Congratulations are in order to rapper Nicki Minaj who is expecting her first child with her husband Kenneth Petty as she announced her news on her Instagram yesterday to the surprise of none of the Internet sleuths who had already recognized all the clues that she was pregnant, beginning with speculation last month when she posted a curious photo trying to conceal her bump in high rise bikini bottoms.
“Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude. Thank you all for the well wishes,” Minaj captioned the third in a set of formal colorful maternity photos where she is sitting on a pink couch. The last of the photos is her draped in white in an editorial shot made to look angelic, taken by famed photographer David LaChappelle.
Part of being a celebrity woman of child bearing years is that you have people constantly speculating about whether or not you are pregnant. It can frustrating especially if you had been actively trying but keep having to see and respond or ignore rumors published in the tabloids or social media. Model Chrissy Teigen, actress Gabrielle Union and many others suffered with infertility while batting down insenstive demands from people asking when they would be having their first chilld.
However, when the moment that a star does get pregnant, she then has the challenge that many women have of trying to keep it private for at least the first three months when the risk for miscarriage is the highest. After the first trimester, the chances of that mom-to-be carrying a baby full term and having a healthy labor and delivery shoots up exponentialy.
Still, sometimes the public guesses right because there are tell tale signs and Minaj displayed them ALL!!!
After the Super Bass performer made her announcement, many fans said in the comment sections under news reports that the news was of no surprise to them based on the various clues that exist when a woman in the spotlight is hiding her pregnancy:
For women who famously show off their fab bods at every chance they get, seeing them suddenly stick to posting head shots inscial meida is a dead giveaway that they are trying to perhaps hide weight gain in the tummy area and elsewhere.
For the weeks leading up to the announcement the Anaconda rapper shared photos of her self performing songs with only her head in the shot.
You can hide your body by carefully selecting what you post but unless you plan to live a hermit life or escape to another country, then there is a high liklihood that the paparazzi will spot you out and about.
When Kylie Jenner was secrety pregnant with her daughter Stormi, fans speculated her condition because she wore baggy clothes. Her sister, Khloe Kardashian, revealed that she used an A-line coat to hide her bump until she announced the news that she was expecting a baby.
If you are pregnant during Award season, as Cardi B was, you can get your stylist to design outfits that creatively conceal your bump.
Most recently, currently pregant stars, actress Sophie Turner and model Gigi Hadid were spotted in super baggy clothes and reported frequently as being pregnant in the gossip press. The oversized PJs were a dead give away Hadid and boyfriend Zayn Malik were expecting their first child together even before she confirmed her news last week.
The quarantine period was very convenient for Jessica Biel to lay low and incubate a whole other person. She and her musician/producer husband Justin Timberlake reportedly welcomed their second child recently and no one knew. They tore a page out of Ana Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias‘ book when those two had a whole set of twins on the download back in 2017.
Some have tried to keep the secret for the total nine months and have come close.
Evangeline Lily and Jennifer Hudson got caught by paparazzi both around 8 months pregnant. They were in remote places where there is no Hollywood scrutiny but still got busted.
Others succeed.
In 2018, How to Get Away with Murder’ star Karla Souza, and in 2014, Ozark star Laura Linney announced the birth of their first child, respectively, after the baby was already born.
Last month, Minaj gave yet another clue when she showed a video of Petty rubbing her belly. In other years, the maternal subtle cradle of the tummy is a sign a woman is expecting. It’s a subcouncous and natural maneuver which is a sign.
Well there you have it. If you are a woman in the lime light and seek to totally hide your pregnancy from the media and the public, avoid doing any of the above. Good luck!
Welcome to the world, baby girl Culiner!
E! News can exclusively reveal that Daily Pop co-host Carissa Culiner and husband Shanon Culiner welcomed their second child, a daughter, on Tuesday, April 28 at 11:01 a.m. in Los Angeles.
Carissa and Shanon named their bundle of joy Zoey Grace Culiner. Too cute!
