigorate their respective careers after having a baby.

For example, Kim Karadashian West once lamented that she saw a spike in paparazzi photos whenever she is expecting.

About 10 years ago, Mommyish published a gallery of celebrities who became more famous after becoming pregnant or becoming a mom.

It is not clear is the general public is as enamored with celebrity pregnancy as it once was before so a baby may not be the career boost as it was in the past.

2. Launch a Maternity or Parenting Related Brand

Tia and Tamera Mowry famously launched a breastfeeding brand called Milky after becoming parents for the first time.  Others like Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum launched maternity lines or added children clothing to their existing lines as with Stella McCartney and The Kardashians after they became a mom, respectively.

Instagram famous women shift their feeds and started featuring their babies and promoting parenting and motherhood related brands as part of their new post baby rebranding.

So at least in social media, a new baby can create opportunities.

1. Being Open and Honest about Miscarriage

Micarriage is a taboo among many families. It is unspoken and women who go through it suffer in silence or keep it a secret. It occurs more often than many would believe, yet women usually keep it a secret from family and friends. It certainly taints and colors one’s journey to motherhood, whether it happened in the early weeks or mid term. A woman will earnestly never be the same after suffering through one, especially she and her partner were planning for the baby they lost.

In recent years, a lot of celebrities have been open and transparent about having gone through a miscarriage.

And a lot more are being open and transparent about losses they’ve had in the past.

From many of the stars of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mithcell to Michelle Obama to Beyonce and Carrie Underwood and Gabrielle Union, openly sharing about a miscarriage or pregnancy loss is the thing to do.

Because of their influence, platform and reach, it’s awesome that these women are sharing their stories to help comfort and empathy for those who have endured it or may be unknowing about how common it is.

In the coming decade, let’s hope the trend of being relatable and real continue and we can leave behind those trends that created stress and anxiety among their followers behind.

Beyonce on Taking a Motherhood-Driven Mental Health Year

Beyonce
gets raw and candid in an “Ask Me Anything” interview with members of her fandom Beyhive inside the January 2020 edition of Elle US, in a cover shoot directed by famed Queen & Slim director Melina Matsoukas (Insecure on HBO, Formation & We Found Love music videos among others)

Mrs. Carter talks about the nonstop bump watch speculation.

“Are you pregnant?’” is that question she says she hates hearing the most, adding, “Get off my ovaries!”

The songstress and director candidly spoke about having a difficult pregnancy with her twins, Rumi and Sir.

The troubled pregnancy led to a year long break from the music industry.

“After having a difficult pregnancy, I took a year to focus on my health,” the 22-time Grammy award winning singer-songstress and voice over actress opened up.

“I have researched information on homeopathic medicines,” adding, “I don’t just put any prescription in my body. My diet is important, and I use tools like acupuncture, meditation, visualization, and breathing exercises,”

The mom of three spoke about the importance of self-care in a society where, she says, women are expected to “tough it up”, ignore the symptoms and take care of everyone else before themselves.

The Queen Bey also  spoke about how motherhood has changed her and  opened up about experiencing miscarriages, how parenthood has changed her perspective on life and the importance of introspection, self-care and purpose.

She also spoke on the importance of self-care in a society where, she says, women are expected to “tough it up”, ignore the symptoms and take care of everyone else before themselves.

The Lion King star also talked about coming to love her curves, after experiencing fluctuating weight post baby making.

“If someone told me 15 years ago that my body would go through so many changes and fluctuations, and that I would feel more womanly and secure with my curves, I would not have believed them. But children and maturity have taught me to value myself beyond my physical appearance and really understand that I am more than enough no matter what stage I’m at in life.”

Good for you, mama!

“This new [Ivy Park] line is fun and lends itself to creativity, the ultimate power,” @beyonce told ELLE. “I focused on designing a unisex collection of footwear and apparel because I saw so many men in Ivy Park. The way they have embraced the brand is an unexpected gift. I appreciate the beauty of gender-neutral clothing and breaking the so-called fashion rules. I took a chance on myself when I bought my company back. We all have the confidence in us to take chances and bet on ourselves.” Link in bio for the full January 2020 cover story. #BeyoncexELLE ⁣ ⁣ ELLE January 2020: ⁣ Editor-in-Chief: @ninagarcia ⁣ Cover star: @beyonce⁣ Photographer: @msmelina ⁣ Stylist: #KarenLangley ⁣ Makeup: @sirjohn ⁣ Hair: @nealfarinah @nakiarachon ⁣ Production: Ben Bonnet @westyproductions

Hilaria Baldwin Confirms She Miscarried Her Baby 4 Months Along, 2nd Loss in a Year

Hilaria Baldwin lost her baby at 4 months gestation, the second miscarriage this year, the celebrity yoga instructor shared recently.

“We are very sad to share that today we learned that our baby passed away at 4 months,” Baldwin, who is spouse to actor Alec Baldwin, stated in a video post. “We also want you to know that even though we are not ok right now, we will be.”

In the video which also features her daughter, Carmen, hugging and kissing her mom on the cheek, Hilaria thanks her sweet girl for the love and empathy.

Just this past April before getting pregnant again, Hilaria opened up about having just experienced a miscarriage.

View this post on Instagram

We are very sad to share that today we learned that our baby passed away at 4 months. We also want you to know that even though we are not ok right now, we will be. We are so lucky with our 4 healthy babies—and we will never lose sight of this. I told Carmen and took this so I could send it to Alec. I guess this is a good way to share it with you too. I told her that this baby isn’t going to come after all…but we will try very hard to give her a little sister another time. I’m really devastated right now…I was not expecting this when I went to my scan today. I don’t know what else to say…I’m still in shock and don’t have this all quite clear. Please no paparazzi…that’s all I ask ❤️

A post shared by Hilaria Thomas Baldwin (@hilariabaldwin) on

“I have no shame or embarrassment with this experience,” Baldwin wrote in that Instagram post. “I want to be a part of the effort to normalize miscarriage and remove the stigma from it. There is so much secrecy during the first trimester.”

Baldwin has four children with actor Alec Baldwin: their daughter and three boys. She had shared a video in October of the couple revealing to their children that the new baby was a girl.

“I told [Carmen] that this baby isn’t going to come after all…but we will try very hard to give her a little sister another time,” Baldwin wrote.

US Olympic Gymnast Shawn Johnson Still Fits Her ‘O8 Leotard At 40 Weeks Preggers

US Olympic Gymnast Shawn Johnson took up her husband Andrew East‘s dare to try on her competition leotard from her 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China  when she won 4 medals…but while currently  40 weeks pregnant.

“… fits a little different these days ? @andrewdeast dared me too hahah 40 weeks preggers,” she captioned the photo of herself in the royal blue long sleeve leotard. “But no joke… this babes is already more rewarding than any medal was,” she added. “BABY! GET HERE ALREADY!”

Amazing!

This was the latest in a very open and transparent pregnancy which started with the pregnancy announcement that also revealed they had suffered miscarriage and loss.

“Two years ago we got pregnant for the first time and ended up losing that pregnancy. Exactly two years later we are anxiously awaiting the arrival of our rainbow baby and we couldn’t be more excited,” she captioned her post featuring the video.

They also have shared that the baby was due on October 23rd! Any day now! Safe labor and delivery vibes to the family!

Why Hilaria Baldwin Revealed her 5th Pregnancy at 6 Weeks Pregnant

Hilaria Baldwin is expecting her fifth child with her husband Alec Baldwin.

This time, the celebrity yoga instructor chose to share the news when she was barely one month along. Traditional wisdom and advice from doctors say moms-to-be should wait  until three months or until the baby’s heartbeat can be heard before announcing the news.

By that time, the risk of miscarriage false tremendously.

When you’ve had so many babies, 6 minutes pregnant = looking like 6 months pregnant,” the yoga instructor joked about her tiny protruding belly while announcing the pregnancy.

When one of her fans asked why she decided to reveal this news so early, Hilaria replied that after having a miscarriage in April, she did not want to wait to answer speculation from fans.

“People poke around and try to find out what is going on,” she said. “When you simply share what is happening, you take the story into your own hands and they tend to leave you alone more. Secrets are only interesting when they are secrets. Reports of my belly growing or my appearance changing spark rumors. That brings attention.”

She continued, “Me coming out and saying what is going on gets the news out there … then they move on to the next story. It’s been something I’ve learned over the past decade … this is one of the reasons I’m so active on social media. The news can take images for free from my page rather than paying a paparazzi to come follow me.”

She and Alec marreid in 2012 and started a family right away in 2013 with the birth of their oldest daughter, Carmen Gabriela, followed by son Rafael Thomas, another son Leonardo Angel Charles in 2016, and 1-year-old son Romeo Alejandro David, born last year.

Alec has a 23-year old daughter named Ireland from his first marriage to actress Kim Basinger.

In June, Hilaria told People, “Why not keep going? They’re my favorite things in the world so why not? I never expected to have a big family but since we signed on to it, at this point, why not? Why not keep going?”

There you go! Congrats and good luck!

VIRAL: ‘Stop Asking Women When are They Getting Pregnant’ Sign

An Instagram post by Toronto, Canada-based Event Planner Barbara Nkansah went viral and has been re-shared because it simply states: “Stop Asking Women When are They Getting Pregnant”.

In it, the Ghanaian-Canadian shares the hurt of being newly married and having to endure probing questions and insensitive remarks from well-meaning family and friends.

“I remember being newly married and the first thing people started doing instead of greeting me was look right at my belly,” she shared. “Then when they noticed I was not pregnant, the look of confusion following ‘oh you’re not pregnant yet?’ would be their conversation starter.

“I will never forget when just after 3 months of marriage church service ended and a member in the church who saw me yelled at the top of her lungs in front of everyone saying ‘BARBARA YOU’RE STILL NOT PREGNANT YET. WHEN WILL YOU GET PREGNANT? YOU’RE TAKING TOO LONG.'”

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs_Fy2Jg1K5/

The statistics are jarring.

One in 8 couples have a hard time getting pregnant and at least 1 in 4 will experience a pregnancy loss.

People who are trying to conceive are fed up and would like you to stop asking them when they are going to have children or even worse, “why don’t they have children.”

In the celebrity world, Gabrielle Union and Chrissy Teigen recalled being asked this question constantly because they were with their spouses for several years without producing children and people just couldn’t stop asking a very personal, imposing and insensitive question.

Little did they know that each couple were indeed trying but failing at it.

Please stop asking women (AND MEN!) when they are having kids or, even worse, why they don’t have children. ⁣

I remember the words of Assistant Professor Rondrea Danielle from Bethune-Cookman College on Facebook last year:

“Getting pregnant is hard.

Sustaining pregnancy is hard.

Giving birth is hard.

Raising a baby is hard.

So asking folks why they don’t have kids is both inconsiderate and insensitive (it also isn’t your business), and it needs to stop now.

We have no idea how much women go through to get pregnant and then bring a baby into the world.”

Conduct a Google Search and you’ll encounter dozens of articles from women and lifestyle and advice sites about this very topic and also demanding that they not be asked the question when they gain weight.

Phew!

Expecting Teddi Mellencamp and RHOB Castmates Take NYFW

real housewives of Beverly hills cast runway

real housewives of Beverly hills cast runway

Congratulations to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave woh announced last week that she is expecting her third child then took to the runway only 4 days later to walk in her co star Kyle Richards New York Fashion Week for her new fashion label and collaboration, Kyle & Shahida, co-designed by Shahida Clayton.

During the show, cast mates walked along seasoned models including former model Lisa Rinna,  Erika Jayne, Dorit Kemsley, and Denise Richards.

Rinna, Mellencamp Arroyave and Richards herself walked, wearing daring bodysuits under bright floral floral robes. Girardi walked in a colorful tunic which is signature to her style under red silk wide leg pants while Kemsley rocked red pans wore red pants with a black tube top under a black blazer, and accented with Femmes Sans Peur heels.

A few days after the show Mellencamp Arroyave  had to defend herself against haters who slammed her walk during the runway show.

“Now, I am no model — I can barely walk down the street properly — but I walked out there feeling good and excite to support my friend,” the 4-time mom-to-be captioned an Instagram post on Thursday. “That quickly shifted when I was hit with the barrage of memes and insta comments throwing negativity at me and my walk.”

Last weekend I had the opportunity to walk in a fashion show during NYFW. Now, I am no model— I can barely walk down the street properly— but I walked out there feeling good and excited to support my friend. That quickly shifted when I was hit with the barrage of memes and insta comments throwing negativity at me and my walk. I can definitely make fun of myself and am in on most jokes but sometimes it just gets to be too much. So I had a big ole cry and felt truly embarrassed— until I remembered this @brenebrown quote: “If you aren’t in the arena getting your ass kicked, I’m not interested in your feedback.” And you know what, I am so damn proud of myself for having the courage to step out of my comfort zone, especially at 15-weeks pregnant in a flesh-colored bodysuit, and do my very best. We cannot control other’s actions, we can only control our own. So now, I’m just gonna smile brighter and keep on strutting. ?Shoutout to @kylerichards18 for absolutely killing it with @kyleandshahida! Such an amazing accomplishment ? #nyfw #babyonboard #bucketlist

She was referencing the mean comments that flooded her previous post of the media feedback of the Housewives’ presence during the show.

“I can definitely make fun of myself and am in on most jokes but sometimes it just gets to be too much,” Mellencamp’s response continued. “I am so damn proud of myself for having the courage to step out of my comfort zone, especially at 15-weeks pregnant in a flesh-colored bodysuit, and do my very best.”

The outfit she wore showed her growing baby bump which she showcased during her announcement last week:

She wasn’t the only person who is not familiar with modeling in the show. Richards also had her daughters, 19-year old Sophia Umansky and 23-year old Alexia Umansky walk in a striped yellow ruffled crop top and skirt with Femmes Sans Peur heels and a tiered ruffled maxi dress, respectively.

Mellencamp Arroyave and husband EdwinArroyave are parents to  5-ear old Cruz Arroyave , 6-year old Slate Arroyave, and 10-year old Isabella Arroyave, Edwin’s daughter from a previous relationship.

She previously shared that she had multiple miscarriages before conceiving her son via IVF

Milla Jovovich Celebrated 10-Year Wedding Anniversary with Family in London

Look who is having a good pregnancy while on a 10-year wedding anniversary trip with her hubby and kids?

Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich paused to take snaps in front of the London Bridge late last month with her screenwriter hubby Paul W.S. Anderson and their two daughters, 11-year old Ever Gabo  and  4-year old Dashiel Edan. The mom-to-be of three is prepping for the arrival of her Rainbow baby following a miscarriage from her last pregnancy.

“HAPPY 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY TO MY AMAZING HUSBAND!!! Looking at who we are today compared to the kids we were when we first met … it’s so crazy to see how far we’ve come together!” the third-time mom-to-be captioned her post. “What a joy it’s been living life with you for so many years! What a whirlwind, what a journey, what a truly incredible and epic experience it’s been!”

When the Hellboy star announced that she was expecting again, Jovovich opened up about the fear she felt over the prospect of experiencing another loss.

“After I found out I was pregnant 13 weeks ago, I had a mixture of feelings ranging between complete joy and utter terror,” she former model captioned a selfie of herself revealing her bump on August 7. “Because of my age and losing the last pregnancy I didn’t want to get attached to this potential baby too quickly.”

She added: That was obviously not fun and the last few months have been my family and I living on pins and needles waiting for a slew of different test results to come in and spending most of our time in doctors offices. Thank goodness we’re in the clear AND we found out that we’ve been blessed with another girl!??? Anyway, wish me and my baby luck! I send you all a lot of love and I’ll keep you posted on my progression! Xoxo m❤️”

Looks like everything is A-OK this time around! Congrats and Good Luck!

National Rainbow Baby Day Honors Pregnancy and Birth After Loss

National Rainbow Day

A “rainbow baby” is a child born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, or passing away of an infant. These babies signify hope and healing after a loss. For parents, these babies are “the rainbow after the storm.”

Yesterday, August 22 was National Rainbow Baby Day and offers mothers a chance to share their experiences, grieve, reflect, and celebrate the joy for their rainbow babies.

Rainbow maternity and newborn maternity shoots are trending ways to honor an “at last” pregnancy or baby after a miscarriage, stillborn, neonatal death or infant loss.

The term is symbolic to a rainbow that appears after a storm. People are even incorporating the theme in their pregnancy and birth announcements as some examples can be seen here. There are more and more articles about couples that are capturing their rainbow journey in the media like this touching story about one woman we spotted in PEOPLE magazine last year.

Along the way, we have also spotted some wonderful and heart-warming photo shoots out there that have captured our hearts. Here are a few:
