Instagram Trolls Body Shamed Chrissy Teigen’s Baby Bump into Hiding…but Not Forever

chrissy and john legend

Chrissy Teigen got in her feelings recently when she shared her first bump photo on Instagram and got roasted in the comments. “Somebody is early to the party” she captioned her Instagram photo. Teigen and her husband singer/songwriter John Legend are expecting their first child after years of struggling to conceive.

Somebody is early to the party ???

A photo posted by chrissy teigen (@chrissyteigen) on

Most of her followers responded to how “big” her tiny bump was.  Some news outlets ran with stories suggesting she was pregnant with twins or triplets because she had “popped” so early in her pregnancy given that 13-week pregnancies usually don’t show many signs of a bump. The critical feedback led the model to tweet that she would no longer be talking about her pregnancy.

She also confirmed that she is only carrying one child.

But even she recognized that she is getting a bit back from her sharp tongue in the past when she used to constantly engage in Twitter beef with her fans. It’s Karma, she tweeted later, seemingly insinuating she was over the hurt feelings and admitting that she used to poke fun of round body parts of her friends plenty before getting pregnant.

Yeah, we don’t think she will resist giving up some bump love along the next few months. Ignore the haters, girl.  Embrace the positive feedback which usually outnumbers the critics but always get outshined by the naysayers.

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are Expecting Their First Child

john legend and chrissy teigen pregnant

Finally! After lots of fertility struggles, model Chrissy Tiegen and her husband singer-songwriter John Legend are finally expecting their first child.

The outspoken TV co-host announced the news on her Instagram account today.

“John and I are so happy to announce that we are pregnant 🙂 As many of you know, we’ve been trying to have a baby for a while now. It hasn’t been easy, but we kept trying because we can’t wait to bring our first child into the world and grow our family,” she captioned a black and white photo of she and john on a couch. “We’re so excited that it’s finally happening. Thank you for all your love and well wishes. I look forward to all the belly touching! Xx”

During a taping of Tyra Banks‘ new panel talk show, FABLife, in September, Tiegen revealed that she and Legend had been struggling to have children.

“I will say, honestly, John and I are having trouble,” Teigen confessed, while cluing everyone in that they had been to fertility doctors. “We would have kids five, six years ago if it’d happened,” she added. “But my gosh, it’s been a process!”

She also expressed frustration at being asked constantly when she would have a baby when she was trying but not being successful.

“So, anytime somebody asks me if I’m going to have kids, I’m like, ‘One day, you’re going to ask that to the wrong girl who’s really struggling, and it’s going to be really hurtful to them. And I hate that. So, I hate it. Stop asking me!'” She said.

She thanked all those who supported her after that big reveal.

“Regarding the IVF business, I have never gotten so many kind, encouraging words in my life,” Teigen tweeted. “You guys are awesome and appreciated.”

Yay! Congrats!

The 5 Clues Fans Used to Determine Nicki Minaj was Pregnant Before She Announced

Congratulations are in order to rapper Nicki Minaj  who is expecting her first child with her husband Kenneth Petty as she announced her news on her Instagram yesterday to the surprise of none of the Internet sleuths who had already recognized all the clues that she was pregnant, beginning with speculation last month when she posted a curious photo trying to conceal her bump in high rise bikini bottoms.

“Love. Marriage. Baby carriage. Overflowing with excitement & gratitude. Thank you all for the well wishes,” Minaj captioned the third in a set of formal colorful maternity photos where she is sitting on a pink couch. The last  of the photos is her draped in white in an editorial shot made to look angelic, taken by famed photographer David LaChappelle.

Part of being a celebrity woman of child bearing years is that you have people constantly speculating about whether or not you are pregnant. It can frustrating especially if you had been actively trying but keep having to see and respond or ignore rumors published in the tabloids or social media. Model Chrissy Teigen, actress Gabrielle Union and many others suffered with infertility while batting down insenstive demands from people asking when they would be having their first chilld.

However, when the moment that a star does get pregnant, she then has the challenge that many women have of trying to keep it private for at least the first three months when the risk for miscarriage is the highest. After the first trimester, the chances of that mom-to-be carrying a baby full term and having a healthy labor and delivery shoots up exponentialy.

Still, sometimes the public guesses right because there are tell tale signs and Minaj displayed them ALL!!!

After the Super Bass performer made her announcement, many fans said in the comment sections under news reports that the news was of no surprise to them based on the various clues that exist when a woman in the spotlight is hiding her pregnancy:

1. She only shared head shots in social media

For women who famously show off their fab bods at every chance they get, seeing them suddenly stick to posting head shots inscial meida is a dead giveaway that they are trying to perhaps hide weight gain in the tummy area and elsewhere.

For the weeks leading up to the announcement the Anaconda rapper shared photos of her self performing songs with only her head in the shot.

2. She wore clothes that covered her belly.

Getty

You can hide your body by carefully selecting what you post but unless you plan to live a hermit life or escape to another country, then there is a high liklihood that the paparazzi will spot you out and about.

When Kylie Jenner was secrety pregnant with her daughter Stormi, fans speculated her condition because she wore baggy clothes. Her sister, Khloe Kardashian, revealed that she used an A-line coat to hide her bump until she announced the news that she was expecting a baby.

If you are pregnant during Award season, as Cardi B was, you can get your stylist to design outfits that creatively conceal your bump.

Most recently, currently pregant stars, actress Sophie Turner and model Gigi Hadid were spotted in super baggy clothes and reported frequently as being pregnant in the gossip press. The oversized PJs were a dead give away Hadid and boyfriend Zayn Malik were expecting their first child together even before she confirmed her news last week.

3. She drops out of public light

Similarly, it is always suspicious when women who usually crave the spotlight drop out of the public eye. That too is a signal they may be secretly expecting.  On the real, Minaj literally told the world she was baby making when she quit music via Twitter last September to start her family.  But because she had quit Twitter before after having beefs with her ex Meek Mill, rap nemesis Remy Ma, not a lot of people took the announcement seriously.

The quarantine period was very convenient for Jessica Biel to lay low and incubate a whole other person. She and her musician/producer husband Justin Timberlake reportedly welcomed their second child recently and no one knew. They tore a page out of Ana Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias‘ book when those two had a whole set of twins on the download back in 2017.

Some have tried to keep the secret for the total nine months and have come close.

Evangeline Lily and Jennifer Hudson got caught by paparazzi both around 8 months pregnant. They were in remote places where there is no Hollywood scrutiny but still got busted.

Others succeed.

In 2018,  How to Get Away with Murder star Karla Souzaand in 2014, Ozark star Laura Linney announced the birth of their first child, respectively, after the baby was already born.

4. She Subconsciouly (or her partner) Touches her Belly

Getty

Last month, Minaj gave yet another clue when she showed a video of Petty rubbing her belly. In other years, the maternal subtle cradle of the tummy is a sign a woman is expecting. It’s a subcouncous and natural maneuver which is a sign.

5. Her face looks fuller

Weight gain is a sign of pregnancy and even for women who manage to not pack on the pounds, a dead giveaway is a fuller rounder face. Many fans speculated and noticed that in the video for Trollz with Ta, Minaj face looked significantly more cherubic than usual.

Well there you have it. If you are a woman in the lime light and seek to totally hide your pregnancy from the media and the public, avoid doing any of the above. Good luck!

Your Guide to Celebrity LIVE Streams During COVID-19 Quarantine

Chrissy Teigen and John Legend attend the 2020 Vanity Fair Oscar Party hosted by Radhika Jones at Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Feb. 9, 2020 in Beverly Hills, Calif. (Photo by Rich Fury/VF20/Getty Images for Vanity Fair)

During this coronavirus outbreak, we have seen a lot of celebrities take to their social media to connect with their fans.

Some have had misses, like Vanessa Hodgens who downplayed the seriousness of people losing their lives on an impromptu IG story and others like DJ D-Nice have hit it out the park by playing three nights in a row for up to 9 hours at a time entertaining world including many celebs like Mariah Carey, Paul MccCartney, Michelle Obama and everyone in between, gaining up to a million Instagram followers in the process.

Debbie Allen is hosting online dance classes called #dancewithdebbieallen.

Personally, I’ve benefited from some of these impromptu exchanges. I took in singer Miguel’s one hour Instastory Live jam session and was entertained by Cardi B‘s funny share that Brooklyn DJ iMarkkeyz turned into a chart topping hit song!

Couples have gotten into it to. John Legend played hits on the piano as his wife Chrissy Teigen jammed along, and later they played tunes while cooking. Country legend Keith Urban crooned to tunes as wife Nicole Kidman danced in the background.

While Tom Hanks and actor wife Rita Wilson recovered from the disease, Wilson rapped to Naughy By Nature‘s “Hip Hop Hooray“.

Some are branding their appearances and making gigs out of them. D-Nice’s started out as “Homeschool” and Chris Martin‘s regular sets are being called #TogetherAtHome.

Most of these shows have been free but leave it to enterprising soul singer  Erykah Badu to elevate the game with her “Quarantine Concert Series“, LIVE from her bedroom. She charged $1 for a stream and her production quality was A+ and involved more than one camera and camera angles. She sold merch and really converted all those stuck at home into a nice profitable gig.

Per Vibe magazine :

The Grammy winner also took to Instagram Live to explain some of the politics of being signed to a record label, and why she’s charging an entry fee. “We rely on our live shows and all of our live shows got canceled indefinitely,” said Badu.

“We’re not rich people, we just play rich people on TV. Some of us only have one form of income and that’s [live] shows. I wanted to create another revenue of income and you are helping me do that in a big way because this is an experiment. There’s nobody in between me and that dollar.”

Badu’s setlist will be handpicked by logged-in fans who vote during the stream.

Academy Awards: A Visual History of Bumps on the Oscar Red Carpet

Last year, 2019 was no different in witnessing expecting women grace the red carpet at the annual Academy Awards red carpet. Kyrsten Ritter, the  Jessica Jones star debuted her baby bump at the 2019 Oscars cradling her stomach on the red carpet while wearing a lacy maroon gown next to boyfriend Adam Granduciel.
In 2016, A glowing Emily Blunt went pink and jewels in 2016 while waiting for the birth of her second child with husband, John Krazinski. In 2017, Ciara looked regal in crimson velour with a jeweled choker at the annual Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2017 while carrying her and husband Russell Wilson‘s first child together.

Also that year, Lipsync Battle host Chrissy Teigen radiated in a Marchesa gown while expecting her second child with husband John Legend. In 2012, Adele welcomed her first child, son Angelo, and the next year, she won an Oscar for Best Song for the and explained having to express breast milk in the bathroom to relieve her engorged breast. The “Rolling in the Deep” singer missed out on having to be heavily pregnant on the red carpet like several of her fellow A-listers in year’s past. Oscar has played host to several heavily pregnant In 1992, Susan Sarandon was almost due with her son Miles  whom she welcomed (with then-beau Tim Robbins) when she was nominated for her role in Thelma & Louise at age 47. (She didn’t win but was nominated 5 times and won Best Actress in 1996 for her role in Dead Man Walking.) In 1998, Glen Close was 8-months pregnant when nominated for Fatal Attraction. In 2000, four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening was nominated for her role in American Beauty at almost 8 months pregnant with her fourth child with husband Warren Beatty, daughter Ella.
Catherine Zeta Jones with Oscar
In 2003, Catherine Zeta-Jones accepted the award for Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Chicago while almost full term with daughter Cary with husband . In 2004, Marcia Gay-Harden was nominated for her role in Mystic River, while pregnant with twins! In 2006, Rachel Weisz was 7-months preggers with her and then-boyfriend Darren Aronofsky when she won the Best Supporting Actress trophy for The Constant Gardner.
Jessia alba oscars
In 2008, while expecting daughter Honor, Jessica Alba shone in a purple Marchesa gown at the Oscars.

In 2011, Black Swan star Natalie Portman was 6 months pregnant with her and her choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied,  first son, Aleph when she accepted her Best Actress award.
In 2013, while still married to Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan wore a black lace Rachel Roy gown to the Oscars while very preggers.

In 2014, although Kerry Washington was not nominated for an Oscar, she did attend, cradling the baby bump from her first child, Isabelle.
Olivia Wilde at oscars
Also that year, Olivia Wilde walked the red carpet in a black Valentino gownwhile a couple months away from welcoming her first child, Otis, withher husband, fellow actor, Jason Sudeikis
That same year, Chris Hemsworth ’s wife, Elsa Pataky  in 2014 wore blue sequins but maybe made a fashion mistake of wearing it under and not on top of her belly.

Decade in Review: 10 Celeb Parenting Trends That Are Now Outdated

Having covered celebrity pregnancy, parenting and the “bump watch” for over a decade, I pride myself in being an institutional memory of the trends in this space.

As we close out on another decade, I’ve identified 10 trends that have come and gone from the past decade, including old ones that have faded out of style over time and new ones spearheaded by the recent popularity and usage of social media.

Let’s start with the trends that are

Outdated and going bye bye:

10. Million Dollar Deals for First Baby Photos

In 2007, Julia Roberts reportedly was the first celebrity to demand a six figure payday ($250,000) from PEOPLE magazine to get the rights to publish the first photos of her twins Phinnaeus and Hazel. OK magazine got a steal and paid merely a little over a half a million for pics of Gwen Stefanie’s 2 week old son, Kingston. OK Magazine lost their $2 million dollar bid for Britney Spear and Kevin Federline’s first baby pic to People magazine. Nicole Richie reportedly received $1M for her photo of son, Max and Christina Aguilera for her son.

With magazines, along with newspapers, losing tons of revenue as people start to rely on digital forms of media for news and information, it no longer made business sense to pay these astronomical amounts of money.

Also, with the advent of social media and more conscious celeb couples publishing their babies on Instagram for free, the less famous personalities who used to shop for first photo deals found there was no longer a market for them.

9. Pregnant Nude Covers

After Demi Moore posed on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine in 1991, it became a thing for stars to do the same.  Since then, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey, Nia Long and many more graced covers in the buff while expecting.

Soon, it became more of a quick and easy way to get publicity and attention, and eventually the public interest in them waned.

The last big photo issue was of Alanis Morissette in 2016. She did an undercover water shoot but the naked baby bump photo thing is more or less passe and not a public rosy stunt many will do.

8. The Celebrity Bounce Back

Around the same time that gossip magazines started to cover celebrity parents, we saw a lot of photos about the “bounce back”. It was as if it was a competition to see who could pop up slim and trim months or even weeks after baby.

It was ridiculous for several reasons: 1) a lot of the covers were photoshopped; 2) some of the celebs either genetically were predisposed to lose weight fast or underwent surgical procedures to quickly trim down after baby; 3) it set up a dangerous standard given that a lot of celebs have private chefs and trainers to help them lose weight fast; and 4) it sent a damaging message to women who should be concerned with safely healing from delivery and focusing on nursing and connecting with their newborns.

In any event, those magazine covers are not as common as before. In fact, a bunch of celebrity women like Chrissy Teigen, Blake Livey, Mila Kunis and others have spoken out about the ridiculous expectations on them to return to their pre-pregnancy form after baby.

The industry has gotten the message and do not sensationalize the bounce back as much as before.

7. Sponsored Baby Showers

Once upon a time, celebrities were approached by companies and brand representatives to host a baby shower for them in exchange for promotion of their products. The companies knew there were tons of promotions that came with the exposure.

Amazon.com sponsored Khloe Kardashian’s baby shower in 2018. Although the trend is dying out, over the past decade, Danielle Jonas and her husband Kevin celebrated a baby shower thrown by Fit Pregnancy magazine.

Also, Burt’s Bees was among the sponsors of Kourtney Kardashian’baby shower when she was pregnant with daughter Penelope. Similarly, Le Bebe CoCo  was among Kristin Cavallari‘s baby shower sponsors. Target hosted Beverley Mitchell’s baby shower. Several liquor companies provided the libations for cocktails served up at Love and Hip Hop’s  Yandy Smith‘s baby shower.

Jaime King enjoyed some fab brand goodies at her shower.  Ecoya‘s Sweet Pea & Jasmine home fragrance collection, a pink Quinny Buzz Special Edition stroller, a mamaRoo baby swing, a pink Hoppop Bath tub, a pink Little Giraffe Luxe Blanket, a Timi and Leslie diaper bag and a 5 ft. custom-made giraffe by Melissa and Doug all contributed to Victoria Beckham‘s baby shower.

Finally, Belly Bandit sponsored Jewel’s baby shower.

While this trend continues, audiences do not respond as favorable to them any longer and the comment section on sponsored baby showers are sometimes filled with negative commentary from fans who want less rich new parents to be showered with the gifts.

SOCIAL MEDIA DRIVEN

6. Hiding Children’s Face in Social Media

We famously were contacted by Stella McCartney’s reps over 10 years ago to remove paparazzi photos of her traveling with her children in the street posted on the blog. A few years later, Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard launched a campaign in 2014 to get a California state law passed to protect children of celebs from paparazzi. Others have done the same.

Eva Mendes and Kerry Washington do not show their kids in public or social media at all.

In the social media era, a few refuse to feature their children in social media or they hide their faces when they do: Zoe Saldana, Beyonce, brit star Rochelle Humes, Kylie Jenner  and Jenna Dewan all have done that in the past or continue to.

5. Celebrity Kids Instagram Accounts

On the flip side, several less famous stars realize the tremendous money making and marketing opportunities in giving their children their own account and branding their name and fame from birth.

It’s a pretty recent phenomenon, but starting with , DJ Khaled who launched an Instagram account  for his son Asadh in 2016 when Baby Khaled was just one month old, many celebs have created accounts for their kids as well.

Little  Asadh now has 1.8M followers, Gabrielle Union and Dwayne Wade‘s 1 year old daughter Kaavia James boasts 1M followers and Michael Phelps’ 3-year old son Boomer Phelps  now has 665K followers of his Instagram page.

I think the youngest baby to get an Insta was Cali Clay Shephard, daughter of model Chanel Iman and Sterling Shepard whose account was opened at just 16 days old.

This is a trend that is not getting old but is growing as more realize the revenue generating options that open up with having a massive engaged following.

4.  Hiding Pregnancy to Late Trimester

From my memory in covering this topic, I think that Kylie Jenner, Anna Kournokova and a few others did the best job at hiding their pregnancies for all 9 months. It’s pretty hard to hide from the paparazzi and shield their bump during events, filming and promoting a project.

But in 2011, Evangeline Lilly managed to almost completely disguise her entire pregnancy until papps found her in Hawaii while almost done gestating her first child. Jennifer Lopez and Adele managed to hide their respective pregnancies for over 5 months.

Given how common miscarriage is, a lot of women, whether a celebrity or not, wait until the latest time possible when they feel comfortable that they will be able to carry their baby to term to announce baby news.

Hiding an early pregnancy while building a career in front of the public is not easy to do as Cardi B learned but it can be done and the more private or celebs are learning from others how to do it.

3. Launch New Career/Re invigorate Career

Also during the height of the interest in celeb baby bumps, a lot of stars who were formerly very popular but whose fame had waned were able to reinvigorate their respective careers after having a baby.

For example, Kim Karadashian West once lamented that she saw a spike in paparazzi photos whenever she is expecting.

About 10 years ago, Mommyish published a gallery of celebrities who became more famous after becoming pregnant or becoming a mom.

It is not clear is the general public is as enamored with celebrity pregnancy as it once was before so a baby may not be the career boost as it was in the past.

2. Launch a Maternity or Parenting Related Brand

Tia and Tamera Mowry famously launched a breastfeeding brand called Milky after becoming parents for the first time.  Others like Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum and Jessica Simpson, Heidi Klum launched maternity lines or added children clothing to their existing lines as with Stella McCartney and The Kardashians after they became a mom, respectively.

Instagram famous women shift their feeds and started featuring their babies and promoting parenting and motherhood related brands as part of their new post baby rebranding.

So at least in social media, a new baby can create opportunities.

1. Being Open and Honest about Miscarriage

Micarriage is a taboo among many families. It is unspoken and women who go through it suffer in silence or keep it a secret. It occurs more often than many would believe, yet women usually keep it a secret from family and friends. It certainly taints and colors one’s journey to motherhood, whether it happened in the early weeks or mid term. A woman will earnestly never be the same after suffering through one, especially she and her partner were planning for the baby they lost.

In recent years, a lot of celebrities have been open and transparent about having gone through a miscarriage.

And a lot more are being open and transparent about losses they’ve had in the past.

From many of the stars of BravoTV‘s Real Housewives of Atlanta to Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mithcell to Michelle Obama to Beyonce and Carrie Underwood and Gabrielle Union, openly sharing about a miscarriage or pregnancy loss is the thing to do.

Because of their influence, platform and reach, it’s awesome that these women are sharing their stories to help comfort and empathy for those who have endured it or may be unknowing about how common it is.

In the coming decade, let’s hope the trend of being relatable and real continue and we can leave behind those trends that created stress and anxiety among their followers behind.

VIRAL: ‘Stop Asking Women When are They Getting Pregnant’ Sign

An Instagram post by Toronto, Canada-based Event Planner Barbara Nkansah went viral and has been re-shared because it simply states: “Stop Asking Women When are They Getting Pregnant”.

In it, the Ghanaian-Canadian shares the hurt of being newly married and having to endure probing questions and insensitive remarks from well-meaning family and friends.

“I remember being newly married and the first thing people started doing instead of greeting me was look right at my belly,” she shared. “Then when they noticed I was not pregnant, the look of confusion following ‘oh you’re not pregnant yet?’ would be their conversation starter.

“I will never forget when just after 3 months of marriage church service ended and a member in the church who saw me yelled at the top of her lungs in front of everyone saying ‘BARBARA YOU’RE STILL NOT PREGNANT YET. WHEN WILL YOU GET PREGNANT? YOU’RE TAKING TOO LONG.'”

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs_Fy2Jg1K5/

The statistics are jarring.

One in 8 couples have a hard time getting pregnant and at least 1 in 4 will experience a pregnancy loss.

People who are trying to conceive are fed up and would like you to stop asking them when they are going to have children or even worse, “why don’t they have children.”

In the celebrity world, Gabrielle Union and Chrissy Teigen recalled being asked this question constantly because they were with their spouses for several years without producing children and people just couldn’t stop asking a very personal, imposing and insensitive question.

Little did they know that each couple were indeed trying but failing at it.

Please stop asking women (AND MEN!) when they are having kids or, even worse, why they don’t have children. ⁣

I remember the words of Assistant Professor Rondrea Danielle from Bethune-Cookman College on Facebook last year:

“Getting pregnant is hard.

Sustaining pregnancy is hard.

Giving birth is hard.

Raising a baby is hard.

So asking folks why they don’t have kids is both inconsiderate and insensitive (it also isn’t your business), and it needs to stop now.

We have no idea how much women go through to get pregnant and then bring a baby into the world.”

Conduct a Google Search and you’ll encounter dozens of articles from women and lifestyle and advice sites about this very topic and also demanding that they not be asked the question when they gain weight.

Phew!

Here is a summary of a few:
