Your Guide to Celebrity LIVE Streams During COVID-19 Quarantine

During this coronavirus outbreak, we have seen a lot of celebrities take to their social media to connect with their fans.

Some have had misses, like Vanessa Hodgens who downplayed the seriousness of people losing their lives on an impromptu IG story and others like DJ D-Nice have hit it out the park by playing three nights in a row for up to 9 hours at a time entertaining world including many celebs like Mariah Carey, Paul MccCartney, Michelle Obama and everyone in between, gaining up to a million Instagram followers in the process.

Debbie Allen is hosting online dance classes called #dancewithdebbieallen.

Personally, I’ve benefited from some of these impromptu exchanges. I took in singer Miguel’s one hour Instastory Live jam session and was entertained by Cardi B‘s funny share that Brooklyn DJ iMarkkeyz turned into a chart topping hit song!

Couples have gotten into it to. John Legend played hits on the piano as his wife Chrissy Teigen jammed along, and later they played tunes while cooking. Country legend Keith Urban crooned to tunes as wife Nicole Kidman danced in the background.

While Tom Hanks and actor wife Rita Wilson recovered from the disease, Wilson rapped to Naughy By Nature‘s “Hip Hop Hooray“.

Some are branding their appearances and making gigs out of them. D-Nice’s started out as “Homeschool” and Chris Martin‘s regular sets are being called #TogetherAtHome.

Most of these shows have been free but leave it to enterprising soul singer  Erykah Badu to elevate the game with her “Quarantine Concert Series“, LIVE from her bedroom. She charged $1 for a stream and her production quality was A+ and involved more than one camera and camera angles. She sold merch and really converted all those stuck at home into a nice profitable gig.

Per Vibe magazine :

The Grammy winner also took to Instagram Live to explain some of the politics of being signed to a record label, and why she’s charging an entry fee. “We rely on our live shows and all of our live shows got canceled indefinitely,” said Badu.

“We’re not rich people, we just play rich people on TV. Some of us only have one form of income and that’s [live] shows. I wanted to create another revenue of income and you are helping me do that in a big way because this is an experiment. There’s nobody in between me and that dollar.”

Badu’s setlist will be handpicked by logged-in fans who vote during the stream.

Decade in Review: 10 Celeb Parenting Trends That Are Now Outdated

Having covered celebrity pregnancy, parenting and the “bump watch” for over a decade, I pride myself in being an institutional memory of the trends in this space.

As we close out on another decade, I’ve identified 10 trends that have come and gone from the past decade, including old ones that have faded out of style over time and new ones spearheaded by the recent popularity and usage of social media.

Let’s start with the trends that are

Outdated and going bye bye:

10. Million Dollar Deals for First Baby Photos

In 2007, Julia Roberts reportedly was the first celebrity to demand a six figure payday ($250,000) from PEOPLE magazine to get the rights to publish the first photos of her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel. OK magazine got a steal and paid merely a little over a half a million for pics of Gwen Stefanie’s 2 week old son, Kingston. OK Magazine lost their $2 million dollar bid for Britney Spear and Kevin Federline’s first baby pic to People magazine. Nicole Richie reportedly received $1M for her photo of son, Max and Christina Aguilera for her son.

With magazines, along with newspapers, losing tons of revenue as people start to rely on digital forms of media for news and information, it no longer made business sense to pay these astronomical amounts of money.

Also, with the advent of social media and more conscious celeb couples publishing their babies on Instagram for free, the less famous personalities who used to shop for first photo deals found there was no longer a market for them.

9. Pregnant Nude Covers

After Demi Moore posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991, it became a thing for stars to do the same.  Since then, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Nia Long and many more graced covers in the buff while expecting.

Soon, it became more of a quick and easy way to get publicity and attention, and eventually the public interest in them waned.

The last big photo issue was of Alanis Morissette in 2016. She did an undercover water shoot but the naked baby bump photo thing is more or less passe and not a public rosy stunt many will do.

8. The Celebrity Bounce Back

Around the same time that gossip magazines started to cover celebrity parents, we saw a lot of photos about the “bounce back”. It was as if it was a competition to see who could pop up slim and trim months or even weeks after baby.

It was ridiculous for several reasons: 1) a lot of the covers were photoshopped; 2) some of the celebs either genetically were predisposed to lose weight fast or underwent surgical procedures to quickly trim down after baby; 3) it set up a dangerous standard given that a lot of celebs have private chefs and trainers to help them lose weight fast; and 4) it sent a damaging message to women who should be concerned with safely healing from delivery and focusing on nursing and connecting with their newborns.

In any event, those magazine covers are not as common as before. In fact, a bunch of celebrity women like Chrissy Teigen, Blake Livey, Mila Kunis and others have spoken out about the ridiculous expectations on them to return to their pre-pregnancy form after baby.

The industry has gotten the message and do not sensationalize the bounce back as much as before.

7. Sponsored Baby Showers

Once upon a time, celebrities were approached by companies and brand representatives to host a baby shower for them in exchange for promotion of their products. The companies knew there were tons of promotions that came with the exposure.

Amazon.com sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower in 2018. Although the trend is dying out, over the past decade, Danielle Jonas and her husband Kevin celebrated a baby shower thrown by Fit Pregnancy magazine.

Also, Burt’s Bees was among the sponsors of Kourtney Kardashian’baby shower when she was pregnant with daughter Penelope. Similarly, Le Bebe CoCo  was among Kristin Cavallari‘s baby shower sponsors. Target hosted Beverley Mitchell’s baby shower. Several liquor companies provided the libations for cocktails served up at Love and Hip Hop’s  Yandy Smith‘s baby shower.

Jaime King enjoyed some fab brand goodies at her shower.  Ecoya‘s Sweet Pea & Jasmine home fragrance collection, a pink Quinny Buzz Special Edition stroller, a mamaRoo baby swing, a pink Hoppop Bath tub, a pink Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket, a Timi and Leslie diaper bag and a 5 ft. custom-made giraffe by Melissa and Doug all contributed to Victoria Beckham‘s baby shower.

Finally, Belly Bandit sponsored Jewel’s baby shower.

While this trend continues, audiences do not respond as favorable to them any longer and the comment section on sponsored baby showers are sometimes filled with negative commentary from fans who want less rich new parents to be showered with the gifts.

SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN

6. Hiding Children’s Face in Social Media

We famously were contacted by Stella McCartney’s reps over 10 years ago to remove paparazzi photos of her traveling with her children in the street posted on the blog. A few years later, Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard launched a campaign in 2014 to get a California state law passed to protect children of celebs from paparazzi. Others have done the same.

Eva Mendes and Kerry Washington do not show their kids in public or social media at all.

In the social media era, a few refuse to feature their children in social media or they hide their faces when they do: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, brit star Rochelle Humes, Kylie Jenner  and Jenna Dewan all have done that in the past or continue to.

5. Celebrity Kids Instagram Accounts

On the flip side, several less famous stars realize the tremendous money making and marketing opportunities in giving their children their own account and branding their name and fame from birth.

It’s a pretty recent phenomenon, but starting with , DJ Khaled who launched an Instagram account  for his son Asadh in 2016 when Baby Khaled was just one month old, many celebs have created accounts for their kids as well.

Little  Asadh now has 1.8M followers, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade‘s 1 year old daughter Kaavia James boasts 1M followers and Michael Phelps’ 3-year old son Boomer Phelps  now has 665K followers of his Instagram page.

I think the youngest baby to get an Insta was Cali Clay Shephard, daughter of model Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard whose account was opened at just 16 days old.

This is a trend that is not getting old but is growing as more realize the revenue generating options that open up with having a massive engaged following.

4.  Hiding Pregnancy to Late Trimester

From my memory in covering this topic, I think that Kylie Jenner, Anna Kournokova and a few others did the best job at hiding their pregnancies for all 9 months. It’s pretty hard to hide from the paparazzi and shield their bump during events, filming and promoting a project.

But in 2011, Evangeline Lilly managed to almost completely disguise her entire pregnancy until papps found her in Hawaii while almost done gestating her first child. Jennifer Lopez and Adele managed to hide their respective pregnancies for over 5 months.

Given how common miscarriage is, a lot of women, whether a celebrity or not, wait until the latest time possible when they feel comfortable that they will be able to carry their baby to term to announce baby news.

Hiding an early pregnancy while building a career in front of the public is not easy to do as Cardi B learned but it can be done and the more private or celebs are learning from others how to do it.

3. Launch New Career/Re invigorate Career

Also during the height of the interest in celeb baby bumps, a lot of stars who were formerly very popular but whose fame had waned were able to reinvigorate their respective careers after having a baby.

For example, Kim Karadashian West once lamented that she saw a spike in paparazzi photos whenever she is expecting.

About 10 years ago, Mommyish published a gallery of celebrities who became more famous after becoming pregnant or becoming a mom.

It is not clear is the general public is as enamored with celebrity pregnancy as it once was before so a baby may not be the career boost as it was in the past.

2. Launch a Maternity or Parenting Related Brand

Tia and Tamera Mowry famously launched a breastfeeding brand called Milky after becoming parents for the first time.  Others like Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum launched maternity lines or added children clothing to their existing lines as with Stella McCartney and The Kardashians after they became a mom, respectively.

Instagram famous women shift their feeds and started featuring their babies and promoting parenting and motherhood related brands as part of their new post baby rebranding.

So at least in social media, a new baby can create opportunities.

1. Being Open and Honest about Miscarriage

Micarriage is a taboo among many families. It is unspoken and women who go through it suffer in silence or keep it a secret. It occurs more often than many would believe, yet women usually keep it a secret from family and friends. It certainly taints and colors one’s journey to motherhood, whether it happened in the early weeks or mid term. A woman will earnestly never be the same after suffering through one, especially she and her partner were planning for the baby they lost.

In recent years, a lot of celebrities have been open and transparent about having gone through a miscarriage.

And a lot more are being open and transparent about losses they’ve had in the past.

From many of the stars of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mithcell to Michelle Obama to Beyonce and Carrie Underwood and Gabrielle Union, openly sharing about a miscarriage or pregnancy loss is the thing to do.

Because of their influence, platform and reach, it’s awesome that these women are sharing their stories to help comfort and empathy for those who have endured it or may be unknowing about how common it is.

In the coming decade, let’s hope the trend of being relatable and real continue and we can leave behind those trends that created stress and anxiety among their followers behind.

These Were the Top 14 Most Anticipated Celebrity Births of All Time

We can safely say that if and when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry welcome their first child, the occasion will be included in the short list of anticipated babies of all time which include the other Hollywood actress to welcome a child with a Prince.

1 Grace Kelly, a Hollywood legend, captivated the nation after she married Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, to become princess consort of Monaco, and the world watched closely as they started a family. On April 19, 1958,  presented her newborn son Albert to residents of the principality on April 19, 1958, from the balcony of the palace, along with their daughter Caroline.

2. Before then, over in the states comedienne Lucille Ball and husband Desi Arnaz‘s son, Desi Jr, born on January 19, 1953, was most anticipated. That baby was the first to grace the cover of TV Guide in April 1953 with cover headline, “Lucy’s $50,000,000 baby.”

3. Then came the big Camelot birth on November 25, 1960 of little John F. Kennedy Jr., the son of President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, born just 6 weeks after his dad became president.

4. It will take a few more decades for there to be a baby to capture so much attention. This one was anticipated worldwide. Prince William, the first born child to Prince Charles and Princess Diana of Wales joined the world on June 21, 1982.

5. The next big Hollywood baby was Lourdes “Lola” Leon born Oct. 14, 1996 to mom Madonna and her then  boyfriend and personal trainer, Carlos Leon.

6. The year 2006 was big for the birth of two celebrity baby girls of two popular actors: The April 18, 2006 birth of Suri Cruise, daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes; and

7. A month later, in May 27, 2006 of Shiloh Pitt, the daughter of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

8.  Two years later came the first major celebrated twins: the son and daughter of singer Jennifer Lopez  and  Marc Anthony on  born Feb. 22, 2008, when Max and Emme came into the world.

9. Also that year, fans of Nicole Kidman were happy to see her end her openly discussed fertility quest with a baby when her first daughter, Sunday Rose, with husband Keith Urban was born  in July  2008.

10. Then there was the first baby girl after a couple of boys for Victoria Beckham and David Beckham who welcomed their first daughter, Harper Seven on July 9, 2011.

11. A year later  came Queen Bey, Beyonce and Jay Z‘s, much anticipated arrival, Blue Ivy Carter born on January 7, 2012, after her mom had already experienced at least one miscarriage.

12.  Later that year,  another woman who openly talked about her struggles to get pregnant was Mariah Carey who, along with her then husband Nick Cannon greeted twins, Monroe and Moroccan, on April 30, 2012.

13. A year later, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West welcomed their first child, daughter, North, on June 15, 2013.

14. The last big anticipated birth was Beyonce’s twins Suri and Rumi Carter on June 14, 2017.

New Study Blames Older Celeb Moms For Fueling Misconceptions About Fertility Later in Life

We’ve discussed this before, how celebrity women over 40 who have babies but do not disclose their fertility journey contribute to a common misconception among older average women. A lot who want to start a family but have been putting it off because of their career, not yet ready or not in a committed monogamous relationship or marriage see these older celebs popping out kids and assume it will be easy for them too.

A new piece in the Sun laments on how celebs that have children later in life to get pregnant are fueling misconceptions about the chances of becoming pregnant later in life.

The piece points out recent work by researchers at New York University  who found that more than half of celebrity pregnancies and births mentioned in the likes of Cosmopolitan, People Magazine and US Weekly were over the age of 35.

The findings were presented at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) congress in Texas.

ASRM president Dr Richard Paulson said: “A reluctance to show challenges is misinformation and can affect decisions.”

While Mariah Carey, Nicole Kidman and others have been quite open, some like Janet Jackson and Halle Berry who had pregnancies in their very late 40s have not.

A February Time.com article addressed how older women should be more open about their fertility.

“The likelihood of a healthy live birth without fertility treatments at age 50 is less than one in a million,” Eve Feinberg writes. “There are limits, however, to what technology can accomplish. IVF cannot completely overcome age related infertility. To date, the oldest woman to be successful with IVF using her own current eggs is 46 years old. Women who conceive with IVF beyond age 46 are either using their own eggs that were frozen at a younger age or, more likely, donor eggs.

Donor eggs are a game changer: the success is tied to the age of the age of the woman donating the egg, not the age of the woman who receives the egg. The average woman donating eggs is under 30 and national success rates are upwards of 50 percent per attempt.”

The research blames the media that reports on pregnancies of older celeb moms for not balancing their coverage with information about fertility.

Present company excluded, of course, right? (smile)

We have a running tally of over 40 celebs who gave birth over 40, but this blog frequently posts articles, news pieces and opinion features warning about the dangers of relying on celebrities to guide your family planning decisions and choices and about the challenges of getting pregnant starting in the 30s.

Adele Did the Universal ‘Pregnant Woman Belly Cup’ and Sent the Internet Crazy!

adele-belly

Yesterday, Adele did the universal subconscious hand over belly cupping that pregnant women do without even thinking, but only she did it in a photo that she posted on her Instagram account. You know what that means?

She triggered the bump watch brigade as speculation among her fans and followers immediately swarmed in social media that the 28-year old singer-songwriter is expecting her second child with husband Simon Konecki.

Recall that at the end of her North America tour, the multi-Grammy Award winner told the farewell tour audience that she was going to go have a baby, indicating that she will take her time off from touring to grow her family.

We know this may be a false alarm, but there have been several incidences in the past when a celebrity may have been pregnant at a time she was photographed cupping her belly but had not made any big public announcement confirming such news. Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez come to mind. (see above and actually Carey later miscarried, we believe)

We have blogged often about the “Bump Watch Speculation” which happens when a celeb woman has overindulged in a meal and is photographed by the paparazzi emerging from a restaurant, wears a dress with an unnatural bubble in it or gains a few pounds that show up in the belly area.  She is immediately presumed to be with child.

It could be nothing. Time will tell. We’ll be waiting. Stay tuned. (smile)

In Bump Watch News: Beyonce, Tori Spelling and Hannah Jeter

bumpwatch

I must admit that I enjoy that the Bey Hive is on patrol to shut down critics of Beyonce in the comment section to articles about her like this one below about her first major 3-hour shopping trip after announcing her news. Go Beygency, Go!

Oh and in other pregnant celebrity news, Tori Spelling posted a photo of herself at close to term on her social media account.

And after having very public and rumored relationships  with a bunch of our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums like Mariah Carey, Jessica Alba, Vanessa Lachey, Jessica Biel, and Adriana Lima, ex MLB star Derek Jeter and his Victoria Secret swimsuit model wife Hannah Jeter are expecting their first child together since marrying

She posted a bump photo on Instagram recently.

And now a repost of the E! article about Bey:

If you were browsing the racks at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills Thursday, you were in some special company.

Fresh off her 2017 Grammys performance and wins, Beyoncé made a rare public appearance at the luxury department store during its regular open hours and spent about three hours shopping.

The 35-year-old pop star, who is expecting twins with husband Jay Z, dressed casually in a black printed T-shirt and shorts and white sneakers and was accompanied by a group of bodyguards.

She did not buy children’s items. She walked through several floors, looking at designer gowns, purses, jewelry and shoes. She purchased a $1,225 pair of redIsabel Marart Laith leather knee-high boots, a pair of Ulla Johnson shoes and Nike sneakers, a source told E! News exclusively.

Beyoncé spent about 20 minutes in the store’s Barneys Bungalow, a specialty space where gowns from Prabal Gurung, J. Mendel, Lanvin, JC Obando, Monique Lhuillier, YSL and Manolo Blahnik and other designer brands, as well as luxury tuxedos and accessories, are displayed in honor of Hollywood’s award season. Several racks of dresses and other items were brought out for the singer, who sat on a light green couch.

“Beyoncé tried on several dresses but began not to feel well and was tired,” the source said.

“She seemed very nice and was very casual,” the source added about the singer’s visit. “She had several bodyguards around her and everyone in the store was chatting about her being there.”

The source also said Beyoncé has bought children’s items at Barney’s in the past.

The singer announced her pregnancy on Feb. 1 via a baby bump photo posted on her Instagram page. She followed it up with a full album of maternity pics, which also featured her and Jay Z’s 5-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy.

Last weekend, Beyoncé showcased her baby bump publicly for the first time, at the 2017 Grammys, where she won two awards and gave a much-talked about maternity-themed performance.

Nick Cannon is Expecting another Baby and ex Mariah Carey is Cool With It

nick-cannon

Actor and musician Nick Cannon is expecting his third child with the current Miss Universe Guam Brittany Bell and his ex wife Mariah Carey is totally cool with her 5-year old twins’ Roe & Roc’s dad having a child with another woman.

Cannon only recently revealed that he is expecting with the beauty queen who also was Miss Arizona 2010. Speaking on the Breakfast Club radio show last Thursday, the America’s Got Talent host said he is going to be a father for the third time.

“I’ve got a baby on the way,” he informed the show hosts. “God said be fruitful and multiply. I’m doing the Lord’s work … everybody get a baby! I’m passing them out.”

The TV show host’s dad, James Cannon reportedly told Hollywood Life that there is no bad blood between the former couple.

“It’s all good. Nick wants a boy and I would like a grandson,” James Cannon said. “Nick decided to go public and there are no bad feelings between him and Mariah, everything is ‘cool.’ Everyone is trying to move on with love and positivity.”

Meanwhile, Bell celebrated the impending birth of her child at a baby shower that included Miss California USA, Miss Wyoming USA and Miss Arizona USA.

A sweet moment of#celebration with a few of the many incredible women in my life,” she captioned a photo shared on Instagram. “Missing the rest of you ????? Miss USA /Miss Universe not only puts you in a rare sisterhood no money can buy.. but your child ends up with some of the most naturally beautiful, sweetest, and strongest women from around the country/world to call Aunties!!? ?#misscaliforniausa#misswyomingusa#missarizonausa #missusa

She also welcomed another year of life with some grand balloons and took to her Instagram page to share her happiness.

Happiness isn’t even the word ?? one photo can’t even sum it all up. What a birthday it was…?

A photo posted by Brittany Bell (@missbbell) on

With all the new attention she has gotten since Cannon revealed the identity of the woman carrying his child recently, she also updated her new followers (and haters because that’s what people do in social media) with a Throwback Thursday photo of herself as a gum ball machine! Cute!

This gorgeous maternity photo along with the biblical caption, “Children are a gift from God…” Psalm 127:3″. It is probably to address some of the judgmental people and crazies that are now bombarding her page! Sheesh!

This is a beautiful photo and children ARE indeed gifts! We here at Bellyitch wish her a healthy remaining pregnancy, labor and delivery! Godspeed, Brittany!

Celebrity Couples whose Union Didn’t Survive Their Baby’s First Birthdays

bellyitcblog.com spli up

US Weekly reports that Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green have split after 11 years together.

It is the latest in a slate of high-profile celeb break ups this summer including Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Sienna Miller and Tom Sturridge, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick, Charlize Theron and Sean Penn, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton.

Break ups are sad and we’ve notice that in the 7 years that Bellyitch Blog has been in existence, a substantial amount of celebrity women who we have had on our “bumpwatch” list have broken up with their respective significant others.

Some broke up before the baby was even born: Christina Milian, Kelis, Heidi Klum and January Jones, and many more split with their respective hubby/baby daddies before they even gave birth.

Last year, CiaraEva Marcille (nee Pigford),  and Amber Rose split with their partners before each of  their baby’s turned 6 months old. The separations have been messy, still.  A few years ago, Selma Blair and her ex Jason Bleick split up 14 months after welcoming their first child together.

Others we’ve covered who have called it quits include: The Jamie Foxx show actress Garcelle Beauvais, TV host Padma Lakshmi from Top Chef, Jennifer Lopez, Mariah Carey, Jennifer Freeman from My Wife and Kids, Lauryn Hill, Kimora Lee Simmons (Djimon Hounsou days), Hilary Duff, Fantasia, Halle Berry, Jill Scott, Kate Hudson, Jamie Lyn Spears, Lauren London, Monyetta Shaw (NeYo’s ex), Golden Brooks from “Girlfriends”.

At this point, it’s probably safer to start chronicling those who are still together because they are the new exception, not the rule in Hollywood, it seems. But hey, so long as everyone is happier and better off apart and the off-springs are co-parented well with little to minimum drama, right?

No judgment from us, okay. We’re  just pointing out the trends and facts. Just the facts, ma’am, just the facts! (*smirk*)
