Decade in Review: 10 Celeb Parenting Trends That Are Now Outdated

Having covered celebrity pregnancy, parenting and the “bump watch” for over a decade, I pride myself in being an institutional memory of the trends in this space.

As we close out on another decade, I’ve identified 10 trends that have come and gone from the past decade, including old ones that have faded out of style over time and new ones spearheaded by the recent popularity and usage of social media.

Let’s start with the trends that are

Outdated and going bye bye:

10. Million Dollar Deals for First Baby Photos

In 2007, Julia Roberts reportedly was the first celebrity to demand a six figure payday ($250,000) from PEOPLE magazine to get the rights to publish the first photos of her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel. OK magazine got a steal and paid merely a little over a half a million for pics of Gwen Stefanie’s 2 week old son, Kingston. OK Magazine lost their $2 million dollar bid for Britney Spear and Kevin Federline’s first baby pic to People magazine. Nicole Richie reportedly received $1M for her photo of son, Max and Christina Aguilera for her son.

With magazines, along with newspapers, losing tons of revenue as people start to rely on digital forms of media for news and information, it no longer made business sense to pay these astronomical amounts of money.

Also, with the advent of social media and more conscious celeb couples publishing their babies on Instagram for free, the less famous personalities who used to shop for first photo deals found there was no longer a market for them.

9. Pregnant Nude Covers

After Demi Moore posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991, it became a thing for stars to do the same.  Since then, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Nia Long and many more graced covers in the buff while expecting.

Soon, it became more of a quick and easy way to get publicity and attention, and eventually the public interest in them waned.

The last big photo issue was of Alanis Morissette in 2016. She did an undercover water shoot but the naked baby bump photo thing is more or less passe and not a public rosy stunt many will do.

8. The Celebrity Bounce Back

Around the same time that gossip magazines started to cover celebrity parents, we saw a lot of photos about the “bounce back”. It was as if it was a competition to see who could pop up slim and trim months or even weeks after baby.

It was ridiculous for several reasons: 1) a lot of the covers were photoshopped; 2) some of the celebs either genetically were predisposed to lose weight fast or underwent surgical procedures to quickly trim down after baby; 3) it set up a dangerous standard given that a lot of celebs have private chefs and trainers to help them lose weight fast; and 4) it sent a damaging message to women who should be concerned with safely healing from delivery and focusing on nursing and connecting with their newborns.

In any event, those magazine covers are not as common as before. In fact, a bunch of celebrity women like Chrissy Teigen, Blake Livey, Mila Kunis and others have spoken out about the ridiculous expectations on them to return to their pre-pregnancy form after baby.

The industry has gotten the message and do not sensationalize the bounce back as much as before.

7. Sponsored Baby Showers

Once upon a time, celebrities were approached by companies and brand representatives to host a baby shower for them in exchange for promotion of their products. The companies knew there were tons of promotions that came with the exposure.

Amazon.com sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower in 2018. Although the trend is dying out, over the past decade, Danielle Jonas and her husband Kevin celebrated a baby shower thrown by Fit Pregnancy magazine.

Also, Burt’s Bees was among the sponsors of Kourtney Kardashian’baby shower when she was pregnant with daughter Penelope. Similarly, Le Bebe CoCo  was among Kristin Cavallari‘s baby shower sponsors. Target hosted Beverley Mitchell’s baby shower. Several liquor companies provided the libations for cocktails served up at Love and Hip Hop’s  Yandy Smith‘s baby shower.

Jaime King enjoyed some fab brand goodies at her shower.  Ecoya‘s Sweet Pea & Jasmine home fragrance collection, a pink Quinny Buzz Special Edition stroller, a mamaRoo baby swing, a pink Hoppop Bath tub, a pink Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket, a Timi and Leslie diaper bag and a 5 ft. custom-made giraffe by Melissa and Doug all contributed to Victoria Beckham‘s baby shower.

Finally, Belly Bandit sponsored Jewel’s baby shower.

While this trend continues, audiences do not respond as favorable to them any longer and the comment section on sponsored baby showers are sometimes filled with negative commentary from fans who want less rich new parents to be showered with the gifts.

SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN

6. Hiding Children’s Face in Social Media

We famously were contacted by Stella McCartney’s reps over 10 years ago to remove paparazzi photos of her traveling with her children in the street posted on the blog. A few years later, Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard launched a campaign in 2014 to get a California state law passed to protect children of celebs from paparazzi. Others have done the same.

Eva Mendes and Kerry Washington do not show their kids in public or social media at all.

In the social media era, a few refuse to feature their children in social media or they hide their faces when they do: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, brit star Rochelle Humes, Kylie Jenner  and Jenna Dewan all have done that in the past or continue to.

5. Celebrity Kids Instagram Accounts

On the flip side, several less famous stars realize the tremendous money making and marketing opportunities in giving their children their own account and branding their name and fame from birth.

It’s a pretty recent phenomenon, but starting with , DJ Khaled who launched an Instagram account  for his son Asadh in 2016 when Baby Khaled was just one month old, many celebs have created accounts for their kids as well.

Little  Asadh now has 1.8M followers, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade‘s 1 year old daughter Kaavia James boasts 1M followers and Michael Phelps’ 3-year old son Boomer Phelps  now has 665K followers of his Instagram page.

I think the youngest baby to get an Insta was Cali Clay Shephard, daughter of model Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard whose account was opened at just 16 days old.

This is a trend that is not getting old but is growing as more realize the revenue generating options that open up with having a massive engaged following.

4.  Hiding Pregnancy to Late Trimester

From my memory in covering this topic, I think that Kylie Jenner, Anna Kournokova and a few others did the best job at hiding their pregnancies for all 9 months. It’s pretty hard to hide from the paparazzi and shield their bump during events, filming and promoting a project.

But in 2011, Evangeline Lilly managed to almost completely disguise her entire pregnancy until papps found her in Hawaii while almost done gestating her first child. Jennifer Lopez and Adele managed to hide their respective pregnancies for over 5 months.

Given how common miscarriage is, a lot of women, whether a celebrity or not, wait until the latest time possible when they feel comfortable that they will be able to carry their baby to term to announce baby news.

Hiding an early pregnancy while building a career in front of the public is not easy to do as Cardi B learned but it can be done and the more private or celebs are learning from others how to do it.

3. Launch New Career/Re invigorate Career

Also during the height of the interest in celeb baby bumps, a lot of stars who were formerly very popular but whose fame had waned were able to reinvigorate their respective careers after having a baby.

For example, Kim Karadashian West once lamented that she saw a spike in paparazzi photos whenever she is expecting.

About 10 years ago, Mommyish published a gallery of celebrities who became more famous after becoming pregnant or becoming a mom.

It is not clear is the general public is as enamored with celebrity pregnancy as it once was before so a baby may not be the career boost as it was in the past.

2. Launch a Maternity or Parenting Related Brand

Tia and Tamera Mowry famously launched a breastfeeding brand called Milky after becoming parents for the first time.  Others like Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum launched maternity lines or added children clothing to their existing lines as with Stella McCartney and The Kardashians after they became a mom, respectively.

Instagram famous women shift their feeds and started featuring their babies and promoting parenting and motherhood related brands as part of their new post baby rebranding.

So at least in social media, a new baby can create opportunities.

1. Being Open and Honest about Miscarriage

Micarriage is a taboo among many families. It is unspoken and women who go through it suffer in silence or keep it a secret. It occurs more often than many would believe, yet women usually keep it a secret from family and friends. It certainly taints and colors one’s journey to motherhood, whether it happened in the early weeks or mid term. A woman will earnestly never be the same after suffering through one, especially she and her partner were planning for the baby they lost.

In recent years, a lot of celebrities have been open and transparent about having gone through a miscarriage.

And a lot more are being open and transparent about losses they’ve had in the past.

From many of the stars of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mithcell to Michelle Obama to Beyonce and Carrie Underwood and Gabrielle Union, openly sharing about a miscarriage or pregnancy loss is the thing to do.

Because of their influence, platform and reach, it’s awesome that these women are sharing their stories to help comfort and empathy for those who have endured it or may be unknowing about how common it is.

In the coming decade, let’s hope the trend of being relatable and real continue and we can leave behind those trends that created stress and anxiety among their followers behind.

Celeb Moms at the E! People’s Choice Awards {PHOTOS}

The women of Keeping Up With The Kardashians took home the People’s Choice Award for best reality show and Khloe won for Best Reality TV Star beating out fellow mom Kandi Burruss of the Real Housewives of Atlanta show of the Bravo TV franchise. She didn’t realize it and failed to thank her fans for voting for her because the show combined the wins in one presentation.

She took to Twitter to defend herself when a fan called her out for not acknowledging the honor.

The Hate Meghan Markle Gets

This week, I was in awe to see all of the British and American press making a big deal over the fact that Serena Williams, Amal Clooney and Gayle King threw Meghan Markle a baby shower which some are estimating cost close to a $500,000, when you consider the security and private jet to NYC from the UK and back.

Some are discussing whether it was too lavish.

My thoughts: first, no one knows if that estimated number of the cost is entirely accurate.

Second: So what?

I’ve been covering celebrity baby showers for as long as this blog has existed, which is over 10 years, and I do not recall anytime that news and gossip outlets discussed the cost of a celebrity baby shower.

Granted, I do understand that baby showers are uncommon among the British, so any shower at any cost may seem exorbitant. However, Kensington Palace had to come out and state that Markle paid for the cost of travel and her stay herself.

They may have pointed out how lavish they were but none reported on the cost, to my recollection.

Let’s take a look at other celeb showers because, what does one expect from people who are rich and/or wealthy and have resources and funds to throw lavish affairs?

For example, Cardi B‘s shower featured a 16-foot topiary floral wall, room entrance ways that resembled a 6-car subway train, and several rooms draped in 26,000 pink and white flowers.

Vanessa Bryant and Kobe Bryant‘s shower featured a floral wall.

In June 2016, Nicky Hilton had a baby shower at The Towers at the top of  the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City.

Kim Kardashian had what looks like a dozen cherry blossom trees in her baby shower venue for baby Chicago and her sister Kylie Jenner had an elaborate outdoor baby shower for baby Stormi.

Khloe Kardashian had tons of pink roses, topiary and florals at her shower.

Here are some snaps from baby showers Other celebs had:

Ciara

Naya Riviera

Adrienne Bosh

Tia Mowry Hardrict

Tamera Mowry-Housley

Jessica Simpson

Andy Cohen

Honestly, I think this young woman is getting more criticism than her predecessor non-royal wife, Duchess Catherine, Kate Middleton.

It reminds me of the criticism Michelle Obama received to the cost of her clothing, hullabaloo which was not similarly made over the cost of Barabara or Nancy Bush or Hillary Clinton‘s First Lady clothing prior.

The Real’s Adrienne Bailon Thought She Could Time Her 1st Pregnancy Around Show’s Production Schedule

The Real co-host Adrienne Bailon, a newlywed, shared how she tried to time her first pregnancy around her show’s production schedule so she wouldn’t miss an entire season while home with the baby after giving birth.

During a session of “Girl Talk” segment of the show this week, she gave a blow-by-blow of her very  unrealistic plan and how her friends and co-hosts helped her realize she was going about it all wrong.

“Ok. I want to have a baby. If I could get pregnant between this window, then I could give birth,” Bailon, who married Gospel singer and producer Israel Houghton in 2016, shared on the daily panel talk show. “That’s not how it works and it didn’t work out that way.”

She concluded that with the help and encouragement of her co-hosts, she learned to deliver it all up to the hands of a higher being.

“Now because you guys have made me feel so comfortable, and you guys are always contantly encouraging me” she continued while addressing fellow panelists Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jeanie Mai and Lonnie Love, who told her. “Girl, let God has his way and it’s gonna happen when it happens.”

She acknowledged that the stress could have hindered her success and it made her stop.

“It was so stressful,” she recalled giving up on trying altogether when the baby didn’t happen on the production timeline she had planned. “We even took some time off and were like, ‘aw man it didn’t work out the way I thought it would. Guess I’ll try again next year.”

Love assured her that the show isn’t going anywhere and neither is Bailon.

“I want my little munchkin to come, so you keep on,” Love egged the former Cheetah Girl. “Do it!”

That’s so nice and nurturing. I love these women!

Halloween 2018: Superheroes Were Celeb Families’ Top Choice

Here are some additional amazing celebrity family Halloween costumes from this year that rocked! And one thing I’ve noticed while pulling this together using their respective Instagram photo shares is that the Super Heroes theme was the preferred costume.

On top of that list, about 4 families did the Incredibles this years. In years past, Mariah Carey and The Baldwins among other families had gone with that group costume option. Here is a quick run down of other fabulous costumes including some amazing over-the top ones that are not super heroes but are from popular movies and other pop culture figures.

Adrienne and Chris Bosh and family as The Incredibles

Fergie and her son Axl were are super heroes Power Rangers

Kevin Hart and family as Minions

Kandi Burruss and family also as Super heroes

Vanessa Lachey and her kids were also The Incredibles.

Singer Melanie Fiona and her family were also The Incredibles

And finally so was Cyn Santanna and fam

Monica Brown and her family are usually on the top 5 list when it comes to Halloween costumes and so to no surprise her daughter Laiyah Brown‘s Edward Scissorhands is amazing@

No doubt Ayesha Curry as Snow White and her 4-month old son Canon as a Dwarf were the cutest!

Not a family costume but here is Marcus Scribner as Erik Killmonger, Tracee Ellis Ross as Nakia, and Anthony Anderson as T’Challa from Black Panther

More Superheroes from Tia Mowry, Cory Hardrict and family

Her sister Tamera Mowry-Housley and her daughter were lady bugs with husband Adam Housley as a cave man and their son Aden a dinosaur.

Celebrity Halloween 2018 Costumes (PHOTOS *UPDATED*)

Every year, celebrities go above and beyond to give superb portrayals for Halloween. This year did not disappoint. Here is a quick rundown of my faves including some from our Bellyitch Bumpwatch alums like Ciara, Beyonce, Alicia Keys, Jaime King and more.

Kylie Jenner recreated the Barbie in a box. It was one of several costumes she wore this season. She went as a Butterfly in a mommy and me photo with her daughter and as a Victoria Secret Angel group costume with her sisters. (see below)

The winner might be Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner killed as Gomez and Morticia Addams complete with Thing on his shoulder! Best hands down in my opinion this year!

oh I think Heidi Klum as Princess Fiona and Tom Kaulitz as Shrek as  is up there too!

Alicia Keys went over the top but in a good way as a Ninja. I mean, she had her entire costume as part of a movie poster and all with the credits including her children and husband.

Beyonce paid homage and tribute to Lil Kim last  year and this year, she went with another icon: Toni Braxton. She dressed as the pop crooner’s cover album for “Another Sad Love Song.

Actress, former model Jaime King dolled it up as Joan of Arc at Just Jared’s Halloween party presented by Carls Jr.

Ciara‘s costume portrayal of Black Panther heroine Nakia from Black Panther is 10X Levels Up! She did Wakanda right!

Crazy Rich Asians actor Harry Shum Jr. was boss as Eric Draven from the 1994 film The Crow,!

I wanted to go as Ariana Grande this year but I don’t think anyone did her better than Kourtney Kardashian did!

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend killed as Queen Elizabeth the II and Prince Phillip.

Winnie Harlowe as RuPaul

Bella Hadid and the Weeknd dress as Beetlejuice and Lydia when going to Heidi Klum’s Halloween party on October 31, 2018 in New York City. (Photo by Jackson Lee/GC Images)

Padma Lakshmi at Heidi Klum’s 19th Annual Halloween Party as The Black Swan

Kat Graham at Heidi Klum’s 19th Annual Halloween Party presented by Party City and SVEDKA Vodka  (Photo by Noam Galai/Getty Images for Heidi Klum)

Jessica Simpson and Eric Johnson as Danny DeVito and Arnold Schwazzeneger in “Twins”

Kelly Clarkson as a penguin and Jennifer Hudson as Catwoman

The Kardashian/Jenner girls were blessed to have Victoria’s Secret loan them actual angel wings so they can dress as true Angels for Halloween.

My fave is Kourt’s because she is tiny and the oldest

Bethenny Frankel could have joined the sisters because she too dressed as a Vicky Sec angel this year.

The Ladies of The Real TV talk show dressed up as iconic TV talk show hosts. Tamera Mowry-Housley was Tyra Banks. Jeannie Mae went as Ellen Degeneres. Loni Love dressed as Oprah Winfrey and Adrienne Houghton as Sally Jessy Raphael.

The TODAY show traditionally go all out for Halloween. This  year, I was thoroughly impressed by Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer dressed as Marty McFly and Doc Brown From Back to the Future.

Kelly Ripa is usually a show stopper wearing a variety of looks and costumes each Halloween with her hosts throughout the years, Regis, Michael Strahan and now with Ryan Secrest. They did a bunch of 80s TV show characters this year. She did it up as as Vicki the Robot From Small Wonder.

The two of them portrayed Jeannie and Major Nelson From I Dream of Jeannie.

And one of my fave shows: Laverne and Shirley‘s Laverne DeFazio and Shirley Feeney.

Seacrest came out in a small model car like the one Ricky Stratton From Silver Spoons owned and drove in the opening sequence to that show.

Kelly Ripa, Ryan Seacrest, and Art More as a modern twist on the Friends Cast.

I loved Disney Channel stars Jenna Ortega and Asher Angel as Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson. I asked my husband to go as this duo to a Halloween party we were going to and he said no. Boo!

Monica is another celebrity that puts a lot of work into her Halloween costume every single year. She dressed as Johnny Depp‘s portrayal of the Mad Hatter.

Sarah Michelle Gellar looked hot as as Harley Quinn.

Adrienne Bosh could barely be made out in her Halloween Insta share as a Ghoulish Ghost.

One of my faves because of how close to the original it was is Madison Pettis from Nickelodeon‘s Cory in the House as Coachella Beyonce

Also loved Gwen Stefani as Sally From Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Speaking of which! Gabriel Union did a great job dressing as Stefani in No Doubt’s “Just a Girl” video before heading out to her birthday party.

No. Doubt. @gwenstefani

Expecting Remy Ma and Papoose Hit Up ‘The Real’ to Talk All Things Baby

Expecting rapper Remy Ma and her husband Papoose hit up The Real Talk to talk all things baby, pregnancy and parenting. The couple, who is expecting their first child together after suffering a miscarriage, also shared that they plan to have more children.

When Tamera Mowry-Housley asked them about it, the Love And Hip Hop star gave a detailed reply that included insights on her fertility struggles and successes:

“Ok, so when we did IVF, we did two cycles. The first cycle, we only got one egg and I was nervous. I was like, let’s just do it again so we’ll have more. We got one again the second time, so we had two. One was a boy, one was a girl, but I didn’t want to know which one. Whichever one was first, put that one back first and then the other one. So I told [Papoose], if he behaves and doesn’t spoil the golden child like he’s planning to do, we have a good baby and he accepts my nanny stuff and all of that, maybe somewhere around 2020, we’ll do the other one.”

The couple are planning to star and debut their very own spin off reality TV show called Remy and Papoose: Meet the Mackies. They also released a new song about their impending arrival called “The Golden Child”, a term they’ve been using to describe the baby they conceived after some struggles. They performed it on the show.