Carissa tells E! exclusively, “Delivery went extremely smoothly. I even got to do the Kourtney Kardashian thing and partly pull her out of me. It was the most amazing experience! We’re back home now, and mom and Zoey are doing great. Chase is loving being a big brother so far. He thinks Zoey is just the cutest thing!”
Carissa shared some exclusive first photos (which were edited with the help of Andrea Larison with Children At Play Photography) of baby Zoey Grace and we must say she’s beyond adorable!
During the Oct. 22 episode of Daily Pop, Carissa confirmed that she was pregnant with baby no. 2. Unsurprisingly, at the time, Carissa was “very excited” by her pregnancy news as they “wanted another baby.” It was during this episode that the E! personality confirmed she was due in April 2020.
Later in 2019, Carissa was joined by her family on the daytime chat show, where they learned they were expecting a little girl.
“I am so happy!” Carissa gushed in excitement. “I wanted a girl, I just thought it was going to be a boy.”
The TV personality and her husband are also parents to their son Chase, whom they welcomed back in November 2017.
“Chase arrived last night at 9:48p – 9lbs 13oz, 23 inches and a full head of hair!” Carissa previously shared in an exclusive statement to E! News. “Both of us are doing great!”
Looks like Chase is officially a big brother now.
Congratulations to the happy parents! Scroll down to see all the precious first pics of little Zoey Grace Culiner!

It is not uncommon for celebrities to file for trademarks associated with their children, but as what happened with Beyonce who has had trouble claiming Blue Ivy, Keeping Up With the Kardashians star Kylie Jenner is facing a similar hurdle trying to capture the copyright of her daughter, Stormi.
Page Six reports that a company called Business Moves Consulting successfully trademarked the words “Stormi Couture” about a month after the birth of Jenner’s first child with ex Travis Scott in 2018.
It recently filed a challenge to Jenner’s application for that same term asserting that the dual trademark would likely confuse its own customers. The company also claimed that it doubted that Jenner actually had plans to use the mark and comply with the United States Patent and Trademark office’s requirement that the mark have a “bona fide intent” to be used “in commerce for identified goods or services.”
Jenner has also filed for marks “Kylie Body” and “Kylie Body by Kylie Jenner” on Valentine’s Day. She already owns trademarks on “Kybow,” “Kyliner,” “Glitter Eyes,” “Kylie Baby,” “Lip Kit,” “Kylie Museum,” “Kylie Kon” among others.
The same company was also on the other side of a celebrity child name dispute when DJ Khaled sued it in 2018, claiming that it was selling clothing using his son Asahd’s name.
A Mississippi Brand strategist named Curtis Bordenave is the face behind the company and has successfully trademarked the words Sirius, Z100 and the call letters for a bunch of other radio stations. He trademarked but eventually lost his initial application and claim to Cardi B, Asahd, and the words Radio Station, Call Letters, Mansplain and Alternative Facts.
According to a Clarion Ledger article about him, the married father of four travels to hair shows and teaches people how to manage their intellectual property.
“I think I’ve been waiting for this moment since the day I found out I was pregnant,” Kylie said of her newest beauty line. “An entire collection by @kyliecosmetics dedicated to my beautiful daughter,” the KUWTK star wrote online.
Kylie is attempting to trademark her daughter’s name along with “Stormi World,” which is the theme park that Kylie created and uses to celebrate her daughter’s birthdays. Stay tuned to see how the dispute between Kylie and Business Moves Consulting turns out.
His widow Vanessa Bryant, a celebrity mom covered often on the blog, gave a heart breaking but still beautiful eulogy of her husband and daughter. As USA Today summarized in its coverage:
She mourned the loss of her “baby girl” Gianna, “a sweet and gentle soul” and preternaturally talented athlete who she said was destined for WNBA greatness. She remembered her husband as a soulful romantic with a “tender heart” and a “doting” father for whom family always came first.
“They were funny, happy, silly, and they loved life,” Vanessa said of Kobe and Gianna, adding: “God knew they couldn’t be on this earth without each other. He had to bring them home to heaven together.”
Beyonce Knowles Carter opened the event performing one of her hits, “XO” which she said was one of Kobe’s favorite song with lyrics that go, “In the darkest hour / I’ll search through the crowd / Your face is all I can see / I’ll give you everything.” She later burst into a soulful rendition of her song, “Halo”
Alicia Keys moved the crowd by playing Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata,” a piece she said was favored by Kobe and Vanessa.
Keys had previously paid tribute to Kobe and Gianna on the night they died, performing “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye” alongside Boyz II Men at the Grammy Awards last month.
At various points throughout the event, the crowd broke out in chants of “Kobe! Kobe!”
Retired NBA stars Michael Jordan, Dwyane Wade, and Tim Duncan along with entertainer Jennifer Lopez and her fiance retired baseball player Alex Rodriguez and late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel were all in attendance for the ceremony, along with other celebs like friends of the Bryant family Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West.
The date chosen for the memorial — Feb. 24, or 2/24/20 — is a combination of their jersey numbers. Gianna wore No. 2 and her dad wore No. 24 in the latter part of his 20-season career with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Tickets went for variations of 2 and 4, $24.24 or $224 for two.
Several NBA legends like former teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Jordon gave rousing speeches by my fave was by University of Oregon player Sabrina Ionesco who gave a wonderful speech and tribute to girls sports too in honor of GiGi .
"I still text [Kobe] even though he's not here."

Proceeds will go to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation which raises money to provide sports education and training services for young women. The foundation was originally established as the Mamba Sports Academy, but Bryant’s widow announced that the name was changed to honor their daughter.
Kobe Bryant gave himself the moniker “Black Mamba” after a character in the Quentin Tarantino film Kill Bill.
“Because there is no #24 without #2, we have updated the Mamba Sports Foundation to now be called the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation,” Vanessa Bryant wrote on her Instagram page announcing the name change.
The two were headed to a game during a basketball tournament at a sports arena in Thousand Oaks, California named for Mamba when the helicopter they were riding in crashed killing them along with Orange Coast College baseball coach John Altobelli, 56, his wife Keri Altobelli, 46, and their daughter Alyssa Altobelli, 14; Sarah Chester, 45, and her daughter Payton Chester, 13; as well as Mamba Sports Academy coach Christina Mauser, 38; and pilot Ara Zobayan, 50.
Vanessa, when you told me the Moonlight Sonata is such a beautiful part of your love story bc Kobe vowed to learn it for you, I was speechless… I felt the depth of your love for each other & your girls with every note I played today. The love between u lights up the world. pic.twitter.com/NeVOggET3k

Also from a NBCNews report:
Bryant and his daughter were traveling to Gigi’s basketball game in a Sikorsky S-76B helicopter, when it crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, Calif., on Jan. 26. All eight passengers and the pilot were killed.
The Bryants were laid to rest in a private ceremony in Southern California on Feb. 7.
Before the public ceremony got underway, the Los Angeles Times reported Vanessa Bryant has filed a lawsuit against Island Express Helicopters, the company that operated the chopper. NPR later confirmed the lawsuit with the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board said in its investigative update this month that the chopper’s rotors were both powered and turning at the time of impact, which it said indicates “the engines showed no evidences of uncontained or catastrophic internal failure.”
Photos taken shortly after the crash show conditions were foggy in the hills above Calabasas, but as NPR’s Russell Lewis has reported, the final investigative findings are not expected for at least a year.

Entrepreneur and Reality Tv star Khloe Kardashian threw a lavish neutral-colored bear themed baby shower for her BFF, actress and model Malika Haqq, over the weekend.
The event was held at the luxurious Waldorf Astoria hotel in Beverly Hills, California. Celebrity event planner Mindy Weiss organized the luxe celebration.
The mom-to-be wore a muted strappy floor length fish tail, bump-hugging jersey dress with her hair pulled back in a sleek ponytail and subtle and soft makeup.
Guests included family and friends and fellow celebs like Kylie Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Tamar Braxton, Don’t Be Tardy’s Brielle Biermann and her mom Kim Zolciak-Biermann and others. Haqq’s twin sister Khadijah Haqq was also on hand.
Attendees were treated to goodies like sweet honey tea in adorable bear jars, petite pastries, a multi-tiered cake and cereal because according to Khloe in an insta story video, Malika craved cereal for most of her pregnancy.
They also played typical baby shower games like the “can’t say ‘baby’” game, the guess Malika’s baby belly girth and the guess the baby’s delivery date and guess the number of cookies in the jar game.
They went home with cute favors like baby bottle shaped bottle openers.
Malika is expecting a baby boy, the first child with her on-again-off-again boyfriend, rapper O.T. Genasis.
“A BEARy beautiful Baby Shower!!” Khloe captioned a series of photos of the event. “I have been planning Malika’s baby shower in my head for quite some time. Malika was very specific with not wanting color. So this was the only color we were able to get away with LOL It turned out beautifully!”
Everyone wore brown, white and other muted and neutral colors to the event to accommodate Malika’s request.
“I could not thank @mindyweiss @andrew_mindyweiss @jeffleatham enough!!” Khloe added thanking the event planning staff. “I know I’m a lot at times because I’m so specific and I love to micro manage but you guys always go over the top. You surpass any dream that I have ever conjured up in my head as to how I want something to look. Every time I am WOWED by your work and perfection! Thank you guys for being the best! You literally are my dream team! Thank to everyone who helped put this spectacular shower together!”
Here are some videos and photos of the fun event that the host, guests and vendors posted on their respective social media pages
Having covered celebrity pregnancy, parenting and the “bump watch” for over a decade, I pride myself in being an institutional memory of the trends in this space.
As we close out on another decade, I’ve identified 10 trends that have come and gone from the past decade, including old ones that have faded out of style over time and new ones spearheaded by the recent popularity and usage of social media.
Let’s start with the trends that are
In 2007, Julia Roberts reportedly was the first celebrity to demand a six figure payday ($250,000) from PEOPLE magazine to get the rights to publish the first photos of her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel. OK magazine got a steal and paid merely a little over a half a million for pics of Gwen Stefanie’s 2 week old son, Kingston. OK Magazine lost their $2 million dollar bid for Britney Spear and Kevin Federline’s first baby pic to People magazine. Nicole Richie reportedly received $1M for her photo of son, Max and Christina Aguilera for her son.
With magazines, along with newspapers, losing tons of revenue as people start to rely on digital forms of media for news and information, it no longer made business sense to pay these astronomical amounts of money.
Also, with the advent of social media and more conscious celeb couples publishing their babies on Instagram for free, the less famous personalities who used to shop for first photo deals found there was no longer a market for them.
9. Pregnant Nude Covers
After Demi Moore posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991, it became a thing for stars to do the same. Since then, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Nia Long and many more graced covers in the buff while expecting.
Soon, it became more of a quick and easy way to get publicity and attention, and eventually the public interest in them waned.
The last big photo issue was of Alanis Morissette in 2016. She did an undercover water shoot but the naked baby bump photo thing is more or less passe and not a public rosy stunt many will do.
8. The Celebrity Bounce Back
Around the same time that gossip magazines started to cover celebrity parents, we saw a lot of photos about the “bounce back”. It was as if it was a competition to see who could pop up slim and trim months or even weeks after baby.
It was ridiculous for several reasons: 1) a lot of the covers were photoshopped; 2) some of the celebs either genetically were predisposed to lose weight fast or underwent surgical procedures to quickly trim down after baby; 3) it set up a dangerous standard given that a lot of celebs have private chefs and trainers to help them lose weight fast; and 4) it sent a damaging message to women who should be concerned with safely healing from delivery and focusing on nursing and connecting with their newborns.
In any event, those magazine covers are not as common as before. In fact, a bunch of celebrity women like Chrissy Teigen, Blake Livey, Mila Kunis and others have spoken out about the ridiculous expectations on them to return to their pre-pregnancy form after baby.
The industry has gotten the message and do not sensationalize the bounce back as much as before.
Once upon a time, celebrities were approached by companies and brand representatives to host a baby shower for them in exchange for promotion of their products. The companies knew there were tons of promotions that came with the exposure.
Amazon.com sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower in 2018. Although the trend is dying out, over the past decade, Danielle Jonas and her husband Kevin celebrated a baby shower thrown by Fit Pregnancy magazine.
Also, Burt’s Bees was among the sponsors of Kourtney Kardashian’s baby shower when she was pregnant with daughter Penelope. Similarly, Le Bebe CoCo was among Kristin Cavallari‘s baby shower sponsors. Target hosted Beverley Mitchell’s baby shower. Several liquor companies provided the libations for cocktails served up at Love and Hip Hop’s Yandy Smith‘s baby shower.
Jaime King enjoyed some fab brand goodies at her shower. Ecoya‘s Sweet Pea & Jasmine home fragrance collection, a pink Quinny Buzz Special Edition stroller, a mamaRoo baby swing, a pink Hoppop Bath tub, a pink Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket, a Timi and Leslie diaper bag and a 5 ft. custom-made giraffe by Melissa and Doug all contributed to Victoria Beckham‘s baby shower.
Finally, Belly Bandit sponsored Jewel’s baby shower.
While this trend continues, audiences do not respond as favorable to them any longer and the comment section on sponsored baby showers are sometimes filled with negative commentary from fans who want less rich new parents to be showered with the gifts.
We famously were contacted by Stella McCartney’s reps over 10 years ago to remove paparazzi photos of her traveling with her children in the street posted on the blog. A few years later, Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard launched a campaign in 2014 to get a California state law passed to protect children of celebs from paparazzi. Others have done the same.
Eva Mendes and Kerry Washington do not show their kids in public or social media at all.
In the social media era, a few refuse to feature their children in social media or they hide their faces when they do: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, brit star Rochelle Humes, Kylie Jenner and Jenna Dewan all have done that in the past or continue to.
On the flip side, several less famous stars realize the tremendous money making and marketing opportunities in giving their children their own account and branding their name and fame from birth.
It’s a pretty recent phenomenon, but starting with , DJ Khaled who launched an Instagram account for his son Asadh in 2016 when Baby Khaled was just one month old, many celebs have created accounts for their kids as well.
Little Asadh now has 1.8M followers, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade‘s 1 year old daughter Kaavia James boasts 1M followers and Michael Phelps’ 3-year old son Boomer Phelps now has 665K followers of his Instagram page.
I think the youngest baby to get an Insta was Cali Clay Shephard, daughter of model Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard whose account was opened at just 16 days old.
This is a trend that is not getting old but is growing as more realize the revenue generating options that open up with having a massive engaged following.
4. Hiding Pregnancy to Late Trimester
From my memory in covering this topic, I think that Kylie Jenner, Anna Kournokova and a few others did the best job at hiding their pregnancies for all 9 months. It’s pretty hard to hide from the paparazzi and shield their bump during events, filming and promoting a project.
But in 2011, Evangeline Lilly managed to almost completely disguise her entire pregnancy until papps found her in Hawaii while almost done gestating her first child. Jennifer Lopez and Adele managed to hide their respective pregnancies for over 5 months.
Given how common miscarriage is, a lot of women, whether a celebrity or not, wait until the latest time possible when they feel comfortable that they will be able to carry their baby to term to announce baby news.
Hiding an early pregnancy while building a career in front of the public is not easy to do as Cardi B learned but it can be done and the more private or celebs are learning from others how to do it.
Also during the height of the interest in celeb baby bumps, a lot of stars who were formerly very popular but whose fame had waned were able to reinvigorate their respective careers after having a baby.
For example, Kim Karadashian West once lamented that she saw a spike in paparazzi photos whenever she is expecting.
About 10 years ago, Mommyish published a gallery of celebrities who became more famous after becoming pregnant or becoming a mom.
It is not clear is the general public is as enamored with celebrity pregnancy as it once was before so a baby may not be the career boost as it was in the past.
Tia and Tamera Mowry famously launched a breastfeeding brand called Milky after becoming parents for the first time. Others like Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum launched maternity lines or added children clothing to their existing lines as with Stella McCartney and The Kardashians after they became a mom, respectively.
Instagram famous women shift their feeds and started featuring their babies and promoting parenting and motherhood related brands as part of their new post baby rebranding.
So at least in social media, a new baby can create opportunities.
Micarriage is a taboo among many families. It is unspoken and women who go through it suffer in silence or keep it a secret. It occurs more often than many would believe, yet women usually keep it a secret from family and friends. It certainly taints and colors one’s journey to motherhood, whether it happened in the early weeks or mid term. A woman will earnestly never be the same after suffering through one, especially she and her partner were planning for the baby they lost.
In recent years, a lot of celebrities have been open and transparent about having gone through a miscarriage.
And a lot more are being open and transparent about losses they’ve had in the past.
From many of the stars of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mithcell to Michelle Obama to Beyonce and Carrie Underwood and Gabrielle Union, openly sharing about a miscarriage or pregnancy loss is the thing to do.
Because of their influence, platform and reach, it’s awesome that these women are sharing their stories to help comfort and empathy for those who have endured it or may be unknowing about how common it is.
In the coming decade, let’s hope the trend of being relatable and real continue and we can leave behind those trends that created stress and anxiety among their followers behind.
It looks like celebrities are going more and more unconventional at their baby showers (see Kim K’s CBD Shower and Shay Mitchell‘s strip club shower for example)
Model Ashely Graham and her husband celebrating the upcoming birth of their first child together at a baby shower being described as “non traditional” because it included ear piercing, tattoo application and manicure stations.
The event took place at The Foundry in New York City which fans got a sneak peek at via guests like celebrity doula and lifestyle guru Lathan Thomas who posted photos and videos on her Instagram page and stories:
“This shower was so ? @kissthedeejay was on the 1s and 2s, you could get tattoos, ear piercings and decorate baby onesies that are being donated to families in need,” Thomas wrote on Instagram. “I was too chicken to get a tat or another ear piercing ?@Fridamom made a custom labor and delivery kit for Ashley – so adorable!!!!”
As reported by PEOPLE, the event featured traditional elements like “It’s a mom!” balloons and signs, cupcakes, candy and other usual baby shower fare.
Graham reportedly told guests in a toast that the event was “bigger than our wedding”.
“If you haven’t gotten your ears pierced or a tattoo, you have to do that.” the plus size Victoria Secret model gushed. “There’s so much food, there’s a big cake that’s bigger than the one at our wedding.”
Fun!
Congrats to Vanessa Bryant on the birth of her fourth child, another baby girl.
The wife to NBA star Kobe Bryant shared the news on Friday, June 21 via Instagram though she actually gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday, June 20, US Weekly reports.
“Our baby girl is here!!!!!!” Vanessa wrote on Friday, June 21, via Instagram. “Capri Kobe Bryant. So thankful for our newest baby blessing.”
The former Los Angeles, Lakers star and his wife announced on New Year’s Day on January 1 that they had another baby on the way with an enthusiastic Instagram reveal.
“Vanessa and I are beyond excited to announce that we are expecting another #mambacita to go along with Natalia, Gianna and Bianca,” the athlete wrote at the time. “New Year, New Baby! Baby Mamba on the Way 2019.”
The couple are parents to daughters 16-year old Natalia Diamante, 13-year old Gianna Maria-Onore and 2-year old Bianka Bella,.
The baby’s middle and last name is the same as dad’s!
It is reminiscent of Serena Williams‘ daughter who shares the same firs and last name as her dad, Alexis Olympia Ohanian, and Teyana Taylor‘s daughter Imani Shumpert Jr. who shares the same first and last name as her dad. Is this a new celebrity trend or what?
